Abstract:In this paper, a simplified thermodynamics analysis of cyclic plastic deformation is performed in order to establish an energy transition relation for describing the elastic–plastic stress and strain behavior of the notch-tip material element in bodies subjected to multiaxial cyclic loads. Based on the thermodynamics analysis, it is deduced that in the case of elastic–plastic deformation, Neuber’s rule inevitably overestimates the actual stress and strain at the notch tip, while the equivalent strain energy density (ESED) method tends to underestimate the actual notch-tip stress and strain. According to the actual energy conversion occurring in the notch-tip material element during cyclic plastic deformation, a unified expression for estimating the elastic–plastic notch stress–strain responses in bodies subjected to multiaxial cyclic loads is developed, of which Neuber’s rule and the ESED method become two particular cases, i.e. upper and lower bound limits of the notch stress and strain estimations. This expression is verified experimentally under both proportional and non-proportional multiaxial cyclic loads and a good agreement between the calculated and the measured notch strains has been achieved. It is also shown that in the case of multiaxial cyclic loading, the unified expression distinctly improves the accuracy of the notch-tip stress–strain estimations in comparison with Neuber’s rule and the ESED method. The unified expression of the notch stress–strain calculation developed in this paper can thus provide a more logical approximate approach for estimating the elastic–plastic notch-tip stress and strain responses of components subjected to lengthy multiaxial cyclic loading histories for local strain approach-based fatigue-crack-initiation life prediction.

Abstract:The aircraft,engine and other key load bearing structures are often subjected to variable-amplitude fatigue loading in the course of their services.Direct measurement and analysis of the residual stress field near a crack tip caused by plastic deformation due to overload is of great value for a better understanding of fatigue crack growth behavior under variable-amplitude loading,and thus for the improvement and development of a fatigue life prediction model.Based on the microscale depth-sensing indentation(DSI) residual stress measurement technique,this paper studies the practical testing of the residual stress field near a fatigue crack tip,obtaines the distribution of residual stress field near it in fatigue crack propagation process for a middle-crack tensile specimen of an aluminum alloy under constant amplitude and single peak overload.Also,it analyzes the residual stress distribution near the crack tip using the elastic-plastic finite element method under the same fatigue loads.Mutual authentication indicates that the results obtained by the two different ways agree well with each other.

Abstract:In this paper the eigenproblem of elastic plates with V-notches is studied in terms of the complex potentials of elasticity. The variation of the eigenvalues as functions of notch angle is discussed. The phenomenon of bifurcation in the curves of higher-order eigenvalues is discovered and the concept of ‘critical angle’ is proposed. Furthermore, a singular stress element, according to the stress field around notch-tips, is developed to account for notch-tip singularity. Moreover, conventional regular displacement elements are used outside the singular stress element, and then the basic finite element equations can be established based on the sub-region mixed energy principle. In two numerical examples, the stress intensity factors KI and KII of the notched specimens with various opening angles are evaluated, satisfactory accuracy can be obtained with very coarse meshes.

Abstract:;Sn elastic-plastic finite element method (FEM) is used to analyse the stress and strain distributions ahead of notches with various depths and flank angles in four-point bending (4PB) specimens of a C-Mn steel. By accurately measuring the distances sigma(f) the cleavage initiation sites from the notch roots, the local cleavage fracture stress of is measured. By increasing the notch depth and notch flank angle from 2.25 to 8.25 mm and 10 to 90 degrees, respectively, the distributions of high stress and strain at the moment of fracture show considerable variations. However, the value of sigma(f) stays relatively constant. The critical fracture event is thus shown to be identical, i.e. the propagation of a ferrite grain-sized crack into the neighbouring matrix. It is concluded that sigma(f) is mainly determined by the length of the critical microcrack, while the notch geometry and its associated stress volume have little effect on the value of sigma(f). The cleavage site ahead of a notch is determined by the stress distributions and the positions of the weakest grains.

Abstract:This study introduces a novel theoretical framework for determining the notch stress intensity factors (NSIFs) in composite materials. The approach involves utilizing Irwin's complex stress functions for Mode I and Mode II loading conditions. By investigating displacement and singular stress components around V‐notch tips, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of NSIFs in composite materials. Three different composite materials were considered in the study to explore the relationship between stress and material properties. The stress singularity order, denoted as λ , is determined through eigenequations. Moreover, explicit solutions for displacement and singular stress fields are derived for a more thorough understanding of the behavior around notches in composite materials. To validate the proposed theoretical framework, a rigorous numerical study is conducted using FEM on finite‐size notches. The results obtained from the numerical simulations are compared with theoretical predictions to assess the accuracy and reliability of the developed approach.

Abstract:Weak form quadrature element analysis (QEA) of multi-material antiplane V-notches is conducted. Angular eigenfunctions are introduced into the inner subdomains where stress singularity exists, while the outer domain is divided into several quadrature elements according to geometric boundary conditions and material properties. Algebraic equations are established and coefficients are solved for after introducing the minimum potential energy principle. The influence of the first eight terms on improvement of far field stress and displacement estimations is demonstrated. As compared to the computational costs of other methods, much fewer degrees of freedom are needed in the present formulation to achieve the same accuracy of results, exhibiting the merits of QEA of fracture problems.

Abstract:For an anti-plane problem, the differential operator is self-adjoint and the corresponding eigenfunctions belong to the Hilbert space. The orthogonal property between eigenfunctions (or between the derivatives of eigenfunctions) of anti-plane problem is exploited. We developed for the first time two sets of radius-independent orthogonal integrals for extraction of stress intensity factors (SIFs), so any order SIF can be extracted based on a certain known solution of displacement (an analytic result or a numerical result). Many numerical examples based on the finite element method of lines (FEMOL) show that the present method is very powerful and efficient.

Abstract:In order to determine the stress singularity in tips of three-dimensional anisotropic multi-material wedges,a special one-dimensional finite element approach was proposed to determine the stress singularity at the interface wedge of the bonded dissimilar anisotropic materials in a generalized plane strain state.Based on the principle of minimum total potential energy,the problem of determinating the stress singularity is changed to a problem in a circumferential coordinate system through the coordinate transformation and variable separation technology.A three-node one-dimensional isoparametric quadrilateral element was used to mesh the degenerated linear region.The numerical results agree with the analytical solutions very well,which indicates that the proposed approach has high efficiency and accuracy.

Abstract:By using the weak form of the governing equations for sectorial bimaterial domains and assuming that the displacement field is proportional to the (λ+1)-th power of the distance from the singular stress point, a second order characteristic matrix equation on λ is derived by a one-dimensional finite element formulation that only discretizes the domain circumferentially. Numerical examples covering a variety of interfacial singularities are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the formulation. Accurate solutions are yielded by very few elements whereas convergence can be attained by either hor p-refinement. Abstract:<p>Notch features have shown significant effects on fatigue behavior of engineering components, which deserve more attentions during structural integrity design and assessment. This work firstly revisits the stress field intensity (SFI) approach as well as its recent advances. Then, an improved weight function is developed to account for the inhibition effect, and yields a modified SFI approach for notch fatigue analysis considering size effect. In addition, the relationship between fatigue failure region (FFR) radius and fatigue life was explored and quantified. Fatigue tests on Ni-based superalloy GH4169 notch specimens with different sizes were conducted at 650℃, and experimental data of En3B steels and Al 2024-T351 alloys were used for model validation and comparison. Results indicate that the modified SFI approach provides better predictions than the other two approaches.</p>

Abstract:For orthotropic materials, the solution of notch stress field and stress intensity factor (SIF) is not only related to crack opening angle, crack depth, notch length, geometric parameters, but also obviously influenced by material characteristics and constitutive relation. On the basis of isotropic notch stress field and SIF theoretical formula, a series of multi-parameter models of orthotropic materials were constructed and fitted. The effects of notch depth, crack length, the ratio of notch depth to plate width, opening angle and mechanical properties of composite materials on geometric correction coefficient Y I are systematically analyzed. On this basis, a semi-empirical formula of Y I is put forward by combining stress field analysis and multi-parameter fitting. The semi-empirical formula is further verified with finite element method, traditional formula and various composite materials. The numerical results show that the simple formula proposed in this paper has higher prediction accuracy. Finally, the proposed formula is extended to the solution of notch stress field and geometric correction coefficient for V-notch-cracked plate under bending load, tension-bending complex loads.

Analysis of bi-material interface cracks with complex weighting functions and non-standard quadrature

Abstract:A boundary element formulation is developed to determine the complex stress intensity factors associated with cracks on the interface between dissimilar materials. This represents an extension of the methodology developed previously by the authors for determination of free-edge generalized stress intensity factors on bi-material interfaces, which employs displacements and weighted tractions as primary variables. However, in the present work, the characteristic oscillating stress singularity is addressed through the introduction of complex weighting functions for both displacements and tractions, along with corresponding non-standard numerical quadrature formulas. As a result, this boundary-only approach provides extremely accurate mesh-independent solutions for a range of two-dimensional interface crack problems. A number of computational examples are considered to assess the performance of the method in comparison with analytical solutions and previous work on the subject. As a final application, the method is applied to study the scaling behavior of epoxy-metal butt joints.

Abstract:In order to investigate the brittle failure of key-hole-notched components, the stress distribution at notch tips is studied numerically and theoretically. A semi-analytical formula is developed for the maximum notch-tip-stress, incorporating crack-tip-blunting, stress-concentration and stress-equilibrium. Stress distributions in notched plates are simulated by the finite-element method, showing improved accuracy of the formula relative to established solutions. Application of the developed equation to components containing U-notches and blunt V-notches, is explored, demonstrating its broad applicability. When combined with stress-based failure criteria, the semi-analytical model can be employed to assess brittle failure in notched components with significance toward fracture in heterogeneous materials. Abstract:Based on the theory of fracture mechanics and finite element method, this paper presents a numerical calculation of typical experimental models, with emphasis on calculation of the stress intensity factor of I-type crack. A two-dimensional finite element analysis of a plate sample including an initial crack was carried out to study the propagation of a fatigue crack under multiaxial loadings. The effects of crack length and the multiaxial condition on the stress intensity factor were especially investigated. Our present approach provides an effective method for edge crack fracture criterion under complex loading calculation.

Abstract:The notch characteristics of engineering components significantly impact their fatigue lives. Accurately analyzing the notch effect and size effect is of great significance for structural integrity evaluation, which provides insights into the extent of fatigue failure in engineering structures. In this paper, a new method is proposed for determining the fatigue failure region based on actual elastic-plastic stress distribution under various notch geometries and applied loads. It considers the complex mechanical behavior of the plastic effect and stress relaxation near the notch root. Furthermore, a novel weight function is employed to consider the relative stress gradient at all points within the fatigue failure region. Finally, an enhanced stress field intensity approach is developed to predict notch specimens fatigue lives utilizing experimental lives of smooth specimens. Additionally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is analyzed by predicting the fatigue lives of three distinct materials notched specimens with varying geometries and applied loads. The prediction absolute errors of the proposed approach are compared with those of the other traditional notched fatigue analysis methods. The comparative results indicated that the performance of the proposed method outperforms the other methods.
