Abstract:With the rise of water level, the construction of the Three-Gorges Dam may have significant impacts on plant carbon-water relation and ecosystem properties in this region. To understand how the plants in this region adapt to the changes in water environments, we measured gas exchange, water potential and δ 13 C of sapling and mature trees of three co-occurring coniferous and deciduous species: Pinus massoniana, Quercus variabilis and Q. aliena, all are dominant tree species in this region. The two deciduous broad-leaf trees (Q. variabilis and Q. aliena) exhibited higher photosynthetic (P-n) and stomatal conductance (G-s) than the evergreen conifer species (P. massoniana). The predawn water potential (ψ- pd ) of P. massoniana was lower than that of the two broad-leaf species. Intrinsic water use efficiency (WUE-i, P-n/G-s) of P. massoniana was higher than those of Q. variabilis and Q. aliena. However, the differences in carbon isotope ratio (δ 13 C) of leaves among species, which gives integrative information of WUE in growing season period, were not statistically significant. We also compared eco-physiological parameters between saplings and mature trees of these three species. The P-n and G-s values of the mature trees were significantly lower than those of the saplings. The mature trees showed lower ψ- pd value, but the difference between the mature trees and the saplings was not statistically significant. However, the WUE-i values of all mature trees were significantly higher than those of the saplings. The δ 13 C values of mature trees showed more positive than those of corresponding saplings, indicating also higher WUE in the mature trees. From these results, we concluded that 1) P. massoniana showed different water use strategies from two Quercus trees species, and 2) the mature trees of these three dominant tree species showed lower photosynthetic rate but higher WUE than those of their corresponding saplings.

Runoff generation characteristics on three time scales for typical stands in Jinyun Mountain,Chongqing City

Abstract:To provide a basis for urban afforestation of water conservation in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area,based on the observation data of rainfall and runoff process during 2002-2005,the authors studied the runoff generation characteristics of the four typical forests on three time scales in Jinyun Mountain,Chongqing City.The results show that,1) Rainfall process distributed evenly during 2002-2005.Relative change rate of annual rainfall was 4.46% and variation coefficient was(0.061 8.) Average monthly rainfall agreed with the normal distribution.2) Both precipitation and runoff periods were obviously divided into dry season and wet season.Dry season was from October to the next March and wet season was during April to September.Most runoff volume of four forests came from the wet season.Among them,surface runoff accounted for over 85% and underground flow over 75%.3) The peak values of surface runoff and underground runoff occurred in June.The relation between monthly rainfall and surface runoff or underground runoff was performed by the unary quadratic equation.The order of annual surface runoff was given as follows: bamboo forest >shrub forest >mixed forest >broadleaved forest.The annual underground runoff was broadleaved forest >mixed forest >bamboo forest >shrub forest.4) Under the same rainstorm events,the order of the surface runoff coefficient was broadleaved forest <mixed forest <shrub forest <bamboo forest,and the underground runoff coefficient was broadleaved forest >mixed forest >bamboo forest >shrub forest.The relation between rainstorms and surface runoff or underground runoff was performed well by linear relationship.5) Both mixed forest and broadleaved forest had the better effects on flood regulation on time scales of year,month and rainstorms.The function of bamboo forest was the worst on three time scales.

Abstract:Plantation cultivation plays an important role in improving terrestrial ecosystem functions and services. Understanding the water-use patterns of major afforestation species is vital for formulating ecological restoration strategies and predicting the response of plantation to climate change. However, the impacts and drivers of forest types on water-use patterns of key tree species are poorly understood. Here, the combined methods of dual stable isotope of δ D and δ 18 O and Bayesian mixed framework (MixSIAR) were employed to investigate the water-use patterns of Cunninghamia lanceolata (Chinese fir) in a monoculture, mixed forest with Cinnamomum camphora , and mixed forest with Alnus cremastogyne under different rainfall events in subtropical China. Furthermore, the relative contribution of different soil and plant factors to the water-use patterns of Chinese fir was quantified using a random forest model. Our results showed that Chinese fir in the mixed forests (with C. camphora or with A. cremastogyne ) utilized less water from shallow soil compared to that in a monoculture but significantly improved the proportion of water absorbed from deep soil with the increase of 55.57%–64.90% and 68.99%–108.83% following moderate and heavy rainfall events, respectively. The most important factors contributing to the differences in water-use patterns of Chinese fir among monoculture and mixed forests were tree attributes (i.e., leaf biomass, eco-physiological regulation, and fine root biomass). These findings reveal that Chinese fir in mixed forests could optimize water-use patterns by adjusting plant properties for interspecific niche complementarity, improving the utilization of deep soil water. Overall, this study suggests that mixed-species plantations could improve water-use efficiency and reduce the sensitivity of tree species to precipitation change, indicating they are better able to cope with expected climate variability.

Abstract:Identifying the spatio-temporal variation in water use by co-occurring species in mixed forests can determine whether there is hydrological niche partitioning or niche overlapping, i.e., whether plant co-occurrence brings about resource complementation or interspecific competition, and provides a reference for plantation management. Water stable isotopic compositions in precipitation, soil, and four plants (xylem and leaf) in ecological and economic forests and hydrometeorological factors were continuously monitored for a year, and the water uptake by plants was determined using a Bayesian MixSIR model. The isotopic compositions of soil water and plant water in the ecological forest ( Camphora camphora and Cunninghamia lanceolate ) and economic forest ( Castanea mollissima and Camellia pitardii ) showed similar seasonal variation, and no significant difference between their mean isotopic values was found (p > 0.05). The isotopic compositions in leaf water of different plants in the two forests were controlled by xylem water isotope and meteorological factors, rather than soil moisture conditions. With decreasing soil water availability, the water sources of C. camphora , C. lanceolate, and C. pitardii changed from shallow to deep, while the water use pattern of C. mollissima was insensitive to changing soil moisture conditions. The water source overlapping between C. camphora and C. lanceolate in the ecological forest might generate water resource competition during the dry period, limiting their ecological functions. On the other hand, the water source partitioning between C. mollissima and C. pitardii in the economic forest facilitated the water resource allocation. Our study suggested that the overlapping and partitioning of hydrological niches among species in mixed forests were species-specific and provided a scientific basis for fully exploiting the ecological and economic benefits of silviculture ecosystems.

A healthier water use strategy in primitive forests contributes to stronger water conservation capabilities compared with secondary forests

Abstract:Water conservation is an important ecological function of forest ecosystems, plant water use strategy is a key factor in regulating forest ecosystem water balance. However, there are still insufficient studies on the water conservation capacity and water use strategies of different forest types, especially in climate-sensitive areas. In this study, we determined the stable isotope values (δD, δ18O and d-excess) of plant water, soil water and precipitation from two typical stand types (primary forest and secondary forest) on Changbai Mountain to reveal plant water use and evaluated the water conservation capacity. The results indicated that rainwater infiltrated into the soil combined with piston flow and preferential flow in the primary forest, and preferential flow was the only form of flow in the secondary forest. The main tree species in the primary forest formed a relatively stable water use niche. Among them, the water use pattern of Quercus mongolica Fisch. ex Ledeb (Qm.) was transformed between shallow and deep soil layers with strong ecological plasticity. The dominant species in secondary forest derived water from similar soil layers with intense interspecific competition. By comparing the water use patterns, the secondary forest conformed to the hypothesis of “two water worlds”, while the primary forest conformed to the hypothesis of one reservoir. The primary forest ecosystem had stronger water conservation capacity than secondary forest ecosystem due to the regulable water use strategies of plants and the stable water conservation capacity of the soil. These results will provide theoretical support and a reference for plan future forest management strategies in the climate-sensitive areas.

Abstract:The floristic,structure and distribution of main vegetation types in Changtan reservoir drainage area in Huangyan,Zhejiang Province were investigated.The results showed that: the main vegetation types of Changtan reservoir drainage area were coniferous forest,coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest,evergreen broad-leaved forest,evergreen and deciduous broad-leaved mixed forest,bamboo forest,shrub community,and economic plantation.All of them were artificial or secondary vegetation,and that coniferous forest and coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest formed the principal part.The vegetation have low species diversity and single space configuration,thinner litter layer,thus were not significant in preserving water and soil.Evergreen broad-leaved forest was the aim of vegetation restoration of Changtan reservoir drainage area.The ecological recovery strategy was suggested in order to promote its succession rate.

Spatial-temporal Differentiations in Water Use of Coexisting Trees from a Subtropical Evergreen Broadleaved Forest in Southwest China

Abstract:Southern China houses the largest subtropical broadleaf forest in the world, with abundant rainfall brought by the Pacific and Indian monsoons. As the intensity and frequency of drought are increasing, understanding the water use patterns of co-occurring trees is a key issue for predicting the response of these subtropical forests. The water uptake depths and water use-related leaf traits of three dominant canopy tree species at different ages (DBH) were investigated in a subtropical forest (2018-2019). We found that the delta H-2 and delta O-18 of various water pools, such as fog, soil, stream, lake, and groundwater, plotted almost entirely on the local meteoric water lines (2018: y = 8.2x +11.5; 2019: y = 8.1x +10.4). This result suggested that water bodies within the forest experienced minor evaporation. An interspecific partitioning of water acquisition was detected among tree species of similar ages in 2018 (a regular year), but they tapped soil water from similar depths after experiencing drought event in 2019. Most large (DBH > 50 cm) and middle-sized (15 cm < DBH < 30 cm) trees switched their major water sources from shallow (2018) to deep (2019) soil layers, whereas the seedlings (DBH < 2 cm) relied on shallow soil water during the study periods. The water use patterns of different trees were related to the leaf-level intrinsic water use efficiency (WUEi) and specific leaf area (SLA). The spatial-temporal differentiation of water use in regular years can facilitate plant co-existence among the canopy trees, but the interspecific competition for similar water sources in drought years may increase the risk of tree dieback in the subtropical forests. These fingdings provide a mechanistic explanation for the high diversity of subtropical forests in China from the perspective of differentiation in plant water use.
Eco-economic Analysis of Pear Tree——Upland Rice System on Sloping Land in Three Gorges Reservoir Area of China

Abstract:Ecological economic principles were applied to study the economic and ecological effects of the newly introduced and built pear tree-upland rice system on sloping land in Three Gorges reservoir area in this paper.Compared with the pear mono-cropping system,the experiment result from the newly designed pear tree-upland rice system indicated that:(1)This system improved soil fertility,reduced soil and water losses and decreased the soil erosion.(2) Weed and pest can be significantly controlled in the system so that the application of herbicide and pesticide can be reduced,resulting in 60.19 kg N /hm2 and 8.0 kg P/hm2 of non-point source pollution load decrease.(3)It could notably utilize local natural resources with the land utilization efficiency increasing by 44%and the energy economic index enhancing by 2%.The results showed that pear tree-upland rice system is a high-efficient intercropping system with good ecological and economic benefits for farmers and has a prosperity in Three Gorges reservoir area of China.
Soil Water Use Strategies of Dominant Tree Species Based on Stable Isotopes in Subtropical Regions, Central China

Abstract:Water is a crucial factor affecting plant growth and ecosystem processes. In the subtropical region, global climate change leads to frequent seasonal droughts. How plant water strategies and the adaptability of forest ecosystems change is an urgent issue to be discussed. In this study, four sample plots (P. massoniana for Plot 1, C. lanceolata for Plot 2, Q. acutissima for Plot 3, C. funebris and I. corallina for Plot 4) were selected in the Taizishan Mountain area of Hubei, China, including three forest types (coniferous forest, broad-leaved forest and coniferous broad-leaved mixed forest) and five dominant tree species. The δD and δ18O isotope compositions in plant and soil water were analysed, and the water use strategies of dominant species were predicted by using the MixSIAR model. The water absorption depth and proportion of the five species were significantly different in different seasons. In plot 4, I. corallina and C. funebris derived (58.8 ± 14.0% and 55.7 ± 23.4%, respectively) water from 10–40 cm soil in wet season, but C. funebris shifted to derive water from deep soil in dry season. This result indicates that the mixing of C. funebris and I. corallina can effectively prevent water competition in dry season with water deficit. From wet season to dry season, the depth of water utilisation of the P. massoniana, C. lanceolata, Q. acutissima and C. funebris with deep roots converted from shallow to deep soil, suggesting that the four species had significant dimorphic root systems and strong ecological plasticity.

Abstract:Water is a key and limiting factor for ecosystem processes (carbon dioxide fixation, vegetation growth, respiration, etc.) and functions (NPP, Net Primary Productivity) in arid and semi-arid areas. As the main regulator, knowledge of plant water use patterns is essential in understanding the SPAC (Soil-Plant-Atmosphere-Continuum) cycle. The tree-planting project in the southern and northern mountains of Lanzhou city aims to improve the ecological environment and promote urban construction. In this study, we analyzed the water use strategies of the dominant plants C. korshinskii and R. soongorica in natural shrubs of southern and northern mountains of Lanzhou city using oxygen stable isotope techniques. The result showed that the flexible water uptake pattern of C. korshinskii and its faster response to precipitation pulse, compared with R. soongorica, might help it to make full use of water and nutrients and adapt to the dry environment. However, R. soongorica progressively switched to suck up deeper soil water and increased the water use proportion from 0.5% to 84.4% as the seasons changed, indicating a greater degree of ecological plasticity. The flexible water use strategies of C. korshinskii and R. soongorica in the same habitat reduced competition for water and nutrients and enhanced adaptability to arid environments. The work presented here provides insights into vegetation restoration and ecological management for the southern and northern mountains of Lanzhou city.

Abstract:Plant water uptake plays a crucial role in regulating the water balance for the stability of ecosystems. Previous studies on plant water uptake, focused on arid and semi-arid regions due to water scarcity in these areas, leaving gaps in understanding the strategies and factors affecting plant water uptake in temperate semi-humid regions, where there is a high sensitivity to climate change To assess water uptake patterns through stable isotopes (δD and δ 18 O), we chose Pinus koraiensis , a dominant species in the broadleaf Korean pine forest, poplar–birch forest and spruce–fir forest of the Changbai Mountain. Our findings indicated that soil water served as the direct water source for Pinus koraiensis , while precipitation, river water, and groundwater indirectly contributed via replenishing soil moisture and subsequently supporting plant water uptake. Within the broadleaf Korean pine forest and poplar–birch forest, Pinus koraiensis primarily extracted soil water from depths of 0–10 cm, accounting for approximately 49.6 % and 54.5 % of its total water uptake, respectively. In contrast, within the spruce–fir forest, Pinus koraiensis primarily extracted soil water from depths 40–50 cm, representing approximately 31.9 % of its total water uptake. In addition, through the partial correlations and variation partitioning analyses, the results revealed that sand content was the driver of the plant water uptake pattern, which affected the fine root distribution by determining the field capacity and bulk density to drive the plant water uptake. Future forest conservation management endeavours will primarily concentrate on protecting soil integrity, reducing soil erosion, maintaining regional water balance, and preserving plant diversity in the Changbai Mountain region.

Analysis on water use strategies of natural poplar in Hunshandake Sandy Land, China

Abstract:<p>The past decades have witnessed the increasingly severe desertification and high sandstorm frequency in Hunshandake desert, China, which evokes extensive concern regarding the ecological and environmental effects on natural plant fields. Herein, natural poplars in this area are studied in this work to analyze the water use efficiency (WUE), water absorption source (WAS), water consumption of poplar and water use strategy (WUS). The results show that the intrinsically high WUE of poplar can be enhanced under water stress status. The 0‐100 cm soil water or underground water constitutes the main WAS. Poplar uses deep soil water or underground water when there is insufficient precipitation in rainy season, which, however, turns to use easily‐absorbed precipitation water after rainfall and lives through the growing period by switching water absorption positions. The unique dimorphic root system, adjustable WUE and adjustable WUS make poplar able to maximally use limited water resource, which is also the main strategy for its survival in arid and semi‐arid areas. The combined analyses help us to get insight into the survivability and adaptive ability of plants as well as to regulate the limited water resource. Abstract:We investigated the seasonal water use patterns of five canopy tree species, Schima superba, Liquidambar formosana Hance, Quercus griffithii Hook, Quercus acutissima Carruth, Pinus massoniana in a subtropical secondary forest in Guangxi province, which were pervasively planted in South China. The hypothesis is that the trees can make different temporal use of environmental resources which change seasonally, and consequently contribute to their coexistence. Sap flow technique was used to measure the daily and seasonal transpiration during the period from June 2016 to May 2017. The sap flow ‐ derived daily transpiration (EL), leaf water potential (ΔΨ), hydraulic conductance (K), as well as the responses of EL to driving factor – water vapor pressure deficit (VPD) were determined in dry and wet seasons. Measured data of stem sap flow showed that L. formosana, Q. griffithii, and P. massoniana transpired more water than S. superba and Q. acutissima during the whole monitoring period, while daily EL of P. massoniana rapidly decreased under dry season. We attributed the different water use patterns to the significant difference in ΔΨ, K, and wood density among the five species. Moreover, linear relationships between the daily transpiration and VPD might suggest diverse water use strategies. For the species of S. superba, Q. acutissima, and P. massoniana, less water consumption and relatively flat change of transpiration with VPD were observed, suggesting a relatively tighter stomatal control. The slope values for L. formosana and Q. griffithii, which were much higher even under dry season, might own a weak stomatal control. These different functional and hydraulic traits, together with the associated water use strategies, might facilitate the coexistence of these five canopy tree species, which would assist in predicting the impact of future environmental changes on plant biodiversity and ecosystem services in the investigated region.

Abstract:Determination of water sources of plant species in a community is critical for understanding the hydrological processes and their importance in ecosystem functions. Such partitioning of plant xylem water into specific sources (i.e. precipitation, groundwater) can be achieved by analysing deuterium isotopic composition (δD) values for source waters. A subalpine dark coniferous forest in southwestern China was selected to examine water use strategies of three key species. Our objectives are to: (1) determine contributions of rainfall and groundwater to soil and xylem water and (2) examine effects of rain, days after rain, soil depth, and species on such contributions. We found that the three species tend to have different, but complementary water use patterns. The dominant canopy tree of Abies faxoniana relies primarily on groundwater (i.e. 66–96% of its water sources) and does not change its dependency on groundwater between seasons. In contrast, the midstory Betula utilis and the understory Bashania fangiana depend predominantly on rainwater (i.e. 13–94% and 32–93%, respectively), and tend to use water opportunistically, switching to groundwater as the main source under stressful conditions during the dry season. The complementary and, for some species, shifting water use strategies and the lack of dependency on rainwater by the foundation species of the subalpine coniferous forest ecosystem should act together to promote species co‐existence and maintain community resiliency under potentially increasing water stress caused by climate change. Trade-Offs and Synergies between Plant Species Diversity and Water Retention Capacity of Pinus massoniana Plantation Community in Danjiangkou Reservoir Area

Abstract:In order to quantify the plant species diversity characteristics of Pinus massoniana plantations with different stand densities in the Danjiangkou reservoir area of Hubei Province and the relationship of their trade-offs and synergies with the water retention capacity in the reservoir area to give full play to the forest ecosystem services in the reservoir area and improve the level of sustainable management of plantations, we used the typical plot method, selected 35-year-old Pinus massoniana with low density (925–1000 plants·ha), medium density (1425–1625 plants·ha), and high density (2375–2525 plants·ha), and its community structure, species composition, and understory plant species diversity were studied, respectively, and the relationship of the trade-offs and synergies between the two services of water retention capacity and plant species diversity in Pinus massoniana plantations were calculated. We found that: (1) According to the survey statistics, there were 69 species of plants in the shrub and herb layers under forest including 32 species of shrubs and 37 species of herbs, belonging to 33 families and 62 genera. (2) The species richness of the shrub layer increased with the increase in the stand density, which was opposite in the herb layer. The Shannon–Wiener diversity index and Simpson dominance index of the shrub layer showed the regularity of high density > low density > medium density, while the herb layer decreased gradually with the increase in density. The Pielou evenness index of the shrub layer and herb layer was the highest in the high-density and medium-density stands, respectively. (3) Trunk flow, soil layer water storage and plant species diversity under medium and high density conditions, litter layer water storage and plant species diversity under low-medium density conditions showed synergistic relationships in the shrub layer and herb layer, everything else were trade-off relationships. As far as the Danjiangkou reservoir area is concerned, the low-density Pinus massoniana plantations have higher understory plant species diversity and more stable community structure, and there is a trade-off relationship between the water retention capacity and understory plant species diversity.

Water-Use Strategies and Habitat Adaptation of Four Tree Species in Karstic Climax Forest in Maolan

Abstract:The technique of stable hydrogen and oxygen isotope tracing has become an important means to study the mechanism of water movement due to its high sensitivity and traceability. In this study, four dominant tree species in the karst forest of Maolan, Guizhou Province, were selected, and their water-use strategies and the mechanism of maintenance of tree species diversity were investigated using the stable hydrogen and oxygen isotope tracing technique. The results show that: (1) The regional precipitation varied evidently with the alternation of seasons, i.e., the values of δD and δ18O in precipitation had a positive bias in spring and a negative bias in summer and autumn. The value of deuterium excess (d-excess) was between 11.67‰ and 31.02‰, with a mean value of 22.98‰. (2) The soil temperature (ST), soil water content (SWC) and precipitation, which have a significant positive correlation, imposed a joint impact on the dynamics of the soil evaporative fractionation. (3) The line-conditioned excess (LC-excess) varied seasonally in different water bodies, i.e., the relative evaporative fractionation of the rhizosphere soil of deciduous tree species was stronger than that of evergreen tree species, and the evaporative fractionation of hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in the leaf water of evergreen tree species was stronger than that of deciduous tree species in spring and summer. However, that of the latter was stronger than that of the former in autumn. (4) The soil water was the most important potential water source for dominant tree species in karst terrain (71%), followed by epikarstic water, which made up an effective supplement (29%). (5) Finally, trees of different life forms and species varied in capacity and proportion in terms of using the potential water sources in different seasons, i.e., deciduous tree species had a greater capacity for using water from potential sources and variable water-use strategies. This may be a major water-limiting mechanism that maintains photosynthesis in the leaves of evergreen tree species (leaves are evergreen and plants continue to grow via photosynthesis) and constrains photosynthesis in deciduous tree species (leaves fall and plants become dormant and stop growing). These results lead to the conclusion that the dominant tree species in karstic forests resist water stress and adjust water-use strategies towards each potential water source to adapt to the harsh karstic habitat through root plasticity and leaf defoliation.

[Water use characteristics of artificial sand-fixing vegetation on the southern edge of Hunshandake Sandy Land, Inner Mongolia, China]

Abstract:We examined the characteristics of water use in typical tree species of arbor and shrub in Hunshandake Sandy Land, Populus cathayana and Salix gordejevii, in the different seasons, with the aim to provide theoretical basis for the structural optimization of the artificial shelterbelt. Samples of precipitation, soil water, groundwater and stem water of the two vegetation were collected, and their distribution characteristics of δD-δ18O were analyzed by hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope technology. The contribution rate of these potential water source to the arbor and shrub species were calculated using multi-source linear mixing model. The precipitation equation line in the study area was δD=7.84δ18O+9.12, while soil moisture lines in the dry and wet season were δD=3.56δ18O-41.28 and δD=4.30δ18O-42.02, respectively. The δD-δ18O of soil water and stem water in the two seasons were lower than the precipitation δD-δ18O, indicating that both of them were strongly affected by the evaporation. Soil water contents in the shallow layer were strongly affected by rainfall and evaporation, with substantial fluctuation. With the increases of soil depth, soil water content tended to be stable, and the hydrogen and oxygen isotope in each soil layer showed significant differences. In the dry season, P. cathayana mainly utilized soil water in 0-40 cm and 120-200 cm layers, with contribution rates of 50.2% and 31.5%, respectively. S. gordejevii mainly absorbed soil water in 20-40 cm and 60-100 cm layers, and the contribution rates were 53.2% and 22.9%, respectively. In the wet season, the greatest contribution of soil water to P. cathayana was mainly in the 0-40 cm soil layer, accounting for 72.8%. S. gordejevii was mainly in the 0-20 cm soil water, evenly utilized the deeper soil water and groundwater. Due to the differences in root depth and distribution of the arbor and shrub, their water use strategies differed in different seasons, which was conducive to the stability of the shelterbelt community and tree species coexistence in Hunshandake Sandy Land. We proposed that the mixed planting species with different root depth should be considered in the future planting of artificial shelterbelt, which would help rationally utilize water resources and maintain the stability of sandy land ecosystem.
Forest Hydrological Effects of Litter Layers Under Different Natural Secondary Forest in Three Gorges Reservoir Area

Abstract:Litters' reserves,decomposition intensity,and water holding ability of four kinds of natural secondary forest in Simian Mountain,the upper area of Three Gorges Reservoir were studied.Results showed that the litters' reserve of broad-leaved forest was 107.09 t/hm2,which was the highest among the four kinds of forest litters,and it was followed by coniferous & broad-leaved mixed forest(70.18 t/hm2) and coniferous forest(66.65 t/hm2).The litters' reserve of Phyllostachys pubescens forest was the worst,which was only 35.37 t/hm2.The litters' max water holding capacity and water holding ability of coniferous & broad-leaved mixed forest were the best among the four kinds of forest litters(89.95 t/hm2,2.25);those of broad-leaved forest was second(67.33 t/hm2,1.89);those of coniferous forest was third(39.83 t/hm2,1.66);and those of Phyllostachys pubescens forest was the lowest(28.07 t/hm2,1.85).In terms of litters' water holding characteristic,forest hydrological effects of coniferous & broad-leaved mixed forest were the best among the four kinds of experimental natural secondary forest,and the effects of broad-leaved forest were better.The effects of coniferous forest and Phyllostachys pubescens forest were poor,which were not suitable to be popularized in the vegetation construction for soil and water conservation in the area.

Abstract:Forest trees use various water sources to adapt to environmental conditions in mountainous regions. However, water resources variances along elevational gradients are not clearly understood. This limits the assessment of the ecosystem responses to climate change. In this study, stable oxygen and hydrogen isotopes were used to investigate the spatiotemporal patterns of water sources for Faber's fir in a humid high-altitude elevational gradient (ranging between 2800 m.a.s.l. and 3700 m.a.s.l.) on the southeastern Tibetan Plateau. The results indicated that 27 ± 8.3 % of the xylem water was from previous winter snowmelt between May and June. In contrast, almost all xylem water was from current summer precipitation between July and October. Faber's fir at the lower elevation (2800 m.a.s.l.) primarily relied on water derived from winter precipitation during May and June. Yet, trees located near the tree line (3700 m.a.s.l.) were mostly dependent on current precipitation over the entire growing season. However, when statistically analyzing data from all seven different elevation gradients in this study, the contribution of winter precipitation to xylem water was not elevation dependent. Precipitation contributed to a large proportion (59.86 % ± 33.43 %) of xylem water between May and October. Meanwhile, no linear contribution ratio of precipitation to trees was identified in this high-altitude elevational gradient. The replenishment of soil water and the soil water storage determine the spatiotemporal patterns of water sources. Climate change has the possibility of reducing winter precipitation at high altitudes on the Tibetan Plateau. Thus, tree water use at different altitude gradients will play varied roles in influencing the evolution of forest composition under ongoing climate change.
