Abstract:The aim was to evaluate the effects of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as a combination medication with adjuvant chemotherapy on postoperative early stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. The 314 patients with completely resected stage IB, II or IIIA cancers were assigned into vinorelbine plus cisplatin/carboplatin (NP/NC) (control, n = 158) and NP/NC with additional TCM (intervention, n = 156) groups. The primary endpoint was QOL scores; secondary endpoints were the toxicity and safety of the regimens. The NP/NC regimen caused mild (grade 1 or 2) non-hematologic toxic effects in the patients comprising vomiting (43.6%), fatigue (36.9%), pain (23%), dry mouth (27.6%) and diarrhea (7.9%). The incidence of adverse events was significantly lower in the intervention group than in the control group (0.57% vs 4.02%, P = 0.037). Transient severe (grade 3 or 4) hematological toxic effects occurred less often (hemoglobin reduction (11.9 vs 22.5 percent) and total bilirubin increased (to 42.1 vs 46.2%) in the intervention compared to the control group during the 2nd chemotherapy cycle. When combined with adjuvant chemotherapy, TCM led to partial relief of symptoms in addition to a reduction of side-effects and adverse events caused by the NP/NC regimens.

Abstract:Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for about 85% of the total amount of lung cancer. Chemotherapy is the major treatment for it, but accompanied by many adverse reactions and side effects. In recent years, the combination of traditional Chinese medicine and chemotherapy researches revealed that traditional Chinese medicine in the process of chemotherapy produced an effective synergistic attenuated effect, especially outstanding in the therapy of lung cancer. This paper summarized the experimental studies of traditional Chinese medicine combined with chemotherapy for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer. The combination therapy mainly displayed the efficacy in five aspects: inhibiting the growth of tumor cell and promoting apoptosis, reversing tumor drug resistance and sensitizing effect, enhancing immunity, improving curative effect, reducing side effects and adverse reactions. The series of research results showed that traditional Chinese medicine combined with chemotherapy for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer has a significant effect, as well as a wide range of clinical applications.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To observe the effect of Chinese medicinal herbs (CMH) and chemotherapy on non-small cell lung cancer. METHODS:Comparing the therapeutic effects of three treatment regimens on 58 advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients who were treated with CMH plus chemotherapy (CT), 28 cases treated with CT only, and 24 cases treated with CMH alone. RESULTS:Effective rates (partial remission + complete remission) were 22.9% in CMH + CT group, 13.6% both in CT and in CMH group. There were no significant differences between these three groups according to the short-term results (P > 0.05). Mean survival time (month) for CMH + CT, CT and CMH groups were 10.2, 5.3 and 8.0 respectively. The survival rate (Kaplan Meicr method) of both CMH + CT and CMH group were significantly higher than that of CT group (P < 0.01, P < 0.05) but no significant difference between CMH and CMH + CT group (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION:Chinese medicinal herbs were helpful to improve median survival time and survival rate of patients with advanced NSCLC.

Abstract:Objective To observe the effects of Buzhongyiqi Tang plus Shashenmaidong Tang(BTST)combined with chemotherapy on advanced non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC). Methods A total of 110 patients with confirmed diagnosis of advanced non-small cell lung cancer between January 2010 and October 2013 were divided to treatment group(BTST treatment combined with chemotherepy of NP regimen, n = 55) and control group(chemotherepy of NP regimen, n = 55) and all eligible patients received two cycles of chemotherapy at least. The clinical efficacy was evaluated by tumor body, Karnorfsky score, toxicity of the drug and improvement of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) symptom after two cycles of chemotherapy. Results All patients were evaluable for efficacy. There were no significant differences in efficacy of tumor body between two groups. However, the KPS score, chemotherapy toxicity and improvement of TCM symptoms in treatment group had statistical significance when compared with those in control group(P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). Conclusion BTST can improve the quality of life and relieve side and toxic effects and TCM symptoms for patients with advanced NSCLC.

Abstract:Objective: We conducted this study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients who underwent chemotherapy. Design: This was a prospective, open-label, randomized controlled trial. NSCLC patients at stage IIIA, IIIB, or IV were randomly assigned to either TCM plus chemotherapy or chemotherapy alone. The comprehensive TCM treatment consisted of Kang Ai injection, herbal decoction, and Zhenqifuzheng capsules. The primary endpoint was quality of life (QOL) measured by the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Lung version 4.0. The secondary endpoints were chemotherapy completion rate, tumor response, and adverse events. All assessments were done at baseline, the third week, and the sixth week. Results: Thirty-nine participants were randomly assigned to the treatment group and 36 to the control group. The QOL scores were significantly improved in the treatment group compared with those of the control group in social well-being (cycle 1, P = .048; cycle 2, P = .015), emotional well-being (cycle 1, P = .047; cycle 2, P = 4.29E-05), and functional well-being (cycle 1, P = .030; cycle 2, P = .003), while the QOL scores in the above 3 domains declined in the control group (P < .05). Both groups had a decline in the physical well-being score (cycle 1, P = .042; cycle 2, P = .017) and lung cancer symptom score (cycle 1, P = .001; cycle 2, P = .001) after 2 courses of intervention. The deterioration in physical well-being and lung cancer symptoms was noticeably smaller in the treatment group (P < .05). There were significant differences between the 2 groups in social well-being, emotional well-being, functional well-being, lung cancer symptom domain, and the total score (P < .05). Patients in the treatment group had a significantly lower incidence of platelet reduction than the control group (P = .028) after 2 cycles of treatment. No significant difference in nonhematological adverse events (AEs) was observed. Conclusion: This study illustrated that comprehensive TCM treatment could promote the QOL of NSCLC patients, alleviate symptoms, and reduce the AEs caused by chemotherapy, verifying the synergistic and attenuating effects of TCM in NSCLC patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Abstract:Background: To evaluate the effect of qi-nourishing essence-replenishing Chinese herbal medicine combined with chemotherapy in survival of advanced non-small-cell lung cancer(NSCLC) patients with essence and qi deficiency. Methods: A prospective multi-centered randomized controlled study was conducted, and 266 advanced NSCLC patients were enrolled. 126 patients in control group received Vinorelbine plus cisplatin(NP) chemotherapy combined with symptom-oriented Chinese herbs medication(without qi-nourishing essence-replenishing herbs); 140 patients in experimental group received NP chemotherapy combined with qi-nourishing essence-replenishing Chinese herbal medication(Kangliu Zengxiao Decoction and modified Feiyanning Decoction, during and after chemotherapy respectively). Results: One patient in control and 2 in experimental group were excluded for failure to complete two cycles of chemotherapy. During follow-up, 17 and 7 patients in control and experimental group were excluded respectively(4 and 4 for taking Gefetinib after disease progression, 4 and 2 for receiving other chemotherapeutic regimens, 9 and 1 for lost to follow-up). 239 patients were included in the final analysis (131 in experimental group and 108 in control). Median overall survival in experimental group was significantly longer than control group (14.87vs.12.97 months, P = 0. 027). In experimental and control group, 1-year, 3-year, 5-year, 7-year, and 9-year survival rates were 57% vs. 53%, 17% vs. 8%, 10% vs. 2%, 6% vs. 0%, and 6% vs. 0%, respectively. Conclusion: Qi-nourishing essence-replenishing Chinese herbal medicine combined with chemotherapy improves survival of advanced NSCLC patients with essence and qi deficiency.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Recently, differences in tumor biology have been observed between Asian and Caucasian lung cancer patients, resulting in different sensitivities to targeted therapy. To date, all registered third-generation chemotherapeutic agents have been investigated mainly in Caucasians, but little is known whether this data can be transferred to an Asian population. The aim of this study was to provide evidence about the efficacy of chemotherapy in a Chinese population.METHODS:Three thousand one hundred patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer NSCLC, treated between 2002 and 2009 with a platinum-based doublet first-line chemotherapy, including vinorelbine, gemcitabine, docetaxel or paclitaxel, were included for retrospective survival analysis.RESULTS:Overall survival (OS) was 12.1 months and progression free survival (PFS) was four months for all patients. No advantage in OS was seen for any of the four compounds. Gemcitabine was associated with a better PFS compared to the other three (P < 0.001). Docetaxel led to higher response rates, but this finding didn't reach statistical significance (P = 0,054). Chinese patients appear to have longer survival times compared to historical data in Caucasians.CONCLUSION:Our retrospective analysis suggests, that there is no difference in efficacy of third-generation chemotherapy between Asians and Caucasians.

Abstract:Non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC) is a common malignant tumor. Majority of NSCLC patients can not be cured by traditional therapies, such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy or operations. Because most of them are in advanced stage when diagnosed. After a series of phase Ⅲ clinical trials,single targeted drugs have already been approbated to be used for patients. However, the effect can not meet expectation.With the study of pathogenesis of lung cancer and targeted drugs, combined targeted therapies would be a new choice.

Abstract:e18000 Background: Chemotherapy plays an important role in the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but the overall survival (OS) and the median survival time (MST) are not satisfactory. Chinese herbs (CH) is a popular treatment for NSCLC in china. Our purpose was to observe the efficacy of CH by stages combined with chemotherapy versus chemotherapy alone for NSCLC (stage III/IV). Methods: A prospective, randomized, controlled, multicenter, clinical trial was conducted on 115 patients assigned to treatment group (60) and control group (55). The control group was treated by chemotherapy (cisplatin and gemcitabine [GP]/cisplatin and vinorelbine [NP]) alone, while the treatment group was treated by chemotherapy (GP/NP) combined with CH and was administered Kangliuzengxiao decoction (KLZX) during chemotherapy course and Feiyanning decoction (FYN) maintenance after chemotherapy. End points were OS, MST, response rate, toxicity, and Karnofsky score. Results: MST was 14.47 months (95% confidence interval, 10.37 to 18.57) in treatment group compared with 10.97 months (95% confidence interval, 9.35 to 12.59) in control group (p = 0.001). 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, 5 years survival rates in treatment group were 54.8%, 24.6%, 13.2%, 5.7%, compared to control group 35.6%, 3.7%, 0%, 0% (p = 0.001). The response rates (CR+PR) were 28.3% (treatment group) and 18.2% (control group), there was no statistically significant difference in response rate between the two groups. The toxicities mainly were gastrointestinal dysfunction and myelosuppression of different degrees. Remission rate of nausea/vomiting symptoms was high after patients treated with CH in treatment group (p < 0.05), myelosuppression was more significant in control group than in treatment group (p < 0.05). Karnofsky score of treatment group was higher than that of control group (p < 0.01) (p < 0.01). Conclusions: In this trial, chinese herbs by stages combined with chemotherapy could prolong the MST and OS,still improve Karnofsky score, while the toxicity was not enhanced. Chinese herbal medicine was a promising maintenance treatment for advanced NSCLC. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract:Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treatment traditionally relies on Platinum-based chemotherapy along with targeted therapy and immunotherapy. However, the emergence of drug resistance due to genetic factors and the progression of late-stage metastasis pose significant challenges. In Asian medical practices, the integration of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) alongside conventional therapy has shown promise in improving treatment efficacy, ensuring safety, and mitigating adverse effects. This study aims to comprehensively summarize the prevalence and efficacy of CHM when combined with platinum-based chemotherapy in managing advanced NSCLC. Our analysis encompasses data from 14 randomized controlled trials involving 1451 patients, of which 739 received combined chemotherapy with CHMs while 712 received chemotherapy alone. Notably, the adjunctive use of traditional CHM demonstrated a marked increase in overall survival rates. Patients with NSCLC who received CHMs in combination with chemotherapy exhibited significantly higher Objective Response Rate (ORR) (RR = 1.37, 95% CI [1.20-1.58], p = .000) and Disease Control Rate (DCR) (RR = 1.13, 95% CI [1.07-1.21], p = .000) compared to those solely undergoing chemotherapy. The Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) (SMD = 1.47, 95% CI [0.30-2.64], p = 0.014) also indicated substantial improvements in the quality of life assessment, involving a total of 277 cases. The systematic review identified 88 herbs and formulas, classified into two primary categories. The first category involves tonifying qi and nourishing yin, thereby enhancing the body's immune function and boost immune therapy, fortifying its ability to combat pathogens, and inhibiting cancer cell proliferation. Herbs such as Rx. Astragali (Huangqi), Rz. Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Baizhu), Rx. Glehniae (Shashen), and Rx. Ophiopogonis (Maidong) were among the most frequently prescribed CHMs. The second category consists of heat-clearing and toxin-removing medicines, effectively regulating the inflammatory response and infection around tumors while exhibiting potent anti-tumor activity, such as Herba Salviae Chinensis (ShiJianChuan) and Selaginella Doederleinii (ShiShangBai). The evidence derived from the meta-analysis strongly suggests that adjunctive CHM treatment can significantly enhance chemotherapy's effectiveness and improve tumor response. Subsequent research focusing on the development and application of CHM is warranted for the advancement of NSCLC treatment methodologies. Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the therapeutic effects of traditional Chinese medicine puls GP regimen for advanced non-small cell lung cancer patients.Methods:From May 2009 to May 2011,two hundred and four histologically or cy-tologically confirmed stage IIIB and IV NSCLC patients with no other diseases and ECOG performance status 0-2 were enrolled in a randomized,blind,controlled trial,either trial group: GP regimen(gemcitabine 1250mg/m3,on day 1 and day 8;cisplatin 80 mg/m3 on day 1) plus traditional Chinese medicine(days 10 to 21) or control group:GP regimen(gemcitabine 1250mg/m3,on day 1 and day 8,cisplatin 80 mg/m3 on day 1).every 3 weeks for 1 cycle,for2-4cycles.The trial endpoints included 1-year survival rate,progression-free survival and relief rate of clinical symptoms and safety.Results:Of 200 assessable patients,1-year survival rate was 54.5% in trial group and 34.1% in control group(P<0.05).The median FPS was 7months [95%CI,6.306-7.694] and 6 months[95%CI,5.385-6.615] for trial group and control group respectively(P<0.05).The relief rate of clinical symptoms in trial group was higher than that of those in control group(P<0.05).There were no significant differences in incidence of hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity between trial group and control group.In addition,the trial group reduced the incidence of hematologic toxicity,fatigue,decreased appetite.Conclusion:The addition of traditional Chinese medicine to GP regimen results in significantly and clinically meaningful improvement in survival rate,progression-free survival,incidence of hematologic toxicity and relief rate of clinical symptoms compared with GP alone in advanced NSCIC patients.Traditional Chinese medicine in combination with chemotherapy shows a synergic activity,favorable toxicity and economic profile in advanced NSCLC cancer patients.

Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the efficacy of combined xiaoaiping injection with chemotherapy for the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC).Methods:Sixty-two cases with advanced non-small cell lung cancer were divided into two groups.Thirty patients of test group were treated with combination of xiaoaiping injection and chemotherapy,and 32 patients of control group only received chemotherapy.The curative effects were evaluated after 2 circles.Results:The total efficiency rates in two groups were 53.5% and 43.8%(P>0.05).The life quality of patients in test group is superior to the patients in control group(P<0.05).The values of nature killer cells and CD4/CD8 after treated were enhanced than those of pre-treated in test group,and declined in control group(P<0.01).The incidence rates of the side effect in test group were lowered than those of control group,but no apparent difference(P>0.05).Conclusion:Combined xiaoaiping injection and chemotherapy can improve the curative effect of advanced non-small cell lung cancer and the patients' life quality,as well as enhancing the immune function.

Abstract:BackgroundThe clinical outcomes of patients with NSCLC who progressed after first-line treatments remain poor. The purpose of this study was to assess the advantage of antiangiogenic therapy plus standard treatment versus standard treatment alone for this population of patients.MethodsWe conducted a rigorous search using electronic databases for eligible studies reporting antiangiogenic therapy combined with standard second-line chemotherapy versus standard second-line treatment for patient who progressed after front-line treatment. Pooled risk ratio and 95% confidence intervals were calculated using proper statistical method. Predefined subgroup analyses were conducted to identify the potential proper patients.ResultsThirteen phase II/III RCTs which involved a total of 8358 participants were included. Overall, there was significant improvement in OS (HR 0.94, 95% CI: 0.89-0.99, p = 0.03), PFS (HR 0.80, 95% CI: 0.76-0.84, p < 0.00001), ORR (RR 1.75, 95% CI: 1.55-1.98, p < 0.00001) and DCR (RR 1.23, 95% CI: 1.18-1.28, p < 0.00001) in the group with antiangiogenic therapy plus standard treatment versus the group with standard treatment alone. Subgroup analysis showed that OS benefit was presented only in patients treated with docetaxel plus antiangiogenic agents (HR 0.92, 95% CI: 0.86-0.99, p = 0.02) and patients with non-squamous NSCLC (HR for OS 0.92, 95% CI: 0.86-0.99, p = 0.02).ConclusionsThis study revealed that the addition of antiangiogenic agents to the standard treatments could provide clinical benefit to NSCLC patients who failed their first-line therapy. Furthermore, proper selection of the combined standard cytotoxic agent, as well as the patient population by tumor histology, is warranted for future studies and clinical application of antiangiogenic therapy.
Traditional Chinese medicine combined with individualized chemotherapy in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer: A prospective randomized controlled trial

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and adverse effects of individualized chemotherapy combined with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in treatment for advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and its prognosis.Methods: A prospective randomized controlled trial was designed to recruit 100 eligible patients with refractory stage ⅢB-Ⅳ NSCLC from Shanghai Chest Hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University between January 1, 2013 and May 31, 2014. The 100 patients were randomized divided into study group (N = 50) and control group (N = 50). The patients in the study group received individualized chemotherapy according to the results of detection of molecular targets combined with traditional Chinese medicine by syndrome differentiation, while the patients in the control group received chemotherapy with vinorelbine and gemcitabine. The response after treatment and the quality of life score and TCM symptom score before treatment and three months after four cycles of chemotherapy (or last chemotherapy) between two groups were compared. The progression-free survival (PFS) was calculated by Kaplan-Meier method. The treatment-related adverse reactions were observed.Results: In study group, 7 patients achieved partial response (PR), 30 patients achieved stable disease (SD), and 13 patients achieved progressive disease (PD); in the control group, 3 achieved PR, 22 achieved SD, and 25 achieved PD. The response of study group was significantly better than that of the control group (P = 0.037). The median PFS in study group and the control group were 3.8 and 3.3 months, respectively; there was a significant difference between the two groups (P = 0.043). Before treatment, there were no significant differences in quality of life and TCM symptom scores between two groups (both P u003e 0.05). After treatment, the quality of life and TCM symptom scores of the study group were significantly improved as compared with those of the control group (both P u003c 0.05). The rates of fatigue and constipation in the study group were significantly higher than those in the control group (both P u003c 0.05).Conclusion: The treatment with individualized chemotherapy combined with TCM may benefit the response, clinical symptoms, quality of life and PFS of patients with advanced NSCLC. Abstract:[Objective]To analyze the effect of concurrent chemoradiotherapy and sequential chemoradiotherapy on progression free survival in patients with limited Non-small-cell Carcinoma (NSCLC) induced by chemotherapy.[Methods]One hundred and eight patients with NSCLC in our hospital were selected as the research object,the patients were randomly divided into group A and group B,each group with 54 cases.The group A received concurrent chemotherapy,the group B was treated with sequential chemotherapy.The adverse reaction rate,the therapeutic effect,the median survival after three cycles of treatment and quality of life score index were compared with between the two groups of patients.[Results]1.The curative effect of the group A was much higher than that of the group B (P ＜0.05);2.The median progression free survival in group A was significantly higher than that in group B (P ＜0.05);3.The incidence of adverse reactions in the group A was significantly lower than that in the group B (P ＜0.05);4.Before treatment,there was no significant difference in quality of life between the two groups (P ＞0.05).After the treatment of the three cycle,the quality of life score of the group A was significantly higher than that of the group B (P ＜0.05).[Conclusion]Concurrent chemoradiotherapy can significantly improve the quality of life of patients with NSCLC,which has less adverse reactions and higher quality of life scores.
Clinical Study on Concurrent Hypofractionated High-Dose Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy for Locally Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the therapeutic effects and side reaction of hypofractionated high-dose radiotherapy concurrently combined with taxel and carboplain(TC) regimen for stageⅡB and stage Ⅲ non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC).Methods 84 patients entered the protocol,in which 28 patients were with stage ⅡB,56 with stage Ⅲ.Hypofractionated high-dose radiotherapy was applied,and TC regimen chemotherapy was given for 4 cycles,repeated for 3 weeks.Results The response rate for stage ⅡB was 85.7%,stage Ⅲ 76.8%.Median survival time for stage ⅡB was 32.6 months.Median progression-free survival time was 15.5 months.1,2,and 3 year survival rate was 82.1%,57.1% and 42.9%,respectively.Median survival time for stage Ⅲ was 21.5 months.Median progression-free survival was 11.2 month.1,2,and 3-year survival rate was 73.2%,42.9%,21.4%,respectively.For radioactive esophagitis,grade Ⅰ-Ⅱ was 32.1%,Grade Ⅲ-Ⅳ was 5.4%.GradeⅠ/Ⅱ of radioactive pneumonia was 17.9%.No Grade Ⅲ-Ⅳ of radioactive pneumonia happened.Conclusion Hypofractionated high-dose radiotherapy combined with TC regimen chemotherapy concurrently is active and well tolerated for patients with stage ⅡB/Ⅲ NSCLC.

Abstract:In the course of clinical treatment for anti-tumor, the combination of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other treatment schemes can reduce toxicity and increase efficiency. The purpose of this paper is to find out the key TCM and effective components for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and analyze its therapeutic mechanism by analyzing the prescription of TCM combined with chemotherapy for NSCLC. Firstly, the prescriptions of TCM in the randomized controlled trials combined with chemotherapy for NSCLC were collected, and the core TCM was screened by frequency statistics, association rule analysis, and cluster analysis. Then, the intersection targets of the potential effects of NSCLC and core Chinese medicine were collected, and PPI analysis and enrichment analysis were performed on the intersection targets to screen the core targets, components, and pathways. The core components were verified by molecular docking and cell experiments. In this study, 269 prescriptions were collected, among which the frequency of medication for Astragalus membranaceus (HQ, in Chinese), Wolfiporia cocos (FL, in Chinese), and Atractylodes macrocephala (BZ, in Chinese) was over 100. Association rule analysis showed that they were highly correlated and clustered into the same category in cluster analysis. Their core components were quercetin, kaempferol, and isorhamnetin. The molecular docking results of the core components with the core targets AKT1 and EGFR obtained by PPI network analysis showed that they could bind stably. KEGG analysis screened 110 pathways including PI3K-Akt; the results of CCK-8 showed that quercetin, kaempferol, and isorhamnetin could effectively inhibit the proliferation of A549 cells, and isorhamnetin had the best inhibitory effect. Isorhamnetin can inhibit the migration and invasion of A549 cells, induce apoptosis and G1 phase arrest, and decrease the expression of P-PI3K and P-AKT in A549 cells. In a word, the key TCM for the treatment of NSCLC includes HQ, FL, and BZ. and its key components quercetin, kaempferol, and isorhamnetin have potential therapeutic effects on NSCLC according to the research results.

Abstract:Objective: To observe the efficacy of the combination of chemotherapy and Ginseng Rg3 on advanced non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC). Methods: In the multi-center, large-sample, randomized, double blind trial, 414 patients with Ⅲ-Ⅳ NSCLC were enrolled.199 were in the experimental group and 215 the control group. The patients in the experimental group were treated with the standard first-line chemotherapy combined with Ginseng Rg3. The patients in the control group were treated with the same chemotherapy combined with placebo. Median overall survival (OS), Karnofsky performance scale (KPS), Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) symptoms score and side effects of two groups were observed as main indexes. Results: The median OS were 12.03 months in the experimental group, which was significantly better than that in the control group (8.46 months, P<0.05). Hemoglobin and white blood cells were decreased after the first and second cycle of treatment in both groups. Both adverse events were significantly milder in the treatment group (P<0.05). In addition, after two courses of treatment, the KPS of patients was 78.95±9.14 in the experimental group and 76.77±9.15 in the control group, while the TCM symptoms score was 2.45±1.73 in the experimental group and 2.92±2.06 in the control group, with significant difference (P<0.05). Conclusions: Combination of TCM with Western medicine such as chemotherapy could prolong the survival of patients with advanced NSCLC. The combined therapy improved patients' symptoms and reduced chemotherapy induced myelosuppression.
