Abstract:In a work by Berta et al. [Phys. Rev. A 90, 062127 (2014)], uncertainty relations in the presence of quantum memory were formulated for mutually unbiased bases using conditional collision entropy. In this paper, we generalize their results to the mutually unbiased measurements. Our primary result is an equality between the amount of uncertainty for a set of measurements and the amount of entanglement of the measured state, both of which are quantified by the conditional collision entropy. Implications of this equality relation are discussed. We further show that similar equality relations can be obtained for generalized symmetric informationally complete measurements. We also derive an interesting equality for arbitrary orthogonal basis of the space of Hermitian, traceless operators.

Abstract:The current study aims to examine uncertainty relations for measurements from generalized equiangular tight frames. Informationally overcomplete measurements are a valuable tool in quantum information processing, including tomography and state estimation. The maximal sets of mutually unbiased bases are the most common case of such measurements. The existence of $d+1$ mutually unbiased bases is proved for $d$ being a prime power. More general classes of informationally overcomplete measurements have been proposed for various purposes. Measurements of interest are typically characterized by some inner structure maintaining the required properties. It leads to restrictions imposed on generated probabilities. To apply the considered measurements, these restrictions should be converted into information-theoretic terms. It is interesting that certain restrictions hold irrespectively to overcompleteness. To describe the amount of uncertainty quantitatively, we use the Tsallis and Rényi entropies as well as probabilities of separate outcomes. The obtained results are based on estimation of the index of coincidence. The derived relations are briefly exemplified.

Abstract:We construct inequalities between Renyi alpha-entropy and the indexes of coincidence of probability distributions, based on which we obtain improved state-dependent entropic uncertainty relations for general symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measures (SIC-POVMs) and mutually unbiased measurements (MUMs). We show that our uncertainty relations for general SIC-POVMs and MUMs can be tight for sufficiently mixed states, and, moreover, comparisons to the numerically optimal results are made via information diagrams.

Abstract:We reformulate the notion of uncertainty of pairs of unitary operators within the context of guessing games and derive an entropic uncertainty relation for a pair of such operators. We show how distinguishable operators are compatible while maximal incompatibility of unitary operators can be connected to bases for some subspace of operators which are mutually unbiased.

Optimized Entropic Uncertainty Relations for Multiple Measurements

Abstract:Recently, an entropic uncertainty relation for multiple measurements has been proposed by Liu et al. in [Phys. Rev. A 91, 042133 (2015)]. However, the lower bound of the relation is not always tight with respect to different measurements. Herein, we improve the lower bound of the entropic uncertainty relation for multiple measurements, termed as simply constructed bound (SCB). We verify that the SCB is tighter than Liu et al.'s result for arbitrary mutually unbiased basis measurements, which might play a fundamental and crucial role in practical quantum information processing. Moreover, we optimize the SCB by considering mutual information and the Holevo quantity, and propose an optimized SCB (OSCB). Notably, the proposed bounds are extrapolations of the behavior of two measurements to a larger collection of measurements. It is believed that our findings would shed light on entropy-based uncertainty relations in the multiple measurement scenario and will be beneficial for security analysis in quantum key distributions.

Abstract:Given two orthornormal bases A and B, the basic form of the entropic uncertainty principle is stated in terms of the sum of the Shannon entropies of the probabilities of measuring A and B onto a given quantum state. State independent lower bounds for this sum encapsulate the degree of incompatibility of the observables diagonal in the A and B bases, and are usually derived by extracting as much information as possible from the unitary operator U connecting the two bases. Here we show a strategy to derive sequences of lower bounds based on alternating sequences of measurements onto A and B. The problem can be mapped into the multiple application of bistochastic processes that can be described by the powers of the unistochastic matrices directly derivable from U. By means of several examples we study the applicability of the method. The results obtained show that the strategy can allow for an advantage both in the pure state and in the mixed state scenario. The sequence of lower bounds is obtained with resources which are polynomial in the dimension of the underlying Hilbert space, and it is thus suitable for studying high dimensional cases.

Abstract:We derive an entropic uncertainty relation for generalized positive-operator-valued measure (POVM) measurements via a direct-sum majorization relation using Schur concavity of entropic quantities in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space. Our approach provides a significant improvement of the uncertainty bound compared with previous majorization-based approaches [S. Friendland, V. Gheorghiu and G. Gour, Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 230401 (2013); A. E. Rastegin and K. Życzkowski, J. Phys. A, 49, 355301 (2016)], particularly by extending the direct-sum majorization relation first introduced in [Ł. Rudnicki, Z. Puchała and K. Życzkowski, Phys. Rev. A 89, 052115 (2014)]. We illustrate the usefulness of our uncertainty relations by considering a pair of qubit observables in a two-dimensional system and randomly chosen unsharp observables in a three-dimensional system. We also demonstrate that our bound tends to be stronger than the generalized Maassen--Uffink bound with an increase in the unsharpness effect. Furthermore, we extend our approach to the case of multiple POVM measurements, thus making it possible to establish entropic uncertainty relations involving more than two observables.

Abstract:The entropic uncertainty principle in the form proven by Maassen and Uffink yields a fundamental inequality that is prominently used in many places all over the field of quantum information theory. In this work, we provide a family of versatile generalizations of this relation. Our proof methods build on a deep connection between entropic uncertainties and interpolation inequalities for the doubly stochastic map that links probability distributions in two measurements bases. In contrast to the original relation, our generalization also incorporates the von Neumann entropy of the underlying quantum state. These results can be directly used to bound the extractable randomness of a source independent QRNG in the presence of fully quantum attacks, to certify entanglement between trusted parties, or to bound the entanglement of a system with an untrusted environment.

Abstract:The entropic way of formulating Heisenberg's uncertainty principle not only plays a fundamental role in applications of quantum information theory but also is essential for manifesting genuine nonclassical features of quantum systems. In this paper we investigate Rényi entropic uncertainty relations (EURs) in the scenario where measurements on individual copies of a quantum system are selected with nonuniform probabilities. In contrast with EURs that characterize an observer's overall lack of information about outcomes with respect to a collection of measurements, we establish state-dependent lower bounds on the weighted sum of entropies over multiple measurements. Conventional EURs thus correspond to the special cases when all weights are equal, and in such cases, we show our results are generally stronger than previous ones. Moreover, taking the entropic steering criterion as an example, we numerically verify that our EURs could be advantageous in practical quantum tasks by optimizing the weights assigned to different measurements. Importantly, this optimization does not require quantum resources and is efficiently computable on classical computers.

Abstract:: In this study, some new entropic inequalities on sparse representation for pairs of bases are investigated. First, the generalised Shannon entropic uncertainty principle and the generalised Rényi entropic uncertainty principle via new derived Hausdorff – Young inequality are proved. These new derived uncertainty principles show that signals cannot have unlimited concentration related to minimum entropies in pairs of bases. Second, the conditions of uniqueness of sparse representation under minimum entropies are given. This study also demonstrates that the entropic greedy-like algorithms can achieve the ‘ sparsest ’ representation for minimum entropies approximately. Third, the relations between the minimum l 0 solution and minimum entropy are discussed as well. It shows that even if the sparsest representation of l 0 -norm is obtained, the entropy cannot always be the minimum and it is possible that the entropy is limited to a interval. These new derived inequalities will be primarily to contribute to a better understanding of sparse representation in the sense of limited entropic uncertainty bounds. Finally, the experiments are shown to verify the authors ’ ideas.

Abstract:We generalize the concept of mutually unbiased bases (MUB) to measurements which are not necessarily described by rank one projectors. As such, these measurements can be a useful tool to study the long standing problem of the existence of MUB. We derive their general form, and show that in a finite, $d$-dimensional Hilbert space, one can construct a complete set of $d+1$ mutually unbiased measurements. Beside of their intrinsic link to MUB, we show, that these measurements' statistics provide complete information about the state of the system. Moreover, they capture the physical essence of unbiasedness, and in particular, they satisfy non-trivial entropic uncertainty relation similar to $d+1$ MUB.

Abstract:In this paper, we study entropic uncertainty relations on a finite-dimensional Hilbert space and provide several tighter bounds for multi-measurements, with some of them also valid for Rényi and Tsallis entropies besides the Shannon entropy. We employ majorization theory and actions of the symmetric group to obtain an {\it admixture bound} for entropic uncertainty relations for multi-measurements. Comparisons among all bounds for multi-measurements are shown in figures in our favor.

Abstract:We investigate the uncertainty principle for two successive projective measurements in terms of Rényi entropy based on a single quantum system. Our results cover a large family of the entropy (including the Shannon entropy) uncertainty relations with a lower optimal bound. We compare our relation with other formulations of the uncertainty principle in two-spin observables measured on a pure quantum state of qubit. It is shown that the low bound of our uncertainty relation has better tightness.

Abstract:Quantum measurements based on mutually unbiased bases (MUB) play crucial roles in foundational studies and quantum information processing. It is known that there exist inequivalent MUB, but little is known about their operational distinctions, not to say experimental demonstration. In this work, by virtue of a simple estimation problem we experimentally demonstrate the operational distinctions between inequivalent triples of MUB in dimension 4 based on high-precision photonic systems. The experimental estimation fidelities coincide well with the theoretical predictions with only 0.16$\%$ average deviation, which is 25 times less than the difference (4.1$\%$) between the maximum estimation fidelity and the minimum estimation fidelity. Our experiments clearly demonstrate that inequivalent MUB have different information extraction capabilities and different merits for quantum information processing.

Abstract:We provide several bounds on the maximum size of MU k-Schmidt bases in $$\mathbb {C}^{d}\otimes \mathbb {C}^{d'}$$. We first give some upper bounds on the maximum size of MU k-Schmidt bases in $$\mathbb {C}^{d}\otimes \mathbb {C}^{d'}$$ by conversation law. Then we construct two maximally entangled mutually unbiased (MU) bases in the space $$\mathbb {C}^{2}\otimes \mathbb {C}^{3}$$, which is the first example of maximally entangled MU bases in $$\mathbb {C}^d\otimes \mathbb {C}^{d'}$$ when $$d\not \mid d'$$. By applying a general recursive construction to this example, we are able to obtain two maximally entangled MU bases in $$\mathbb {C}^{d}\otimes \mathbb {C}^{d'}$$ for infinitely many $$d,d'$$ such that d is not a divisor of $$d'$$. We also give some applications of the two maximally entangled MU bases in $$\mathbb {C}^{2}\otimes \mathbb {C}^{3}$$. Further, we present an efficient method of constructing MU k-Schmidt bases. It solves an open problem proposed in [Y. F. Han et al., Quantum Inf. Process. 17, 58 (2018)]. Our work improves all previous results on maximally entangled MU bases.

Abstract:We discuss quantitatively the complementarity of information transmitted by a quantum system prepared in a basis state in one out of several different mutually unbiased bases (MUBs). We obtain upper bounds on the information available to a receiver who has no knowledge of which MUB was chosen by the sender. These upper bounds imply a complementarity of information encoded via different MUBs and ultimately ensure the security in quantum key distribution protocols.

Abstract:The uncertainty relation is regarded as a remarkable feature of quantum mechanics differing from the classical counterpart, and it plays a backbone role in the region of quantum information theory. In principle, the uncertainty relation offers a nontrivial limit to predict the outcome of arbitrarily incompatible observed variables. Therefore, to pursue a more general uncertainty relations ought to be considerably important for obtaining accurate predictions of multi-observable measurement results in genuine multipartite systems. In this article, we derive a generalized entropic uncertainty relation (EUR) for multi-measurement in a multipartite framework. It is proved that the bound we proposed is stronger than the one derived from Renes et al. in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103,020402(2009) ] for the arbitrary multipartite case. As an illustration, we take several typical scenarios that confirm that our proposed bound outperforms that presented by Renes et al. Hence, we believe our findings provide generalized uncertainty relations with regard to multi-measurement setting, and facilitate the EUR's applications on quantum precision measurement regarding genuine multipartite systems.

Abstract:As a very fundamental principle in quantum physics, uncertainty principle has been studied intensively via various uncertainty inequalities. A natural and fundamental question is whether an equality exists for the uncertainty principle. Here we derive an entropic uncertainty equality relation for a bipartite system consisting of a quantum system and a coupled quantum memory, based on the information measure introduced by Brukner and Zeilinger (Phys. Rev. Lett. 83:3354, 1999). The equality indicates that the sum of measurement uncertainties over a complete set of mutually unbiased bases on a subsystem is equal to a total, fixed uncertainty determined by the initial bipartite state. For the special case where the system and the memory are the maximally entangled, all of the uncertainties related to each mutually unbiased base measurement are zero, which is substantially different from the uncertainty inequality relation. The results are meaningful for fundamental reasons and give rise to operational applications such as in quantum random number generation and quantum guessing games. Moreover, we experimentally verify the measurement uncertainty relation in the presence of quantum memory on a five-qubit spin system by directly measuring the corresponding quantum mechanical observables, rather than quantum state tomography in all the previous experiments of testing entropic uncertainty relations.

Abstract:We study entropic uncertainty relations by using stepwise linear functions and quadratic functions. Two kinds of improved uncertainty lower bounds are constructed: the state-independent one based on the lower bound of Shannon entropy and the tighter state-dependent one based on the majorization techniques. The analytical results for qubit and qutrit systems with two or three measurement settings are explicitly derived, with detailed examples showing that they outperform the existing bounds. The case with the presence of quantum memory is also investigated.
