Abstract:Using the inflation-deflation symmetry, we have developed a new real-space decimation approach to study the electronic properties of one-dimensional quasiperiodic lattices. The key result is the construction of a compact renormalization group that allows simple calculation of the average Green's function and the average density of states to any degree. The Fibonacci and the generalized Fibonacci lattices are used to demonstrate the method. Numerical results for the average density of states of these lattices show a good agreement with the results obtained by other methods. This confirms the validity and the efficiency of the approach.

Abstract:We present an exact renormalization-group approach to study the local phonon properties of the double-atom generalized Fibonacci systems in which the masses and spring constants are all associated with the aperiodic sequences constructed by the inflation rule: {A, B}→{An Bm, A}.n(m+1) basic transformations and 2n(n+m−1)+1 basic decimations are introduced. By applying the combinations of derived transformations and decimations, we can determine exactly the renormalized local environment, up to infinite order, of any given site in the double-atom systems. Both the single-atom and double-atom phonon models are employed, and the local density of states in several sites of some generalized Fibonacci systems are numerically calculated.

Abstract:A new exact real-space renormalization group approach is presented for the local phonon properties of any given site in an infinite Fibonacci chain. It is found that the local phonon densities of states for different sites are different from each other, although they have the same structure. Results also suggest that the local phonon spectrum is a Cantor set.

Abstract:We study the electronic properties of the generalized Fibonacci lattices generated by the inflation rule (A, B) --> (AB(n), A) with n > 1. A unified real-space renormalization-group scheme is presented for calculating the exact local Green's function at any given site. Analysis suggests that there are extended states in these lattices. Furthermore, the appearance of the extended states and the smoothness of the local density of states depends on the system parameters, implying that these exists a state transition phenomenon similar to that of the incommensurate Harper's model.

Abstract:We present a real-space renormalization-group approach to calculate the electronic average Green functions of one-dimensional aperiodic lattices. The characteristic of this approach is that it is only concerned with the global symmetry of the lattice under the renormalization-group transformation and the average Green function can be calculated in a simple manner to any degree of accuracy. The Thue-Morse and the Fibonacci lattices are studied in detail to illustrate the method.

Abstract:A real-space renormalization group (RSRG) scheme is developed to calculate the local Green's functions for electrons in two-dimensional quasi-crystals. The RSRG transformations are derived in terms of the inflation rule of the quasi-crystals. The local electronic densities of states at some key sites are presented, which match the numerical results obtained by other groups for the global electronic energy spectra of the quasi-crystals.

Abstract:A real-space renormalization-group approach for calculating the exact electronic Green function of an infinite Thue-Morse chain is presented. This approach is based on a renormalization transformation introduced according to the self-similar structure of the chain and the recursion relations for the matrix elements of the Green function. Numerical results for the local density of states for the off-diagonal model show the existence of the extended states.

The derived renormalization group consists of 2n(n+m-1)+1 basic renormalization-group transformations. The off-diagonal model is employed, and the local electronic densities of states at several sites are numerically calculated for some generalized Fibonacci lattices.

Abstract:Using the extended real-space renormalizaation-group approach, we study the local electr-onic properties of a class of one-dimensional quasicrystals (the generalized Fibonacci chains) in the framework of tight-binding model. These quasiperiodic systems are termed the An chains, which are associated with the sequences generated by the inflation rule (A, B)→(AnB, A). We introduce 2n2+1 transformations for calculating the local electronic Green's function and the local electronic density of state at any site in any one of An chains for the diagonal, offdiago-nal and combined models. It is shown that this approach is effective and the local electronic density of states is critical, just as that of Fibonacci quasicrystal.

Abstract:Quantum Ising models in transverse magnetic fields are studied for a class of one-dimensional quasiperiodic lattices (the generalized Fibonacci lattices). A unified trace map is obtained, which can be used to determine the energy spectra of quantum Ising models on generalized Fibonacci lattices. It is shown that the energy spectra are Cantor-like and the critical lines for the quasiperiodic Ising models are obtained.

Abstract:AbstractA global cut‐and‐project method is developed. By this technique, the construction is discussed of aperiodic lattices including both, generalized Fibonacci lattices and octagonal, decagonal, and dodecagonal quasilattices. Diffraction patterns with 8‐, 10‐, and 12‐fold symmetries are simulated, which agree well with the experimental results. A modulation is introduced to explain the two alternating sets of periodic layers along the 10‐fold axis in the diffraction pattern of decagonal quasicrystal.

Abstract:We present a renormalization-group decimation approach for studying the local electronic properties at any site of a two-dimensional Fibonacci quasilattice. The numerical results on the local density of states at several sites display the five-subband structure of the energy spectrum. This result and the distributions of the local density of states are in good agreement with our previous work [Fu et al., Phys. Rev. B 43, 10 808 (1991)].

Abstract:We develop a renormalization group (RG) description of the localization properties of onedimensional (1D) quasiperiodic lattice models. The RG flow is induced by increasing the unit cell of subsequent commensurate approximants. Phases of quasiperiodic systems are characterized by RG fixed points associated with renormalized single-band models. We identify fixed-points that include many previously reported exactly solvable quasiperiodic models. By classifying relevant and irrelevant perturbations, we show that phase boundaries of more generic models can be determined with exponential accuracy in the approximant's unit cell size, and in some cases analytically. Our findings provide a unified understanding of widely different classes of 1D quasiperiodic systems.

Abstract:A numerical method with renormalization group transformation is used to study the scaling properties of phonon spectrum and its relevant state of one-dimensional quasiperiodic lattice which is constructed by reduced map. We find that the phonon spectrum at finite gaps' edges in the binary chain Fibonacci model is a Cantor-like set spectrum. The spectrum is singularly continuous and the state is a critical state.

Abstract:The half-space Green’s functions of phonon and phason fields in the constrained cubic quasicrystals are derived for various boundary conditions. The analytical solutions of the generalized Lorentz problem, Mindlin problem, and two mixed boundary problems, are directly derived by using the Phan-Thien method, the general solutions, and infinite-space Green’s functions. Unique phenomena are observed in stress fields, which show their significant effect on mechanical response of quasicrystals by the phonon and phason force. Furthermore, we observe, without considering the phason force, an interesting distinction between quasicrystals and traditional isotropic media in the Lorentz problem. We further notice that the unique stress distribution is induced by the phonon force rather than by the phason force. Because the phonon force is much more convenient to be applied than the phason force in experiments, this result provides us an efficient channel to study quasicrystals involving the phonon force only, and then to verify the current linear elasticity of quasicrystals.

Abstract:Electronic properties of the generalized Fibonacci lattices are studied using the dynamical system technique, for which the off-diagonal tight-binding model is employed. The matrix and trace maps are obtained and investigated in a unified way. It is found that the energy spectra are Cantor-like and the wavefunctions are critical at many energies. For some systems, it is also shown that there are extended and localized wavefunctions. In addition, according to the degree of spatial extension or localization, two other types of wavefunctions are further distinguished, of which one has the tendency to be extended and the other has the tendency to be localized.

Abstract:This paper deals with the combination of point phonon and phason forces applied in the interior of infinite planes and half-planes of 1D quasicrystal bi-materials. Based on the general solution of quasicrystals, a series of displacement functions are adopted to obtain Green’s functions for infinite planes and bi-material planes composed of two half-planes in the closed form, when the two half-planes are supposed to be ideally bonded or to be in smooth contact. Since the physical quantities can be readily calculated without the need of performing any transform operations, Green’s functions are very convenient to be used in the study of point defects and inhomogeneities in the quasicrystal materials.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish quantitative Green's function estimates for some higher dimensional lattice quasi-periodic (QP) Schrödinger operators. The resonances in the estimates can be described via a pair of symmetric zeros of certain functions and the estimates apply to the sub-exponential type non-resonant conditions. As the application of quantitative Green's function estimates, we prove both the arithmetic version of Anderson localization and the $(\frac 12-)$-Hölder continuity of the integrated density of states (IDS) for such QP Schrödinger operators. This gives an affirmative answer to Bourgain's problem in\cite{Bou00}.

Abstract:We propose a variational approach to study renormalized phonons in momentum-conserving nonlinear lattices with either symmetric or asymmetric potentials. To investigate the influence of pressure for phonon properties, we derive an inequality which provides both the lower and upper bound of the Gibbs free energy as the associated variational principle. This inequality is a direct extension to the Gibbs-Bogoliubov inequality. Taking the symmetry effect into account, the reference system for the variational approach is chosen to be harmonic with an asymmetric quadratic potential which contains variational parameters. We demonstrate the power of this approach by applying it to one-dimensional nonlinear lattices with a symmetric or asymmetric Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-type potential. For a system with a symmetric potential and zero pressure, we recover existing results. For other systems which are beyond the scope of existing theories, including those having symmetric potential and pressure and those having the asymmetric potential with or without pressure, we also obtain accurate sound velocity.
