Abstract:Mathematic equations describing arc root movement on different geometries of contact surfaces for low-voltage circuit breakers are proposed in this paper. Coupling with a chain-type arc model and considering mechanical movement, magnetic field and electrical transient circuit, an arc interruption numerical model for low-voltage circuit breakers has been developed. Based on this model, the arc motion during interruption process for low-voltage circuit breakers was simulated. The paper also analyzes the arc motion characteristics in different configurations of arc runners.

Abstract:During the interruption, the separation of the contacts plays an important role in different kinds of switch gears since the arc motion or the arc elongation will be affected. The movement of the contact could increase the arc length and then decide the arc behavior. In reverse, the arc current will be changed during the interruption and the Lorentz force will then influence the movement of the contact. It is necessary to consider this phenomenon to make the arc simulation more accurate and universal. In this work, low voltage arc plasma simulation in 3D with contact opening process has been established. Both the sheath and nonlinear magnetic material were taken into consideration. Calculation was based on magneto-hydrodynamic arc model, and a method of coupling different software to separately calculate fluid and electromagnetic field has been developed to fulfill the requirements above. Furthermore, a low voltage circuit breaker has been tested to validate the simulation with U-I characteristics.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the numerical investigation of arc plasma behavior in low-voltage circuit breaker with arc-splitting process included. A 3-D simulation model of a certain type miniature circuit breaker product is built and calculated, which is based on magnetohydrodynamics theory. Aside from coupled electromagnetic and gas dynamic interactions being considered as usual, a thin layer of nonlinear electrical resistance elements is used to represent the voltage drop of plasma sheath and the formation of new arc roots. Thus, the arc-splitting process with ferromagnetic plates can be included. Arc motion is described in detail by the temperature distribution. Some interesting phenomena are observed in the simulation, such as the arc root jumping from contact to arc runner, the arc back commutation before splitting into series arcs by metallic plates, new arc root formation in splitting process, and, finally, the arc go across the splitter plates in the chamber. Moreover, the simulation result is compared with experimental result, which shows good agreement.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the numerical investigation of arc plasma behavior during arc commutation process in a medium-voltage direct current circuit breaker (DCCB) contact system. A three-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) model of air arc plasma in the contact system of a DCCB is developed, based on commercial software FLUENT. Coupled electromagnetic and gas dynamic interactions are considered as usual, and a thin layer of nonlinear electrical resistance elements is used to represent the voltage drop of plasma sheath and the formation of new arc root. The distributions of pressure, temperature, gas flow and current density of arc plasma in arc region are calculated. The simulation results indicate that the pressure distribution related to the contact system has a strong effect on the arc commutation process, arising from the change of electrical conductivity in the arc root region. In DCCB contact system, the pressure of arc root region will be concentrated and higher if the space above the moving contact is enclosed, which is not good for arc root commutation. However, when the region is opened, the pressure distribution would be lower and more evenly, which is favorable for the arc root commutation.

Abstract:The mathematical model of 3-dimentional air arc plasma under the effect of external magnetic field is set up based on magnetic hydro-dynamics(MHD).Considering the characteristics of anode and cathode,reasonable current density distributions are imposed and a method related to natural electrical conductivity of the arc plasma is used to determine the arc root position.By adopting the commercial computational fluid dynamics(CFD)package based on control-volume method,the above MHD model is solved and verified using images recorded by a high-speed camera.The characteristics of the motion of the arc plasma are described,and the propagation and reflection of pressure wave are considered as the reason of motion in arc chamber.In addition,double-vortices induced by cathode jetting and the 'tail' at the back of the arc plasma are described in detail.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the numerical investigation of low- voltage arc plasma behaviour with the contact opening process included. A flexible experimental setup with a rotating contact is designed to support this study. Based on the magnetohydrodynamic arc model, the elongation and the commutation behaviour of the arc plasma during the contact rotation progress are simulated. Under the given conditions of the external magnetic field and the contact rotating velocity, the arc motion is described in detail by the temperature distribution. The stagnation together with the following rapid jump of two arc roots is observed by both calculation and experiment. The rapid rise in the arc voltage is mainly caused by the increasing difference between the two arc roots displacement in the moving direction, and the jump instant of the arc root on the moving contact is according to the moment of the maximal voltage value.

Abstract:The mathematical model of 3-dimentional air arc plasma considering the ablation of lateral walls is set up based on magnetic hydro-dynamics(MHD).The mass concentration equation is introduced to the model on the basis of traditional mass,momentum and energy equations.The influence of wall ablation on the thermodynamic and transport properties is considered.The method of "view factors" is used to calculate the radiation reaching the lateral wall.By adopting the commercial computational fluid dynamics(CFD) package based on control-volume method,the above MHD model is solved and the distribution of temperature field,concentration field,flow field and electrical potential field in the arc chamber is calculated.The simulation results indicate that the vapor concentration behind the arc column is higher than that in front of the arc column because of the existence of "vortex" in the arc chamber.The use of gassing material causes arc voltage increase 19.2%,and causes the average arc velocity increase 20.1%.The experimental results prove the validity of the arc model.

Abstract:The movable contact of conventional air circuit breaker (ACB) includes multiple parallel contacts. The arc motion process directly affects the breaker capacity of ACB. Therefore, it is important to study the arc motion process of multiple parallel contacts model. A three-dimensional (3D) magneto-hydro-dynamic (MHD) model of air arc plasma is built to investigate the arc motion process. The anode of this model consists of two parallel contacts. The potential vector approach is adopted to calculate the electromagnetic field. The thin sheaths surrounding the electrodes are also employed to represent the voltage drop of electrodes. Based on this model, the evolutions of arc voltage, temperature, and current density are obtained. It is noted that the anode arc root form on two parallel contacts with the arc evolution, and the cathode root is the only one. The arc column is merged together due to their attraction.

Abstract:In this paper, to simulate the arc motion in an air circuit breaker (ACB), a three-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) model is developed, considering the influence of thermal radiation, the change of physical parameters of arc plasma and the nonlinear characteristic of ferromagnetic material. The distributions of pressure, temperature, gas flow and current density of arc plasma in the arc region are calculated. The simulation results show some phenomena which discourage arc interruption, such as back commutation and arc burning at the back of the splitter plate. To verify the simulation model, the arc motion is studied experimentally. The influences of the material and position of the innermost barrier plate are analyzed mainly. It proved that the model developed in this paper can efficiently simulate the arc motion. The results indicate that the insulation barrier plate close to the top of the splitter plate is conducive to the arc splitting, which leads to the significant increase of the arc voltage, so it is better for arc interruption. The research can provide methods and references to the optimization of ACB design.

Abstract:Air circuit breaker (ACB) is widely used in power distribution system. The movable contact of ACB consist of multiple parallel contacts and the arc will be ignited when the short-circuit current appears. This paper focuses on the arc motion process in multiple parallel contacts system. A 3-D magneto-hydro-dynamic (MHD) model of multiple parallel contacts system is built. In this model, the nonlinear B-H curve of splitter plate is used in calculation. The magnetic vector potential approach is adopted to calculate the time-varying electromagnetic field produced by the current loop. The difference of voltage drop between near-anode and near-cathode is considered. In addition, the interaction among multiple parallel contacts is included in numerical simulation. Based on this calculation, the arc voltage, temperature and current density were obtained. The arc motion process is analyzed by current density and temperature. The simulation results show that the anode arc root will appears on multiple contacts with the increase of current. The upper arc moves faster than low arc after the arc column is divided by the splitter plate.

Abstract:The severity of the contact surface ablation determines the breaking capacity of the vacuum circuit breaker, and the interaction between the arc root and the electrode is the main cause of the contact surface ablation. The characteristics of the arc root determine the magnitude of the electromagnetic force received by the arc during the movement stage as well as the shape and speed of the arc movement. It will eventually affect the temperature of the contact surface and the ablation situation. This paper studied the arc root characteristics of high-current constricted vacuum arcs between the iron-core cup-shaped transverse magnetic field contacts and put forward the idea of using the ratio of cathode and anode arc root areas to quantitatively analyze the concentration of vacuum arc. The research on the arc root characteristics of the vacuum arc can help to improve the arc characteristics and arcing mechanism, and the proposition of the ratio can provide a new method for the study of constricted arc. This can provide a basis for improving the arc extinction performance of the switch, reducing the ablation of the contact material, and improving the contact life.

Abstract:In this paper, a 3D magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) arc simulation model is applied to analyze the arc motion during current interruption in a certain air circuit breaker (ACB). The distributions of pressure, temperature, gas flow and current density of the arc plasma in the arc region are calculated, and the factors influencing the commutation process are analyzed according to the calculated results. Based on the airflow in the arc chamber, the causes of arc commutation asynchrony and the back commutation are investigated. It indicates that a reasonable contact space design is crucial to a successful arc commutation process. To verify the simulation results, the influence of contact space on arc voltage and arc commutation is tested. This research can provide methods and references to the optimization of ACB design.

Experimental Study on Arcing Process of Vacuum Arc under Wan-Type Contacts

Abstract:The arc characteristics which have a great impact on contact erosion play a decisive role on the interruption performance of vacuum circuit breakers. In this paper, a 3D model of wan-type contacts was built, the magnetic field distribution between the contacts and the electromagnetic force of the arc column were calculated. Then the experimental system was established. The characteristics of vacuum arc with different breaking currents from 4 kA (peak) to 13 kA (peak) were investigated. The arc appearance, variation of arc voltage and the duration of voltage noise were analyzed. Experimental results showed that as the peak current increased, the arc expanded more rapidly and had more constrictive appearance. The voltage noise occurred earlier and ended later as the peak current increased continuously. Meanwhile, the voltage noise was always accompanied by short-time constriction of arc or bright cores in the arc column. In addition, a special phenomenon with the arc root moving along the edge side of anode was observed when the peak current was more than 13 kA, leading to a melting speed of about 65 m/s, which was equivalent to the velocity of arc movement.

Abstract:A numerical simulation model for 252 kV puffer circuit breaker is constructed, by using a proven commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package, PHOENICS. The model takes into account the moving parts in the circuit breaker, turbulence enhanced momentum and energy transport, radiation transport. The arcing process in a SF(6) puffer circuit breaker with two hollow contacts is simulated under different conditions, and the simulation results are verified with experimental results. Through simulation, the pressure, temperature and velocity in the arc quenching chamber can be obtained. The simulation model is also capable of predicting the influence of design parameters variations on breaker performance, and can thus help to reduce the number of short-circuit tests during the design stage.
