Abstract:The wave equations of light in photonic crystal obtained by Maxwell's equations are similar to the Shcrodinger equations for electrons in periodic potential.Therefore,there exists a photonic band-gap structure in photonic crystal,which can be studied by using energy band theory of solid.

Abstract:AbstrcatThe calculation of band structure and analysis of light propagation in photonic crystals are basic and important issues. The plane wave expansion method to calculate band structure and the Floquet-Bloch theory to analyze light propagation in periodic dielectric materials are discussed emphatically. The electromagnetic waves in photonic crystals can be expressed as a series of spacial harmonics. The propagation direction of light in photonic crystals is consistent with wave energy or group velocity. The behavior of light can be analyzed qualitatively by using wave vector diagram.

Abstract:The 1-dimension photonic crystal is descripted by using acoustic technique.MaxwellI equation is reduced to Schrodinger equation if assuming free damping,free current,free magnetism and homogeneity for material,but Schrodinger equation is further reduced to Mathieu equation if deflected index is cosine form.It shows that there are a series of stable zones and unstable zones(stop band)in the plane of parameter δ and e.When,these unstable zones will be reduced to some points in the centre of the stop-bands.The stop-bands widths are obtained by the perturbation techniques.The result shows that the widths of the first order and second order unstable zones depend on the parameters of dielectric and photonic frequency.Only suitable regulating these parameters,the band-structure can be regulated,thus the photonic crystal with a variable properties can be obtained.

Abstract:Partity-time symmetry enables a quantum system or an optical/electromagnetic structure to have real eigenvalue spectra of energy (or wave number). A relatively simple and convenient scenario, which takes advantage of multi-level transition and optical pumping in a four-level atomic system, is suggested in order to achieve parity-time symmetry of such an atomic medium. In the present parity-time symmetric atomic vapor, the real part of the obtained electric permittivity is a constant, and the imaginary part is an odd function (e.g., sine function of spatial coordinate). The optical characteristics of such a parity-time symmetric periodic dielectric have also been studied in this paper. It can be found that the Bloch wave numbers in the present periodic dielectric are purely real or purely imaginary. A threshold in the magnitude of the imaginary part of the parity-time symmetric permittivity for emergence of forbidden band is also indicated in our numerical calculation. The present scenario for realizing parity-time symmetric atomic vapor would find potential applications in some new photonic or quantum optical device design and fabrication.

Abstract:A novel eigenvalue method is proposed to calculate the band structure of lossy and dispersive photonic crystal (PC). Using an idea from quantum transport problem, a standard linear eigenvalue equation rather than a nonlinear eigenvalue equation is obtained by a rigorous and artful transformation. And the physical parameters of lossy and dispersive PC are obtained by solving the linear eigenvalue equation using finite-difference frequency-domain (FDFD) method. Compared with other methods, the proposed method has great features, such as clear concept, simple calculation, less computing time and storage. A dielectric PC is simulated by the proposed method, and the results accord well with those from the traditional FDFD method, which verifies the validity of the proposed method. Moreover, the dispersion relation of the lossy and dispersive PC is calculated by the proposed method, and the surface plasmon frequency is obtained. Furthermore, the influence of loss on the dispersion relation and eigenmode field distribution is studied. The results provide some theoretical guidance for studying the lossy and dispersive PC.

Abstract:Properties of photonic band gap and light propagation in one-dimensional multicomponent photonic crystal have been studied with the optical transfer matrix method. We mainly analyze the relation of photonic band-gap property with the arrangement of components, the refractive index and the geometrical thickness. In this study, the methods to change the width and the location of the existing photonic band-gaps in multicomponent photonic crystal are proposed.

Abstract:Photonic crystals are artificially created materials with periodic dielectric constant variations. The simplest one-dimensional photonic crystals are multilayer structures obtained by alternately growing thin-films with different dielectric constants by molecular beam epitaxy. When the dielectric constant of one-dimensional photonic crystal is a sine-squared function in coordinate space, the photonic motion equation is reduced to Mathieu equation.The band construction for this system is discussed based on Bloch theorem,and the system presented automatically band properties.It shows that there are a series of stable zones and unstable zones (forbidden-bands) in the plane of parameter δ and e. When e→0, these unstable zones will be reduced to some points in the centre of the forbidden-bands. The unstable zone and the forbidden-band width are found by the perturbation techniques.The result shows that the widths of the first order and second order unstable zones depend on the parameters of dielectric and photonic frequency. By adjusting these parameters, one can obtain the photonic crystals with different band structures and properties.

Abstract:A novel method is developed in this paper to characterize the band diagram and band modal fields of gyromagnetic photonic crystals that support topological one-way edge states. The proposed method is based on an integral equation formulation that utilizes the broadband Green’s function (BBGF). The BBGF is a hybrid representation of the periodic lattice Green’s function with imaginary extractions that has accelerated convergence and is suitable for broadband evaluations. The effects of the tensor permeability of the gyromagnetic scatterers are incorporated in a new formulation of surface integral equations (SIEs) with BBGF as the kernel that can be solved by the method of moments. The results are compared against Comsol simulations for various cases to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method. Simulations results are illustrated and discussed for the modes of topological photonic crystals in relation to the physics of degeneracy, applied magnetic fields, and bandgaps.

Abstract:Periodically modulated quantum crystals and their photonic analogs???also known as Floquet crystals (FCs)??? are characterized by continuous quasienergy bands separated from each other by spectral gaps. Meanwhile, a separate class of periodically driven systems???the so-called time crystals (TCs)???have an entirely different band structure characterized by gaps in their Bloch momenta. The reasons for such starkly different properties of the FCs and TCs are uncovered and time-averaged perturbation theory is used to derive the criteria for band gaps opening in quasienergy, Bloch momentum, or both. Examples from electrodynamics and from a Su-SchriefferHeeger lattice model illustrate the emergence of non-Hermiticity, exceptional points, and amplified edge states in periodically driven systems.

Abstract:We simulate the changes of the photonic band structure of the crystal in two dimensions with a quasi-fractal structure when it is lined to a fractal. The result shows that when the dielectric distribution is lined, the photonic band structure will be compressed on the whole and the ground photonic band gap (PBG) closed while the next PBGs shrunk, in conjunction with their position declining in the frequency spectrum. Furthermore, the PBGs in the high zone are much more sensitive than those in low zones.

Abstract:The photonic properties of a two-dimensional complex photonic crystal (PC) of square lattice were calculated by finite different time domain (FDTD) method. The photonic band structure, photonic density of states, the transmission and reflection coefficients along ГX direction were obtained. The results indicate a clear correspondence between the photonic band structure and the transmission spectra along ГX direction. The photonic band structure was also shown by the photonic density of states. Furthermore, the theoretical explanation for the opening of the band gap was given.

Abstract:We solve analytically the multiple-scattering equations for two-dimensional photonic crystals in the long-wavelength limit. Different approximations of the electric and magnetic susceptibilities are presented from a unified pseudopotential point of view. The nature of the so-called plasmon-polariton bands is clarified. Its frequency as a function of the wire radius is discussed. The corresponding tunable "magnetic surface plasmon" band is pointed out.

Abstract:Photonic crystal materials(PCs) are the new research fields of materials in the recent years.Because of its features of photonic localization and photonic band gap(PBG),the photonic crystals changed traditional physical processes in it,and some new features and phenomena occur.The energy transfer in the photonic crystals is also affected.Through the research of energy transfer in PCs,a theory basis of this process will be established to guide the preparation experiments of luminous materials based on the PCs.In this paper,a kind of semi-classical theory was proposed based on the theory of photonic crystals and energy transfer in solid state to explain and analyze the process of energy transfer in 1-D PBG.A method to solve the similar problems was also generalized.We found out that the resonance dipole-dipole interaction(RDDI) plays a major role in the energy transfer.Effects of the photonic band gap modulation are reflected on the dispersion relation.So the dispersion relation can be introduced into the calculation of transition matrix.The related factors and mechanisms of the discussion about the energy transfer in PCs are concluded,finaly.

Abstract:Photonic crystals are periodic structures which prevent light propagation along one or more directions in certain frequency intervals. Their band spectrum is usually analyzed using Floquet-Bloch decomposition. This spectrum is located on the real axis, and it enters the complex plane when absorption and dispersion is considered in the dielectric permittivity of material constituents. Here, we review fundamental definition and properties of dispersion law and group velocity in photonic crystals and we illustrate them with numerical examples.

Abstract:An analytical three-dimensional (3D) coupled-wave theory (CWT) for the finite-size photonic crystal slabs (PhCs) has been presented to depict the discretized modes at band-edges residing inside and outside the continuum. Specifically, we derive the CWT equations of slow-varying envelop function of dominant Bloch waves. By combining the trial solutions that are composed of a basis of bulk states with appropriate boundary conditions (B.C.), we analytically solve the equations and discuss the far-field patterns, asymptotic behavior and flatband effect of the finite-size modes, respectively. The proposed method presents a clear picture in physics for the origins of finite-size modes and provides an efficient and comprehensive tool for designing and optimizing PhC devices such as PCSELs.

Abstract:The decay and radiation of an atom in a photonic crystal with an incomplete gap was investigated. If the transition frequency is close to a band edge, the Weisskopf-Wigner approximation is not applicable and the decay is nonexponential. The decay could be greatly enhanced or decreased by the self-emitted field.

Abstract:By employing 2D plane wave expansion (PWE) and finite difference time domain (FDTD) methods, a photonic crystal waveguide (PCW) based on the compound square lattice structure is presented. Band-gap can be observed for TM polarization and compared with the simple lattice structure based on the same material, the band-gap is increased by 62.7%. By optimizing the parameters we get the PCW with the propagation only near the wavelength of 1.55 µm and a flat group index curve in a wide wavelength range of 40 nm. And the group velocity dispersion compensation can be realized by the structure optimization. The results provide a reference for the study and application of photonic crystal waveguide based on the compound lattice structure.

Abstract:A pseudospectral time-domain (PSTD) method is developed for calculating the band structure of a two-dimensional photonic crystal. Maxwell's equations are rewritten in terms of period fields by using the Bloch theorem. Instead of spatial finite differences, the fast Fourier transform is used to calculate the spatial derivatives. To reach a similar accuracy, fewer sample points are required in the present PSTD method as compared to the conventional finite-difference time-domain methods. Our numerical simulation shows that the present PSTD method is an efficient and accurate method for calculating the band structure of a photonic crystal.

Abstract:A two-dimensional photonic crystal model with a periodic square dielectric background is proposed. The photonic band modulation effects due to the two-dimensional periodic background are investigated in detail. It is found that periodic modulation of the dielectric background greatly alters photonic band structures, especially for the E-polarization modes. The number, width and position of the photonic band gaps sensitively depend on the dielectric constants of the two-dimensional periodic background. Complete band gaps are found, and the dependence of the widths of these gaps on the structural and material parameters of the two alternating rods/holes is studied.

Abstract:A complex hexagonal lattice photonic crystal with a two-dimensional (21)) periodic dielectric background is proposed. The photonic band modulation effects due to the 2D periodic dielectric background are investigated. We find that the position and width of the complete photonic band gap (PBG) sensitively depend on the dielectric constants of the 2D periodic dielectric background. The radii of the two alternating air holes have significant influence on the relative width of the complete PBG.
