The Relationship between Linguistics and Translation Studies as Exemplified by Eugene Nida’s Translation Thought

Abstract:The translation thought and theory of Eugene Nida have occupied an important position in modern Western translation studies. As one of the most important figures of the school “Science of Translation”, Nida tries to apply modern linguistic theories to the construction of translation theory. Based on such concepts as kernel sentences and transformations in Transformational-Generative Grammar, Nida created the theory of back-transformation, which is well-known in the circle of translation studies. In surveying Nida’s translation thought, we may draw the conclusion that linguistic theories and research methods play an important role in translation studies.
