Abstract:The crystal structure of the title compound, [Co(C4H2O4)( C7H6N2)(3)](n), consists of polymeric chains of the Co-II complex. Two maleate dianions and three benzimidazole ligands coordinate to the Co-II atom with a distorted octahedral geometry. The maleate dianions bridge neighbouring Co-II atoms via both terminal carboxylic acid groups, one of which is monodentate and the other bidentate, to form a helical structure of alternating maleate dianions and Co-II atoms, with a pitch height of 9.2667 (17) Angstrom. The absolute structure has been determined, and the crystal contains only right-handed helices. Intrahelical N-H..O hydrogen bonds stabilize the helical structure, while interhelical N-H...O hydrogen bonds link neighbouring helices to form the supramolecular structure.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials offer a promising platform for nanoscale spintronics and for exploration of novel physical phenomena. Here, we predict a diverse range of magnetic orders in cobalt-based 2D single septuple layers CoX2Y4, namely, CoBi2Te4, CoBi2Se2Te2, CoBi2Se4, and CoSb2Te4. Notably, CoBi2Te4 presents intrinsic non-collinear antiferromagnetism (AFM), while the others display collinear AFM. The emergence of AFM in all CoX2Y4 materials is attributed to the antiferromagnetic 90 degrees Co-Te(Se)-Co superexchange coupling. The origin of non-collinear/collinear orders lies in competing Heisenberg exchange interactions within the Co triangular lattice. A pivotal factor governing the non-collinear order of CoBi2Te4 is the vanishingly small ratio of exchange coupling between next-nearest neighbour Co and the nearest neighbour Co (J(2)/J(1) similar to 0.01). Furthermore, our investigation into strain effects on CoX2Y4 lattices demonstrates the tunability of the magnetic state of CoSb2Te4 from collinear to non-collinear. Our prediction of the unique non-collinear AFM in 2D suggests the potential for observing extraordinary magnetic phenomena in 2D, including non-collinear scattering and magnetic domain walls.

Abstract:A pair of enantiomerically homochiral {(Co6Co4III)-Co-II} clusters featuring a butterfly-like structure, [(Co6Co4III)-Co-II(mu(3)-OH)(mu(3)-X)(S-pa)(4)(pdm)(6)(pdmH) (2)](ClO4)(4) center dot 3.5H(2)O (S-1) and [(Co6Co4III)-Co-II(mu(3)-OH)(mu(3)-X)(R-pa)(4)(pdm) (6)(pdmH)(2)](ClO4)(4) center dot 3.5H(2)O (R-1) (X = OH or OMe, S- or R-paH = S-or R-phenylalaninol and pdmH(2) = pyridine-2,6-diyldimethanol), have been synthesized and structurally characterized. They are the second largest homochiral Co clusters constructed by chiral ligands. They are also the first example of high-nuclearity homochiral Co clusters having both slow magnetic relaxation behaviour and ferroelectric property.
Field Tunable Magnetic Transitions of CsCo2(MoO4)2(OH): A Triangular Chain Structure with a Frustrated Geometry

Abstract:Identifying and characterizing new magnetic systems with Co2+ ions can enhance our understanding of quantum behavior since Co2+ can host a pseudospin-1/2 magnetic ground state. Understanding the magnetic ground state and the phase diagrams of such systems are central to the development of new theoretical models to described emergent quantum properties of complex magnetic systems. The sawtooth chain compound, CsCo2MoO4_2OH, is one such complex magnetic system and here, we present a comprehensive series of magnetic and neutron scattering measurements to determine its magnetic phase diagram. The magnetic properties of CsCo2MoO4_2OH exhibit a strong coupling to the crystal lattice and its magnetic ground state can be easily manipulated by applied magnetic fields. There are two unique Co2+ ions, base and vertex, with Jbb and Jbv magnetic exchange. The magnetism is highly anisotropic with the b-axis (chain) along the easy axis and the material orders antiferromagnetically at TN = 5 K. The zero field antiferromagnetic phase contains vertex magnetic vectors Co1 aligned parallel to the b-axis, while the base vectors Co2 are canted by 34 and aligned in an opposite direction to the vertex vectors. The spins in parallel adjacent chains align in opposite directions, creating an overall antiferromagnetic structure. At a 3 kOe applied magnetic field, adjacent chains flip by 180{\deg} to generate a ferrimagnetic phase. An increase in field gradually induces the Co(1) moment to rotate along the b-axis and align in the same direction with Co2 generating a ferromagnetic structure. Our results demonstrate that the CsCo2MoO4_2OH is a promising candidate to study new physics associated with sawtooth chain magnetism.

Abstract:Solvothermal synthesis of FeCl2 center dot 4H(2)O and H2C2O4 center dot 2H(2)O in methanol at 120 degrees C yielded yellow plate-like crystals of [Fe(C2O4)(CH3OH)](n). Each iron atom is in a distorted octahedral environment, being bonded to four oxygen atoms from two bisbidentate oxalate anions, one O atom of a chelating oxalate anion and one O atom from a methanol molecule as an oxalate group bridging ligand in a five-coordination mode. The neutral layer of [Fe(C2O4)(CH3OH)](n) with a [4,4] net along the ac plane. There is no interaction between layers. A long range magnetic ordering with spin canting at T-N approximate to 23 K was observed and confirmed by AC susceptibility measurements.

Abstract:This paper describes the structure and magnetic properties of a novel cobalt 1-aminoethylidenediphosphonate compound, namely Co-3{CH3C(NH3)(PO3H)(PO3)}(2){CH3C(NH3)(PO3H)(2)}(2)(H2O)(4)(.)2H(2)O (1). The structure contains a trimer unit of Co-3{CH3C(NH3)(PO3H)(PO3)}(2) in which two equivalent phosphonate ligands chelate and bridge the three cobalt ions. Each trimer unit is further linked to its four equivalent neighbors through corner-sharing of CoO6 octahedra and CPO3 tetrahedra, forming a two-dimensional layer in the be-plane which contains 12-membered rings. These layers are connected to each other by extensive hydrogen bonds. Magnetic studies show that weak antiferromagnetic interactions are mediated between the cobalt ions. Abstract:Starting from the pentagonal bipyramidal single-ion magnet [Co(tdmmb)(H2O)(2)][BF4](2) and a series of linear bridging ligands of different lengths, three new cobalt(II) one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymers, [Co(tdmmb)(pyz)][BF4](2)center dot CH3CN center dot H2O (1), [Co(tdmmb)(apy)][BF4](2)center dot 2CH(3)CN (2), and [Co(tdmmb)(bpe)][BF4](2)center dot 3CH(3)CN (3) (tdmmb = 1,3,10,12-tetramethyl-1,2,11,12-tetra-aza[3](2,6) pyridino[3](2,9)-1,10-phenanthrolinophan-2,10-diene) (pyz = pyrazine) (apy = 4-aminopyridine) (bpe = 1,2-di(4-pyridyl) ethane)), have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. Symmetric ligands pyz and bpe result in the nearly linear chains in 1 and 3, while the asymmetric ligand apy leads to the zig-zag chain in 2. As the length of the ligands increases, the intrachain Co center dot center dot center dot Co distance also increases, i.e. 7.56, 7.70, and 13.85 angstrom for 1-3, respectively. Magnetic investigation revealed the gradual decrease in the magnetic interactions between the Co2+ ions from 1 to 3, along with the increase in the intrachain Co-Co distances. Due to the existence of the weak antiferromagnetic (AF) interaction, the SIM behavior of the starting material is surpressed in compounds 1 and 2, and they show a simple paramagnetic behavior. While for 3, field-induced slow magnetic relaxation was observed at a low temperature with an energy barrier of U-eff = 19 K. This observation suggests that the magnetic interaction between the Co2+ centers in 3 is negligible, consistent with the very long Co-Co distance in 3. These 1D compounds are rare chain compounds composed of metal centers with a nearly D-5h symmetry. Notably, compound 3 is the second example of a 1D Co(II) chain compound displaying a SIM behaviour. These studies illustrated that the magnetic interaction between the SIMs can be used to tune slow magnetic relaxation.
Zero-field magnetic structure and metamagnetic phase transitions of the cobalt chain compound Li$_2$CoCl$_4$

Abstract:Exploring the uncharacterized magnetic phases of Co$^{2+}$ chain compounds is critical for finding new low-dimensional magnets hosting quantized excitations. We map the unexplored magnetic phases of the Co$^{2+}$ chain compound Li$_2$CoCl$_4$. Magnetometry reveals magnetic ordering below 7 K with a metamagnetic transition near 16.5 kOe and a gradual transition to a field-aligned paramagnetic state above 31 kOe. Curie-Weiss fits to the high temperature susceptibility reveal a high-spin (spin-$\frac{3}{2}$) state for cobalt. Heat capacity data, though, give a magnetic entropy change of 5.46 J/mol, consistent with cobalt effective spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ systems. To characterize the zero-field antiferromagnetic ordering, we separately calculated the energy of proposed magnetic structures with density functional theory and collected 3.5 K neutron diffraction data, finding that Li$_2$CoCl$_4$ has ferromagnetic chains with antiferromagnetic interactions between them. Increasing field rotates these spin chains, producing the antiferromagnetic to intermediate to paramagnetic transition sequence.

Abstract:A classical-quantum chain composed of regularly alternating Ising and Heisenberg spins is rigorously solved by considering two distinct local anisotropy axes of the Ising spins. The ground-state phase diagram and magnetization curves are examined depending on a spatial orientation of the applied magnetic field. The phase diagram totally consists of four distinct phases and a few macroscopically degenerate points, where an outstanding coexistence of perfect order and complete disorder occurs within the so-called 'half-fire, half-ice' state. The zero-temperature magnetization curves generally exhibit a smooth dependence on a magnetic field owing to a canting angle between two coplanar anisotropy axes of the Ising spins, which enforces a misalignment of the magnetization vector from a direction of the applied magnetic field. It is evidenced that the investigated spin-chain model reproduces magnetic features of the heterobimetallic coordination compound Dy(NO)$_{3}$(DMSO)$_{2}$Cu(opba)(DMSO)$_{2}$ (DMSO=dimethylsulfoxide, opba=orthophenylenebisoxamato). The high-field magnetization data reported for the powder sample of this polymeric coordination compound generally display a substantial smoothing on account of a powder averaging.
Stabilization of Short- and Long-Range Magnetic Ordering through the Cooperative Effect of 1D [CuO4]∞ Chains and [CuO2X2] Quadrilateral in Quasi-1D Spin-1/2 Systems

Abstract:Quasi-1D chain antiferromagnets with reduced structural dimensionality are a rich playground for investigating novel quantum phenomena. We report the synthesis, crystal structure, and magnetism of two novel quasi-1D antiferromagnets, β-PbCu2(TeO3)2Cl2 (I) and PbCu2(TeO3)2Br2 (II). Their magnetic frameworks are constructed via Cu-based quasi-1D [Cu(2)O4]∞ zigzag chains with square-planar [Cu(1)O2X2] (X=Cl or Br) separated among 1D chains. Specific heat measurements show λ peaks at ~9 K and ~19 K for I and II, respectively. Moreover, both broad maximums (χmax=90 K for I and 80 K for II) and small kinks (TN≈9 K for I and 19 K for II) have been observed in magnetic susceptibility measurements of I and II. Bonner-Fisher model fitting, and theoretical analyses were performed to evaluate the magnetic exchange interactions. Our experimental and theoretical results and structure-properties relationship analysis reveal the coexistence of short- and long-range magnetic ordering from the cooperative effect of 1D [CuO4]∞ chains and [CuO2X2] quadrilateral.

Abstract:The magnetic structure of K2Co3(MoO4)3(OH)2 is studied in detail. The material has a half-sawtooth one-dimensional (1-D) structure containing two unique Co2+ ions, one in the chain backbone and one on the apex of the sawtooth creating a series of isosceles triangles along the b-axis. These triangles can be a source of magnetic frustration. The ability to grow large single crystals enables detailed magnetic measurements with the crystals oriented in a magnetic field along the respective axes. It has a Curie-Weiss temperature θCW of 5.3(2) K with an effective magnetic moment of 4.8(3) μB/Co. The material is highly anisotropic with a sharp antiferromagnetic ordering transition at 7 K with a metamagnetic transition at 2 kOe. Neutron diffraction was used to determine the magnetic structure and revealed a magnetic structure with canted spins along the backbone of the chain while spins along the sawtooth caps maintained a colinear orientation, arranging antiferromagnetically relative to the backbone spins. The parallel chains arrange antiferromagnetically relative to each other along the c-axis and ferromagnetically along the a- axis.

Abstract:Five Co-II complexes based on H3L1 and H3L2, namely, [Co-3(L-1)(2)(4,4'-bipy)(H2O)(3)](n) (1), [Co-3(L-1)(2)(4,4'-bipy)(3)(H2O)(4)](n) (2), {[Co-2(Li)(4,4'-bibp)(mu(3)-OH)(H2O)]center dot H2O}(n) (3), {[CO3(L-2)(2)(dib)(3)]center dot 2H(2)O}(n) (4), and [CO3(L-2)(2)(4,4'-bibp)(3)](n) (5) [(H3L1 = 4-[(3-carboxynaphthalen-2-yl)oxy]phthalic acid, H3L2 = 3-[(3-carboxynaphthalen-2-yl)oxy]phthalic acid, 4,4'-bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine, cub = 1,4-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl) benzene, and 4,4'-bibp = 4,4'-bis(imidazol)biphenyl] have been synthesized by solvothermal reactions. Complex 1 displays a (4,4,6) connected topology with a Schlafli symbol of (4.10(4).12)(4(11).6(4))(4(8).6)(2,) and the two-dimensional (2D) structure was assembled to form a three-dimensional (3D) framework by C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions of internaphthalene rings, showing the dominant antiferromagnetic exchanges in a triangular {Co3} cluster. Complex 2 presents a 2D (3,4,4)-connected network with a Schlafli symbol of (5.6(2))(2)(5(2).6(3).7)(2)(5(4).8(2)) and weakly antiferromagnetic behavior. Complex 3 features a novel (4,4,8)-connected topology with a Schlafli symbol of (3(2).4.5(2).6)(2)(3(2).4(2).5(2))(2)(3(4).4(6).5(8).6(7).7(2).8). In addition, complex 3 based on a parallelogram-shaped [Co-4(mu(3)-OH)(2)](6) secondary building unit provides antiferromagnetic interactions mediated by mu(3)-OH and syn-syn-COO- groups. The driving forces in 3D supramolecular frameworks are C-H center dot center dot center dot O, C-H center dot center dot center dot pi, and pi center dot center dot center dot pi stacking interactions for 2-3. Complexes 4-5 have an identical (4,4,5)-connected 2D network with a Schlafli symbol of (4.6(4).8)(4(2).6(7).8)(2)(4(4).6(2))(2). Additionally, the C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds between naphthalene rings and uncoordinated carboxy oxygen atoms extend 2D networks into 3D supramolecular frameworks. Magnetic investigations reveal that 4 and 5 exhibit antiferromagnetic interactions in the linear {Co3} unit.

Abstract:In recent years, research on spin ordering phenomena has broadened to include intermolecular exchange interactions in organic–inorganic crystals and goes beyond the traditional focus on interatomic interactions. However, a crystallized framework used for stabilizing parallel spin alignment through an ordered lattice is indispensable to ferromagnetism. Here we demonstrate room-temperature ferromagnetic order in two-dimensional confined molecule-based monolayers. The confinement effect of the van der Waals interlayer space enables cobaltocene molecules to self-assemble into a monolayer with a honeycomb-like configuration. The spontaneous uniform spin orientation—ferromagnetic coupling—is established by an intermolecular vibronic superexchange interaction, involving a cooperative dynamic Jahn–Teller effect in the confined cobaltocene monolayer. The molecular cobaltocene monolayers exhibit a ferromagnetic transition temperature above room temperature and have a large saturation magnetization.

Abstract:An oxalato-based cage compound Mn(C2O4)(H2O)0.25 was obtained using a solvothermal method. Mn is pentagonal bipyramidal coordinated with O from oxalato with three-atom and one-atom bridges. There are hydrogen bonds between the framework and clathrated H2O. A 3D long-range magnetic ordering was observed at 10.9 K.
Double-$Q$ spin chirality stripes in the anomalous Hall antiferromagnet CoNb$_3$S$_6$

Abstract:The metallic antiferromagnet CoNb$_3$S$_6$ exhibits a giant anomalous Hall effect (AHE) that cannot be explained by a collinear Néel order on intercalated Co ions. Thus, a noncoplanar structure is expected. We carried out resonant elastic x-ray scattering (REXS) to reexamine the magnetic structure of CoNb$_3$S$_6$ and found a double-$Q$ ($2Q$) order with a $(\frac{1}{2}00)$ commensurate component and a long-wavelength modulation. Circular dichroism and linear polarization analysis reveal that the commensurate components on the two Co sites are noncollinear and the modulation is helical. The resulting magnetic structure has a staggered scalar spin chirality forming a stripe pattern in real space. Furthermore, we found that the helical modulation wavevector exhibits a sample dependence and develops a low-symmetry domain structure. We propose that quenched-in lattice strain controls the helical domain structure, accounting for much of the sample dependence. These results provide insight into the mechanism of the AHE in CoNb$_3$S$_6$ and identifies potential routes for controlling the Hall response and realizing other unconventional electronic phenomena in metallic antiferromagnets.

Abstract:Exploration of new spin systems with low-dimensional subunits have been of great interest in the past decades due to their interesting physical properties and potential applications in molecular spintronics. Two inorganic supramolecular complexes, (Hg 3 S 2 )(FeCl 4 ) and (Hg 3 S 2 )(CoCl 4 ), with trigonally aligned 1-D infinite magnetic ∞ 1 (FeCl 4 ) 2− or ∞ 1 (CoCl 4 ) 2− chains have been prepared by solid-state reactions. They exhibit 3-D long-range spin order with strong field dependence and field induced metamagnetic behavior. The intrachain and interchain magnetic coupling constants were estimated by DFT+ U and DFT+ U +SOC calculations and the both complexes can be regarded as partially frustrated spin systems. The spin Hamiltonian was constructed, the ground state is proposed to be incommensurate spiral spin order, which differs from the commensurate 120° spin structure ground state of fully frustrated trigonal case by a little canted angle. This study shows that cooperative magnetic ordering induced by geometric frustration can be realized in inorganic supramolecular systems assembled by weak van der Waals’ interactions.

Abstract:We present electronic structure calculations for the one-dimensional magnetic chain compounds Ca3CoRhO6 and Ca3FeRhO6. The calculations are based on density functional theory and the local density approximation. We use the augmented spherical wave (ASW) method. The observed alternation of low- and high-spin states along the Co–Rh and Fe–Rh chains is related to differences in the oxygen coordination of the transition metal sites. Due to strong hybridization the O 2p states are polarized, giving rise to extended localized magnetic moments centered at the high-spin sites. Strong metal–metal overlap along the chains leads to a substantial contribution of the low-spin Rh 4d3z2−r2 orbitals to the exchange coupling of the extended moments. Interestingly, this mechanism holds for both compounds, even though the coupling is ferromagnetic for cobalt and antiferromagnetic for the iron compound. However, our results allow to understand the different types of coupling from the filling dependence of the electronic properties.

Abstract:Carbon-based nanostructures possessing {\pi}-electron magnetism have attracted tremendous interest due to their great potential for nano spintronics. In particular, quantum chains with magnetic molecular units synthesized by on-surface reactions provide an ideal playground for investigating magnetic exchange interactions between localized spin components. Here, we present an extensive study of antiferromagnetic nanographene chains with the diazahexabenzocoronene molecule as the repeating unit. A combination of bond-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy, density functional theory and quantum spin models revealed their detailed structures and electronic and magnetic properties. We found that the antiferromagnetic chains host a collective state featuring gapped excitations for an even number of repeating units and one featuring a Kondo excitation for an odd number. Comparing with exact many-body quantum spin models, our molecular chains provide the realization of an entangled quantum Heisenberg model. Coupled with the tunability of the molecular building blocks, these systems can act as an ideal platform for the experimental realization of topological spin lattices.
