Abstract:Two solid solutions, La4Cu(3-x)Zn(x)MoO12 (0.05 < or = x < or = 0.20, SS1) and La4Cu(3-x)Zn(x)MoO12 (0.30 < or = x < or = 2.40, SS2), were synthesized at ambient pressure and at temperatures from 1025 to 1200 degrees C by traditional solid-state reactions. Their structures were determined from X-ray powder diffraction with the help of electron and neutron diffraction. The atomic arrangements of SS1 and SS2 are similar, but their space groups are different, Pmnm for SS1 and P-1 for SS2, respectively. The copper, zinc, and molybdenum are coordinated by oxygen in corner-sharing trigonal bipyramids that are sandwiched between layers of lanthanum cations. In the transition metal cations layer of SS2, the copper and zinc cations order into a Kagomé-like lattice of triangular clusters. The magnetism has been measured from 2 to 300 K and is highly influenced by the geometric arrangement of the Cu(II) and Zn(II) cations. The number of free electrons per three Cu atoms is close to one for all samples in SS1 and SS2 indicating that the system can be well expressed by independent Cu(II)3 clusters. Spontaneous magnetization was observed in the system.

Effect of Zn Doping on the Antiferromagnetism in Kagomecu4−xznx(oh)6fbr

Abstract:Barlowite Cu-4(OH)(6)FBr shows three-dimensional (3D) long-range antiferromagnetism, which is fully suppressed in Cu3Zn(OH)(6)FBr with a kagome quantum spin liquid ground state. Here we report systematic studies on the evolution of magnetism in the Cu4-xZnx(OH)(6)FBr system as a function of x to bridge the two limits of Cu-4(OH)(6)FBr (x = 0) and Cu3Zn(OH)(6)FBr (x = 1). Neutron-diffraction measurements reveal a hexagonal-to-orthorhombic structural change with decreasing temperature in the x = 0 sample. While confirming the 3D antiferromagnetic nature of low-temperature magnetism, the magnetic moments on some Cu2+ sites on the kagome planes are found to be vanishingly small, suggesting strong frustration already exists in barlowite. Substitution of interlayer Cu2+ with Zn2+ with gradually increasing x completely suppresses the bulk magnetic order at around x = 0.4 but leaves a local secondary magnetic order up to x similar to 0.8 with a slight decrease in its transition temperature. The high-temperature magnetic susceptibility and specific-heat measurements further suggest that the intrinsic magnetic properties of kagome spin liquid planes may already appear from x > 0.3 samples. Our results reveal that the Cu4-xZnx(OH)(6)FBr may be the long-thought experimental playground for the systematic investigations of the quantum phase transition from a long-range antiferromagnet to a topologically ordered quantum spin liquid.

Abstract:We successfully synthesized La1.85Sr0.15Cu1-xMxOy (M=Zn,Ni,Mg) with y≤0.30 ceramic cuprates. X-ray diffraction studies show that there is no impurity phase in all Zn,Ni,Mg-doped LSCO. Rietveld refinement technique is used to obtain the lattice constant,atomic position coordinates and reflection profile parameters for all samples. There is a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic phase transition in the range of 0.10c of the samples in superconducting state.

Abstract:A new type of 1212 phase cuprates (B,Cd)Sr2YCu2Oy has been synthesized by solid state reaction. In the (B0.5Cd0.5)Sr2-xBaxYCu2Oy system, Ba substitution induces superconductivity, with the optimum T-c of 60K for x=0.6. The nonmonotonic variation of T-c with Ba content is discussed.

Abstract:The crystal structure, oxygen content, resistance, Hall effect and superconducting crkical temperature of YBa2Cu1-xCox(Cu1-yZny)2Oz system (0≤x, y≤0.1) have been studied. It is found that with increase of Co and Zn contents, the transformation from superconducting metal with orthorhombic structure to non-superconducting semiconductor with tetragonal structure occurs. At the same time, the Tc and the carrier density nh decrease sharply. The effects with Co and Zn doping simultaneously are not simply additive. With increase of Co and Zn concentrations, there is a strong coorelation between Co doping on Cu(l) and Zn on Cu (2) sites. The experimental results show that the coupling between Cu-O planes and Cu-O chains gives much influence on the electronic transport properties in normal states and superconductivity. The characteristics of the hole carriers and its dependence on Tc in 123 phase compounds are also dicussed.

Abstract:A new layered superconducting cuprate RuSr2(Gd2−xCex)Cu2Oz with a Tc (onset) of 30 K determined by resistance measurements has been synthesized. The crystal structure is determined by X-ray powder diffraction and Rietveld analysis. The compound RuSr2(Gd2−xCex)Cu2Oz has a tetragonal symmetry with lattice parameters a = 3.8470(5), c = 28.649(1) Å for x = 0.6 and a space group of I4/mmm. It is isostructural to the superconductor TaSr2(Ln,Ce)2Cu2Oz.

Abstract:New cuprates with nominal composition (Pb0.75Mo0.25)Sr-2(Nd1-xCax)Cu2O7-delta (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1) were synthesized by solid state reactions in NP The crystal structure was characterized by x-ray powder diffraction as tetragonal. Dc electrical resistance and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements were applied to check the existence of superconductivity in these cuprates. Superconductivity with T-conset up to 73 K is observed in the range 0.4 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.6. Synthesis in N-2 is found to be necessary for obtaining superconductivity in these cuprates. Preparation in air or post-treatment in flowing oxygen destroys superconductivity. Comparison with previous Pb-based 1212 superconducting oxides is made. The valence of Pb and the possible position of Mo in the lattice are discussed.

Abstract:We performed systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements in situ on T'La2-xCexCuO4 +/-delta (LCCO) thin films over the extended doping range prepared by the refined ozone/vacuum annealing method. Electron doping level (n), estimated from the measured Fermi surface (FS) volume, varied from 0.05 to 0.23, fully encompassing the superconducting dome. We observed an absence of the insulating behavior around n similar to 0.05 and the shift of FS reconstruction to n similar to 0.11 in LCCO from n similar to 0.15 in other electron-doped cuprates, suggesting that the antiferromagnetic order is strongly suppressed in this material. The possible explanation may lie in the enhanced next-nearest-neighbor hopping in LCCO because of the largest La3+ ionic radius among all the lanthanide elements.

Abstract:(Pb0.5Cu0.5)(Sr0.5La0.5)2CuOz (abbreviated as (Pb,Cu)-"1-2-0-1") with superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of 25 K is a member (n = 1) of one of the homologous series of cuprate superconductors, (Pb4+,Cu2+)(Sr2+,Ln3+)2(Y3+,Ca2+)n-1Cu2+nO2-2n+3 (n = 1-4; Ln: lanthanoid elements). For the (Pb,Cu)-"1-2-0-1", substitution effects of 3d transition metal elements M (M = Fe, Co, and Zn) for the Cu site in the (Pb,Cu)-O charge-reservoir layer (labelled as Cu(1)) are systematically investigated. Because Fe, Co and Ni ions exist as divalent or trivalent in ionic crystals, the Sr2+/La3+ ratio in the (Sr,Ln) site is adjusted to satisfy charge neutrality, assuming that they are in a trivalent state. This results in the successful synthesis of new materials with nominal compositions of (Pb0.5M0.5)(Sr0.75La0.25)2CuOz (M = Fe and Co). This observation suggests that Fe and Co are trivalent in "1-2-0-1". For M = Zn, the nominal composition of (Pb0.5Zn0.5)(Sr0.5La0.5)2CuOz was found to yield a nearly single "1-2-0-1" phase. Temperature dependence of electrical resistivity and magnetization were measured, and superconductivity was confirmed only for the case of M = Zn with a Tc of 19.7 K. For these three materials, the distribution of Fe, Co and Zn between Cu(1) and another Cu site in the Cu-O2 plane labelled as Cu(2) was investigated employing transmission electron microscopy, which showed that Fe, Co, and Zn occupy both the Cu(1) and Cu(2) sites.

Abstract:New cuprates of (Bi, In)Sr2Gd1-xCaxCu2Oy have been synthesized by the solid state reaction method in an oxidizing atmosphere. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicates that the samples have space group of P4/mmm with cell parameters of a=0.38378(5) nm, c= 1.1761(2) nm when x = 0. The compounds have the same crystal structure as Tl-1212 except for containing a (Bi, In)O monolayer rather than a TlO layer. Ca2+ substitution for Gd3+ (x less-than-or-equal-to 0.4) results in a decrease of the a-axis, which suggests that holes are induced in the CuO2 sheet. A semiconductor-to-superconductor transition occurs around x=0.3. The sample of x=0.4 exhibits superconductivity with a T(c)(onset)= 42 K and T(c)(zero) = 18 K from the measurement of the temperature dependence of resistivity.

Abstract:High-temperature superconductivity is reported in a series of compositionally-complex cuprates with varying degrees of size and spin disorder. Three compositions of Y-site alloyed YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$, i.e., (5Y)BCO, were prepared using solid-state methods with different sets of rare earth ions on the Y-site. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirm these samples have high phase-purity and homogeneous mixing of the Y-site elements. The superconducting phase transition was probed using electrical resistivity and AC magnetometry measurements, which reveal the transition temperature, T$_C$, is greater than 91 K for all series when near optimal oxygen doping. Importantly, these T$_C$ values are only $\approx$1$\%$ suppressed relative to pure YBCO (T$_C$ = 93 K). This result highlights the robustness of pairing in the YBCO structure to specific types of disorder. In addition, the chemical flexibility of compositionally-complex cuprates allows spin and lattice disorder to be decoupled to a degree not previously possible in high-temperature superconductors. This feature makes compositionally-complex cuprates a uniquely well-suited materials platform for studying proposed pairing interactions in cuprates.

Abstract:The distribution of chemically similar transition-metal ions is a fundamental issue in the study of herbertsmithite-type kagome antiferromagnets. Using synchrotron radiation, we have performed resonant powder x-ray diffractions on newly synthesized CoCu3(OH)6Cl2, which provide an exact distribution of transition-metal ions in the frustrated antiferromagnet. Both magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements are quantitatively consistent with the occupation fractions determined by resonant x-ray diffraction. The distribution of transition-metal ions and residual magnetic entropy suggest a novel low temperature (T < 4 K) magnetism, where the interlayer triangular spins undergo a spin-glass freezing while the kagome spins still keep highly frustrated.

Abstract:Practically impurity-free ceramic superconductors of La1.85Sr0.15Cu1-yZnyO4 with 0.00 less than or equal to y less than or equal to 0.30 were synthesized. The structure of these Zn-doped samples was characterized by X-ray diffraction studies. Rietveld refinements show that there is a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic phase transition which occurs at about y approximate to 0.15. The bond length between the two apical oxygen atoms in the CuO6 octahedra for the Zn-doped samples decreases with increasing content of Zn in the tetragonal region, and the tilt angle of the CuO6 octahedra increases with the content of Zn in the orthorhombic region. The metal-insulator transition is also observed in this Zn-doped systems.

Abstract:A new oxide, LaMn3Co2Mn2O12, was synthesized under high-pressure (7 GPa) and high-temperature (1423 K) conditions. The compound crystallizes in an AA′3B4O12-type quadruple perovskite structure with space group Im3̅. The Rietveld structural analysis combined with soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals the charge combination to be LaMn3+3Co2+2Mn4+2O12, where the La3+ and Mn3+ are 1:3 ordered respectively at the A and A′ sites, whereas the Co2+ and Mn4+ are disorderly distributed at the B site. This is in sharp contrast to R2Co2+Mn4+O6 (R = La and rare earth) double perovskites, in which the Co2+ and Mn4+ charge states are always orderly distributed with a rocksalt-type fashion, giving rise to a long-range magnetic ordering. As a result, LaMn3Co2Mn2O12 displays spin glassy magnetic properties due to the random Co2+ and Mn4+ distribution, as demonstrated by dc and ac magnetic susceptibility as well as specific heat measurements. Possible factors that affect the B-site degree of order in perovskite structures are discussed.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Sodium and potassium have been doped into La7SrCu4O16−δ to form La7+2xSr1−4xKxNaxCu4O16−δ solid solutions by a solid-state reaction, which crystallizes in the I4/mmm space group when 0 ≤ x < 0.16 and Fmmm when 0.16 < x ≤ 0.25. With the equivalent replacement of four Sr2+ by one Na+, one K+ and two La3+, it is very interesting to find that Tzeroc (the definition is presented in the introduction part) of La7+2xSr1−4xKxNaxCu4O16−δ does not remain constant with an increase in x but first increases from 14.8 K for x = 0.00 to 33.9 K for x = 0.10 and then decreases to 18.5 K for x = 0.175.
