Abstract:The surface tension of liquids is an important parameter to characterize the properties of liquids. The non-contact method of measuring the surface tension coefficient of liquids has the advantages of being fast, non-destructive, simple and practical. A new non-contact method for measuring the surface tension coefficient of transparent liquid based on the theory of light propagation is developed, and a special phenomenon of "self-interference" is discovered. The "Phase Standing Wave" theory is proposed to explain the phenomenon.The surface wave of the liquid is excited by a frequency-adjustable vibration source (oscillator), and it propagates dynamically in the form of oscillator and cosine wave. When the white light source or laser is incident on the liquid surface obliquely, the phase distribution (cosine-like wave) generated by the light wave carrying the surface wave is first incident on the white paper which locates at the bottom of the liquid, and the oscillator will also form the oscillator shadow on the white paper. The phase distribution of the light wave on the white paper spreads around dynamically in the form of cosine wave centering on the oscillator shadow. After diffuse reflection from the white paper, part of the diffuse reflected light in the observation direction will carry the dynamic phase generated by the surface wave for the first time back to the liquid surface and meets the surface wave again. After the light wave passes through the surface, it will carry the phase generated by the surface wave twice, that is, the superposition of two surface waves occurs in the phase of the light wave. In the phase of the light wave, the phase wave of the oscillator will propagate in the direction of the oscillator shadow, and the phase wave of the oscillator shadow will propagate in the direction of the oscillator.According to the conditions of the formation of standing waves, two surface waves propagating in the opposite direction can form standing waves, so the phase standing waves can only exist within a relatively small range between the oscillator and the oscillator shadow. Thus the dark and bright "Self-interference" with stable stripes can be observed in the far field. When white light and laser are used as light sources respectively, the fringe spacing remains unchanged, indicating that the fringe spacing is independent of the wavelength of incident light, and the light wave is only the carrier of the mechanical wave phase. The light wave with different wavelength and coherence has no influence on the experimental measurement results.The fringe spacing is measured automatically by analyzing and processing the image captured by camera. According to the dispersion relationship of surface waves, the surface tension coefficient of water is obtained automatically and accurately. The experimental setup is simple, easy to operate, the experimental phenomenon is intuitive, the stripes are clear and stable, and the anti-interference capability is strong, and can be observed in all directions. It can be widely applied to measure the surface tension coefficient of other transparent liquids.

Abstract:This study developed a simple method to measure liquid surface tension based on curve fitting technique. In this study, the explicit lying droplet profile function in terms of surface tension was derived by solving 2-D Young-Laplace equation exactly, and the derived profile function was superior to the existing approximate profile functions. By fitting the derived profile function with the detected droplet profile image data, the liquid surface tension was then obtained. The proposed method does not rely on any new instrument, it is quite different in principle and simpler than the traditional methods.

Construction of spinning drop tensiometer and determination of liquid-liquid interfacial tension

Abstract:In order to determine the low interfacial tension, a spinning drop interfacial tensiometer was constructed. The apparatus was calibrated by measuring the interfacial tension of some low molecular weight systems and polyethylene glycol/dextran aqueous two-phase systems, with the determination error of 3%. The interfacial tensions of PEG1000/Na 2SO 4, PEG/MgSO 4 and PEG1000/(NH 4)SO 4 aqueous two-phase systems were determined. It is found that the salt type has strong effect on the interfacial tension.

Abstract:It is of both practical and scientific significance to study the temperature dependence of contact angles, towards development of surface wettability manipulation techniques for enhanced phase change heat transfer as well as the theoretical estimation of solid interfacial energy. However, the variations of surface wettability of a hydrophobic solid with altering temperature remain unclear. In this work, in situ characterizations of the contact angle of water on Teflon (PTFE) surfaces as well as the surface tension of water over a temperature spectrum from ∼25 °C to 160 °C at pressurized condition (2 MPa) were conducted by employing the sessile drop and pendant drop methods, respectively. A nearly invariant trend of the contact angle of water was observed over the entire temperature range. Moreover, it was shown that the surface tension of water linearly declines with raising the temperature. Based on the theory of surface thermodynamics, the effects of temperature on the contact angles were analyzed with the variations of interfacial tensions.

Abstract:Equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations have been used to investigate the fluid adsorption phenomena and calculate the surface tension in porous media at different temperatures, densities and pore widths. The facts that most of the fluid particles are adsorbed adherent to the pore walls and the surface forms near the walls have been found, and that the surface is not stable which means there exists an oscillation phenomenon in pores have been also found. The surface tension in pores is much bigger than that in macrovolume systems like normal liquid–liquid and liquid–vapor interfaces, and it will increase with the increase of density and pore width, but will decrease with the increase of temperature.

Abstract:The ring method, due to its basic form, is often used in the classroom for an immediate and intuitive grasp of concept of surface tension. Yet, during the measuring process, the large and small results trouble the students. The large values are obtained from the maximum-pull, and the small from the tear-off moment. In this paper, we demonstrate a series of rings with different thicknesses to investigate these two moments. In the water measurement, by subtracting the weight of the liquid raised by the ring or replacing the ring-diameter with tearing-diameter for the moments of maximum pull and film breaking, respectively, a corrected surface tension is obtained. The same correction is also applied in the determination of Ethylene Glycol and ethanol, but only the moment of maximum pull is applicable. These experimental results are interesting, and will largely stimulate students to understand the concept of surface tension and the ring method of measurement.

Abstract:Surface tension is one of the most important thermophysical properties of fluids, related to vapor - liquid interfacial effects that must be known to analyze and calculate the heat transfer through heat-exchanging surfaces with bubbles or fluid drops. The principle and the key technique of the differential capillary rise method (DCRM) for measuring the surface tension of mixtures are introduced. The surface tension measurement system based on the DCRM method is established and the measurement uncertainty is also analyzed and determined using the principle of error transfer.
An Improved Method For Measuring Surface Tension With Fiber Drop Analysis

Abstract:Fiber drop analysis is a new multi-analysis technology for measuring the physical and chemical properties of liquids. One parameter measured by the fiber drop analyzer is surface tension. Constant delivery mode is a conventional mode for surface tension measurement, in which the accuracy is mainly affected by the uncertainty in delivery speed. We present here an improved relative measurement method, in which a remnant drop model is used to analyze the surface tension. A "separating vibration" is used as an additional measurement, allowing us to reduce the error caused by the uncertainty in delivery speed. Experiment results show the capability of the improve method.

Abstract:A novel microfluidic approach to measure interfacial tension of immiscible fluids rapidly is reported. This method rests upon quantitative force balance analysis of drop formation dynamics in a coaxial microfluidic device. The values of interfacial tension for several two liquids without/with surfactants are measured. These measurements compare well with those measured by the commercial interfacial tensiometry. The viscosity of water phase fluid can also be accurately measured in the same microfluidic device. Several model systems with interfacial tension from 1.0 to 10.0 mN/m and water phase viscosity from 1.0 to 10.0 mPa.s are tested in this work.

Abstract:The accuracy and stability of surface tension measurements are improved fitting the entire surface profile in the pendent drop method with an algorithm to determine the initial value for two-dimensional optimization.Moreover,the error function was modified by a weighting factor which reduced the influence of the droplet profile deviation point on the surface tension measurement.The full-profile fitting method was used to calculate the surface tension of water and ethanol at 25℃ and atmosphere.The final results show the standard deviation was reduced by 40％ compared with the previous method,which verifies the stability and repeatability of this full-profile fitting pendent drop method.

Abstract:Measurement of the surface tension of organic solvents using a simple microfabricated chip was developed based on the principle of differential capillary rise. The theory, design, fabrication, and characterization of the chip were described. A two-step etching technique was used to fabricate a number of microchannels with different dimensions on the glass substrate. Capillarity was used to introduce liquid samples, which requires no power supply or actuator to be applied in the experiment. Liquid in different microchannels generated capillary rise with different heights, by which surface tension maybe calculated. Seven common organic solvents, ethanol, acetone, acetonitrile, dichloromethane, hexane, methanol, and toluene, were tested at room temperature. The surface tension of ethanol at different temperatures was measured over the range of 5-45 degrees C. Relative standard deviation for seven replicate measurements at each temperature is 0.20-0.74%. The results showed good reproducibility and acceptable precision compared with traditional methods. Very low reagent consumptions and short analysis time were achieved using this simple method.

Abstract:In this paper, a computerized device with the CCD camera for the automatic determination of important surface properties of liquid and solid in contact is described. This device is based on image processing algorithms. The system is capable of measuring the surface tension (surface energy) of liquid and the wettability of a solid surface in the wide range of temperatures, up to 1800/spl deg/C. The results obtained with this device are far more accurate than those obtained by means of the currently applied, extremely time consuming non-automatic methods and the operator's subjective evaluation.

Abstract:Surface tension is a physical property that is central to our understanding of wetting phenomena. One could easily measure liquid surface tension using commercially available tensiometers (e.g., Wilhelmy plate method) or by optical imaging (e.g., pendant drop method). However, such instruments are designed for bulk liquid volumes on the order of milliliters. In order to perform similar measurements on extremely small sample volumes in the range of femtoliters, atomic force microscope (AFM) is considered as a promising tool. It was previously reported that by fabricating a special "nanoneedle"-shaped cantilever probe, a Wilhelmy-like experiment can be performed with AFM. By measuring the capillary force between such special probes and a liquid surface, surface tension could be calculated. Here, we carried out measurements on microscopic droplets with AFM, but instead, using standard pyramidal cantilever tips. The cantilevers were coated with a hydrophilic polyethylene glycol-based polymer brush in a simple one-step process, which reduced its contact angle hysteresis for most liquids. Numerical simulations of a liquid drop interacting with a pyramidal or conical geometry were used to calculate surface tension from the experimentally measured force. The results on micrometer-sized drops agree well with bulk tensiometer measurement of three test liquids (mineral oil, ionic liquid, and glycerol), within a maximum error of 10%. Our method eliminates the need for specially fabricated "nanoneedle" tips, thus reducing the complexity and cost of measurement.

A Laminar-Jet-discharging Method for Measuring the Interfacial Tension of Deformable Surfaces

Abstract:We propose a laminar-jet-discharging method to measure the interfacial tension of deformable surfaces such as soap bubbles. This method avoids the need to measure the small pressure difference inside and outside a soap bubble in a static state. By allowing the air in a soap bubble to discharge in a laminar flow state through a long tube, we show that the surface tension of the soap bubble is proportional to the rate of change of the fourth power of the bubble radius. Experimentally, we verify that this linear relationship is valid over a long period and thus can be measured with cameras at slow recording rates. Our method offers a straightforward and accurate way to measure the surface tension of soap bubbles using easy-to-obtain devices. In addition, we propose a new development of the pendant drop method based on the silhouette of the drop, which does not require any pressure transducer or computation of the second-order derivatives of the drop profile and hence is easier to implement and less sensitive to the accuracy of the drop profile determination. For pure liquids, results from the new pendant drop method compare well with standard values. This method is thus used to verify the laminar-jet-discharging measurements.

Abstract:A modified apparatus for measuring surface tension with the bubble-pressure method is proposed. Compared with a traditional instrument, this apparatus improved the accuracy of maximum pressure difference measurement and achieved the hydrostatic pressure correction. The apparatus was employed to determine the surface tension values of distilled water and ethanol, respectively, at different temperatures. Additionally, the cross-sectional area of the ethanol molecule was obtained from the surface tension of ethanol solutions with different concentrations and Gibbs adsorption. It was found that all measured values were in accordance with literature data. Thus, the improved device exhibited excellent accuracy and reliability. Abstract:A pendant drop tensiometry apparatus aided by video-image digitization technology was established, by which static interface or surface tension of some liquids was measured with satisfactory results.In order to study the effect of emulsifier concentration on emulsion stability, dynamic interfacial tension was measured between toluene and water against concentration of Tween 60(Polyoxyethylene(20) stearyl-sorbitanate). As expected, higher concentration is the Tween 60 solution in toluene injected into the toluene phase, faster falls the interface tension between toluene and water.Furthermore, it reveals interestingly that two steps of diffusion occur in the system, i.e ., at low and high concentration, after the surfactant solution is injected.The characteristic process of dynamic interface tension can be ascribed to diffusion control because of linearity between interface tension and the minus second root of aging time.The discovery is correlated to the fact that much higher concentration of surfactant above its critical micelle concentration is often required when a stable emulsion is planned to prepare.

Abstract:The properties of the interface between materials have practical implications in various fields, encompassing capillary action, foam and emulsion stability, adhesion properties of materials and mass and heat transfer processes. Studying the dynamics of interfaces is also fundamental for understanding intermolecular interactions, change of molecular conformations and molecular aggregations. Pendant-drop tensiometry and its extension, the oscillating drop method, are simple, versatile methods used to measure surface tension, interfacial tension and interfacial rheological properties. These methods can, however, generate unreliable results because of inadequate material preparation, an incorrect calibration method, inappropriate selection of data for analysis, neglect of optical influences or operating the system outside the linear viscoelastic regime. In addition, many studies fail to report accurate uncertainties. This protocol addresses all these critical points and provides detailed descriptions of some operation tips relating to purifying methods for different kinds of material, the time frame for analyzing measurement data, the correction method for optical effects, implementation of the oscillating method with a common programmable pump and remedies for some common problems encountered during the measurement. Examples of interfacial tension measurements for two- and three-phase systems, as well as interfacial dilational modulus measurements for N2 and surfactant solutions, are provided to illustrate procedural details and results. A single measurement takes minutes to hours to complete, while the entire protocol, including the leak test, cleaning, repeated measurements and data analysis, may take several days.
The Experimental Research on the Influence of Surface Energy of Liquid Interface Layer on the Pull-off Force

Abstract:When the interface layer exists, capillary force increases the Pull-off force. The surface energy of the interface layer is one important influencing element of capillary force. The interfacial tension apparatus was used to measure the surface energy of five different kinds of liquids, such as 1, 2dichloropropane and 1, 2ethanediol. The Pull-off forces were measured by using surface force apparatus respectively, when the different liquid acted as interface layer. Within certain range, the results show; when the viscosity of the liquids almost equal, Pull-off force increases with the surface energy; when the surface energies are equivalent, Pull-off force increases with the amount of liquids.

Abstract:In two-phase dispersion process coupling with interphase mass transfer, the dynamic variation of inter-facial tension is a key parameter to determine the flow behavior. Simultaneous determination of the dynamic interfacial tension (DIFT) and the transient fluid concentration is the fundamental for under-standing and predicting the DIFT, which is seldom reported in previous study. In this study, a novel method was developed to achieve the goal during the interphase mass transfer. Micro interface sensor was applied as a probe to detect the transient droplet concentration and the DIFT simultaneously. Based on the new method, the DIFT was studied in the process of the solute diffuses from the droplet to the continuous phase, and vice-versa. The transient concentration of the droplet was found to signif-icantly affect the interfacial tension. Besides, the molecular movement across the interface may also affect the interfacial tension, which is seldom reported in previous studies. The method was demon-strated to be reliable and simple. Abstract:We analyze the surface tension exerted at the interface between an active fluid and a solid boundary in terms of tangential forces. Focusing on active systems known to possess an equation of state for the pressure, we show that interfacial forces are of a more complex nature. Using a number of macroscopic setups, we show that the surface tension is a combination of an equation-of-state abiding part and of setup-dependent contributions. The latter arise from generic setup-dependent steady currents which "dress" the measurement of the "bare" surface tension. The former shares interesting properties with its equilibrium counterpart, and can be used to generalize the Young-Laplace law to active systems. We finally show how a suitably designed probe can directly access this bare surface tensions, which can also be computed using a generalized Virial formula.
