Abstract:Wang Mingyang’s theory of clearing up source and restoring purity is just the last part of the reply to answer Gu Dongqiao,but compared with the front part which concerns Gu Dongqiao’s concrete doubt,it has the fundmental and relatively indepentent meaning. As a result,after the death of Wang Mingyang,his student Hou Xue separated this paragraph from the others and named it the Thoery of Clearing up Source and Restoring Purity,which made the latter enjoy special position in the history of idealist philosophy and ideas. The theory of clearing up source and restoring purity mentioned by Wang Mingyang is mainly concerned with"lust of selfishness"and"evil of utility",and from his view ,the correct method of clearing up source and restoring purity is the real, undistortively sage learning. From his view point,we must understand the heart and teaching of the sage first if we want to understand sagely learning. The heart of the sage is"with all things as a whole",the teaching of the sage extends the idea that "the virtuous man considers all things as a whole"to overcome one’s selfishness,get rid of blindness and restore one’s conscience. Then he discussed the thought of being law-abiding and hard-working,and criticized the"hegemony"in the Spring and Autumn period and Legalism which insists laws,politics and power,he thought hegemony and legalism is the main representatives of the school of utility. And he made an analysis and discription of phenomenon that the learners cannot be law-abiding and rule-keeping because of the thought of utility,and about the officialdom and academic atmosphere. From his view ,the officialdom atmosphere is full of selfishness and utility,and it has become the main disease that ruins the socity. This paragraph written by Wang Mingyang still has great non-ignorable meaning on Chinese people’s practice of establishing the country,ethics and self-cultivation of contemporary cadre officials and life promotion of the general society.
