Abstract:Contradictory assessments of the significance of Althusser's life and thought are mirrored by his own uneasy and inconsistent attempts at self-understanding in the posthumous autobiographies Les Faits and L'Avenir dure longtemps . In fact Althusser was concerned with the problems of reading and meaning throughout his career. In Lire le Capital he attributes to Marx a practice of reading which involves exploring the blanks or lapses of a precursor text. This establishes the reader as an active participant in the meaning of a text, while also making reading a potentially endless process. Althusser's writings on psychoanalysis suggest an analogy to this relationship between text and reader in the relationship between analyst and analys and, as each offers the other a glimpse of a truth which neither actually possesses. The disturbed textuality of Althusser's later writing enacts this simultaneous promise and disturbance of meaning. In particular, in his autobiographical writings he attempts a self-reading which aims to achieve a level of understanding capable of excluding all other perspectives, but which remains open to later rereading and revision; moreover, the precariousness of meaning emerges in Althusser's later thought and writing as a source of hope that everything is not set out in advance, and that the worst is not certain however probable it might seem.
