Abstract:The part about the clan migration and populations in Liuyang Xiang Tu Zhi ·Shi Zu Zhi,whose quality is superior to cotemporaneous local records though it is not as good as clan records in a batch of county annals of Hunan province,and which is good material researching the history of the great migration of Hongwu. The migrant narration based on folk literature divides China into several different zones of migration with different original domicile. The multi-source of southern migra-tion and the singularity of northern migration contrast sharply. The strategy which different regional populations seek common ancestor source is a conscious or unconscious action,isn't related to modernity.

Abstract:In this short note,the author talks continually about the same topic of his earlier article which is about many rivers or cities named Hutuo.The famous historian,Sima qian,recorded a great event in Shiji that the last Zhongshan King was banished by Zhao Huiwen King to Fushi.In the past,all scholars believed that this Fushi was located in Yulin,Shaanxi Province,in the modern map of China.However,this note supplies new evidences from archaeological and paleographical resources to indicate that the idea above was absolutely wrong.The truth is that this Fushi mentioned in Shiji is not a Qin city but a Zhao city,which was located in Wutai,Shanxi Province and named Lvshi in the Han Dynasty,and like Fushi,it was also derived from Hutuo River.This old city is just located in the upper valley of the Hutuo River,not too far from Lingshou City,the capital of Zhongshan Kingdom.

Abstract:Pinglujun was an army deeply hulized. After the rebellion of Anlushan,the part of the Pinglujun which still kept fealty to the Tang dynasty broke into two parts: the Hulized knight clique and the Kogoryo knight clique. They brought the culture of Hu into the central China when they came into this area. So the area of Huaixi took on a serious tendency of Huhua. But the tendency of Huhua was different between Huaixi and Ziqing. When the tendency of Huhua in Huaixi became more and more serious, the tendency of Huhua in Ziqing was becoming lighter and lighter.

Abstract:Place names refract historical memories of regional communities. They not only function as makers of places, but also contain implicit references to groups of people, business or commerce, conflicts between families, folk beliefs, as well as national policies. By tracing back to the changes of place names in history, we can disclose the social and geographical backdrop of a place and observe the choices of historical memories by different groups of people. By drawing on folk literature in Huizhou, this paper presents an initial exploration of the social and geographical backdrop for changes of place names in history, so as to reveal the elegant features of place names in Huizhou and the social and cultural implications hidden behind the elegant names of places.

Abstract:Today I would like to share something about shrinking cities, literally the cities that are depopulating. Besides my identity as an urban scholar, I am an outdoor enthusiast. As you know, there are three parallel rivers in China, Jinsha River, Lancang River, and Nu River, respectively. Once I took a 3-day trip to venture across the Biluo Snow Mountain from Nu River to Lancang River, including spending two nights in tents. Before that time, Nu River has been reported as the only canyon without hydroelectric development in China. During the adventure, I passed by an area named as Zhiziluo, before arriving at the ultimate destination. It is nearly one kilometer beyond Nu River Canyon in height. You can imagine, it is one kilometer vertically but not horizontally there. From my own perspective, Zhiziluo City seemed to be very weird for its being abandoned.Why it was abandoned? It was about 40 years ago, some experts predicted that geological disasters would go to take place there, such as mud-rock flow. While the locals believed with this point deeply and scattered in short order, leaving an abandoned and vacant city behind. Actually, I strongly recommend Zhiziluo and Nu River Canyon as destinations for winter vacation. Though it is hard and tedious to get there: first flying to Kunming, then taking a one-night train to Liuku, besides that, taking a shuttle bus to Zhiziluo, after that, arriving in Bingzhongluo and finally reaching Biluo Snow Mountain.

Abstract:Abstract Originating in the experience of geographical dispersion and survival, the concept of diaspora (lisan 離散) can be extended to diaspora consciousness (lisan yishi 離散意識) and its correlate, return consciousness (huigui yishi 回歸意識). The famous group of Tang and Song intellectuals who were forced to leave hometown political/cultural centers and dream, perennially, of return constitutes the early Chinese embodiment of diaspora-return consciousness. For many “hometown” (guxiang 故鄉) came to mean not just their homeland but their ideal destination or spiritual home, as in Su Shi's 蘇軾 (1037–1101) “wherever my heart is at peace is my home.” The layered features of this diaspora-return (lisan-huigui 離散—回歸) consciousness led to a unique literary style and the development of tropes that would shape Chinese writing for a millennium. Political banishment yielded an unintended yet undeniable cultural value.
Chang’an and Dunhuang in the High Tang: A Study on the Certificate Dated to 741 A.D.in the Russian Collections

Abstract:This article uncovers the Buddhist cultural relations between Chang’an and Dunhuang in the High Tang Era through the study of a Dunhuang document preserved in the Russian Collections. The Da Anguo Si (Great Anguo Monastery) was once the residence of Prince Anguo Xiangwang (later Ruizong Emperor), who gave up the purple to his son Xunzong in 712 A.D. During the Kaiyuan Era (713-741), The Great Anguo Monastery accommodated every kind of Buddhist scholars and thus became one of the most important royal monasteries. This certificate shows that Daojian, a monk from the Great Anguo Monastery, was authorized to preside over the ritual held in Shazhou (Dunhuang) in 741. At the same time, he preached the imperial commentary on the Diamond Sutra, and the Lotus Sutra as well as the Fanwangjing (Brahmajāla-sūtra). This indicates that a culture bridge was set up between Chang’an and Dunhuang, through which the newly published sutra, paintings, and articles could transported to the border city.

Abstract:Chen Xunzhai was a famous Fujian traditional Chinese medicine expert in the period of the Republic of China. There are different records of his native place in the existing literature. By reviewing the published journals and books, interviewing Chen Xunzhai's scattered works and genealogy and visiting his descendants, this article conducted investigations and researches and confirmed that Chen Xunzhai, also named Guangcheng, was born in Shangyang Village, Gaopo Town in Yongding County of Fujian Province. He was the 22nd generation of descendants of Chen family in Shangyang Yingchuan County, not the descendant of the Chen family in Jiang Tian Nanyang of Chang Le City. Neither was he the seventh-generation grandson of Chen Xiuyuan. The findings of this paper will lay the foundation for the further researches on Chen Xunzhai.

Abstract:In 176 B C the Greater Yuezhi People migrated westward,causing the kingdoms in the Western Region located north and south of Tienshan Mountains to redistribute The Saka People moved southward,the Wusun People westward,and the Xiongnu moved from the Mongolian Plateau to the homeland of Greater Yuezhi People such as the areas of Barkol steppe and Turfan Basin In 108 B C ,the Lesser Yuezhi People surrendered to the Han Empire,moving eastward from Turfan to Jiuquan,creating a massive ethnic migration in Central Asia During the struggle for the Western Region between the Han Empire and the Xiongnu,the Jushi People moved from western Lop Nor to the homeland of Lesser Yuezhi People in the Turfan Basin,which was later divided into "the Front and Back Kingdoms of Jushi as well as six kingdoms north of Tienshan Mountains" Meanwhile,the Loulan People migrated southward to Shanshan River (modern Cherchen River),where the Jushi People renamed as "Shanshan" When the Xiongnu defeated the Greater Yuezhi People in 176 B C ,there were only 26 states in the Western Region After the Jushi People moved north from Lop Nor to the Turfan Basin in 108 B C ,they integrated with the Lesser Yuezhi People,creating "the Front and Back Kingdoms of Jushi as well as the six kingdoms north of Tienshan Mountains" The Chinese historian Ban Gu documented this change in his The Han Annals,noting that the Western Regions developed into 36 kingdoms,and later increased to 55

Abstract:One of the places that plays a role in a number of myths and legends that survive from ancient China is the place called K'ung-sang , Hollow Mulberry. Confucius is said to have been born in a place called K'ung-sang, and Yi Yin, the man who served as chief minister to T'ang, founder of the Shang or Yin dynasty (traditional reign dates, 1766–1753 b.c.) was born in an actual hollow mulberry tree. By force of the Confucius connexion, commentaries often identify K'ung-sang as a place in the state of Lu, if not precisely Ch'ü-fu, the home town of Confucius. But K'ung-sang is located and identified in a number of ways in early texts: it is a mountain in the North or the East; it is a place that is being attacked by a demon; it is the capital of various Ti (emperors or gods); and in one source at least, it is the name of a musical instrument, a zither ( se ).

Abstract:Owning to the special location of Shanghai, almost every large population migration throughout the history of China left traces in Shanghai. We collected data of Shanghai from 13 populations which have obvious differences in terms of dialects. The cluster analysis on the data showed that the populations to the east of Huangpu River are relatively pure while the populations to the west of Huangpu River are relatively mingled. Both the populations can be further clustered to a third one. This suggests that the populations in Shanghai suburb may have 3 sources. (Most of the inhabitants of Jinhui town in west Fengxian County and the Maqiao town of Minhang area are natives of South China. The inhabitants of Chongming County, Jiading area Pudong area and Nanhui County are the immigrants from North China, those of Touqiao town in Fengxian County, Jinshan area,Zhujiajiao and Shangta of Qingpu area, Tianmashan of Songjiang area are the immigrates from the west.) These conclusions are generally consistent to the historical record, except for some minor deviations.

Abstract:In periods before the Tang Dynasty, the institutional status of Xuancheng has experienced a process from dis-trict hub to prefecture capital and from administrative center of western Jiangnan to political hinterland and economic fertile land of the whole Jiangnan area. Several key points of the developing process were included the settlement of Yuanling district by the Chu Kingdom, the establishment of Danyang prefecture during the Western Han Dynasty, the movement of Danyang prefecture capital from Xuancheng to Jianye during the Wu period, the re-construction of Xuancheng prefecture from the sepa-ration of former Danyang during the Western Jin Dynasty, and the development of Xuancheng as a significant place that was close to the capital and renowned for its splendid culture in the Six Dynasties. Xuancheng became the capital of landscape po-ems, a literature genre that is well-known for Xie Tiao’ s master pieces and has important position in the history of Chinese literature.

Abstract:The 1930s was an important turning point in the history of China's development, and the turbulence of the times also affected the spiritual world of intellectuals. Amidst the literary world of different schools of thought, Shen Congwen, with his unique identity, constructed a world of Western Hunan blending local customs and cultural atmosphere. In the 1930s, Shen Congwen, on the one hand, held fast to his self-identity as a countryman by virtue of his bloodline rooted in the countryside, and on the other hand, his life experience of moving from the countryside to the city enabled him to gain the identity of a "marginal man" in the society. While hovering between the urban and rural areas ,this led Shen to create a lot of far-reaching, complex and diversified characters in the western Hunan world. This process also reveals the impact of the formation of the Dual urban-rural structure on the author.

Abstract:Chu people originally resided in Dan River region.After affiliating with Zhou during the beginning of Western Zhou,they moved to Zongzhou.Thus the place Jingzong where Yuxiong lived in refers to Zongzhou where Capital Hao of Western Zhou was located.During the time of King Cheng of Zhou,Xiongyi was effeofed to the land of Yitun located in the north of Dan River,as awards on his ancestors' contribution to Zhou.This event marked the establishment of Chu State.After that,Chu people moved eastward along Han River,and in the end of Western Zhou Xiongyi dwelled in Ruo,a place where Dan River and Xi River converges,.In early Spring and Autumn period,Chu people moved to the Yicheng Plain,where they established their new capital Ying,and developed rapidly in Jianghan Region during Eastern Zhou period.Accordingly,the developing route of Guofenglou Culture was similar to the movement of Chu's ancestors recorded in Chapter Chuju.

Abstract:As a warlord recorded in official annals in the sixth century Cheng Ling-xi was worshiped posthumously in a simple pattern in Huangdun village of Huizhou where he was born. Until the middle age of the Southern Song Dynasty the worshiping became official and solemn with the building of Shizhong (Eternal Loyalty)Temple sponsored by the new rising local literati. This custom spread in the Yuan times accompanied with the growth of literati groups. Shizhong Xingci(sub-temples) were built in many areas in Huizhou and a new god Cheng Yuan-tan emerged in the temples as a cultural symbol to imply the ancestors of Cheng Ling-xi coming from the morecivilizedNorth China. The mid-Ming times witnessed the revival of worshiping Cheng Ling-xi because of the sprouting of commerce in Huizhou and the merchants were pivot roles. Now that constructing conglomerated lineage was a part of the commercial trend the merchants who had the surname of Cheng commenced to alter Shizhong Xingci to be Cheng's ancestral halls and Cheng Ling-xi became hereby their common glorious ancestor.
