Abstract:Epichloe fungal endophytes are broadly found in cool-season grasses. The symbiosis between these grasses and Epichloe may improve the abiotic and biotic resistance of the grass plant, but some Epichloe species produce alkaloids that are toxic for livestock. Therefore, it is important to understand the characteristics of the grass-Epichloe s symbiosis so that the beneficial aspects can be preserved and the toxic effects to livestock can be avoided. Since the 1990s, Chinese researchers have conducted a series of studies on grass-Epichloe symbiosis. In this review, we describe the current state of Epichloe endophyte research in Chinese native grasses. We found that more than 77 species of native grasses in China are associated with Epichloe endophytes. In addition, we review the effects of various Epichloe species on native grass responses to abiotic and biotic stress, phylogeny, and alkaloid production. We provide an overview of the study of Epichloe species on native grasses in China and directions for future research.

Abstract:Epichloë fungal endophytes hold promise in sustainable agriculture by fortifying cool-season grasses such as Elymus spp. against various stresses. Elymus spp. are widely distributed in Northwest China with a high incidence of endophyte infections. In this study, we identified 20 Epichloë endophytic fungal strains carried by five Elymus spp. from five areas of Northwest China and systematically characterized their morphology, molecular phylogeny, mating type, and alkaloid diversity for the first time. The morphological characterization underscores strain diversity, with variable colony textures and growth rates. A phylogenetic analysis confirms all strains are E. bromicola, emphasizing their taxonomic status. Alkaloid-encoding gene profiling delineates distinct alkaloid synthesis capabilities among the strains, which are crucial for host adaptability and resistance. A mating-type analysis reveals uniformity (mtAC) across the Epichloë strains, simplifying breeding strategies. Notably, the Epichloë strains exhibit diverse alkaloid synthesis gene profiles, impacting host interactions. This research emphasizes the ecological significance of Epichloë endophytes in Elymus spp. ecosystems, offering insights into their genetic diversity and potential applications in sustainable agriculture.

Abstract:Much research is now being conducted on grasses-Epichloe associations. The asexual Epichloe species have attracted much attention over the past 30 years as they can provide benefits to important forage grasses, in particular perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), annual ryegrass (L. multiflorum), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea), and meadow fescue (F. pratense). Some findings suggest that grasses with an epichloe endophyte (E+) are more resistant to pathogenic fungi than uninfected (E–) grass. Tests using detached and attached leaves have shown that the size of lesions caused by pathogenic fungi are smaller on E+ leaves than on E– leaves. Products inhibitory to plant pathogenic fungi are produced by epichloe endophytes growing saprotrophically.

Abstract:Epichloë species and their anamorphic relatives in genus Neotyphodium are fungal symbionts of grasses ubiquitously existing in temperate regions all over the world. To date, 13 Epichloë species and 22 Neotyphodium species have been formally described, based on morphological characters and phylogenetic analyses. Leymus chinensis (Poaceae) is a dominant grass native to the Inner Mongolia steppe of China. Previously, it was reported to harbor endophytes, but little was known about these endophytes. To investigate their diversity and taxonomy, 96 fungal isolates were obtained from three field populations of L. chinensis. The isolates were classified into three morphotypes based on morphological characters and phylogenetic analyses of sequences of genes for β-tubulin (tubB), translation elongation factor 1-α (tefA), and actin (actG). The dominant morphotype, morphotype I, was identified as a choke disease endophyte, Epichloë bromicola. This broadened the host range and phylogenetic definition of E. bromicola.

Abstract:The past decade has witnessed significant advances in understanding the interaction between grasses and systemic fungal endophytes of the genus Epichloë, with evidence that plants have evolved multiple strategies to cope with abiotic stresses by reprogramming physiological responses. Soil nutrients directly affect plant growth, while soil microbes are also closely connected to plant growth and health. Epichloë endophytes could affect soil fertility by modifying soil nutrient contents and soil microbial diversity. Therefore, we analyze recent advances in our understanding of the role of Epichloë endophytes under the various abiotic stresses and the role of grass-Epichloë symbiosis on soil fertility. Various cool-season grasses are infected by Epichloë species, which contribute to health, growth, persistence, and seed survival of host grasses by regulating key systems, including photosynthesis, osmotic regulation, and antioxidants and activity of key enzymes of host physiology processes under abiotic stresses. The Epichloë endophyte offers significant prospects to magnify the crop yield, plant resistance, and food safety in ecological systems by modulating soil physiochemical properties and soil microbes. The enhancing resistance of host grasses to abiotic stresses by an Epichloë endophyte is a complex manifestation of different physiological and biochemical events through regulating soil properties and soil microbes by the fungal endophyte. The Epichloë-mediated mechanisms underlying regulation of abiotic stress responses are involved in osmotic adjustment, antioxidant machinery, photosynthetic system, and activity of key enzymes critical in developing plant adaptation strategies to abiotic stress. Therefore, the Epichloë endophytes are an attractive choice in increasing resistance of plants to abiotic stresses and are also a good candidate for improving soil fertility and regulating microbial diversity to improve plant growth.

Abstract:Various cool-season grasses are infected by Epichloë endophyte, and this symbiotic relationship is always of benefit to the host grass due to an increased resistance to abiotic and biotic stresses. Fungal diseases adversely affect the yield, quality, and economic benefits of rangelands, which affects the production of animal husbandry. Therefore, it is imperative to breed resistant cultivars and to better understand the role of fungal endophytes in order to protect grasses against pathogens. The present review introduces research regarding how these endophytes affect the growth of pathogens in vitro and how they change the resistance of host plants to plant diseases. From the perspective of physical defense, changes in physiological indexes, and secretion of chemical compounds, we summarize the potential mechanisms by which endophytes are able to enhance the disease resistance of a host grass. Through these, we aim to establish a solid theoretical foundation for plant disease control and disease resistance breeding by application of fungal endophytes. A broader understanding of fungal endophyte effects on hosts could create a new opportunity for managing or introducing fungal symbioses in both agronomic or non-agronomic ecosystems.

Abstract:There has been a recent surge in interest on grass-endophyte symbiosis as it exerts a strong influence on the agricultural ecosystem. Our understanding of incidence of infection and diversity of endophytic fungi in grasses is vital so as to discover new grass-endophyte associations and their beneficial effects. In this paper, we have documented the patterns of distribution and diversity of Epichloe/Neotyphodium fungal endophytes in a perennial bunchgrass, Achnatherum sibiricum (Poaceae) from the Inner Mongolia Steppe. We investigated yearly, seasonal and spatial variations in infection frequency of Epichloe/Neotyphodium endophytes in A. sibiricum from four study sites, i.e., Hulingol (HLG), West Ujimqin (WUM), Plot I and Plot II5 of Inner Mongolia Grassland Ecosystem Research Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMGERS). We also analysed correlations of infection frequency and diversity of endophytic fungi with selected soil factors and the growth characteristics of A. sibiricum in the four sampling sites. The infection frequencies of endophytic fungi were not significantly related to the soil factors or growth status of A. sibiricum, although variations in the infection frequencies among four A. sibiricum populations were observed during the summer. Twenty-seven isolates of Neotyphodium were obtained from the four A. sibiricum populations and categorized into 9 morphotypes based on colony morphology, growth rate, and conidial size on potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium. The greatest morphotypic diversity of Neotyphodium was observed in A. sibiricum population from IMGERS-Plot II. This observation was consistent with its highly heterogeneous habitat because the plot had been enclosed for more than 20 years. There was a significant (P < 0.05) trend for the conidial length of Neotyphodium to gradually increase from the eastern China to the western China populations of A. sibiricum. In addition, we observed A. sibirieum plants from HLG and WUM showing Epichloe stromata on their flowering culms. Our study suggests that the endophytic fungi in natural (wild) A. sibiricum populations are highly diverse and may have different life histories.

Abstract:Endophytic fungi are an important component, are ubiquitous and occur within all know plants, including a broad range of hosts in various ecosystems, and therefore play an important role in the natural environment. More than 1 million species of endophytic fungi are estimated to exist based on a ratio of vascular plants to fungal species of 1:4 or 1:5. Nevertheless, our recognition of endophyte diversity is limited at present. In surveys of endophyte diversity, traditional techniques, such as cultivation-dependent methods, have been routinely used in previous studies. The discovery of endophytic fungi in natural environments, however, has been limited by traditional methodology due to some non-sporulating and non-culturable fungi. Molecular techniques, such as DNA fingerprinting and sequencing methods, have been successfully employed in the detection and identification of endophytic fungi, and different endophyte diversity and community composition have been documented by cultivation-dependent and molecular techniques. This review paper summarises recent progress in the study of endophytic fungal diversity and some key questions are highlighted for future research in endophyte biology.
Discovery of Epichloë As Novel Endophytes of Psathyrostachys Lanuginosa in China and Their Alkaloid Profiling

Abstract:The Epichloë genus represents a significant group of above-ground endophytes extensively researched for their potential applications in agriculture and ecology. Additionally, Epichloë species synthesize bioactive alkaloids, which generally cause health problems in livestock and have detrimental effects on the performance of insect herbivores. Psathyrostachys lanuginosa serves as a valuable forage grass for livestock owing to its high nutritional value and resilience in adverse environmental conditions. Nevertheless, to date, no reports have documented Epichloë as endophytes of P. lanuginosa. In this study, four strains (PF5, PF9, QG2, and QG4) were isolated and identified through morphological, molecular, and phylogenetic analyses as endophytes of P. lanuginosa. Morphological analysis indicated colony characteristics and conidia features consistent with symbiotic Epichloë, with no significant differences observed in growth rates or conidia dimensions among the four strains. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed all strains as E. bromicola. Additionally, alkaloid biosynthetic genes were detected, revealing differences in the potential synthesis of peramine and indole diterpenoid alkaloids among strains from different geographic origins. However, all four E. bromicola strains exhibited similar potential for synthesizing ergot alkaloids, but not loline alkaloids. Overall, this study identified P. lanuginosa as a novel host for E. bromicola and provided insights into the alkaloid profiles of these strains, laying a solid foundation for the scientific and rational utilization of Epichloë resources.
Does Epichloë Endophyte Enhance Host Tolerance to Root Hemiparasite?

Abstract:Epichloë endophytes have been shown to be mutualistic symbionts of cool-season grasses under most environmental conditions. Although pairwise interactions between hemiparasites and their hosts are heavily affected by host-associated symbiotic microorganisms, little attention has been paid to the effects of microbe–plant interactions, particularly endophytic symbiosis, in studies examining the effects of parasitic plants on host performance. In this study, we performed a greenhouse experiment to examine the effects of hereditary Epichloë endophyte symbiosis on the growth of two host grasses (Stipa purpurea and Elymus tangutorum) in the presence or absence of a facultative root hemiparasite (Pedicularis kansuensis Maxim). We observed parasitism of both hosts by P. kansuensis: when grown with a host plant, the hemiparasite decreased the performance of the host while improving its own biomass and survival rate of the hemiparasite. Parasitized endophyte-infected S. purpurea plants had higher biomass, tillers, root:shoot ratio, and photosynthetic parameters and a lower number of functional haustoria than the endophyte-free S. purpurea conspecifics. By contrast, parasitized endophyte-infected E. tangutorum had a lower biomass, root:shoot ratio, and photosynthetic parameters and a higher number of haustoria and functional haustoria than their endophyte-free counterparts. Our results reveal that the interactions between the endophytes and the host grasses are context dependent and that plant–plant interactions can strongly affect their mutualistic interactions. Endophytes originating from S. purpurea alleviate the host biomass reduction by P. kansuensis and growth depression in the hemiparasite. These findings shed new light on using grass–endophyte symbionts as biocontrol methods for the effective and sustainable management of this weedy hemiparasite.
Genetic Diversity and Structure of Neotyphodium Species and Their Host Achnatherum sibiricum in a Natural Grass–Endophyte System

Abstract:Achnatherum sibiricum (Poaceae) is a perennial bunchgrass native to the Inner Mongolia Steppe of China. This grass is commonly infected by epichloë endophytes with high-infection frequencies. Previously, we identified two predominant Neotyphodium spp., N. sibiricum and N. gansuense. In the present study, genetic diversity and structure were analyzed for the two predominant Neotyphodium spp. as well as the host grass. We obtained 103 fungal isolates from five populations; 33 were identified as N. sibiricum and 61 as N. gansuense. All populations hosted both endophytic species, but genetic variation was much higher for N. gansuense than for N. sibiricum. The majority of fungal isolates were haploid, and 13% of them were heterozygous at one SSR locus, suggesting hybrid origins of those isolates. Significant linkage disequilibrium of fungal SSR loci suggested that both fungal species primarily propagate by clonal growth through plant seeds, whereas variation in genetic diversity and the presence of hybrids in both endophytic species revealed that although clonal propagation was prevalent, occasional recombination might also occur. By comparing genetic differentiation among populations, we found around 4–7-fold greater differentiation of endophyte populations than host populations, implying more restricted gene flow of endophytes than hosts. We proposed that endophyte infection of A. sibiricum might confer the host some selective advantages under certain conditions, which could help to maintain high-endophyte-infection frequencies in host populations, even when their gene flows do not match each other. Furthermore, we suggested that the same genotype of endophyte as well as host should be confirmed if the objective of the study is to know the influence of endophyte or host genotype on their symbiotic relationship, instead of just considering whether the plant is infected by an endophyte or not, since endophytes from the same host species could exhibit high levels of genetic diversity, which is likely to influence the outcome of their symbiotic relationship.

Abstract:Plant phenotype is a complex entity largely controlled by the genotype and various environmental factors. Importantly, co-evolution has allowed plants to coexist with the biotic factors in their surroundings. Recently, plant endophytes as an external plant phenotype, forming part of the complex plethora of the plant microbial assemblage, have gained immense attention from plant scientists. Functionally, endophytes impact the plant in many ways, including increasing nutrient availability, enhancing the ability of plants to cope with both abiotic and biotic stress, and enhancing the accumulation of important plant secondary metabolites. The current state of research has been devoted to evaluating the phenotypic impacts of endophytes on host plants, including their direct influence on plant metabolite accumulation and stress response. However, there is a knowledge gap in how genetic factors influence the interaction of endophytes with host plants, pathogens, and other plant microbial communities, eventually controlling the extended microbial plant phenotype. This review will summarize how host genetic factors can impact the abundance and functional diversity of the endophytic microbial community, how endophytes influence host gene expression, and the host–endophyte–pathogen disease triangle. This information will provide novel insights into how breeders could specifically target the plant–endophyte extended phenotype for crop improvement.

Effect of endophyte infection on drought-resistance of graminaceous grasses

Abstract:In this paper research progress on effect of endophyte infection on drought-resistance of graminaceous grasses both in China and overseas in recent years was reviewed and key areas for future study were suggested.Experimental researches showed that compared with endophyte free(E-) grass,endophyte infected(E+) grass performed better adaptation to biotic and abiotic stresses,and produced higher herbage dry matter yield,especially endophytes could enhance drought-resistance of grass.The proposed mechanisms improving drought tolerance by endophytes included enhanced root growth,leaf growth,stomatal regulation osmotic adjustment and activity of protective antioxidant.But some researches indicated that not all endophytes had beneficial effects on drought-resistance of the host grass,the relation of endophyte-grass association was also determined by the interaction of the host,endophyte genotype and environmental conditions.Key areas for future research should focus on mechanism of drought-resistance,biological characteristic and ecological characteristic of endophyte-grass association.Additional important research direction was to breed new drought-resistance pasture and turfgrass cultivars by incorporating endophytes into existed cultivars,and to improve ecological functions in native grassland as well.
Endophytic Infection Increases the Belowground Over-Yielding Effects of the Host Grass Community Mainly by Increasing the Complementary Effects

Abstract:IntroductionIncreases in plant species diversity may increase the community diversity effect and produce community over-yielding. Epichloë endophytes, as symbiotic microorganisms, are also capable of regulating plant communities, but their effects on community diversity effects are often overlooked.MethodsIn this experiment, we investigated the effects of endophytes on the diversity effects of host plant community biomass by constructing artificial communities with 1-species monocultures and 2- and 4-species mixtures of endophyte-infected (E+) and endophyte-free (E-) Achnatherum sibiricum and three common plants in its native habitat, which were potted in live and sterilized soil.Results and discussionThe results showed that endophyte infection significantly increased the belowground biomass and abundance of Cleistogenes squarrosa, marginally significantly increased the abundance of Stipa grandis and significantly increased the community diversity (evenness) of the 4-species mixtures. Endophyte infection also significantly increased the over-yielding effects on belowground biomass of the 4-species mixtures in the live soil, and the increase in diversity effects on belowground biomass was mainly due to the endophyte significantly increasing the complementary effects on belowground biomass. The effects of soil microorganisms on the diversity effects on belowground biomass of the 4-species mixtures were mainly derived from their influences on the complementary effects. The effects of endophytes and soil microorganisms on the diversity effects on belowground biomass of the 4-species communities were independent, and both contributed similarly to the complementary effects on belowground biomass. The finding that endophyte infection promotes belowground over-yielding in live soil at higher levels of species diversity suggests that endophytes may be one of the factors contributing to the positive relationship between species diversity and productivity and explains the stable co-existence of endophyte-infected Achnatherum sibiricum with a variety of plants in the Inner Mongolian grasslands.
New insights into endophytic fungi diversity and their potential correlation with polyphyllin levels of Paris polyphylla var. yunnanensis

Abstract:Endophytes confer fitness advantages to host plants. However, the ecological communities of endophytic fungi in the different tissues (rhizomes, stems, and leaves) of Paris polyphylla and the relationship of their endophytic fungi with polyphyllin levels remain unclear. In this study, the community diversity and differences of endophytic fungi in the rhizomes, stems, and leaves of P. polyphylla var. yunnanensis were investigated, and a comprehensively diverse community of endophytic fungi was represented, including 50 genera, 44 families, 30 orders, 12 classes, and 5 phyla. Distributions of endophytic fungi differed greatly across the three tissues, with six genera common to all tissues, and 11, 5, and 4 genera specific to the rhizomes, stems, and leaves, respectively. Seven genera showed a significantly positive correlation to polyphyllin contents, indicating their potential roles in polyphyllin accumulation. This study provides valuable information for further research of the ecological and biological functions of endophytic fungi of P. polyphylla.
Removal of Soil Microbes Alters Interspecific Competitiveness of Epichloë Endophyte-Infected over Endophyte-Free Leymus Chinensis

Abstract:Epichloë endophytes may not only affect the growth and resistances of host grasses, but may also affect soil environment including soil microbes. Can Epichloë endophyte-mediated modification of soil microbes affect the competitive ability of host grasses? In this study, we tested whether Epichloë endophytes and soil microbes alter intraspecific competition between Epichloë endophyte-colonized (EI) and endophyte-free (EF) Leymus chinensis and interspecific competition between L. chinensis and Stipa krylovii. The results demonstrated that Epichloë endophyte colonization significantly enhanced the intraspecific competitive ability of L. chinensis and that this beneficial effect was not affected by soil microbes. Under interspecific competition, however, significant interactions between Epichloë endophytes and soil microbes were observed. The effect of Epichloë endophytes on interspecific competitiveness of the host changed from positive to neutral with soil microbe removal. Here higher mycorrhizal colonization rates probably contributed to interspecific competitive advantages of EI over EF L. chinensis. Our result suggests that Epichloë endophytes can influence the competitive ability of the host through plant soil feedbacks from the currently competing plant species.

Abstract:The complex functions of fungal endophytes have received intensive study during the past three decades because of their roles in production loss of livestock and enhancement of biotic and abiotic stress resistances in hosts. Most of these studies focused on cultivated grasses, but little is known about the distribution and mechanisms of endophytes in native grass populations. Surveys of grass species associated with Neotyphodium and Epichloё fungal endophytes made in native grasslands of northern China suggested that endophytes are widely distributed in natural grass populations. Among them, Achnatherum sibiricum was found to associate with fungal endophytes in all sites investigated. Ach. sibiricum is a perennial, sparse bunch grass that inhabits temperate steppe in China. This grass can be found in different habitats such as meadows, typical steppes and forests. Its distribution may be largely determined by precipitation, while it is usually a companion species in communities and it sometimes can become the dominant species. Untill now, no toxicosis problems in grazing animals have been reported in pastures containing Ach. sibiricum.Six natural populations (IMGERS-CAS, Leymus chinensis plot of the IMGERS-CAS, Xi Ujimqin Qi, Hulingol, Arshan, Hailar) of Ach. sibiricum in mid- and eastern Inner Mongolia Steppe of varying distances from each other were chosen. Locations and descriptions of sampling sites were recorded. Infection frequency of fungal endophytes was detected and seeds from 30 Ach. sibiricum individuals were collected. Fungal endophytes of different morphologies were isolated from seeds and at each site, strains of different morphologies were used as internal transcribed spacers of the nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA-ITS) sequence analysis. Regions of rDNA-ITS were amplified, cloned, sequenced and submitted to GenBank. Furthermore, phylogenetic analysis was conducted with additional sequences conserved in GenBank. Fungal endophytes were found at high frequencies in all investigated local populations regardless of their location, elevation, annual precipitation, mean temperature and vegetation types, implying a systemic association between native grasses and fungal endophytes. In plants which have seed-transmitted endophytes, high infection frequency suggests a selective advantage compared with uninfected plants. This may be due to increased resistance to pathogens or herbivores. Another possible factor is that endophyte infection enhanced plant′s resistance to an abiotic stress, such as drought or fire. Nineteen strains from six populations were used in rDNA-ITS sequence analysis. They were IB from IMGERS-CAS; LB, LC, LL from Leymus chinensis plot of the IMGERS-CAS; XA, XB, XD, XE, XF, XG from Xi Ujimqin Qi; HA, HE from Hulingol; AA, AB, AC, AD from Arshan and EA, EB, EC from Hailar. Besides LC, LL and XE, which were pathogens belonged to Ascomycota but not Epichlo, there were only five informative sites in the alignment of 16 rDNA-ITS sequences and there were no correlation between differences of sequences and geographical distances. Among them IB, LB, AC and EB have the same sequences, which is consistent with the results of morphological observation. Results of Maximum parsimony tree and N-J tree based on ITS5.8S sequences of 16 fungal strains showed that all Epichlo symboints with Ach. sibiricum were clustered into one taxonomic group with 97% bootstrap support compared to other reference endophyte isolates used in this analysis. Therefore we propose that all Epichlo symboints share the same evolutionary origin. Their diverse morphologies and high genetic variations among different populations are attributed to broad distribution of Ach. sibiricum and differences in climate and plant community.

Abstract:Many grasses are infected by systemic fungal endophytes that occur in aboveground plant tissues. Both aboveground endophytic fungi and belowground soil microbes can influence plant growth, but studies on their simultaneous effects on plant growth and competitiveness are limited. This study aims to investigate whether the role of aboveground endophytic fungi in the growth and competitive ability of the host grasses was influenced by soil microbes. In this study, we used Epichloe endophyte-infected and endophyte-free Achnatherum sibiricum as plant materials. A wet sieving method was adopted to obtain microbial inocula with different diversities (com, combined microbe fraction, high diversity; sm, small microbe fraction, low diversity). A three-factor randomized block design was used. The first factor was the endophyte infection status of A. sibiricum. The second factor was the microbial composition of the soil inocula. The third factor was the planting type. Growth and competitive characters were measured after 16 weeks. The results showed that a soil microbe inoculation was detrimental to the growth of A. sibiricum. Epichloe endophytes significantly mitigated the inhibitory effect of soil microbes on A. sibiricum planted alone. When A. sibiricum was planted with Stipa grandis, there was a significant interaction between Epichloe endophytes and soil microbes on the interspecific competition of A. sibiricum. When inoculated with small microbial community fraction, Epichloe endophytes significantly improved the interspecific competitive ability of host plants. When inoculated with combined microbial community fraction, however, Epichloe endophytes had no significant effect on host competition. The results showed that the interaction between Epichloe endophytes and soil microbes contributed more to the interspecific competitive ability than either Epichloe endophytes or soil microbes alone.

Abstract:In natural ecosystems,plants constitute suitable habitats and niches for the colonization of a diversity of microorganisms.Endophytic fungi,living in the inner of healthy plant tissues ubiquitously,exhibit complex interactions with their hosts(a continuum of mutualism,antagonism and neutralism) and different transmission modes(horizontal or vertical).Plant nutrient acquisition and stress tolerance may be strengthened by the fungal symbiont.However,a successful plant-fungal endophyte interaction requires the fine tuning of antagonistic interactions,which implies the evolution of unique self-regulating mechanisms on both sides to maintain a mutualistic interaction.Host species,fungal genotype and environmental factors such as climate and soil properties as well as the nutritional status of the plant will ultimately determine the outcome of the interaction.Additionally,ternary interactions with mycorrhizal fungi and mycoviruses may also be important components participating in the plant-endophyte association and,thus,influence the host phenotype.In this review,we attempt to outline the interactive mechanisms of plant-fungal endophyte associations on a morphological,physiological and molecular level.

Abstract:Forage grasses(Poaceae)often harbour endophytes belonging to the Neotyphodium and Epichlo(Clavicipitaceae,Ascomycota)genera.Neotyphodiumendophytes,the asexual state of Epichlospecies,helps to protect cool-season grasses against biotic and abiotic stresses including drought,disease,herbivory and parasitism and enhance aboveground and belowground vegetative and reproductive growth.There is little information on colonial diversity of asexual endophytes isolated fromElymus species in northwest Chinese.In the present study,different geographic populations of Elymus species were tested using the aniline blue screening method;15endophyte strains were isolated from endophyte positive plants.The average growth rate(on potato dextrose agar)of the isolated strains was 0.41-0.85mm/day and was correlated with altitude.Endophyte strains isolated from regions below an altitude of 3000 mgrew faster than strains isolated from regions above3000 m.The colonial morphology of endophyte strains isolated from regions above 3000 m was similar whereas the colonial morphology of endophyte strains isolated from lower altitudes differed.In addition,the phylogenetic trees showed that endophytes collected above 3000 mwere clustered whereas endophyte strains from lower altitudes demonstrated a star-like topology.The results will provide a theoretical basis for the identification of endophyte from northwest Chinese Elymus species.
