Abstract:Due to the demand for bugs fixing and features enhancements, developers inevitably need to update in-use software systems. Instead of shutting down a running software before updating, it is often desirable and sometimes mandatory to patch the running software system on the fly, with a mechanism generally referred as dynamic software updating (DSU). Practical DSU strategies often require manual specification of update points in the program for performing dynamic updates. At these points DSU systems will update the program code, and also migrate the program state to the new version program (using state transformer functions). However, finding appropriate update points is non-trivial because the choice of update points has great influence on two competing factors: the timeliness of DSU and the complexity of state transformer functions; and to strike a good balance between them requires a deep understanding of both versions of the program. In this paper, we propose a technique that automates the recommendation of update points. We carried out a preliminary study about the feasibility and effectiveness of this technique. By conducting a set of experiments based on an actual DSU case, we found that our technique is automatic, wide-covered and efficient.

Abstract:Dynamic Software Update (DSU) is a technique to upgrade running programs without shutting them down. DSU can improve system availability and maintenance flexibility. However, its adoption in practice is still limited due to the risk of system misbehavior that careless DSU may bring. To reduce this risk we propose a formal framework for the specification and verification of DSU. Different from previous approaches where DSU is described from the viewpoint of program's internal state transitions, our framework focuses on program's external behavior and its effect on its environment. This more abstract view avoids over specification of DSU and allows for better DSU flexibility. Based on this framework, we also devise a mechanism that automatically synthesizes runtime monitors to improve DSU timeliness without compromising its safety.

Abstract:Dynamic software updating (DSU) enables a program to be patched on the fly without being shutdown. This paper addresses the practicality problem of the recent research on DSU systems, and presents Replus, a new DSU system that balances practicality and functionality. Replus aims to retain backward binary compatibility and support multi-threaded programs. In addition, it does not require customers to have developer-level software knowledge. More importantly, without specific compiler support, Replus can patch programs that are difficult to be updated at runtime, as well as programs that may incur an indefinite delay in DSU. The key technique of our solution is to update the stack elements for the patched program using two new mechanisms: Immediate Stack Updating, which immediately updates the stack of a thread, and timely stack updating, which only updates the stack frames of the necessary functions without affecting others. Replus also develops an Instruction Level Updating mechanism, which is more efficient for certain security patches. We used popular server applications as test suites to evaluate the effectiveness of Replus. The experimental results demonstrated that Replus can successfully update all the test suites with negligible impact on application performance.

Abstract:We study the dynamic software update problem for programs interacting with an environment that is not necessarily updated. We argue that such updates should be backward compatible. We propose a general definition of backward compatibility and cases of backward compatible program update. Based on our detailed study of real world program evolution, we propose classes of backward compatible update for interactive programs, which are included at an average of 32% of all studied program changes. The definitions of update classes are parameterized by our novel framework of program equivalence, which generalizes existing results on program equivalence to non-terminating executions. Our study of backward compatible updates is based on a typed extension of W language.

Abstract:The information about the states of the dynamic system is crucial for the successful implementation of model-based dynamic optimization and nonlinear model predictive control strategies. For large-scale nonlinear systems, the moving horizon estimation and globally iterated extended Kalman filtering may not be appropriate for applications with short sampling periods because of the time consuming computation. In addition, the modelling error and the unmeasured disturbances should be considered by the feedback of the real-time measurements. In this paper, a new approach is proposed in which the computation time and the use of real-time measurements are taken into account. The independent variables are reconciled by dynamic optimization, and the state variables are obtained by one-step simulation under the reconciled independent variables. The approach is verified on a pilot heat-integrated distillation column system. The results show that the proposed approach is effectiveness for the real-time state estimation of nonlinear large-scale systems.

Abstract:The continuous requirements of evolving a delivered software system and the rising cost of shutting down a running software system are forcing researchers and practitioners to find ways of updating software as it runs. Dynamic update is a kind of software evolution that updates a running program without interruption. This paper covers the fundamental issues of the mechanisms of dynamic update theoretically. Based on a similarity analysis of many typical approaches to dynamic update during the past decades, we propose a unified formal model (namely, Dynamic Update Connector) to specify mechanisms of updating an architectural component, and reason about its properties. The model borrows the concept of connectors from software architecture community and is specified using process algebra CSP. We also demonstrate the applications of our DUC model.

Abstract:Dynamic software updating (DSU) can upgrade a running program on-the-fly by directly replacing the in-memory code and reusing existing runtime state (e.g., heap objects) for the updated execution. Additionally, it is usually necessary to transform the runtime state into a proper new state to avoid inconsistencies that arise during runtime states reuse among different versions of a program. However, such transformations mostly require human efforts, which is time-consuming and error-prone. This paper presents AOTES, an approach to automating object transformations for dynamic updating of Java programs. AOTES tries to generate the new state by re-executing a method invocation history and leverages symbolic execution to synthesize the history from the current object state without any recording. We evaluated AOTES on software updates taken from Apache Tomcat, Apache FTP Server and Apache SSHD Server. Experimental results show that AOTES successfully handled 47 of 57 object transformations of 18 updated classes, while two state-of-the-art approaches only handled 11 and 6 of 57, respectively.

Abstract:Dynamic software updating (DSU) is a technique to upgrade a running software system on the fly without stopping the system. During updating, the runtime state of the modified components of the system needs to be properly transformed into a new state, so that the modified components can still correctly interact with the rest of the system. However, the transformation is non-trivial to realize due to the gap between the low-level implementations of two versions of a program. This paper presents AOTES, a novel approach to automating object transformations for dynamic updating of Java programs. AOTES bridges the gap by abstracting the old state of an object to a history of method invocations, and re-invoking the new version of all methods in the history to get the desired new state. AOTES requires no instrumentation to record any data and thus has no overhead during normal execution. We propose and implement a novel technique that can synthesize an equivalent history of method invocations based on the current object state only. We evaluated AOTES on software updates taken from Apache Commons Collections, Tomcat, FTP Server and SSHD Server. Experimental results show that AOTES successfully handled 51 of 61 object transformations of 21 updated classes, while two state-of-the-art approaches only handled 11 and 6 of 61, respectively.
Towards Dynamic Component Updating: A Flexible and Lightweight Approach

Abstract:Dynamic component updating, which allows a running system to be updated without interrupting its execution, has been recognized as an important requirement for distributed systems. However, most of existing approaches complicate the component development by making the component’s updating logic mixed with its business logic. This paper proposes a flexible and lightweight approach for supporting dynamic component updating. Our approach allows multiple versions of a component to co-exist with the support of runtime version management mechanism. Multiple polices are provided to coordinate behaviors of different component versions. In this way, seamless system updating can be achieved and the reliability during updating is also guaranteed. Moreover, our approach separates the component’s updating logic from its business logic and little burden are placed on developers. The experimental results show that the performance overhead is trivial.

Abstract:Dynamic software updating (DSU) is a technique that can update running software systems without stopping them. Most existing approaches require programmer participation to guarantee the correctness of dynamic updating. However, manually preparing dynamic updating is error-prone and time-consuming. Therefore, other approaches prefer to aggressively perform updating without programmer intervention, which may definitely lead to unanticipated runtime errors. To reduce human effort and enhance the reliability for dynamic updating, we leverage automatic runtime recovery (ARR) techniques to recover runtime errors caused by improper dynamic updating. This paper presents ADSU, a fully automatic DSU system using ARR. We evaluate ADSU with real updates from widely used open source software systems, i.e., Apache Tomcat, Apache FTP Server and jEdit. The preliminary results have shown that ADSU succeeds in automatically applying 11 of 16 real-world updates that existing counterparts cannot.

Abstract:Dynamic software updating (DSU) aims to patch software for fixing bugs or adding functions while it is running. Before update, developers need to make a dynamic patch ready, which includes update points, state transformers and a corresponding code patch. Existing practice mostly assumes manual preparation of dynamic patches, but this process can be both time-consuming and error-prone. Some pioneer work attempts to automate this process, but cannot guarantee the generation of safe dynamic patches for most updates. This paper presents a novel approach CURE to automatically generating safe dynamic patches. CURE takes two versions of software and their test cases as input, and automatically synthesizes state transformers and selects update points. We applied CURE to 28 updates for three real-world server software. The experimental results show that CURE generated safe dynamic patches automatically and their corresponding updates achieved an 88.7% success rate, as compared to 74.3% for TOS and 61.2% for default patches.

Abstract:It is important to enable reasoning about the meaning and possible effects of updates to ensure that the updated system operates correctly. A formal, mathematical model of dynamic update should be developed, in order to understand by both users and implementors of update technology what design choices can be considered. In this paper, we define a formal calculus $update\pi$, a variant extension of higher-order $\pi$ calculus, to model dynamic updates of component-based software, which is language and technology independent. The calculus focuses on following main concepts: proper granularity of update, timing of dynamic update, state transformation between versions, update failure check and recovery. We describe a series of rule on safe component updates to model some general processes of dynamic update and discuss its reduction semantics coincides with a labelled transition system semantics that illustrate the expressive power of these calculi.

Low-disruptive dynamic updating of Java applications.

Abstract:Context: In-use software systems are destined to change in order to fix bugs or add new features. Shutting down a running system before updating it is a normal practice, but the service unavailability can be annoying and sometimes unacceptable. Dynamic software updating (DSU) migrates a running software system to a new version without stopping it. State-of-the-art Java DSU systems are unsatisfactory as they may cause a non-negligible system pause during updating.Objective: In this paper we present Javelus, a Java HotSpot VM-based Java DSU system with very short pausing time.Method: Instead of updating everything at once when the running application is suspended, Javelus only updates the changed code during the suspension, and migrates stale objects on-demand after the application is resumed. With a careful design this lazy approach neither sacrifices the update flexibility nor introduces unnecessary object validity checks or access indirections.Results: Evaluation experiments show that Javelus can reduce the updating pausing time by one to two orders of magnitude without introducing observable overheads before and after the dynamic updating.Conclusion: Our experience with Javelus indicates that low-disruptive and type-safe dynamic updating of Java applications can be practically achieved with a lazy updating approach. A Systematic Mapping Study on Dynamic Metrics and Software Quality

Abstract:Several important aspects of software product quality can be evaluated using dynamic metrics that effectively capture and reflect the software's true runtime behavior. While the extent of research in this field is still relatively limited, particularly when compared to research on static metrics, the field is growing, given the inherent advantages of dynamic metrics. The aim of this work is to systematically investigate the body of research on dynamic software metrics to identify issues associated with their selection, design and implementation. Mapping studies are being increasingly used in software engineering to characterize an emerging body of research and to identify gaps in the field under investigation. In this study we identified and evaluated 60 works based on a set of defined selection criteria. These studies were further classified and analyzed to identify their relativity to future dynamic metrics research. The classification was based on three different facets: research focus, research type and contribution type. We found a strong body of research related to dynamic coupling and cohesion metrics, with most works also addressing the abstract notion of software complexity. Specific opportunities for future work relate to a much broader range of quality dimensions.

Abstract:Dynamic policy enables the system to adjust the policies according to the changing circumstance, and makes the system more flexible and adaptive. We have proposed a dynamic model and the idea is to dynamically change the policy according to a pair of states rather than one state, which provides more information for the policy decision making, thus makes policy more accurate. The dynamic policy architecture based on this model is built in this paper, and we describe the components and steps of detecting a change, deciding the pair of current and previous states and picking up the policy according to the change.

Abstract:Practical software systems are subject to frequent updates for fixing their bugs or addressing new requirements. Updating a software system without stopping and restarting it is desired, as this helps reduce the redeployment cost as well as achieving the high availability. Existing techniques for dynamically updating Java programs may introduce noticeable pauses during which these programs are unable to function. We in this paper present Javelus, a dynamic Java update system with greatly reduced pausing time but without sacrificing update flexibility and system efficiency. Different from previous approaches, Javelus uses a lazy update mechanism with which an object-to-update will not be updated until it is really used. We implemented Javelus on top of an industry-strength OpenJDK HotSpot VM. We evaluated Javelus with real updates to Tomcat 7 and the same micro array benchmark used in evaluating Jvolve and DCE VM. The experiments report promising results that Javelus only incurred a pausing time two orders of magnitude smaller than those of Jvolve and DCE VM.

Abstract:Continuously running systems require kernel software updates applied to them without downtime. Facilitating fast reboots, or delaying an update may not be a suitable solution in many environments, especially in pay-per-use high-performance computing clusters and mission critical systems. Such systems will not reap the benefits of new kernel features, and will continue to operate with kernel security holes unpatched, at least until the next scheduled maintenance downtime. To address these problems we developed an on-the-fly kernel updating system that enables commodity operating systems to gain adaptive and mutative capabilities without kernel recompilation or reboot. Our system, DynAMOS, employs a novel and efficient dynamic code instrumentation technique termed adaptive function cloning . Execution flow can be switched adaptively among multiple editions of functions, possibly concurrently running. This approach becomes the foundation for dynamic replacement of non-quiescent kernel subsystems when the timeliness of an update depends on synchronization of multiple kernel paths. We illustrate our experience by dynamically updating core subsystems of the Linux kernel.

Abstract:SDN controllers must be periodically modified to add features, improve performance, and fix bugs, but current techniques for implementing dynamic updates are inadequate. Simply halting old controllers and bringing up new ones can cause state to be lost, which often leads to incorrect behavior-e.g., if the state represents hosts blacklisted by a firewall, then traffic that should be blocked may be allowed to pass through. Techniques based on record and replay can reconstruct state automatically, but they are expensive to deploy and can lead to incorrect behavior. Problematic scenarios are especially likely to arise in distributed controllers and with semantics-altering updates. This paper presents a new approach to implementing dynamic controller updates based on explicit state transfer. Instead of attempting to infer state changes automatically-an approach that is expensive and fundamentally incomplete-our framework gives programmers effective tools for implementing correct updates that avoid major disruptions. We develop primitives that enable programmers to directly (and easily, in most cases) initialize the new controller's state as a function of old state and we design protocols that ensure consistent behavior during the transition. We also present a prototype implementation called Morpheus, and evaluate its effectiveness on representative case studies.

Abstract:We present Dionysus, a system for fast, consistent network updates in software-defined networks. Dionysus encodes as a graph the consistency-related dependencies among updates at individual switches, and it then dynamically schedules these updates based on runtime differences in the update speeds of different switches. This dynamic scheduling is the key to its speed; prior update methods are slow because they pre-determine a schedule, which does not adapt to runtime conditions. Testbed experiments and data-driven simulations show that Dionysus improves the median update speed by 53--88% in both wide area and data center networks compared to prior methods.
