Abstract:Objective To explore the relationship between nutritional status and dietary protein intake in patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis (HD). Method Ninety eight HD patients were treated in clinical stable state in the HD Center of Peking University Third Hospital. Data on dietary record, subjective global assessment (SGA), biochemical measurement, and anthropometry were collected in this study. The nutritional status was assessed by SGA. Moreover, all patients were grouped by dietary protein intake (NDPI) normalized by ideal body weight to compare this difference in nutritional status among different groups. Univariate and multivariate analysis were used to identify factors affecting dietary protein intake. Results A total of ninety-eigth HD patients (male 58 and female 40) were included in this study. The prevalence of malnutrition assessed by SGA was 29%. The mean NDPI and the mean normalized dietary energy intake (NDEI) were 0.96±0.25 g/kg·d and 120.50±31.59 kJ/kg·d, respectively. There were no differences in nutritional parameters among different groups. Conclusions A majority of patients maintained good nutritional status although they consumed amount of NDPI lower than that recommended by K/DOQI. A further study of nitrogen balance is needed to explore the optimal amount of dietry protein intake in chronic hemodialysis patients.
