Abstract: This paper discuss an intrinsic relation among congruent relations \cite{CLPZ}, cyclotomic expansion and Volume Conjecture for $SU(n)$ invariants. Motivated by the congruent relations for $SU(n)$ invariants obtained in our previous work \cite{CLPZ}, we study certain limits of the $SU(n)$ invariants at various roots of unit. First, we prove a new symmetry property for the $SU(n)$ invariants by using a symmetry of colored HOMFLYPT invariants. Then we propose some conjectural formulas including the cyclotomic expansion conjecture and volume conjecture for $SU(n)$ invariants (specialization of colored HOMFLYPT invariants). We also give the proofs of these conjectural formulas for the case of figure-eight knot.

Abstract:We define vertex-colourings for edge-partitioned digraphs, which unify the theory of P-partitions and proper vertex-colourings of graphs. We use our vertex-colourings to define generalized chromatic functions, which merge the chromatic symmetric and quasisymmetric functions of graphs and generating functions of P-partitions. Moreover, numerous classical bases of symmetric and quasisymmetric functions, both in commuting and noncommuting variables, can be realized as special cases of our generalized chromatic functions. We also establish product and coproduct formulas for our functions. Additionally, we construct the new Hopf algebra of r-quasisymmetric functions in noncommuting variables, and apply our functions to confirm its Hopf structure, and establish natural bases for it.

Abstract:We introduce path-conjoined graphs defined for two rooted graphs by joining their roots with a path, and investigate the chromatic symmetric functions of its two generalizations: spider-conjoined graphs and chain-conjoined graphs. By using the composition method developed by Zhou and the third author, we obtain neat positive $e_I$-expansions for the chromatic symmetric functions of clique-path-cycle graphs, path-clique-path graphs, and path-clique-clique graphs.

Abstract:The chromatic polynomial χG(q)\chi _G(q) of a graph GG counts the number of proper colorings of GG. We give an affirmative answer to the conjecture of Read and Rota-Heron-Welsh that the absolute values of the coefficients of the chromatic polynomial form a log-concave sequence. The proof is obtained by identifying χG(q)\chi _G(q) with a sequence of numerical invariants of a projective hypersurface analogous to the Milnor number of a local analytic hypersurface. As a by-product of our approach, we obtain an analogue of Kouchnirenko’s theorem relating the Milnor number with the Newton polytope; we also characterize homology classes of Pn×Pm\mathbb {P}^n \times \mathbb {P}^m corresponding to subvarieties and answer a question posed by Trung-Verma.

Abstract:We study the geometry of some proper 4-colorings of the vertices of sphere triangulations with degree sequence 6,...,6,2,2,2. Such triangulations are the simplest examples which have non-negative combinatorial curvature. The examples we construct, which are roughly extremal in some sense, are based on a novel geometric interpretation of continued fractions. We also present a conjectural sharp "isoperimetric inequality" for colorings of this kind of triangulation.

Monochromatic subgraphs in iterated triangulations

Abstract:For integers $n\ge 0$, an iterated triangulation $Tr(n)$ is defined recursively as follows: $Tr(0)$ is the plane triangulation on three vertices and, for $n\ge 1$, $Tr(n)$ is the plane triangulation obtained from the plane triangulation $Tr(n-1)$ by, for each inner face $F$ of $Tr(n-1)$, adding inside $F$ a new vertex and three edges joining this new vertex to the three vertices incident with $F$. In this paper, we show that there exists a 2-edge-coloring of $Tr(n)$ such that $Tr(n)$ contains no monochromatic copy of the cycle $C_k$ for any $k\ge 5$. As a consequence, the answer to one of two questions asked by Axenovich, Schade, Thomassen and Ueckerdt is negative. We also determine the radius two graphs $H$ for which there exists $n$ such that every 2-edge-coloring of $Tr(n)$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$, extending a result of the above authors for radius two trees.

Balanced-chromatic number and Hadwiger-like conjectures

Abstract:Motivated by different characterizations of planar graphs and the 4-Color Theorem, several structural results concerning graphs of high chromatic number have been obtained. Toward strengthening some of these results, we consider the \emph{balanced chromatic number}, $\chi_b(\hat{G})$, of a signed graph $\hat{G}$. This is the minimum number of parts into which the vertices of a signed graph can be partitioned so that none of the parts induces a negative cycle. This extends the notion of the chromatic number of a graph since $\chi(G)=\chi_b(\tilde{G})$, where $\tilde{G}$ denotes the signed graph obtained from~$G$ by replacing each edge with a pair of (parallel) positive and negative edges. We introduce a signed version of Hadwiger's conjecture as follows. Conjecture: If a signed graph $\hat{G}$ has no negative loop and no $\tilde{K_t}$-minor, then its balanced chromatic number is at most $t-1$. We prove that this conjecture is, in fact, equivalent to Hadwiger's conjecture and show its relation to the Odd Hadwiger Conjecture. Motivated by these results, we also consider the relation between subdivisions and balanced chromatic number. We prove that if $(G, \sigma)$ has no negative loop and no $\tilde{K_t}$-subdivision, then it admits a balanced $\frac{79}{2}t^2$-coloring. This qualitatively generalizes a result of Kawarabayashi (2013) on totally odd subdivisions.

Abstract:The paper gives some multi-dimensional extensions of Hindman's finite sum theorem. In particular, by the method of this paper, we prove that for any finite coloring of $\mathbb N$, there are $a,b\in \mathbb N$ such that there exist (infinitely many) pairs $(x,y),(u,v)\in \mathbb N^2$ such that the two sets $\{ax,ay,xy,a(x+y)\}$ and $\{u+b,v+b,uv+b,u+v\}$ are monochromatic.

Abstract:Hindman's finite sums theorem states that in any finite coloring of the naturals, there is an infinite sequence all of whose finite subset sums are the same color. In 1979, Hindman showed that there is a finite coloring of the naturals so that no infinite sequence has all of its pairwise sums and pairwise products the same color. Hindman conjectured that for any $n$, a finite coloring of the naturals contains $n$ numbers all of whose subset sums and subset products are the same color. In this paper we prove the version of this statement where we color the rationals instead of the integers. In other words, we show that the pattern $\{ \sum_{i \in S}x_i, \prod_{i \in S}x_i \}$, where $S$ ranges over all nonempty subsets of $[n]$, is partition regular over the rationals.

Abstract:A total coloring of a graph $G$ is a coloring of its vertices and edges such that adjacent or incident vertices and edges are not colored with the same color. A total $[k]$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a total coloring of $G$ by using the color set $[k]=\{1,2,\ldots ,k\}$. Let $f(v)$ denote the sum of the colors of a vertex $v$ and the colors of all incident edges of $v$. A total $[k]$-neighbor sum distinguishing-coloring of $G$ is a total $[k]$-coloring of $G$ such that for each edge $uv\in E(G)$, $f(u)\ne f(v)$. Let $G$ be a graph which can be embedded in a surface of nonnegative Euler characteristic. In this paper, it is proved that the total neighbor sum distinguishing chromatic number of $G$ is $\Delta (G)+2$ if $\Delta (G)\ge 14$, where $\Delta (G)$ is the maximum degree of $G$.
Chromatic symmetric functions via the group algebra of $S_n$

Abstract:We prove some Schur positivity results for the chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ of a (hyper)graph $G$, using connections to the group algebra of the symmetric group. The first such connection works for (hyper)forests $F$: we describe the Schur coefficients of $X_F$ in terms of eigenvalues of a product of Hermitian idempotents in the group algebra, one factor for each edge (a more general formula of similar shape holds for all chordal graphs). Our main application of this technique is to prove a conjecture of Taylor on the Schur positivity of certain $X_F$, which implies Schur positivity of the formal group laws associated to various combinatorial generating functions. We also introduce the pointed chromatic symmetric function $X_{G,v}$ associated to a rooted graph $(G,v)$. We prove that if $X_{G,v}$ and $X_{H,w}$ are positive in the generalized Schur basis of Strahov, then the chromatic symmetric function of the wedge sum of $(G,v)$ and $(H,w)$ is Schur positive.

The chromatic index of finite projective spaces

Abstract:A line coloring of PG$(n,q)$, the $n$-dimensional projective space over GF$(q)$, is an assignment of colors to all lines of PG$(n,q)$ so that any two lines with the same color do not intersect. The chromatic index of PG$(n,q)$, denoted by $\chi'(PG(n,q))$, is the least number of colors for which a coloring of PG$(n,q)$ exists. This paper translates the problem of determining the chromatic index of PG$(n,q)$ to the problem of examining the existences of PG$(3,q)$ and PG$(4,q)$ with certain properties. In particular, it is shown that for any odd integer $n$ and $q\in\{3,4,8,16\}$, $\chi'(PG(n,q))=(q^n-1)/(q-1)$, which implies the existence of a parallelism of PG$(n,q)$ for any odd integer $n$ and $q\in\{3,4,8,16\}$.

A geometric realization of the chromatic symmetric function of a unit interval graph

Abstract:Shareshian-Wachs, Brosnan-Chow, and Guay-Pacquet [Adv. Math. ${\bf 295}$ (2016), ${\bf 329}$ (2018), <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1601.05498" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1601.05498">arXiv:1601.05498</a>] realized the chromatic (quasi-)symmetric function of a unit interval graph in terms of Hessenberg varieties. Here we exhibit another realization of these chromatic (quasi-)symmetric functions in terms of the Betti cohomology of the variety $\mathscr X_\Psi$ defined in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2301.00862" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2301.00862">arXiv:2301.00862</a>]. This yields a new inductive combinatorial expression of these chromatic symmetric functions. Based on this, we propose a geometric refinement of the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture, whose validity would imply the Shareshian-Wachs conjecture.

Abstract:A classical result of Erdős and Rademacher (1955) indicates a supersaturation phenomenon. It says that if $G$ is a graph on $n$ vertices with at least $\lfloor {n^2}/{4} \rfloor +1$ edges, then $G$ contains at least $\lfloor {n}/{2}\rfloor$ triangles. We prove a spectral version of Erdős--Rademacher's theorem. Moreover, Mubayi [Adv. Math. 225 (2010)] extends the result of Erdős and Rademacher from a triangle to any color-critical graph. It is interesting to study the extension of Mubayi from a spectral perspective. However, it is not apparent to measure the increment on the spectral radius of a graph comparing to the traditional edge version (Mubayi's result). In this paper, we provide a way to measure the increment on the spectral radius of a graph and propose a spectral version on the counting problems for color-critical graphs.

Abstract:The bivariate chromatic polynomial $\chi_G(x,y)$ of a graph $G = (V, E)$, introduced by Dohmen-Pönitz-Tittmann (2003), counts all $x$-colorings of $G$ such that adjacent vertices get different colors if they are $\le y$. We extend this notion to mixed graphs, which have both directed and undirected edges. Our main result is a decomposition formula which expresses $\chi_G(x,y)$ as a sum of bivariate order polynomials (Beck-Farahmand-Karunaratne-Zuniga Ruiz 2020), and a combinatorial reciprocity theorem for $\chi_G(x,y)$.

Schwarz reflections and the Tricorn

Abstract:We continue our exploration of the family $\mathcal{S}$ of Schwarz reflection maps with respect to the cardioid and a circle which was initiated in our earlier work. We prove that there is a natural combinatorial bijection between the geometrically finite maps of this family and those of the basilica limb of the Tricorn, which is the connectedness locus of quadratic anti-holomorphic polynomials. We also show that every geometrically finite map in $\mathcal{S}$ arises as a conformal mating of a unique geometrically finite quadratic anti-holomorphic polynomial and a reflection map arising from the ideal triangle group. We then follow up with a combinatorial mating description for the periodically repelling maps in $\mathcal{S}$. Finally, we show that the locally connected topological model of the connectedness locus of $\mathcal{S}$ is naturally homeomorphic to such a model of the basilica limb of the Tricorn.

Non-Schur-positivity of chromatic symmetric functions

Abstract:We provide a formula for every Schur coefficient in the chromatic symmetric function of a graph in terms of special rim hook tabloids. This formula is useful in confirming the non-Schur positivity of the chromatic symmetric function of a graph, especially when Stanley's stable partition method does not work. As applications, we determine Schur positive fan graphs and Schur positive complete tripartite graphs. We show that any squid graph obtained by adding $n$ leaves to a common vertex on an $m$-vertex cycle is not Schur positive if $m\ne 2n-1$, and conjecture that neither are the squid graphs with $m=2n-1$.

Odd-Sum Colorings of Planar Graphs

Abstract:A \emph{coloring} of a graph $G$ is a map $f:V(G)\to \mathbb{Z}^+$ such that $f(v)\ne f(w)$ for all $vw\in E(G)$. A coloring $f$ is an \emph{odd-sum} coloring if $\sum_{w\in N[v]}f(w)$ is odd, for each vertex $v\in V(G)$. The \emph{odd-sum chromatic number} of a graph $G$, denoted $\chi_{os}(G)$, is the minimum number of colors used (that is, the minimum size of the range) in an odd-sum coloring of $G$. Caro, Petruševski, and Škrekovski showed, among other results, that $\chi_{os}(G)$ is well-defined for every finite graph $G$ and, in fact, $\chi_{os}(G)\le 2\chi(G)$. Thus, $\chi_{os}(G)\le 8$ for every planar graph $G$ (by the 4 Color Theorem), $\chi_{os}(G)\le 6$ for every triangle-free planar graph $G$ (by Grötzsch's Theorem), and $\chi_{os}(G)\le 4$ for every bipartite graph. Caro et al. asked, for every even $\Delta\ge 4$, whether there exists $g_{\Delta}$ such that if $G$ is planar with maximum degree $\Delta$ and girth at least $g_{\Delta}$ then $\chi_{os}(G)\le 5$. They also asked, for every even $\Delta\ge 4$, whether there exists $g_{\Delta}$ such that if $G$ is planar and bipartite with maximum degree $\Delta$ and girth at least $g_{\Delta}$ then $\chi_{os}(G)\le 3$. We answer both questions negatively. We also refute a conjecture they made, resolve one further problem they posed, and make progress on another.

Achromatic colorings of polarity graphs

Abstract:A complete partition of a graph $G$ is a partition of the vertex set such that there is at least one edge between any two parts. The largest $r$ such that $G$ has a complete partition into $r$ parts, each of which is an independent set, is the achromatic number of $G$. We determine the achromatic number of polarity graphs coming from generalized polygons. Our colorings of a family of unitary polarity graphs are used to solve a problem of Axenovich and Martin on complete partitions of $C_4$-free graphs. Furthermore, these colorings prove that there are sequences of graphs which are optimally complete and have unbounded degree, a problem that had been studied for the sequence of hypercubes independently by Roichman, and Ahlswede, Bezrukov, Blokhuis, Metsch, and Moorhouse.
