Analysis of the plasma total homocysteine level of 55 young patients suffering from cerebral infarction and its related factors

Abstract:Objective To analyze the total homocysteine(tHcy) level in fasting plasma of 55 young patients with cerebral infarction,and investigate the factors influencing tHcy level in these cases.Methods 55 young patients with cerebral infarction,316 gerontal patients with cerebral infarction and 40 healthy young controls were recruited,plasma level of tHcy was assayed by high-performance liquid chromatography.Prior medical history including essential hypertension,diabetes mellitus,cardiac disease,and hyperlipemia were obtained from all patients.SPSS 11.0 was used to analyze the data.Results Geometric mean of tHcy was 17.35 μmol/ L in the young cerebral infarction group,17.60 μmol/ L in the gerontal cerebral infarction group and 11.88 μmol/ L in the young healthy controls,there was a significant difference between the means of the three groups(P0.01),the tHcy level of young patients with cerebral infarction was significantly higher than that of healthy controls,but without significant difference with gerontal group(P0.05).Of the young patients,there was a significant difference in the levels of tHcy between males and females(P0.01).Stepwise regression analysis showed that the tHcy level of young patients with cerebral infarction correlated with folic acid levels(P0.01) and gender(P0.05).Conclusions Elevated Hcy level of young patients with cerebral infarction was significantly associated with the reduction of folic acid,and tHcy level in males was significantly higher than that in females.
