Abstract:On the basis of the similarity theory of the atmospheric surface layer and the mass conservation principle, a new scheme using a variational method is developed to estimate the surface momentum and sensible and latent heat fluxes. In this scheme, the mass conservation is introduced into the cost function as a weak physical constraint, which leads to an overdetermined system. For the variational method with mass conservation constraint, only the conventional meteorological observational data are taken into account. Data collected in the Yellow River Source Region Climate and Environment Observation and Research Station at Maqu, China, during 11-25 August 2010 are used to test this new scheme. Results indicate that this scheme is more reliable and accurate than both the flux-profile method and the variational method without mass conservation constraint. In addition, the effect of the weights in the cost function is examined. Sensitivity tests show that the fluxes estimated by the proposed scheme are insensitive to the stability functions explored in the cost function and measurement errors.
Comparison of air-sea heat fluxes calculated from national centers for enviromental prediction (NCEP) reanalysis data and moored buoy measurement data

Abstract:In this paper,the U.S.national centers for enviromental prediction(NCEP 1 and 2) reanalysis data and the data come from measurement of the moored buoy located in the north of the Yellow Sea are compared and the analysis shows that the NCEP reanalyzed marine meteorological parameters including the wind speed,humidity,air temperature and the ocean surface temperature are reliable.The marine meteorological parameters come from NCEP2 are more close to those come from the buoy measurement,while the net radiation flux computed from NCEP1 is more close to that comes from the buoy measurement.A more appropriate bulk algorithm to recalculate air-sea heat fluxes is recommended.The NCEP1 recalculated net heat flux is underestimated by 42% while the NCEP2 recalculated net heat flux is overestimated by 5% compared with buoy measurement data.The recalculated turbulent heat flux calculated using the combined wind field(the high wind speed is from NCEP1 while the low wind speed is from NCEP2) is much closer to the buoy measurement data.All these provide valuable information for how to select proper reanalysis data for Chinese ocean research.

Abstract:The accuracy of air-sea flux algorithms significantly impacts the simulation performance of climate models. In this study, we evaluated nine widely-used air-sea flux algorithms: those used in the BCC model, the CAM model, the ECMWF model, and the WRF model (with three options), as well as three other commonly-used algorithms: COARE, UA, and VM. An offline comparison revealed significant discrepancies in the flux calculations obtained with different algorithms. Subsequently, we conducted nine sensitivity experiments by coupling these algorithms into the Community Atmosphere Model version 6 (CAM6) to assess the extent and manner in which the selection of flux algorithms influenced the simulated climate. The online simulations introduced complexities due to interactions between the atmosphere and surface fluxes, making the results more intricate. The iterative process of the model created negative feedback between wind speed and momentum flux, as well as between air temperature and heat flux, leading to inconsistencies between online and offline test results. Based on the comprehensive evaluation metric Distance between Indices of Simulation and Observation (DISO), a concept of combined or segmented algorithm was introduced, and a segmented algorithm based on wind speed was found resulting in an overall superior simulation performance compared to the previous nine experiments.

A Motion Correction on Direct Estimations of Air-Sea Fluxes from a Buoy

Abstract:A flux system deployed on a moored buoy has been described,which is capable of directly estimating the airsea fluxes after removing the contamination in the signal due to buoy motion.A triple loop fitting method has been demonstrated for determining the three angular offsets between measurement axes of the sonic anemometer and motion pack.The data collected in an experiment in the Northern Huanghai Sea is used to correct the three sonic anemometer measurements of turbulent wind for buoy motion.The effective removal of wave-scale motion from the spectra and cospectra are demonstrated.Estimates of along-wind momentum flux,sensible heat flux and latent heat flux calculated by the eddy correlation method based on data obtained by sonic anemometer 81000V are shown to be in the same trend and scale with those determined by the bulk aerodynamic method after motion correction.The motion correction not only greatly improve the estimation of the momentum flux but also has a great impact on the calculated sensible heat flux.
Air-Sea Carbon-Dioxide Flux Estimated by Eddy Covariance Method from A Buoy Observation

Abstract:Precise measurements of the CO2 gas transfer across the air-sea interface provide a better understanding of the global carbon cycle. The air-sea CO2 fluxes are obtained by the eddy covariance method and the bulk method from a buoy observation in the northern Huanghai sea. The effects of buoy motion on flux calculated by the eddy covariance method are demonstrated. The research shows that a motion correction can improve the correlation coefficient between the CO2 fluxes estimated from two different levels. Without the CO2-H2O cross-correlation correction which is termed as PKT correction, the air-sea CO2 fluxes estimated by eddy covariance method using the motion corrected data are nearly an order of magnitude larger than those estimated by the bulk method. After the CO2-H2O cross-correlation correction, some eddy covariance CO2 fluxes indeed become closer to the bulk CO2 flux, whereas some are overcorrected which are in response to small water vapor flux.

Abstract:The ECMWF Re-Analysis ( ERA) and NCEP reanalysis monthly latent heat flux (LHF) data are compared with those of the Goddard Satellite-Based Surface Turbulent Fluxes, version2 (GSSTF2), respectively, during the period of 1988 - 2000, over the global oceans between 60 degrees S and 60 degrees N. Qualitatively, the annual mean LHF fields and monthly variations are similar for GSSTF2, ERA, and NCEP. Quantitatively, however, there are distinct differences among them. The annual mean ERA LHF is closer to GSSTF2 than NCEP in the tropics (5 degrees - 25 degrees S and 8 degrees - 22 degrees N) and midlatitudes, while the situation is opposite in other zones. The temporal variability of monthly LHF difference (ERA-GSSTF2) is smaller than that of NCEP-GSSTF2 in the tropics, yet the former and the latter are similar in other zones. To find causes for the discrepancies of LHF, the differences of both the 10-m wind speed (U-10m) and sea-air humidity difference (Q(s-a)) among these data sets have been studied. The differences of the annual mean fields and the monthly variations of the differences between GSSTF2 and the other two data sets in the tropics may be mainly caused by the discrepancies of both U-10m and Q(s-a).

Abstract:The Hilbert–Huang transform (HHT) is applied to analyzing the turbulent time series obtained within the atmospheric boundary layer over the ocean. A method based on the HHT is introduced to reduce the influence of non-turbulent motions on the eddy-covariance based flux by removing non-turbulent modes from the time series. The scale dependence of the flux is examined and a gap mode is identified to distinguish between turbulent modes and non-turbulent modes. To examine the effectiveness of this method it is compared with three conventional methods (block average, moving-window average, and multi-resolution decomposition). The data used are from three sonic anemometers installed on a moored buoy at about 6, 4 and 2.7 m height above the sea surface. For each method, along-wind and cross-wind momentum fluxes and sensible heat fluxes at the three heights are calculated. According to the assumption of a constant-flux layer, there should be no significant difference between the fluxes at the three heights. The results show that the fluxes calculated using HHT exhibit a smaller difference and higher correlation than the other methods. These results support the successful application of HHT to the estimation of air-sea turbulent fluxes.

Abstract:From TOPEX/Poseidon data, the significant uncertainty in global air-sea carbon dioxide (CO2) flux in 2000 is calculated from 21 wind-speed-dependent and 5 sea-state-dependent CO2 transfer velocities and the sea-to-air partial pressure difference Delta p(CO2) proposed by Takahashi, Sutherland, and Kozyr (2010). The sea-state-dependent parameterizations are calculated based on the significant wave height (SWH) and the radar backscatter coefficient sigma(0) measured using the Ku-band altimeter. Uncertainty in air. sea CO2 flux is compared using 26 various transfer velocity formulas. The maximum differences in global monthly mean and 4 degrees zonal mean values for gas transfer velocity among these formulas are 33.20 and 108.20 cm hour (1), respectively. The corresponding differences for sea-to-air CO2 flux are 6.41 and 0.58 Pg C year (1), respectively. Monthly mean global maps of gas transfer velocity and flux are also presented. The average value of the global mean, transfer velocity obtained using the 26 formula is 27.33 +/- 9.75 cm hour (1), and the averaged total global net air-to-sea CO2 flux is 2.77 +/- 1.02 Pg C year (1) after area weighting and Schmidt number correction. The sea-state-dependent parameterizations are near these values, providing a successful method to estimate the air. sea CO2 transfer velocity and flux.

Abstract:Based on the boundary layer field data observed in Nanjing,in 2006,several calculation schemes on the friction speed(u*) and the friction temperature(θ*),are compared.The comparison of u* calculation results show that: in unstable conditions,Pleim scheme results are in agreement with the measured results very well,both in peak value and in trends.In stable conditions,it shows that there is a relatively large deviation in the calculating results.Therefore,a new calculation scheme is provided.The results show that the accuracy of computations is raised by applying the improved scheme,and the average relative error is decreased from 56% to 21%.The comparison of θ* calculation results show that: there is a relatively large deviation between the calculated results of Lee scheme,which is based on the equality of the momentum roughness and heat roughness,and the measured results.But Wesely scheme results make an improvement over the former,for a resistance term is added in this scheme.

Abstract:Spatial distribution of groundwater recharge/discharge fluxes has an important impact on mass and energy exchanges in shallow streambeds. During the last two decades, extensive studies have been devoted to the quantification of one-dimensional (1-D) vertical exchange fluxes. Nevertheless, few studies were conducted to characterize two-dimensional (2-D) heterogeneous flux fields that commonly exist in real-world cases. In this study, we used an iterative ensemble smoother (IES) to quantify the spatial distribution of 2-D exchange fluxes by assimilating hydraulic head and temperature measurements. Four assimilation scenarios corresponding to different potential field applications were tested. In the first three scenarios, the heterogeneous hydraulic conductivity fields were first inferred from hydraulic head and/or temperature measurements, and then the flux fields were derived through Darcy's law using the estimated conductivity fields. In the fourth scenario, the flux fields were estimated directly from the temperature measurements, which is more efficient and especially suitable for the situation that a complete knowledge of flow boundary conditions is unavailable. We concluded that, the best estimation could be achieved through jointly assimilating hydraulic head and temperature measurements, and temperature data were superior to the head data when they were used independently. Overall, the IES method provided more robust and accurate vertical flux estimations than those given by the widely used analytical solution-based methods. Furthermore, IES gave reasonable uncertainty estimations, which were unavailable in traditional methods. Since temperature can be accurately monitored with high spatial and temporal resolutions, the coupling of heat tracing techniques and IES provides promising potential in quantifying complex exchange fluxes under field conditions. Abstract:The flux-variance similarity relation and the vertical transfer of scalars exhibit dissimilarity over different types of surfaces,resulting in different parameterization approaches of relative transport efficiency among scalars to estimate turbulent fluxes using the flux-variance method.We investigated these issues using eddycovariance measurements over an open,homogeneous and flat grassland in the eastern Tibetan Plateau in summer under intermediate hydrological conditions during rainy season.In unstable conditions,the temperature,water vapor,and CO2 followed the flux-variance similarity relation,but did not show in precisely the same way due to different roles（active or passive） of these scalars.Similarity constants of temperature,water vapor and CO2 were found to be 1.12,1.19 and 1.17,respectively.Heat transportation was more efficient than water vapor and CO2.Based on the estimated sensible heat flux,five parameterization methods of relative transport efficiency of heat to water vapor and CO2 were examined to estimate latent heat and CO2 fluxes.The strategy of local determination of flux-variance similarity relation is recommended for the estimation of latent heat and CO2 fluxes.This approach is better for representing the averaged relative transport efficiency,and technically easier to apply,compared to other more complex ones.
A Sensitivity Study of an Effective Aerodynamic Parameter Scheme in Simulating Land–Atmosphere Interaction for a Sea–Land Breeze Case Around the Bohai Gulf of China

Abstract:Numerical simulations of the atmospheric boundary layer require careful representation of the surface heterogeneity, which involves the upscaling parameterization scheme for the heterogeneous surface parameters. In this study, the sensitivity comparisons of an effective aerodynamic parameter scheme against the area-weighted average scheme in simulating the land-atmosphere interaction over heterogeneous terrain were carried out by conducting multinested simulations with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model at coarse and fine resolutions, for a typical sea-land breeze case in the Bohai Gulf of China. The results show that the limited-area model is sensitive to the aerodynamic parameter scheme and the effective aerodynamic parameter scheme exhibits a better performance in simulating the variables and parameters in the land-atmosphere interaction process, such as surface wind speed, sensible heat flux, latent heat flux, friction velocity, and surface air temperature, among others, for short-term simulations. Particularly, the underestimation of sensible heat flux and overestimation of latent heat flux over heterogeneous terrain with area-weighted average scheme for aerodynamic parameters can be improved with the effective parameter scheme in the coastal regions, where the mean simulation error with the effective parameter scheme is about one-half of that with the average scheme for sensible heat flux and one-third for latent heat flux.

Abstract:[1] A global intercomparison of 12 monthly mean land surface heat flux products for the period 1993–1995 is presented. The intercomparison includes some of the first emerging global satellite-based products (developed at Paris Observatory, Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry, University of California Berkeley, University of Maryland, and Princeton University) and examples of fluxes produced by reanalyses (ERA-Interim, MERRA, NCEP-DOE) and off-line land surface models (GSWP-2, GLDAS CLM/Mosaic/Noah). An intercomparison of the global latent heat flux (Qle) annual means shows a spread of ∼20 W m−2 (all-product global average of ∼45 W m−2). A similar spread is observed for the sensible (Qh) and net radiative (Rn) fluxes. In general, the products correlate well with each other, helped by the large seasonal variability and common forcing data for some of the products. Expected spatial distributions related to the major climatic regimes and geographical features are reproduced by all products. Nevertheless, large Qle and Qh absolute differences are also observed. The fluxes were spatially averaged for 10 vegetation classes. The larger Qle differences were observed for the rain forest but, when normalized by mean fluxes, the differences were comparable to other classes. In general, the correlations between Qle and Rn were higher for the satellite-based products compared with the reanalyses and off-line models. The fluxes were also averaged for 10 selected basins. The seasonality was generally well captured by all products, but large differences in the flux partitioning were observed for some products and basins.

Abstract:Quantifying uncertainty in determining the surface soil heat fluxes (G(0)) to close the surface energy balance in micrometeorological studies remains an open question. While numerous methods have been proposed to determine G(0) and have been validated individually, few studies have cross-evaluated these methods to examine how the derived G(0) from different methods affects the closure of the surface energy balance. Using data measured at an arid shrub-land site during summertime, nine different methods were evaluated ranging from conventional heat-storage calorimetry to methods derived directly from the heat transfer equation. Apart from the entire dataset, two subsets were used; one with minimal variation from idealized diurnal radiation cycles and the other with highly variable radiation conditions. Under the entire dataset, the performance of the methods varied while there was a distinct drop-off in the level of closure under the variable radiation conditions. The methods that allowed for the most variation in inputs between time steps performed better than those that used diurnal or constant input values. Because of this, a calorimetry method and Green's function-based method are more highly recommended than other methods. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Discrepancy and Applicability of Various Similarity Functions in Flux Calculations under Stable Conditions

Abstract:Based on data obtained during the Huaihe River Basin Experiment (HUBEX) in 1999, this study intends to detect the quantitative discrepancies in the momentum (τ o), sensible heat (H o) and latent heat (E o) fluxes among six sets of similarity functions with the aerodynamic method. It also aims to clarify the applicability of the functions under stable conditions. The relative discrepancy was studied with the normalized transfer coefficients for τ o, H o and E o, namely C D,C H and C Q, respectively. Except for one set of functions that adopted a rather small von Kármán’s constant (0.365), the relative discrepancy in τ o among the other functions was less than 10%, while that in H o(E o) sometimes reached 25% when the bulk Richardson number (Ri B) was less than 0.07. The absolute discrepancy in the fluxes was studied with statistical computations. Among the six sets of functions, the discrepancy in τ o H o and E o sometimes reached 0.03 kg m−1 s−2, 4W m−2 and 10 W m−2, respectively, and the discrepancy in the energy balance ratio sometimes exceeded 0.1. Furthermore, when Ri B exceeded the critical value (Ri C) for a specific set of functions, no fluxes could be derived with the functions. It is therefore suggested that Ri B be compared with Ri C before computing the fluxes if Ri B is less than Ri C. Finally, two sets of nonlinear similarity functions are recommended, due to their unlimited applicability in terms of Ri B.

Abstract:To clarify the thermal forcing of the Tibetan Plateau, long-term coarse-temporal-resolution data from the China Meteorological Administration have been widely used to estimate surface sensible heat flux by bulk methods in many previous studies; however, these estimates have seldom been evaluated against observations. This study at first evaluates three widely used bulk schemes against Tibet instrumental flux data. The evaluation shows that large uncertainties exist in the heat flux estimated by these schemes; in particular, upward heat fluxes in winter may be significantly underestimated, because diurnal variations of atmospheric stability were not taken into account. To improve the estimate, a new method is developed to disaggregate coarse-resolution meteorological data to hourly according to statistical relationships derived from high-resolution experimental data, and then sensible heat flux is estimated from the hourly data by a well-validated flux scheme. Evaluations against heat flux observations in summer and against net radiation observations in winter indicate that the new method performs much better than previous schemes, and therefore it provides a robust basis for quantifying the Tibetan surface energy budget.

Abstract:This study further examines the errors in estimating surface evaporation using monthly mean surface atmospheric variables from the moored buoys in the equatorial Pacific. Results from two significantly different bulk aerodynamic formulas are compared. It is shown that for both formulas the errors are within 2-3 W m(-2) on average, representing a relative error of less than 3% in the equatorial Pacific. Although small, this error varies systematically across the equatorial Pacific and depends on the bulk formula used. It is also demonstrated that the individual nonlinear contributions associated with the strong dependence of exchange coefficient on surface wind to monthly mean surface evaporation are significant. However, they largely cancel each other, leaving small net effect.
A Comparative Study of Computing Methods of Soil Thermal Diffusivity, Temperature and Heat Flux

Abstract:The measurements from "The Oasis System Energy and Water Cycle Field Experiment" were taken over a farmland underlying surface in the Jinta Oasis of Gansu Province during a period from 11 to 15 June, 2005. Based on the analyses of the characteristics of spit temperature, soil moisture and soil heat flux, the thermal diffusivity of 5 similar to 20 cm soil layer is calculated by using four methods (Amplitude method, Phase method, Harmonic method, and Conduction-convection method). Taking the 5 cm soil temperature as the upper boundary, the soil temperature of the depth 10 cm and 20 cm and the heat flux of the depth 10 cm are modeled by the four methods. The results showed that the soil temperature modeled by Harmonic method is the most accurate, the standard errors of the two depth modeled values against the observation are 0.21 degrees C and 0.18 degrees C. The Conduction-convection method provided better temperature modeled results than Amplitude method and Phase method, but the results would have errors when the method is used to simulate the temperature of shallow soil whose moisture has a significant diurnal variation. The soil heat flux modeled by Harmonic method is better than any other method mentioned above, the correlation coefficient between the modeled value and the observation is 0.868.

Abstract:Documenting the water cycle through modelling and observation is needed for more fundamental understanding of water exchanges in Earth's coupled systems. Spatially and temporally consistent characterization of the hydrological cycle has been a research goal of numerous investigations for many years. Recent applications of sophisticated modelling approaches has seen the development of a number of continental and global scale land surface schemes designed for this purpose, providing insight into the movement of water through the terrestrial system. The Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) is one such programme that has delivered significant insights into water and energy exchange over the Earth's terrestrial surfaces. While there are a number of numerical modelling based approaches that seek to describe terrestrial water and energy cycles, an operational, observationally based and temporally consistent data set for continental scale evapotranspiration is not currently available. As a result, important insights available from such data do not contribute to model assessment and calibration.This study compares latent heat fluxes derived from two land surface models, which have been run over Australia for a 2 year period, with satellite observations and in-situ rainfall measurements. The two land surface models, component schemes of the Global Land Data Assimilation System, are evaluated against a newly developed remote sensing based flux dataset, to identify their degree of hydrological coherence. The remote sensing product utilizes multiple satellite sensors onboard NASA's Aqua satellite to estimate instantaneous heat fluxes at the time of satellite overpass, providing an unprecedented spatial coverage of continental scale evaporation over Australia. An assessment of the agreement between these distinct data sets is undertaken, with a focus on the reproduction of spatial and temporal patterns of latent heat flux over portions of the Australian continent.
