Abstract:Cangyuan was a private garden of a famous book collector in Beijing. Based on the author's visiting and documents, the layout of this garden, which has been drastically destroyed since 1950's, is tried to be restored and the characters of its design are analyzed.

Abstract:The garden of Guichun's residence was a private garden created of an official in late Qing Dynasty, located in the Xixiejie (Western Lean Street) in Beijing and destroyed in 1970's. Constructed on an irregular site, the garden was different from most of other private ones because of its flexible layout which was similar with Southern gardens. There was a central pool in the court surrounded by verandas with plat roofs. As an excellent example, it also consisted of fine buildings and varied plants. Based on the materials, the author tries to draw its restoration plan and explore its history and gardening characteristics.

Abstract:The Garden of Li's Residence in Beijing is a private garden reconstructed during the reign of the Republic of China. This garden is a good example of the new style transformed from the traditional style for its rational layout, unique carved buildings, refined rockeries and river. Based on survey, the author tries to study and analyze the characters of its design.

Abstract:Yuyuan, a large private garden of a senior official in Qing Dynasty, is located at the east district in Beijing. It consisted of a small amount of buildings at south-east and a large area of vacant ground at west, which presented the characteristics of a literati garden. An octagonal pavilion with the Western style acted as a visitor's platform. The rockeries was made of soil and embellished with several blue stones. A long pool at eastern direct drew water from the cistern on the hill. The trees and flowers showed varied landscapes. Based on the materials and survey, the author tries to explore its history and gardening characteristics.

Abstract:As one of the most important parts of the system of Chinese classic gardens,the private gardens of Beijing flourished in Qing Dynasty including three climaxes of garden construction with a great deal of famous landscapes.Base on numerous materials and surveys,the author tries to explore the develop process of the private gardens of Beijing in Qing Dynasty,and analyze the typical examples and their site selections,buildings,rockeries, water landscapes and plants,as well as summarize the style characters in different periods.

Abstract:Mr.Hao Shengtang,an industrialist of the period of the Republic of China,had a residence garden in Xicheng District of Beijing,which was built in the 1920s and survives today.As an important example of the private gardens in Beijing,the garden consisted of the east courtyard with the rockery of lake stones in front of the hall,and the west courtyard with the hall,pavilion,and the side house mixing Western style.The rockery in the west courtyard was piled up by the lake stones,cyan stones and soil,under which a pool took a wondering course.Many precious gardening materials such as stones,steles,railings,flowerpots and stone lions were carried from the ruins of Yuanmingyuan.Based on interview and survey,the author tries to explore its history and gardening characteristics.

Abstract:Buildings are important contents in the private gardens in Beijing, with various forms including hall, study, pavilion, tower, gaily-painted pleasure-boat, theatre, altar and shrine and so on. The gardens have facilities like door, corridor, bridge, and wall of various forms. All of them were constructed according to the north administrational style of architecture, so that these gardens are widely different from the ones in South China in their fine materials, elegant shape, rich colors, and well integration with plants. Based on a lot of examples, the characters of the buildings in the private gardens in Beijing are analyzed, and their general style is explored and summarized.

Abstract:Xiao Garden, a famous garden of Yangzhou in 18th century, was originally a nursery for Chinese herbaceous peony that had been famous since 10th century. The land of the nursery was bought by Chen Meng-xing, a secluded member of Imperial Academy in 1716. Chen transformed the nursery into a private garden for clan use. The private garden was then turned into one of the three famous places for literati' gathering in Yangzhou. In the middle of 18th century, the name of Xiao Garden was changed to ‘Xiao-yuan-hua-rui’. During that time, the garden was a key place along the landscape between Hong Bridge and Ping-shan Hall. The change of Xiao Garden from an economic nursery to an aesthetic private garden, such a process appears ubiquitous in the transformation of gardens of Jiang-nan. The rapid change from a private garden for clan to a scenic spot opening to city residents, however, occurred only in Yang-zhou of the middle of 18th century. How was a private garden built, transformed and integrated? What was transformed in its spatial structure? Whether the historical changes to Xiao Garden present any rules? Yet, the historical Xiao Garden no longer exists. This article integrates historical texts and pictorial records to represent the spatial structure of Xiao Garden in different periods. It hopes to identify the inherent rules of landscaping activities that transformed Xiao Garden.

Abstract:The garden of Taobeile, a noble of Qing Dynasty, is located in the Shishahai area in Beijing. As a garden short of water, it consists of special rockeries and varied plants. The plan is dominated by the axes and the buildings are disposed to surround a specious space. Furthermore, the gardening methods of European style were adopted in the whole layout, inner ornaments and fountain sculpture and combined with Chinese style. Based on the materials and survey, its history and gardening characteristics is explored.

Abstract:As the main methods of creation of artistic conception, the inscribed boards and couplets were used frequently in the private gardens in Beijing. Numerous excellent examples described vividly the landscapes and the most of them were introduced from the classical poems and literary quotations, as well as some were written by the emperors and queen mothers. Based on lots of firsthand materials, the author tries to study and analyze the most important inscribed boards and couplets in the private gardens of Beijing, and make further exploration of their cultural connotation and the influence to garden design.

Abstract:Chengzeyuan, a garden of Princess Shou'en in Qing Dynasty, is located in the western suburb of Beijing, which was translated from a private garden of an officer. The garden brings straightforwardly the Wanquan River into the scope and leads to a beautiful landscape with two long rivers traversing from west to east and dividing the whole area into different parts such as courtyards, land and island. As a noble garden with the superb style, it is dominated by a central axis. Based on the materials and survey, the evolutionary history and the characters of garden design are explored.

Abstract:The garden of Xiling Seal Engraver's Society is the model of Chinese literati garden,is known as the best in the world. The scenery inscriptions in the garden embody the traditional features of Chinese garden. Referring to historical records, this paper analyzes the techniques of scenery inscriptions and the relationship between culture and garden landscape. It reviews the cultural origin and philosophical ideas, as well as the artistic beauty of the garden. By doing so, this paper provides a reference to the scenery inscriptions of modern gardens.

Abstract:The site of Xiling Seal Engraver's Society is a typical upland garden in the West Lake Scenic Area. It was praised as "the crown garden on the West Lake" by Mr. Chen Congzhou for its unique surroundings, appropriate layout, wonderful spatial organization and deep artistic conception. This paper attempts to conduct a systematic study on the spatial organization of the site of Xiling Seal Engraver's Society, by combing its spatial composition relationship, analyzing its spatial layout, exploring its spatial sequence, and explaining the spatial structure for landscape spots as well. The analysis showed the marvellous skills for spatial organization of classical upland gardens, which provides a reference for space design of modern upland or mountain gardens.

Abstract:Because of the geographical condition and climate,the plant cultivation had a limitation in the private gardens in Beijing,but numerous examples presented wonderful plant landscapes with distinctive local characteristics.The proportion of the arbors including Chinese scholar tree,elm,jujube tree and willow was large and flowers bushes such as lilac,crabapple,and peony were valued highly.Some spices from South China were cultivated in green houses.Besides,liana,vegetable and bamboo were common in the gardens.Pairs of arbors or bushes were frequently planted in symmetry in the counties,and other plants were arranged according to buildings,rockeries and water.Based on a lot of documents and examples,the author analyzes the characters of the plant landscape design of the private gardens in Beijing.

Abstract:Based on the literature and comparative analysis,the history and development of the patio garden styles in western countries were summarized.Typical gardens were including in the Old Testament,antiquity,middle ages,the Renaissance,as well as in the modern time.Oriental gardens were presented by cased by the Chinese and Japanese for realization of garden history.Traditional landscape architecture in garden designs showed plentiful and exquisite.It is necessary for mastering the historical characteristics and traditional garden culture,and also benefit to the further researches of the modern gardens.

Abstract:Shaoyuan, a private garden of a famous artist Mi Wanzhong in Ming Dynasty, is located in the Haidian District in Beijing. An old picture and numerous books once depicted its beautiful scenes. Imitating the gardens in Jiangnan (the southern area of the Changjiang River), it consisted varied water landscapes and simple but elegant buildings, rockeries, plants and steles, which presented a deep and quite mood different from the other private gardens in Beijing. Based on the materials and survey, its history and gardening characteristics are explored in this paper.

Abstract:Site selection is the first approach of Chinese ancient gardening.In the history,the site selections of numerous private gardens in Beijing follow classic tradition,preferring the site with abundant resources of water and good views,so that Shishahai and Paozihe in the inner city,Fengtai and Caoqiao in the southern suburb and Haidian in the western suburb were regarded as the best areas for gardening.Besides,many gardens in the lanes also choose the secluded sites as far as possible.Based on a great deal of firsthand materials,the author tries to study the distribution and site selections of the private gardens of Beijing in different periods,and make further exploration of the standards of selection.
