Abstract:The chemistry of atmospheric CH4, CO, and CO2 is treated with a one-dimensional model incorporating the effects of eddy diffusion in the altitude region of 0–120 km. Methane is well mixed up to about 20 km, and its mixing ratio declines steadily at higher altitudes. Carbon monoxide is well mixed in the troposphere. Its mixing ratio decreases initially in the lower stratosphere, reaches a minimum value of the order of 10−8 near 30 km, and increases steadily at higher elevations. Carbon dioxide is well mixed in the troposphere. Its mixing ratio declines somewhat in the stratosphere, and this decline reflects the importance of anthropogenic production of CO2 and the relatively long time constants for stratospheric diffusion. Mixing ratios of CO and CO2 are comparable near 120 km. Combustion is a minor source of CO in comparison with oxidation of CH4. Oxidation of CH4 also provides a significant source of stratospheric H2O and H2. The principal sinks for CO and CH4 involve reactions with OH. Carbon dioxide is removed at the surface and to a lesser extent in the atmosphere by photolysis. Mean atmospheric residence times for CO and CH4 are 0.3 and 7 years, respectively.

Abstract:Measurements of CO2, N2O and CH4 are analyzed to define hemispheric average vertical exchange rates in the lower stratosphere from November 1992 to October 1993. Effective vertical diffusion coefficients were small in summer, less-than-or-equal-to 1 m2s-1 at altitudes below 25 km; values were similar near the tropopause in winter, but increased markedly with altitude. The analysis suggests possibly longer residence times for exhaust from stratospheric aircraft, and more efficient transport from 20 km to the middle stratosphere, than predicted by many current models. Seasonally-resolved measurements of stratopheric CO2 and N2O provide significant new constraints on rates for global-scale vertical transport.
Trace chemical measurements from the northern midlatitude lowermost stratosphere in early spring: Distributions, correlations, and fate

Abstract:In situ measurements of a large number of trace chemicals from the midlatitude (37-57 degrees N) lower stratosphere were performed with the NASA DC-8 aircraft during March 1994. Deepest penetrations into the stratosphere (550 ppb O-3, 279 ppb N2O, and 350 K potential temperature) corresponded to a region that has been defined as the "lowermost stratosphere" (LS) by Holton et al. [1995]. Analysis of data shows that the mixing ratios of long-lived tracer species (e. g. CH4, HNO3, NOy, CFCs) are linearly correlated with those of O-3 and N2O. A Delta NOy/Delta O-3 of 0.0054 ppb/ppb and Delta NOy/Delta N2O of -0.081 ppb/ppb Is in good agreement with other reported measurements from the DC-8. These slopes are however, somewhat steeper than those reported from the ER-2 airborne studies. We find that the reactive nitrogen budget in the LS is largely balanced with HNO3 accounting for 80% of NOy, and PAN and NOx together accounting for 5%. A number of oxygenated species (e. g. acetone, H2O2) were present and may provide an important in situ source of HOx in the LS. SO2 mixing ratios were found to increase in the stratosphere at a rate that was comparable to the decline in OCS levels. No evidence of particle formation could be observed. Ethane, propane, and acetylene mixing ratios declined rapidly in the LS with Cl atoms likely playing a key role in this process. A number of reactive hydrocarbons/halocarbons (e. g. C6H6, CH3I) were present at low but measurable concentrations.

Abstract:Understanding of the stratosphere has advanced significantly over the past decade though problems remain. Chemical processes controlling ozone are reviewed with emphasis on the role of radicals such as NO2 and ClO. Attention is directed to discrepancies between model and observed values for the concentration of ClO near 40 km at middle latitudes and to similar difficulties with NO2 at high latitudes in winter. These problems should be resolved to allow more confident assessment of the impact on O3 of enhanced levels of CO2, H2O, CH4 and various chlorocarbons.

Abstract:Abstract Chlorinated very short‐lived substances (Cl‐VSLS) are ubiquitous in the troposphere and can contribute to the stratospheric chlorine budget. In this study, we present measurements of atmospheric dichloromethane (CH 2 Cl 2 ), tetrachloroethene (C 2 Cl 4 ), chloroform (CHCl 3 ), and 1,2‐dichloroethane (1,2‐DCA) obtained during the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Atmospheric Tomography (ATom) global‐scale aircraft mission (2016–2018), and use the Community Earth System Model (CESM) updated with recent chlorine chemistry to further investigate their global tropospheric distribution. The measured global average Cl‐VSLS mixing ratios, from 0.2 to 13 km altitude, were 46.6 ppt (CH 2 Cl 2 ), 9.6 ppt (CHCl 3 ), 7.8 ppt (1,2‐DCA), and 0.84 ppt (C 2 Cl 4 ) measured by the NSF NCAR Trace Organic Analyzer (TOGA) during ATom. Both measurements and model show distinct hemispheric gradients with the mean measured Northern to Southern Hemisphere (NH/SH) ratio of 2 or greater for all four Cl‐VSLS. In addition, the TOGA profiles over the NH mid‐latitudes showed general enhancements in the Pacific basin compared to the Atlantic basin, with up to ∼18 ppt difference for CH 2 Cl 2 in the mid troposphere. We tagged regional source emissions of CH 2 Cl 2 and C 2 Cl 4 in the model and found that Asian emissions dominate the global distributions of these species both at the surface (950 hPa) and at high altitudes (150 hPa). Overall, our results confirm relatively high mixing ratios of Cl‐VSLS in the UTLS region and show that the CESM model does a reasonable job of simulating their global abundance but we also note the uncertainties with Cl‐VSLS emissions and active chlorine sources in the model. These findings will be used to validate future emission inventories and to investigate the fast convective transport of Cl‐VSLS to the UTLS region and their impact on stratospheric ozone.

Changing Composition of the Global Stratosphere

Abstract:The current understanding of stratospheric chemistry is reviewed with particular attention to the influence of human activity. Models are in good agreement with measurements for a variety of species in the mid-latitude stratosphere, with the possible exception of ozone (O(3)) at high altitude. Rates calculated for loss of O(3) exceed rates for production by about 40 percent at 40 kilometers, indicating a possible but as yet unidentified source of high-altitude O(3). The rapid loss of O(3) beginning in the mid-1970s at low altitudes over Antarctica in the spring is due primarily to catalytic cycles involving halogen radicals. Reactions on surfaces of polar stratospheric clouds play an important role in regulating the abundance of these radicals. Similar effects could occur in northern polar regions and in cold regions of the tropics. It is argued that the Antarctic phenomenon is likely to persist: prompt drastic reduction in the emission of industrial halocarbons is required if the damage to stratospheric O(3) is to be reversed.
Low latitude mesospheric clouds in a warmer climate

Abstract:Using model simulations this study shows that with sufficiently high methane emissions cloud cover can become widespread in Earth's mesosphere, even at middle and low latitudes. The clouds increase from a combination of methane oxidation to water vapor and reduced mesospheric temperatures. This cloud cover is too optically thin to affect climate but might have chemical effects. Observations show that mesospheric clouds (MCs) have been increasing in recent decades, presumably due to increased mesospheric water vapor which is mainly caused by greater methane (CH4) oxidation in the middle atmosphere. Past warm climates such as those of the early Cretaceous and Paleogene periods are thought to have had higher CH4 concentrations than present day, and future CH4 concentrations will also likely continue to rise. Here, idealized atmosphere chemistry‐climate model experiments forced with strong polar‐amplified sea‐surface temperatures and elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) and CH4 concentrations predict a substantial spreading of MCs to middle and low latitudes, well beyond regions where they are currently found. Sensitivity tests show that increased water vapor from CH4 oxidation and cooling from increased CO2 and CH4 concentrations create favorable conditions for cloud formation, producing MC fractions of 0.02 in the low latitudes and 0.1 in the mid‐latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere when CH4 concentration is 16× higher than pre‐industrial. Further increases in CH4 result in a monotonic increase in low‐ and mid‐latitude MCs. A uniform surface ocean warming, changes in polar amplification, or the solar constant do not significantly affect our results. While the appearance of these clouds is interesting, their ice and liquid water content is not sufficient to cause a significant radiative effect. On the other hand, dehydration of the mesosphere due to these low‐ and mid‐latitude MCs could potentially lead to a reduction in atomic hydrogen, thereby affecting mesospheric ozone concentration, although further study is required to confirm this.

Abstract:Numerical weather prediction (NWP) models are known to possess a distinct moist bias in the mid-latitude lower stratosphere, which is expected to affect the ability to accurately predict weather and climate. This paper investigates the vertical structure of the moist bias in the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) latest global reanalysis ERA5 using a unique multi-campaign data set of highly resolved water vapour profiles observed with a differential absorption lidar (DIAL) on board the High Altitude and LOng range research aircraft (HALO). In total, 41 flights in the mid-latitudes from six field campaigns provide roughly 33 000 profiles with humidity varying by 4 orders of magnitude. The observations cover different synoptic situations and seasons and thus are suitable to characterize the strong vertical gradients of moisture in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS). The comparison to ERA5 indicates high positive and negative deviations in the UT, which on average lead to a slightly positive bias (15 %–20 %). In the LS, the moist bias rapidly increases up to a maximum of 55 % at 1.3 km altitude above the thermal tropopause (tTP) and decreases again to 15 %–20 % at 4 km altitude. Such a vertical structure is frequently observed, although the magnitude varies from flight to flight. The layer depth of increased moist bias is smaller at high tropopause altitudes and larger when the tropopause is low. Our results also suggest a seasonality of the moist bias, with the maximum in summer exceeding autumn by up to a factor of 3. During one field campaign, collocated ozone and water vapour profile observations enable a classification of tropospheric, stratospheric, and mixed air using water vapour–ozone correlations. It is revealed that the moist bias is high in the mixed air while being small in tropospheric and stratospheric air, which highlights that excessive transport of moisture into the LS plays a decisive role for the formation of the moist bias. Our results suggest that a better representation of mixing processes in NWP models could lead to a reduced LS moist bias that, in turn, may lead to more accurate weather and climate forecasts. The lower-stratospheric moist bias should be borne in mind for climatological studies using reanalysis data.

Abstract:We aim at constraining the diffusive and advective transport processes in Jupiter's stratosphere. The IR spectrum recorded by Cassini/CIRS during the Jupiter flyby contains the fingerprints of several atmospheric compounds and allows probing its atmospheric composition. C2H2 and C2H6, the main compounds produced by methane photochemistry, were retrieved as a function of latitude at certain pressure levels. CIRS observations suggest a different meridional distribution for these two species, difficult to reconcile with their photochemical histories, which are thought to be coupled to the methane photolysis. While the C2H2 abundance decreases with latitude, C2H6 becomes more abundant at high latitudes. A new 2D (latitude-altitude) seasonal photochemical model is developed to study whether the addition of stratospheric transport processes, such as meridional diffusion and advection, can explain the latitudinal behavior of C2H2 and C2H6. C2H2 observations are fairly well reproduced without meridional diffusion. Adding meridional diffusion to the model provides an improved agreement with the C2H6 observations by flattening its meridional distribution, but degrades the fit to the C2H2 distribution. Meridional diffusion alone cannot produce the observed increase with latitude of C2H6. When adding advective transport between 30 mbar and 0.01 mbar, with upwelling winds at the equator and downwelling winds at high latitudes, we can reproduce the C2H6 abundance increase with latitude. However, the fit to the C2H2 distribution is degraded. The strength of the advective winds needed to reproduce the C2H6 abundances is very sensitive to the value of the meridional eddy diffusion coefficient. The coupled fate of C2H2 and C2H6 suggests that an additional process is missing in the model. Ion-neutral chemistry was not accounted for in this work and might be a good candidate to solve this issue.
Investigating Zonal Asymmetries in Stratospheric Ozone Trends From Satellite Limb Observations and a Chemical Transport Model

Abstract:Abstract This study investigates the origin of a zonal asymmetry in stratospheric ozone trends at northern high latitudes, identified in satellite limb observations over the past two decades. We use a merged data set consisting of ozone profiles retrieved at the University of Bremen from SCIAMACHY and OMPS‐LP measurements to derive ozone trends. We also use TOMCAT chemical transport model (CTM) simulations, forced by ERA5 reanalyses, to investigate the factors that drive the asymmetry observed in the long‐term changes. By studying seasonally and longitudinally resolved observation‐based ozone trends, we find, especially during spring, a well‐pronounced asymmetry at polar latitudes with values up to +6 % per decade over Greenland and −5 % per decade over western Russia. The control CTM simulation agrees well with these observed trends, whereas sensitivity simulations indicate that chemical mechanisms involved in the production and removal of ozone, or their changes, are unlikely to explain the observed behavior. The decomposition of TOMCAT ozone time series and ERA5 geopotential height into the first two wavenumber components shows a clear correlation between the two variables in the middle stratosphere and demonstrates a weakening and a shift in the wavenumber‐1 planetary wave activity over the past two decades. Finally, the analysis of the polar vortex position and strength points to a decadal oscillation with a reversal pattern at the beginning of the century. The same is found in the ozone trend asymmetry. This further stresses the link between changes in the polar vortex position and the identified ozone trend pattern.

Irradiated Atmospheres I: Heating by Vertical-Mixing Induced Energy Transport

Abstract:Observations have revealed unique temperature profiles in hot Jupiter atmospheres. We propose that the energy transport by vertical mixing could lead to such thermal features. In our new scenario, strong absorbers, TiO and VO are not necessary. Vertical mixing could be naturally excited by atmospheric circulation or internal gravity wave breaking. We perform radiative transfer calculations by taking into account the vertical mixing driven energy transport. The radiative equilibrium (RE) is replaced by radiative-mixing equilibrium (RME). We investigate how the mixing strength, $K_{\rm zz}$, affects the atmospheric temperature-pressure profile. Strong mixing can heat the lower atmosphere and cool the upper atmosphere. This effect has important effects on the atmosphere thermal features that would form without mixing. In certain circumstances, it can induce temperature inversions in scenarios where the temperature monotonically increases with increasing pressure under conditions of lower thermal band opacity. Temperature inversions show up as $K_{\rm zz}$ increases with altitude due to shear interaction with the convection layer. The atmospheric thermal structure of HD~209458b can be well fitted with $K_{\rm zz} \propto (P/1\ {\rm bar})^{-1/2}\ {\rm cm}^{2} \ {\rm s}^{-1}$. Our findings suggest vertical mixing promotes temperature inversions and lowers $K_{\rm zz}$ estimates compared to prior studies. Incorporating chemical species into vertical mixing will significantly affect the thermal profile due to their temperature sensitivity.

Signature of Vertical Mixing in Hydrogen-dominated Exoplanet Atmospheres

Abstract:Vertical mixing is a crucial disequilibrium process in exoplanet atmospheres, significantly impacting chemical abundance and observed spectra. While current state-of-the-art observations have detected its signatures, the effect of vertical mixing on atmospheric spectra varies widely based on planetary parameters. In this study, we explore the influence of disequilibrium chemistry across a parameter space that includes eddy diffusion, surface gravity, internal and equilibrium temperature, and metallicity. We also assess the effectiveness of retrieval models in constraining the eddy diffusion coefficient. By running numerous 1D chemical kinetics models, we investigate the impact of vertical mixing on the transmission spectrum. We also built a custom fast-forward disequilibrium model, which includes vertical mixing using the quenching approximation and calculates the model abundance orders of magnitude faster than the chemical kinetics model. We coupled this forward model with an open source atmospheric retrieval code and used it on the JWST simulated output data of our chemical kinetics model and retrieved eddy diffusion coefficient, internal temperature and atmospheric metallicity. We find that there is a narrow region in the parameters space in which vertical mixing has a large effect on the atmospheric transmission spectrum. In this region of the parameter space, the retrieval model can put high constraints on the transport strength and provide optimal exoplanets to study vertical mixing. Also, the NH3 abundance can be used to constrain the internal temperature for equilibrium temperature T_equi > 1400 K.

Abstract:It is shown that the equations describing chemical partitioning among Clx (HCl, Cl, ClO, ClNO3), NOt (NO, NO2, NO3, N2O5, HNO2, ClNO3) and HOx (OH, HO2) may admit multiple solutions. These solutions apply to the high latitude winter stratosphere where abrupt spatial variations may be expected for NO2, ClO and ClNO3.

Abstract:Methane (CH4) is one of the most important greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, making it worthwhile to study its temporal and vertical distributions in source areas, e.g., North China. For this purpose, a ground-based high-resolution Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), the Bruker IFS 125HR, along with an in-situ instrument, the Picarro G2301, were deployed in Xianghe County (39.8°N,117.0°E), Hebei Province, China. Data have been recorded since June 2018. For the FTIR measurements, we used two observation modes to retrieve the mole fraction of CH4: the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) method (retrieval algorithm: GGG2014), and the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC) method (retrieval algorithm: SFIT4). Combining FTIR with in-situ measurements, we found the temporal and vertical distributions of atmospheric CH4 within three vertical layers (near the ground, in the troposphere, and in the stratosphere), and throughout the whole atmosphere. Regarding the diurnal variation of CH4 near the ground, the concentration at night was higher than during the daytime. Regarding the seasonal variation, CH4 was low in spring and high in summer, for all three vertical layers. In addition, there was a peak of CH4 in winter near the ground, both in the troposphere and the whole atmosphere. We found that variation of CH4 in the tropospheric column was close to that of the in-situ measurements near the ground. Furthermore, the variations of CH4 in the stratospheric column could be influenced by vertical motions, since it was higher in summer and lower in winter.

Abstract:Large-scale isentropic mixing in the tropical lower stratosphere is investigated by computing Lagrangian trajectories using winds from the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory SKYHI general circulation model, The use of model-simulated winds avoids some problems with analyzed winds in the tropics, During the solstitial seasons a weak-mixing zone is present in the tropics in the model simulations. The weak-mixing zone is relatively isolated from the midlatitude surf zones in the northern and southern hemispheres by two mixing barriers: a strong one on the summer hemisphere side and a weak one on the winter side, The mixing barriers vary seasonally in response to seasonal variations of the tropical zonal-mean zonal flow and wave spectrum, The roles of the zonal-mean flow and of different parts of the wave spectrum in meridional transport are tested using filter techniques. Effective meridional diffusion coefficients are calculated by using filtered and antifiltered winds (i.e., winds with selected spatial scales either attenuated or amplified), The results suggest that mixing in the tropical easterlies occurs near the critical layers for the large-scale (zonal wavenumber <10) westward moving waves, which is where the waves would be expected to break, Wave spectrum analysis indicates that during the solstitial seasons there is a zone in the tropics, exactly matching the weak-mixing zone, where there is relatively little power in westward moving waves, The tropical mixing barriers are a result of the relative lack of such waves.

Abstract:Abstract We compare simulations of mesospheric tracer descent in the winter and spring of 2009 with two versions of the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM), both with specified dynamics. One is constrained with data from the Modern‐Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications which extends from 0 to 50 km; the other uses the Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System‐Advanced Level Physics High Altitude (NOGAPS‐ALPHA) which extends up to 92 km. By comparison with Solar Occultation for Ice Experiment data we show that constraining WACCM to NOGAPS‐ALPHA yields a dramatic improvement in the simulated descent of enhanced nitric oxide (NO) and very low methane (CH 4 ). We suggest that constraining to NOGAPS‐ALPHA compensates for an underestimate of nonorographic gravity wave drag in WACCM. Other possibilities, such as missing energetic particle precipitation or underestimated eddy diffusion, are less likely for the Arctic winter and spring of 2009. Impacts of Heterogeneous Chemistry on Vertical Profiles of Martian Ozone

Abstract:We show a positive vertical correlation between ozone and water ice using a vertical cross‐correlation analysis with observations from the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter's NOMAD instrument. This is particularly apparent during LS = 0° − 180°, Mars Year 35 at high southern latitudes, when the water vapour abundance is low. Ozone and water vapour are anti‐correlated on Mars; Clancy et al. (2016) also discuss the anti‐correlation between ozone and water ice. However, our simulations with gas‐phase‐only chemistry using a 1‐D model show that ozone concentration is not influenced by water ice. Heterogeneous chemistry has been proposed as a mechanism to explain the underprediction of ozone in global climate models (GCMs) through the removal of HOx. We find improving the heterogeneous chemical scheme by creating a separate tracer for the HOx adsorbed state, causes ozone abundance to increase when water ice is present (30–50 km), better matching observed trends. When water vapour abundance is high, there is no consistent vertical correlation between observed ozone and water ice and, in simulated scenarios, the heterogeneous chemistry has a minor influence on ozone. HOx, which are by‐products of water vapour, dominate ozone abundance, masking the effects of heterogeneous chemistry on ozone, and making adsorption of HOx have a negligible impact on ozone. This is consistent with gas‐phase‐only modelled ozone, showing good agreement with observations when water vapour is abundant. Overall, the inclusion of heterogeneous chemistry improves the ozone vertical structure in regions of low water vapour abundance, which may partially explain GCM ozone deficits.

Abstract:Atomic oxygen (O) in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) results from a balance between production via photo-dissociation in the lower thermosphere and chemical loss by recombination in the upper mesosphere. The transport of O downward from the lower thermosphere into the mesosphere is preferentially driven by the eddy diffusion process that results from dissipating gravity waves and instabilities. The motivation here is to probe the intra-annual variability of the eddy diffusion coefficient (k zz ) and eddy velocity in the MLT based on the climatology of the region, initially accomplished by Garcia and Solomon (1985, https://doi.org/10.1029/JD090iD02p03850). In the current study, the intra-annual cycle was divided into 26 two-week periods for each of three zones: the northern hemisphere (NH), southern hemisphere (SH), and equatorial (EQ). Both 16 years of SABER (2002-2018) and 10 years of SCIAMACHY (2002-2012) O density measurements, along with NRLMSIS® 2.0 were used for calculation of atomic oxygen eddy diffusion velocities and fluxes. Our prominent findings include a dominant annual oscillation below 87 km in the NH and SH zones, with a factor of 3-4 variation between winter and summer at 83 km, and a dominant semiannual oscillation at all altitudes in the EQ zone. The measured global average k zz at 96 km lacks the intra-annual variability of upper atmosphere density data deduced by Qian et al. (2009, https://doi.org/10.1029/2008JA013643). The very large seasonal (and hemispherical) variations in k zz and O densities are important to separate and isolate in satellite analysis and to incorporate in MLT models.
Impacts of Boundary Layer Mixing on Pollutant Vertical Profiles in the Lower Troposphere: Implications to Satellite Remote Sensing

Abstract:Mixing in the planetary boundary layer (PBL) affects vertical distributions of air tracers in the lower troposphere. An accurate representation of PBL mixing is critical for chemical-transport models (CTMs) for applications sensitive to simulations of the vertical profiles of tracers. The full mixing assumption in the widely used global CTM GEOS-Chem has recently been supplemented with a non-local PBL scheme. This study analyzes the impact of the non-local scheme on model representation of PBL mixing, consequences for simulations of vertical profiles of air tracers and surface air pollution, and implications for model applications to the interpretation of data retrieved from satellite remote sensing. The non-local scheme significantly improves simulations of the vertical distributions for NO2 and O-3, as evaluated using aircraft measurements in summer 2004. It also reduces model biases over the U.S. by more than 10 ppb for surface ozone concentrations at night and by 2-5 ppb for peak ozone in the afternoon, as evaluated using ground observations. The application to inverse modeling of anthropogenic NOx emissions for East China using satellite retrievals of NO2 from OMI and GOME-2 suggests that the full mixing assumption results in 3-14% differences in top-down emission budgets as compared to the non-local scheme. The top-down estimate combining the non-local scheme and the Lin et al. inverse modeling approach suggests a magnitude of 6.6 TgN yr(-1) for emissions of NOx over East China in July 2008 and 8.0 TgN yr(-1) for January 2009, with the magnitude and seasonality in good agreement with bottom-up estimates. Abstract:Abstract. Different entrainment-mixing processes of turbulence are crucial to processes related to clouds; however, only a few qualitative studies have been concentrated on the vertical distributions of entrainment-mixing mechanisms with low vertical resolutions. To quantitatively study vertical profiles of entrainment-mixing mechanisms with a high resolution, the stratiform clouds observed in the Physics of Stratocumulus Top (POST) project are examined. The unique sawtooth flight pattern allows for an examination of the vertical distributions of entrainment-mixing mechanisms with a 5 m vertical resolution. Relative standard deviation of volume mean radius divided by relative standard deviation of liquid water content is introduced to be a new estimation of microphysical homogeneous mixing degree, to overcome difficulties of determining the adiabatic microphysical properties required in existing measures. The vertical profile of this new measure indicates that entrainment-mixing mechanisms become more homogeneous with decreasing altitudes and are consistent with the dynamical measures of Damköhler number and transition scale number. Further analysis shows that the vertical variation of entrainment-mixing mechanisms with decreasing altitudes is due to the increases of turbulent dissipation rate in cloud and relative humidity in droplet-free air and the decrease of size of droplet-free air. The results offer insights into the theoretical understanding and parameterizations of vertical variation of entrainment-mixing mechanisms.
