Abstract:Preparation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from fructose is a typical liquid-phase biomass conver-sion reaction, strongly affected by solvent media and acid catalysts, including fructose reactivity and HMF selectivity. Most works on solvent selection were conducted experimentally, however, lack of the-oretical guidance. Herein, we applied experimental and theoretical techniques to investigate solvent effects of acetone-water solvent on HMF production. Factors including product distribution, key interme-diate and byproduct identification, reaction pathways, and solvation simulation of solutes were system-atically evaluated. The results indicate that water ensures high substrate concentration and assists intermolecular hydrogen transfer to accelerate reaction rate. Various HMF degradation reactions are introduced in the presence of water, however, are significantly inhibited by acetone. Moreover, acetone increases the population of high-reactive fructofuranose isomers, thus improving HMF yield. Therefore, water and acetone play a synergistic role in HMF preparation. Also, our findings provide theoretical insights for solvent selection and methodology for studying solvent effects. (c) 2022 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:An organic compound known as 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is formed from reducing sugars in honey and various processed foods in acidic environments when they are heated through the Maillard reaction. In addition to processing, storage conditions affect the formation HMF, and HMF has become a suitable indicator of honey quality. HMF is easily absorbed from food through the gastrointestinal tract and, upon being metabolized into different derivatives, is excreted via urine. In addition to exerting detrimental effects (mutagenic, genotoxic, organotoxic and enzyme inhibitory), HMF, which is converted to a non-excretable, genotoxic compound called 5-sulfoxymethylfurfural, is beneficial to human health by providing antioxidative, anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, anti-hypoxic, anti-sickling, and anti-hyperuricemic effects. Therefore, HMF is a neo-forming contaminant that draws great attention from scientists. This review compiles updated information regarding HMF formation, detection procedures, mitigation strategies and effects of HMF on honey bees and human health.
Effects of Process on 5-Hydroxymethyl Production in Fructus Schisandra Chinensis

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To investigate the influence of process on 5-hydroxymethyl furfural(5-HMF) production level in Fructus Schisandra Chinensis, check the feasibility of 5-HMF production level in Schisandra as an index appraising Fructus Schisandra Chinensis process degree quality. METHODS Observe the effects of processing time, temperature and accessory materials on the content of 5-HMF production level of Fructus Schisandra Chinensis determined by HPLC. RESULTS There’s significant increasing trend of 5-HMF level in Fructus Schisandra Chinensis with the processing time prolonging and the temperature increasing. Processing accessory materials adding content affected the 5-HMF production level of Fructus Schisandra Chinensis with different Trends. There was an increasing trend of 5-HMF level in Fructus Schisandra Chinensis processed combination with honey but a decreasing trends of 5-HMF level in Fructus Schisandra Chinensis processed combination with vinegar or alcohol when the accessory materials contents increased. 5-HMF production level changed unconspicuous when the accessory materials contents up to 40 g.(100 g)?1. CONCLUSION 5-HMF can be regarded as an inspection index to appraise the process degree of Fructus Schisandra Chinensis in views of its character which is sensitive to every process factors.

Abstract:5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is synthesized by the thermal decomposition of the sugars. Numerous types of food products are having a significant amount of HMF. Besides the thermal processing, other food processing methods (drying and dehydration, roasting, baking and storage of the product) are important factors for the synthesis of the HMF. HMF possesses different health effects including positive and negative health effects. Only few regulatory bodies have issued the guidelines and limits related to HMF. The present review has been planned to explore the HMF in terms of synthesis, occurrence, the effect of food processing, health effects and the safety guidelines.

Abstract:With the dwindling availability of fossil fuel resources and the dramatic increase in demand, 5-methoxymethylfurfural (MMF) obtained from renewable biomass resources has great potential as a fossil fuel alternative. In this work, a high yield (80.5%) of MMF was obtained from fructose catalyzed by Amberlyst-15 with the assistance of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in methanol at 100 degrees C for 10 h. Based on a detailed investigation of the reaction mechanism through the effects of DMSO, Amberlyst-15, reaction time, and reaction temperature on MMF yield and the existence of intermediates proved by FTIR, a two-step pathway was proposed: (1) DMSO and H ion on Amberlyst-15 act as a joint-catalyst [DMSOH](+), facilitating the dehydration of fructose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and (2) [DMSOH](+) assists the etherification of HMF with methanol into MMF, which is the rate-determining step. This finding expands the concept of biomass conversion into biomass fuels and plays a vital role in catalyst screen and design, reaction medium selection, and industrial applications.

Abstract:5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) can be widely converted into value-added chemicals and fuels production. Herein, we reported a sustainable and efficient approach for synthesizing HMF directly from cellulose. Facile formylation of cellulose with green and recyclable formic acid was developed for cellulose formate (CF) production. CF with special net-like structure and high degree of formyl substitution was prepared. The resultant CF exhibited excellent catalytic conversion and selectivity for HMF production comparable to monomeric glucose as reactant in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-H2O media. In our work, we presented molecular dynamics simulations to elaborate the preferential coordination of DMSO around formyl group, which promoted the solvation of formylated substrate in DMSO-H2O mixture, and the HMF yielded could be protected by DMSO without further degradation to levulinic acid or humins.

Abstract:The origin of 5-HMF (5-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde) in a Shengmaiyin decoction was investigated by the RP-HPLC method below. AC 18 column (250 mm×4.6 mm, i.d. 5 μm) with a column temperature of 25°C was used. The mobile phase was a mixture of ultra-pure water-acetonitrile (95∶3, V/V ) and the flow rate was 1.0 ml/min. The detection wavelength was 280 nm. The injection volume was 1 μl and the running time was about 20 min. The addition of Schisandra was regulated to assess the contribution of an acid envrionment to the production of 5-HMF. In order to confirm the role of saccharides in the production of 5-HMF, different amount of fructose was used. The 5-HMF level in decoctions of processed and unprocessed Schisandra was investigated in order to determine the origin of 5-HMF. The results showed that 5-HMF was derived mainly from the decoction of Schisandra only and not the mixed decocition of Ophionpogon and Schisandra . The appearance of 5-HMF is not simply the result of the decomposition of saccharides under the acid environment created by Schisandra , but the processing procedure plays an important role in the production of 5-HMF.

Abstract:Humin formation is one of the key issues that hinders economical 5-HMF production from hexose sugars such as glucose and fructose. In this work, the mechanism of humin formation in glucose/fructose conversion to HMF was studied in an ionic liquid system (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [BMIM]Cl) with CrCl3 as the catalyst. Elemental analysis, XRD, FT-IR, and TEM were applied to study the molecular structure and morphology of the solid humins. The possible intermediates to form solid humins were investigated by HPLC-MS. We synthesized furanic model compounds that mimic the experimentally identified humin intermediates to investigate the mechanism of humin growth at an early stage. The results showed that a furan compound bearing a hydroxymethyl and an electron-donating group was unstable due to three types of reactions: (1) bimolecular ether formation reactions; (2) intermolecular addition reaction; (3) furan ring opening reaction with water. The stability of a furan compound in [BMIM]Cl was increased when the hydroxymethyl group of a furan compound was protected by a methyl group, and the stability was further enhanced with an additional electron-withdrawing group (such as an aldehyde group) on the furan ring. Protecting the hydroxymethyl group of 5-HMF with a methyl group allows easy separation of the products from the [BMIM]Cl solvent through extraction.

Abstract:5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) primary can be synthesized from monosaccharides including glucose and fructose, cost is one of barriers to realize HMF large-scale production. In this study, a high HMF yield of 69.6 mol% was obtained at 180. for 5 min using biomass derived cellulose formate as reactant, which was prepared by formylation of cellulose using recyclable formic acid, and sequentially catalyzed by hydrochloric acid (HCl) and aluminum chloride (AlCl3) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and H2O system. To investigate the effect of cosolvents and formyl groups on the cellulose formate conversion, kinetics analysis and molecular dynamics simulations were conducted. Reaction kinetics study shows that the rate constant of hydrolysis of cellulose formate to glucose increased by almost three times in DMSO-H2O and the reaction rates' constants of glucose, fructose and HMF to humins decreased with the presence of DMSO. Molecular dynamics simulations show that formyl group and DMSO increased its hydrophilicity around the reactive hydroxyl group on the carbon ring and steric hindrance of formyl group affect the distribution of water molecular and DMSO molecular around formylated glucose, resulting in facilitating the formation of a precursor to fructose and inhibiting the formation of humins during formylated glucose conversion. Abstract:Effectively converting renewable biomass resources into valuable chemicals is a very promising and fascinating approach to lower the overreliance on non-renewable fossil resources. Among numerous biomass-derived chemicals, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is particularly attractive and widely thought to be a momentous building block, because it simultaneously contains three reactive groups (including an aldehyde group, a hydroxy group and a furan ring) and can be further transformed into a wide variety of high-value derivatives. For a long time, considerable efforts have always been concentrated on developing high-efficiency catalytic systems for the production of HMF. However, separating HMF from various catalytic systems, which is very significant for its subsequent transformation and application, has not yet received sufficient attention. Meanwhile, to the best of our knowledge, a special and systematic review is still lacking in this research area. To get more insights into the present research status, this review comprehensively summarizes and discusses the latest advancements on various separation methods of HMF, including extraction, distillation, adsorption and filtration, and emphatically analyzes some important evaluation parameters, such as partition coefficient, adsorption capacity, separation selectivity and recovery efficiency, and their influencing factors. Moreover, this review also puts forward a few available and feasible ideas for the future separation of HMF. In brief, the key objective of this review is to raise more concerns about HMF separation and provide the useful theoretical references and technical supports for the more selective and economical separation of HMF.

Abstract:The recognition of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) content in honeys has been the subject of many scientific studies as it is a significant indicator of the toxicity, its processing method, storage situations and age. In this research, the amount of HMF in 95 different flower and honeydew honey samples obtained from markets, factory sales offices and local beekeepers in Turkiye was determined. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method was employed to recognize HMF contents. Before sample analysis, the standard HMF solutions were prepared at different concentrations and method validation studies were carried out. The HMF content limit value of flower and honeydew honey in the Honey Communiqué (TFC/Communiqué No:2020/7) is stated as 40 mg.kg-1. According to the obtained results, the HMF contents in honey samples were found as 0.00-16.65 mg.kg-1. It was determined that the amounts of HMF were at the highest level in monofloral milk vetch honey (MH_MV) samples coded MH_MV3 and MH_MV4. Therefore, it was concluded that all of the honey samples were compatible with the Honey Communiqué in terms of HMF and had appropriate honey quality values.

Abstract:This paper presents the results of testing the content of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in honey from Greater Poland. The production of honey from this area of Poland, its processing, and its consumption are closely related to the sustainable development of this region. It is created in the process of the production, storage, and transport of honey, especially during its thermal processing. Therefore, it can be an indicator in the analysis of sustainable development throughout the life cycle of honey and its products. The aim of this research was to determine the HMF content in Greater Poland's honey available on the Polish market using three different methods and to compare the obtained results. The methodology used was as follows: two spectrophotometric methods (White and Winkler) and an HMF determination method based on the LC-MS/MS technique developed especially for this study. The determined HMF content in all tested honey samples did not exceed the applicable standard. The determined HMF values in all honey samples ranged from 0 to 28.5 mg HMF/kg honey. All results fell within the scope of European Council Directive 2001/110/EC of 20 December 2001, i.e., they did not exceed the HMF content in honey, which is 40 mg/kg. The results will encourage modifications to the universal honey testing procedures to be developed for the agri-food sector. In the study, seven honeys of different origins and types were selected; three HMF detection methods were selected; a comparative procedure was developed; and the content of the reference ingredient in honey was determined.

Abstract:Sugarcane molasses is a by-product in the process of sugar production, which has characteristics of large quantity, low price and easy to pollute the environment. High-valued utilization of sugarcane molasses has important research significance. In this work, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was obtained through hydrolyzing sugarcane molasses, and was separated from the hydrolysate by a designed hyper-cross-linked adsorption resin (HCLR). The optimal conditions for adsorption/desorption of HMF by HCLR were obtained. On this basis, the adsorption kinetics, equilibrium and thermodynamic behavior of HMF onto HCLR were studied, and the adsorption mechanism of HMF onto HCLR was clarified. At last, HMF with a highest purity of 96.0% and an average purity of 93.2% were obtained through fixed bed dynamic adsorption/desorption study. Overall, this work provides a complete process route from sugarcane molasses to high-value product of HMF, and provides theoretical and technical references for the efficient and comprehensive utilization of sugarcane molasses resources.

Abstract:High concentrations of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in honey provide an indication of overheating under inappropriate storage conditions or aging. Conventional methods for determining HMF are cumbersome and require expensive equipment or hazardous reagents. Hence the aim of this study was to propose a new analytical tool for HMF determination in honey, using a low cost acoustic wave sensor. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of honey samples were extracted, using the solid phase microextraction (SPME) technique, and HMF was quantified, using a piezoelectric quartz crystal with gold electrodes coated with a layer of decamolybdodivanado phosphoric acid, sensitive to HMF. The reliability of the proposed method was confirmed after comparing the results of HMF quantification with those obtained by the conventional spectrophotometric White method, and no statistical differences were found (α=0.05).

Abstract:<p>Biomass is the sole renewable organic carbon resource in nature. Conversion of Biomass can produce a series of platform molecules. As an essential multi-purpose bioderived furanic platform compound, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) can be effectively transformed into a variety of value-added derivatives due to its rich chemistry and potential availability, which is an ideal renewable alternative to fossil fuels. This review highlights recent advances in the development of efficient catalytic systems for the conversion of HMF, especially heterogeneous catalysts. Heterogeneous catalysts have advantages in facile separation and recovery, tunable performance by adjusting catalyst structures. Simultaneously, we mainly focus on the application of downstream products in material monomers, pharmaceutical intermediates, and fuels. Furthermore, a few potential research trends are also proposed, in order to provide some useful ideas for the further exploration of the utilization and conversion of HMF in a much simple, efficient, and economical way.</p>

Abstract:As a typical biomass-derived platform compound, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) can be used to synthesize numerous high-quality fuels and high-value chemicals, so it has captured great attention and research interest in recent years. HMF shows excellent application potential and market prospect, but its practical production has not yet been implemented, in which one of the most major bottlenecks should be the lower conversion efficiency of catalytic systems. Therefore, to solve this issue as soon as possible, considerable efforts have been devoted to explore the novel and effective catalytic systems over the past two decades. For a better understanding of current research situation, this review not only systematically summarizes the recent progresses on various homogeneous catalysts (such as organic acids, mineral acids, metal chlorides, metal triflates and ionic liquids), but also comprehensively generalizes the latest achievements on various heterogeneous catalysts (such as acidic resins, acidic zeolites, metal oxides, acidulated metal oxides, metal phosphates, heteropolyacid salts, functionalized silicas, functionalized clays, coordination polymers, carbonaceous acids and magnetic materials) for the conversion of biomass-derived carbohydrates and natural biomass resources into HMF, in which the roles and synergistic effects of different active sites of catalysts in hydrolysis, isomerization and dehydration reactions are emphatically discussed. Moreover, this review particularly outlines and analyzes the catalyst-free systems and autocatalytic mechanisms for the production of HMF, and proposes a few potential research trends in future studies. All in all, this review can provide some valuable enlightenments and feasible ideas for developing high-efficiency catalytic systems and promoting the practical production of HMF.

Abstract:The synthesis of fuels, fuel additives, commercial and potential products from the platform molecules generated by the hydrolysis of the lignocellulosic biomass is a promising strategy toward the utilization of renewable feedstocks. Significant advances have been made on the various transformations (e.g., hydrogenation, oxidation, aldol-condensation, rehydration, amination, polymerization, etherification and decarbonylation) of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). This review firstly gives an overview of these various transformations of HMF to produce a number of fuels as well as chemicals, wherein the fundamental aspects of reaction mechanisms, recent progress and challenges are highlighted, respectively. Different types of catalysts have also been summarized and compared in Tables. One objective is to comment the synthesis of value-added commercial and potential chemical (e.g., furan-based polyester platform 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HMFCA), 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF)). Another purpose of the review is to comment fuels and fuel additives, including gasoline blendstock 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF), ethyl levulinate (EL), gamma-valerlactone (GVL), methylfuran (MF) and so on. These obtained chemicals could replace the products from petrochemical resources, reducing the CO2 emission.

Abstract:Biomass assumes an increasingly vital role in the realm of renewable energy and sustainable development due to its abundant availability, renewability, and minimal environmental impact. Within this context, 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), derived from sugar dehydration, stands out as a critical bio‐derived product. It serves as a pivotal multifunctional platform compound, integral in synthesizing various vital chemicals, including furan‐based polymers, fine chemicals, and biofuels. The high reactivity of HMF, attributed to its highly active aldehyde, hydroxyl, and furan ring, underscores the challenge of selectively regulating its conversion to obtain the desired products. This review highlights the research progress on efficient catalytic systems for HMF synthesis, oxidation, reduction, and etherification. Additionally, it outlines the techno‐economic analysis (TEA) and prospective research directions for the production of furan‐based chemicals. Despite significant progress in catalysis research, and certain process routes demonstrating substantial economics, with key indicators surpassing petroleum‐based products, a gap persists between fundamental research and large‐scale industrialization. This is due to the lack of comprehensive engineering research on bio‐based chemicals, making the commercialization process a distant goal.
