Abstract:As the dominant height of the stand at the baseline age, the site index is an important index to evaluate site quality. However, due to the variability of environmental factors, the growth process of the dominant height of the same tree species was variable in different regions which influenced the estimation results of the site index. In this study, a methodology that established site index modeling of larch plantations with site types as a random effect in northern China was proposed. Based on 394 sample plots, nine common base models were developed, and the best model (M8) was selected (R2 = 0.5773) as the base model. Moreover, elevation, aspect, and slope position were the main site factors influencing stand dominant height through the random forest method. Then, the three site factors and their combinations (site types) were selected as random effects and simulated by the nonlinear mixed-effects model based on the model M8. The R2 values had raised from 0.5773 to 0.8678, and the model with combinations (94 kinds) of three site factors had the best performance (R2 = 0.8678). Considering the model accuracy and practical application, the 94 combinations were divided into three groups of site types (3, 5, and 8) by hierarchical clustering. Furthermore, a mixed-effects model considering the random effects of these three groups was established. All the three groups of site types got a better fitting effect (groups 3 R2 = 0.8333, groups 5 R2 = 0.8616, groups 8 R2 = 0.8683), and a better predictive performance (groups 3 R2 = 0.8157, groups 5 R2 = 0.8464, groups 8 R2 = 0.8479 for 20 percent of plots randomly selected per group in the calibration procedure) using the leave-one-out cross-validation approach. Therefore, groups 5 of site types had better applicability and estimation of forest productivity at the regional level and management plan design.

Abstract:With 3090 analytic trees, the experiment was conducted to build the age-diameter at breast height ( A-D) curves of the main tree species in the nature spruce-fir coniferous and broad-leaved mixed stands, and forecast the age of trees ac-cording to the diameter of trees in the sample plot.Three kinds of guide curve of site index was formulated with 98 sample plots to simulate the relationship between the average age and average height of three dominant trees.Coefficient of deter-mination (R2), mean relative error (MRE) and root mean squared error (RMSE) were selected to analyze the validity of this equation.The optimal curve of ten species is a parabolic equation, exponential equation and power equation.The model accuracy of site index by distinguishing tree species to choose the dominant tree of spruce-fir is higher than that by choosing the dominant tree of sample plot without distinguishing tree species.The site index curve model of three-parame-ter equation is superior to that of two-parameter.There is significant difference of tree growth in the same site index.

Abstract:Based on the data of permanent plots in Mengjiangang Forest Farm, Jingshanjiao Forest Farm of Heilongjiang Province and of some circular branch-analysis plots in Songjianghe area of Jilin Province, the self-thinning model and basal area growth model were derived for larch plantation. The whole stand model system, set up in this research, was composed of 4 compatible models, i.e. the self-thinning model, prediction model of height-diameter curve, stand basal area growth model, Schumacher's stand yield model. Using the model system, quadratic mean diameter, mean height, the number of surviving trees per hectare, stand basal area, and stand volume can be evaluated for various levels of initial density and different sites.

Abstract:Site quality evaluation is an important foundation for decision-making and planning in forest management and provides scientific decision support and guidance for the sustainable development of forests and commercial plantations. Site index and site form models were constructed and subsequently compared utilizing fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) plantations in Nanping City, Fujian Province, China. This papers aim was to construct a site quality classification model, conduct further analysis on the effects of different site factors on the quality of the site, and achieve an assessment of site quality for Chinese fir plantations. An algebraic difference approach was used to establish a site index model and a site form model for Chinese fir in Fujian Province. The suitability of the two models was compared using model accuracy analysis and partial correlation, and the optimal model was chosen for classifying the site quality of the stands. On this basis, a site quality classification model was established using the random forest algorithm, and the importance of each site factor was determined through importance ranking in terms of their impact on site quality. Within the study area, the R2 of the site index model results was 0.581, and the R2 values of the five site form models based on different reference breast diameters, ranked from high to low, were 0.894, 0.886, 0.884, 0.880, and 0.865. The bias correlation coefficient between site form and stand volume was 0.71, and the bias correlation coefficient between site index and stand volume was 0.52. The results confirmed that the site form model is better suited for evaluating the site quality of Chinese fir plantations. The random forest-based site form classification model had a high classification accuracy with a generalization accuracy of 0.87. The factors that had the greatest impact on site form were altitude, canopy closure, and slope gradient, whereas landform had the smallest impact on site form. These results can provide a reference for the evaluation of the site quality of plantations and natural forests in southern China to ensure the long-term sustainable use of forest resources.

Abstract:Analyzing and understanding the structure and growth dynamics of semi-natural plantations is useful for their management. Since 1987, 16 plots with 4 treatments (CT: control; LT: light thinning; MT: medium thinning; and HT: heavy thinning) by 0, 20, 30 and 40% of basal area removal, respectively, and four replications were established in semi-natural larch-spruce-fir forests in northeast China. The structure and growth dynamics of semi-natural larch-spruce-fir stands and the effects of thinning on the growth, structure and diversity were examined. A mixed model repeated measures analysis of variance (RMANOVA) was used to test the effects of treatment and time.

Abstract:Objective]Site quality is essential for stand development. Stands established with natural or artificial regeneration methods requiring effective approaches to evaluate the site productivity in forestry practice. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the site quality for secondary forests and plantation using site index and site form models.[Method]The permanent and temporary inventory data,and the stem analysis data,were collected from pine-oak stands in Qinling Mountains. Feasibility of applying site index models for secondary forests was validated by cumulative frequency curve and SW normality tests. Reference age and DBH were determined by analyzing of mean height increment and current annual height increment. Methods for formulating site index and site form tables,such as ratio method,standard deviation adjustment,and coefficient variation adjustment were applied by species after fitting dominant height growth equations. Chi-Square test,falling point test and correlation test were used for accuracy analysis of site index and site form for secondary forest and plantation. MRES,AMRES,MRES% were applied for error analysis of site class,site index and site form. [Result]Chi-square values of each species were lower than critical values. Chi-square values of site index of Pinus tabulaedormis and Larix principis-rupprechtii were lower than that of site form. Chi-square value of site index of Quercus aliena var. acuteserrata was higher than that of site form. Little difference among site index and site form of Pinus armandii was observed. In general,site form appears superior for secondary forests,while site index is suitable for plantation. Site index and site form were more accurate than site class in evaluating the site quality. [Conclusion]Establishing site index tables and site form tables could be used for site evaluating in forest management. Further study of mixed and uneven-aged secondary forest site quality evaluation is required.

Abstract:Stem form is the shape of the trunk, differs among tree species and mainly affected by stand density factor. Accurate taper equations are crucial for estimating the stem diameter, form and tree volume, which is conducive to timber utilization and sustainable forest management and planning. Larch (Larix principis-rupprechtii Mayr.) is a valuable afforestation species under large-scale development in North China, but no study on the effect of density on its stem taper has been reported yet. The dataset included 396 analytical trees from 132 standard plots of larch plantation in Saihanba, Hebei Province. Based on 12 different forms of models, we explored the optimal basic equation for plantations and the effects of the stand density, basal area, canopy density and different forms of stand density on the prediction accuracy of the variable-exponent models. The variable-exponent taper equation that includes Sd (stand density) was constructed by using nonlinear regression, a nonlinear mixed effect model and the nonlinear quantile regression method. The results indicate that the Kozak’s 2004 variable-exponent taper equation was the best basic model for describing changes in the stem form of larch plantations, and the density factor in the form of Sd improved the prediction accuracy of the basic model. Among the three regression methods, the quantile regression method had the highest fitting accuracy, followed by the nonlinear mixed effect model. When the quantile was 0.5, the nonlinear quantile regression model exhibited the best performance which provides a scientific basis for the rational management of larch plantations.

Abstract:Plantation forests enhance carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems in China. Larix kaempferi (Lamb.) Carrière (Lamb.) (Larix olgensis Henry) is the main species for afforestation in the eastern Liaoning Province. Therefore, it is important to understand the correlation between the site class and carbon sink potential of Larix kaempferi plantations in Liaoning Province for afforestation and carbon sink in this area. The model was fitted using three classical theoretical growth equations: the Richards model, the Korf model, and the Hossfeld model. This study used the forest resource inventory data for management in Liaoning Province in 2011 to build six dynamic height-age models for a Larix kaempferi plantation in Dandong City regardless of base-age. The optimal model derived by the generalized algebraic difference approach (GADA) method was compared with the model derived by the algebraic difference approach (ADA) method. The superiority of GADA was demonstrated by comparison. The Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm was used to fit the model. The statistical and biological characteristics were considered synthetically when comparing the models. The best model was screened out by statistical analysis and graphic analysis. The results show that the differential height-age model derived from Richards equation can well explain the growth process of Larix kaempferi in Dandong City, Liaoning Province under different conditions. The site index model based on Richards equation and derived by GADA was used to calculate the site class of a Larix kaempferi plantation in Dandong City. The net primary productivity (NPP) value from the past ten years was extracted from the MOD17A3HGF data set. Spearman correlation analysis and Kendall correlation analysis were used to show that there is a significant positive correlation between NPP value and site class of Larix kaempferi plantation in Dandong City. Among them, the highest growth occurred in 2016; NPP increased by about 3.914 gC/m2/year for every two increases in height-age grade; the lowest increase in NPP was in 2014; NPP increased by about 2.113 gC/m2/year for every two increases in height-age grade; and for every two increases in height-age grade in the recent ten years, the average NPP value increased by about 2.731 gC/m2/year.
Diameter Distribution of Larch Forests Baesd on Different Thinning Intensity in Changbai Mountain, Northeast China

Abstract:In this paper, four typical thinning intensity were choose to the larch forests. After thinning, significant differences in stand periodic increment between control and thinning plots appeared. ANOVA indicated significant difference in any stand characteristic among treatments prior to thinning. Information on the distribution of stand characteristics in specific tree-size classes at given is valuable to for managers. So the objective of this study was to develop and compare the two methods (i, e., Normal distribution and Weibull distribution) for estimating the diameter distribution of larch forests Baesd on Different thinning intensity in Changbai Mountain, Northeast China, the results showed that all the thinning intensity followed the Normal distribution, and the correlation coefficients were above 0.918, but only the middle thinning conforms to the Weibull distribution, the correlation coefficient is 0.929. From chi-test results, the diameter structure simulated in this paper is applied, and with small application error and high precision. This showed that the Normal distribution can be chosen the prediction function for the area with stand structure distribution in the future.
Carbon Cycle of Larch Plantation Based on CO2FIX Model

Abstract:Aims Plantations play important roles in modifying regional carbon budget and maintaining regional carbon balance.In this study, we assessed larch plantation (Larix gmelinii var.principis-rupprechtii) carbon dynamics in Weichang County from a perspective of the forest biomass-soil-wood-products chain.Our objectives were to elucidate the carbon sink capacity of larch plantation and the influences of biomass, soil and wood product pools on carbon balance.Methods CO2FIX model was used to evaluate the carbon storage and flow of larch plantation over a time span of 120 years.Input data for model were derived from practical investigations and published papers.We validated the simulated results and found that this model was suitable in the region and the simulated results were reliable.Important findings (1) Soil was the largest carbon pool for larch plantation and the wood product pool had the smallest carbon storage.Meanwhile, carbon storage in wood products gradually increased with time.(2) In a rotation of 50 years from secondary poplar-birch forest to larch plantation, 250 t C•hm -2 was sequestrated by the larch plantation.70% of the carbon was transferred into soil in the form of litter and logging slash and the other 30% was transferred into wood products.(3) Larch plantation was a carbon sink during most of its growing period and turned to temporary carbon source when it was harvested.Larch plantation could sequestrate about 0.3 t C•hm -2 •a -1 in the long term.Our results indicated the importance of wood product carbon pool in carbon dynamics of plantation, which facilitated our understanding in the carbon dynamics and capacity of plantation.
Site Index Model for Southern Subtropical Masson Pine Forests Using Stand Dominant Height

Abstract:Stand dominant height has a close relationship with stand productivity and is not much affected by stand density and thinning within a reasonable density range, making it an excellent indicator for estimating stand site quality. Topographic factors (altitude, aspect, slope, etc.) have a significant influence on the growth process of stand level, and the combination of different site factors increases the randomness of the evaluation of forest productivity. In this paper, with one-way ANOVA, it was determined that the effects of density and management mode on the Masson pine stand dominant height were not significant. The data on the Masson pine stand dominant height in the southern subtropics in Guangxi, China, were analyzed, and the GADA model was established using the nonlinear least squares method, the Bayesian approach, and the one-level nonlinear mixed-effects model with the topographic factor as the random effect, respectively. The results indicated that the nonlinear mixed-effects model had the best fitting performance and the highest prediction accuracy for stand site quality (a 0.27% improvement in R2 compared to the least squares method and a 1.30% improvement in R2 compared to the Bayesian approach), while the model obtained by the Bayesian approach had more elasticity and biological significance. In summary, when the data distribution is uniform and comprehensive, introducing terrain factors into the establishment of site index models can provide a more scientific basis for estimating the productivity of southern subtropical Masson pine stands under different site conditions. When the data distribution is uneven, applying the Bayesian approach can make the site index model more biologically meaningful. The stand site quality model can predict the potential production capacity of forests, which is an important basis and can support forest management and harvest prediction. The results of this study provide a theoretical and practical basis for the establishment of a reasonable site index model for the Masson pine stand.

Abstract:Different angle gauge constants are chosen in the Chinese-fir plantation to carry out the investigation of volume and the comparative analysis is conducted according to the actual investigation result of the standard plots.The analysis is done on the relative errors of the volume investigation which are caused by choosing different angle gauge constants to identify the best angle gauge constants of Chinese-fir plantation's volume test,and the regression equation is used to rectify the errors and improve the accuracy.

Abstract:In Daqingshan experimental base, 34 site-types are divided by the following criterions: landform, the depth of soil and the growth of trees. The quality of sites is divided into 5 classes by the content of moisture and nutrition of soils in 200 investigated plots and the site quality index (at standard age of 20 years) for Pinus massoniana or Cunninghamia lanceolata. The method used for evaluation was based on the biologicol characters of trees and site quality which is very practical for choice of appropriate tree species in a given site, especially for intensive man-made plantation.
Spatio-temporal Variation of Distribution Patterns in Cunninghamia Lanceolata Plantations

Abstract:To aid in management of Cunninghamia lanceolata,the main timber species in Southern China,its variation of spatial distribution pattern was analyzed.Three permanent plots of C.lanceolata plantations with approximately the same site conditions,set by China continuous forest inventory in Shunchang,Fujian,were selected. C.lanceolata growth was divided into two stages: young trees(5 cm≤diameter at breast height (DBH)<10 cm) and mature trees(DBH≥10 cm). The DBH and coordinates of every tree(DBH≥5 cm) in the permanent plots were recorded in 2003 and 2008.The function L(r),improvement of Ripley’s K(r),the paircorrelation function g(r),and the uniform angle index(W_i) were used to analyze the spatio-temporal variation of spatial distribution patterns.The three permanent plots had mean uniform angle index(W) between 0.494-0.578 at low altitudes,0.465-0.477 at medium altitudes,and 0.426-0.601 at high altitudes.Results showed that altitude did not affect the spatial distribution pattern. The L(r ) and g(r) function curves of mature trees were generally lower than young trees’,i.e.tend to be more random or uniform distribution.So regardless of the initial distribution of young or mature trees,with the passage of time,there was a tendency for the aggregated distribution to change to a random distribution,and a random distribution to change to a uniform distribution.

Abstract:Competition among free branches in the tree canopy is an important factor influencing branch length growth. Therefore, there is a need to quantify this competition and to understand the impact of the regression technique on the predictive accuracy of the growth of free branch length (GFBL) model in a Larix principis-rupprechtii plantation. This study focused on an L. principis-rupprechtii plantation in Saihanba Mechanized Forest Farm. Five competition indices based on 2176-branch data points from 76 trees were used to quantify the branch competition, and three regression techniques (nonlinear least squares (NLS), nonlinear mixed-effects model (NLME), and nonlinear quantile regression (NQR)) were used to construct the GFBL model including the branch competition index. The results showed that the Chapman–Richards growth function, including the diameter at breast height (DBH) and depth of branch into crown (DINC), was the optimal equation for describing the GFBL in the studied L. principis-rupprechtii plantation. The branch competition index (CI) was found to be optimal for quantifying the branch competition when used with the maximum value parameter (a0) of the Chapman–Richards growth function. The three parameter estimation methods were compared, and the NLME, which included the CI, was found to have the highest predictive accuracy. The results of this study can act as a reference for improving the management, assessing the management effectiveness, and enhancing the quality of L. principis-rupprechtii plantations.

The Relationships among Structure Variables of Larch Forests in China

Abstract:Background Larch ( Larix Mill.) forests are widely distributed in the upper parts of mountainous areas in China, playing vital roles in constructing mountain landscapes and maintaining mountain environments. Despite their importance, our knowledges on the large-scale patterns of structure characteristics and the relationships between different structure variables are unclear. In this paper, we investigated 155 plots from 11 natural larch forest types across the country to explore the biogeographic patterns of the structure characteristics and the allometric relationships between different structure variables for Chinese larch forests. Results The structure characteristics were significantly different among larch forest types. For different larch forest types, the power function fits the relationships between tree height and diameter at breast height (DBH), average DBH and stem density, and taper and stem density well, but with different exponents among larch forest types. The power exponents of the allometric relationships between tree height and DBH for different larch forest types varied from 0.61 to 0.93 (mean = 0.86) by standard major axis regression (SMA), and from 0.51 to 0.78 (mean = 0.56) by ordinary least square regression (OLS). The 50%, 75% and 95% quantile regression (QR) and OLS indicated that the average DBH and taper of the L. gmelinii forests, L. gmelinii var. principis-rupprechtii forests, and L. sibirica forests were significantly correlated with stem density. Conclusions The relationship between tree height and DBH showed a power function relationship for all larch forest types in China, but with different exponents. Overall, stem density was negatively correlated with average DBH and taper. The Sect. Larix forests exhibited stand density effect. Our findings provide an important basis for recognizing the biogeographic patterns of structure factors and for the management of larch forests in China.
Seasonal dynamics of leaf area index of main forest types in the south hilly regions of Jiangsu Province

Abstract:The seasonal dynamics of leaf area index(LAI) of main forest types in hilly areas of south Jiangsu Province were studied by using a LAI-2000 plant canopy analyzer.The results showed that the LAI of four main forest types in this areas significantly varied with the seasons.The LAI of four forest types was in the order of Phyllostachys pubescens(3.45)>Cunninghamia lanceolata(2.87)>Quercus acutissima(2.62)>Pinus massoniana(2.00).The lowest gap fraction in canopy of C.lanceolata,P.pubescens,Q.acutissima,and Pi.massoniana was 6.7%,2.8%,5.6%,and 15.1% respectively and occurred in August.Their seasonal dynamics were exactly opposite with that of the LAI.Moreover,the leaf angles were not significantly fluctuated with seasonal changes.In all four forest types the canopy uniformity of C.lanceolata was the best while it was the worst for Q.acutissima.The regression analysis indicated that The LAI of the four types was exponentially correlated with the gap fraction in canopy(R2>0.95),and the general formula was y=ae-bx.

Four typical models were adopted in the study: (S=b+alnA,) S=aln(bA+1), S=aA~b, S=aA/(1+bA) . With the aid of SAS8.1 and MATLAB6.5 system, the first three models were fallen into disuse according to the F value of fitting curves. The model S=aA/(1+bA) was regarded as the standard curve to get second derivative species-area for the communities of Lespedeza davurica (Laxm.) Schindl, Cleistogenes songorica (Roshev) Ohwi, Agropyron cristatum (L.) Gaertn,and Bothriochioa ischaemum (L.) Keng, that is, 3.4 m~2, 4.1 m~2, 1.4 m~2 and 4.8 m~2. Since this model fitted all the communities well, it was considered as the best species-area model for the herbage plant communities on Loess plateau.

Abstract:To provide a referencing foundation for structural adjustments in a mixed larch（Larix olgensis）-spruce（Picea jezoensis）-fir（Abies nephrolepis） stand，found only in the over-logged forest of the Changbai Mountains，three parameters，namely uniform angle index，mingling index，and neighborhood comparison，were used to describe spatial structure. Results indicated that the stand uniform angle index was 0.520；the average stand mingling was 0.64；and for diameter at breast height with the neighborhood comparison，coniferous trees （esp. Picea jezoensis） dominated，with fewer Pinus koraiensis. The neighborhood pattern showed tree distribution was clustered，and the average mingling index indicated the stand was a medium mixed degree. Thus，these three spatial tests could be used to decide the trees and species to cut so as to adjust stands to an optimum structure.［Ch，3 tab. 17 ref.］

Abstract:Tree diameter distribution models are important tools for forest management decision making. Soil variables affect tree growth and thus diameter distribution. However, few studies have been conducted on diameter distribution models describing the effects of soil. This study developed a soil-sensitive diameter distribution model based on 213 sample plots of Larix principis-rupprechtii plantations in northern China. The Weibull distribution model was modified by a compatible simultaneous system and the percentile method with the inclusion of soil variables. The most significant factors influencing the diameter distribution of L. principis-rupprechtii in terms of both scale and shape were stand characteristics and available K and alkali-hydrolysable N. The adjusted coefficient of determination for parameter γ significantly improved by 16.0%, while the root mean square error for parameter β decreased by 10.4%. The F test indicated a substantial difference between the models with and without soil variables. From the perspective of adjustable R2 values, the Akaike information criterion, root mean square error, relative error index, and absolute error index, the inclusion of stand and soil factors in the tree diameter distribution model enhanced its performance compared to the model that did not consider soil factors. The soil-sensitive diameter distribution model is proven to be effective and accurate.
