Abstract:A novel hydrated rare earth polyborate, Ln[B5O8(OH)(2)] (Ln=Pr, Nd) has been synthesized by using boric acid as a flux at 200 degrees C. Its crystal structure is established by powder X-ray diffraction technique. Ln[B5O8(OH)(2)] crystallizes in monoclinic space groupP2(1)/c. The title compounds consist of a double three-membered ring composed of three BO4 and two BO3 groups as the fundamental building block. The FBB shares four common oxygen atoms with the adjacent FBBs, producing a borate layer containing nine-membered borate ring window, of which the rare earth cations are located around the center. The Ln(3+) cations are coordinated with ten oxygen atoms from the nine-membered ring window and the adjacent borate layer. The borate layers are stacked along the b axis and are interlinked by the Ln-O bond.

Abstract:Three novel hydrated rare earth polyborates, Ln[B8O11(OH)(5)] (Ln = La-Nd) (1), Ln[B9O13-(OH)(4)].H2O (Ln = Pr - Eu) (2), and Ce[B5O8(OH)]NO3.3H(2)O (3) have been synthesized by using boric acid as a flux at 240 degreesC, starting from rare earth oxides or nitrates and an excess of boric acid. All these polyborates crystallize in monoclinic structures (P2(1)/n) and consist of borate sheets as the fundamental unit, that is, [LnB(6)O(11)] sheet in 1 and 2 and [CeB5O9] sheet in 3. The borate sheets all contain a nine-membered borate ring, of which the rare earth cations are located around the center. The borate frameworks in 1 and 3 are two-dimensional, which are interlinked via ionic Ln-O bonds forming 3D structures. While in 2 the borate framework is three-dimensional with small channels filled by water molecules. Annealing the hydrated polyborates I and 2 at moderate temperature leads to two anhydrous pentaborates, alpha-LnB(5)O(9) (4) for Ln = Pr-Eu and beta-LnB(5)O(9) (5) for Ln = La, Ce. The structure of beta-LaB5O9 has been determined by an ab initio method using powder X-ray diffraction data. It crystallizes in a monoclinic structure in the space group P2(1)/c with a = 6.4418(l) Angstrom, b = 11.6888(3) Angstrom, c = 8.1706(2) Angstrom, and beta = 105.167(1)degrees. The structure of beta-LnB(5)O(9) contains buckled nine-membered ring borate sheets that are interlinked by BO3 groups forming a three-dimensional framework. The Eu3+-doped beta-LaB5O9 materials show dominant D-5(0 -->) F-7(2) emission and a low quenching concentration (0.6 at. %).

Abstract:Two novel poly(Schiff base)s (PPHBT and PPHPHN) were prepared by polycondensation of 2,2-diamino-4,4'-bithiazole (DABT), 5,6diamino-1,10-phenanthroline (DAPH) with bisdecyloxyterephthaldehyde (BDTA), respectively. The structures of the poly(Schiff base)s were determined by IR and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The Nd3+ complexes of poly(Schiff base) were prepared and characterized. The contents of Nd for complexes were measured by complexometric titration. The magnetic behavior of the complexes was examined as a function of magnetic field strength at 4 K and as a function of temperature (4-300 K). The results show that both PPHBT-Nd3+ and PPHPHN-Nd3+ exhibit the characteristic of soft-magnetic materials at low temperature. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd, All rights reserved.

Abstract:Hydrated rare earth hexaborates H(3)LnB(6)O(12) (Ln = Sm-Lu) have been synthesized by using molten boric acid as the reaction medium. H(3)LnB(6)O(12) decomposes at certain temperatures to form anhydrous pentaborates LnB(5)O(9) (Ln = Sm-Er) or orthoborates LnBO(3) (Ln = Tm-Lu). The crystal structures of the hexaborates and pentaborates have been determined by single-crystal and powder diffraction techniques. The hydrated hexaborates H(3)LnB(6)O(12) crystallize in a trigonal structure in the space group R3c, which contain a six-membered ring B6O15 as a fundamental fragment. Anhydrous pentaborates LnB(5)O(9) crystallize in a tetragonal structure that is built up with B4O9 and BO3. LnB(5)O(9) decomposes at higher temperature to metaborates (Ln = Sm-Tb) and orthoborates (Ln = Dy-Er). A phase diagram is presented that shows the stable range of both H(3)LnB(6)O(12) and LnB(5)O(9). The luminescent property of the europium-doped GdB5O9 was studied.

Abstract:Five novel rare earth complexes RE 2(NO 3) 6L 2��nH 2O have been synthesized, where L = 1, 5 - bis(1�� - phenyl - 3�� - methyl - 5�� - pyrazolone - 4��) - 1 - (4�� - aminobutane - 1�� - imino) - 5 - pentaone, a new polydentate ligand containing �� - diketone, Schiff - base and NH 2 groups, RE = Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho. They were characterized by elemental analysis, mass spectra(FAB), FTIR, micro FTIR, variable temperature FTIR and extended X - ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). The results indicate that the complexes are dimer. There are three types of NO 3 - ions in the complexes, mono and didentate ligands and just anion as banlance ion. The C = O, C = N and NH 2 groups all coordinated to rare earth. The coordination number is ca. eight. Two nitrogen and six oxygen atoms make up two coordinate layers. The ranges RE-N is around 0.230-0.240nm and RE - O 0.240-0.250nm. The preliminary results of bioassay show that the compounds have fungicidal activities and can regulate the growth of plants. Some complexes have cardiovascular activities in vitro.

Abstract:Five different types of dual organic-amine templated lanthanide sulfates, [(CH3)(2)NH2](6)[H3N(CH2)(2)NH3][Nd-2(SO4)(7)] (1), [(CH3)(2)NH2](3)[Eu(SO4)(3)] (2), [(CH3)(2)NH2](2)[H3N(CH2)(2)NH3](0.5)[Ln(SO4)(3)] (3) (Ln=Eu (3a), Gd (3b), Tb (3c)), [(CH3)(2)NH2](4)[Dy-2(SO4)(5)] (4) and [H3N(CH2)(2)NH3](5)[Ln(2)(SO4)(8)] (5) (Ln=Dy (5a), Ho (5b), Er (5c), Tm (5d), Yb (5e), Lu (5f)) have been solvothermally obtained by employing dimethylacetamide (DMAc) as solvent and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, thermal analysis, fluorescent spectra and ICP. The zigzag chain structure of compound 1 is constructed from two types of 4-membered rings (4 MRs) which connect each other alternately by sulfate groups. The one-dimensional (1D) chainlike structure of compound 2 is alternately linked by tetramer [Eu-2(SO4)(2)O-10] and 4 MR units. Compounds 3a to 3c are isomorphous and have similar interesting two-dimensional (2D) frameworks fabricated through zigzag chains and 12 MRs, fully protonated ethylenediamine (en) are located in 12 MRs and protonated dimethylamine (dma) are located between the inorganic layers. Compound 4 exhibits a 2D layered structure and the plane layers consist of two types of double stranded chains and 12 MRs. Compounds 5a to 5f are also isomorphous and feature a binuclear lanthanide cluster structure. Although the 12 compounds were synthesized under the same conditions except the rare earth oxide types, they belong to five types of structures and we can clearly see obvious transitivity and uniformity, as the ionic radius decreases, the coordination number of the rare earth elements decreases from 9 to 8 and the lanthanide contraction supports crystal structures concerning a sterically hindered coordination atmosphere. The luminescent properties of compounds 2, 3a and 3c exhibit characteristic europium and terbium luminescence.

Abstract:The oxygen-bridged dinuclear rare earth complexes (Ln = Nd (1), Y (2)) bearing N-heterocyclic olefin moieties were synthesized by treating the imidazolidinium salt [SIMes-H]Br with potassium amide and rare earth bis(trimethylsilyl)amides. Complex 1 was characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis and complex 2 was characterized by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. Both complexes were characterized by elemental analysis. Crystal data of complex 1: C74H138O2N8Si8Nd2, M-r = 1685.12, orthorhombic, space group Pbca, a = 25.1105(7), b = 11.9188(2), c = 29.6151(7) angstrom, V= 8863.4(4) angstrom(3), Z = 4, D-c = 1.263 g.cm(-3), mu = 1.311 mm(-1), F(000) = 3544, the final R = 0.0418 and wR = 0.0770 for all data. The ring-opening of tetrahydrofuran molecule was proven, the possible mechanism for the formation of N-heterocyclic olefin (NHO)-rare earth complexes was speculated and the electronic and steric properties of SIMes and rare earth amides were discussed. This work provides a better understanding of N-heterocyclic carbene rare earth chemistry.
Synthesis, Characterization and Fluorescence of Rare Earth Nitrate Complexes with Triaza-Crown Ether Derivative

Abstract:Four new complexes of rare earths with a triaza-crown ether (L) derived from N3O2-macro cycle 1,12,15-triaza-3, 4: 9,10-dibenzo-5, 8-dioxacycloheptadecane were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, molar conductance, TG-DTA analysis and fluorescence spectra. The composition of the complexes determined as [RE(NO3)3L*3H2O]*H2O (RE=Sm, Eu, Tb and Dy). It is found that Sm3+, Eu3+, Tb3+ and Dy3+ complexes all show strong fluorescence emission in the solid state. Among these complexes, Tb3+ complex has the strongest luminescence intensity. It shows that the ligand L triplet state energy matches 5D4 energy level of Tb3+. In the Eu3+ complex, η(5D0→7F2/5D0→7F1) is 2.6, which indicates that Eu3+ locates at the asymmetric coordination field.

Abstract:A series of rare earth coordination polymers, M(BTC)(DMF)(DMSO) (M = Tb (1), Ho (2), Er (3), Yb (4), Y (5)), with zeolite ABW topology have been synthesized under mild conditions. They exhibit the same three-dimensional (3D) architecture and crystallize in monoclinic symmetry space group P2(1)/n. Their structures are built up from inorganic and organic 4-connected building units, whose vertex symbols are 4.4.6.6.6.8. The building units link to each other to generate approximate 5 x 8 angstroms2 channels along the [100] direction. The luminescent and magnetic properties of these compounds are investigated, and the results reveal that they could be anticipated to be potential antiferromagnetic and fluorescent materials.

Abstract:Rare earth borates are important due to their excellent properties, especially for optics. Here, we report the hydrothermal synthesis and structural determination by single-crystal X-ray diffraction of two new samarium polyborates with layered structures, being constituted by hexaborate chains. These hexaborate chains are connected by samarium polyhedra, forming dense sheets that further interact with each other by hydrogen bonding via isolated boric acid between these sheets. The third phase possesses a three-dimensional framework structure. The thermal stability of selective samples has been studied. The crystallization of samarium borate depends highly on the experimental conditions. Three samarium polyborates have been crystallized in very similar experimental conditions, clearly indicating that new lanthanide borate compounds with tailored structures may be prepared in the future by careful choice of physicochemical conditions.

Abstract:While rare-earth borides represent a class of important materials in modem industries,there are few fundamental researches on their electronic structures and physicochemical properties.Recently,we have performed combined experimental and theoretical studies on rare-earth boron clusters and their cluster-assembled complexes,revealing a series of rare-earth inverse sandwich clusters with fascinating electronic structures and chemical bonding patterns.In this overview article,we summarize recent progresses in this area and provide a perspective view on the future development of rare-earth boride clusters.Understanding the electronic structures of these clusters helps to design materials of f-element (lanthanide and actinide) borides with critical physiochemical properties.

Abstract:Exploration of new compounds belonging to unusual families is always attractive for the everlasting development of material science. Here, three isomorphic rare-earth sulfide borates RE3S3BO3 (RE = Nd, Tb, Dy) have been obtained via a facile metal oxide-boron-sulfur solid-state routine. Their centrosymmetric triclinic structures feature 3D framework built by three types of REO x S y units, viz. REOS6, REO4S3, and REO3S6. Their structural relationship with similar phases and lanthanide contraction rule are discussed. Their optical band gaps are measured to be 2.59–2.70 eV, and the corresponding theoretical calculations are also performed. This work enriches the rarely studied chalcogenide borate system and is conducive to discovering more inorganic materials.

Abstract:The two novel microporous rare-earth coordination polymers: La2(C8H3BrO4)32H2O (1) and Pr2(C8H3BrO4)32H2O (2) are yielded by the hydrothermal synthesis. Complex 1 and 2 are isomorphous. The Ln3+ ion center is located in the nine-coordinated environment, and both carboxyl groups of each ligand coordinate with the metal ion in the same coordination fashion. The ligands, whose carboxyl group chelates Ln3+ ion center in μ1 or μ3 fashion, alternately link Ln3+ ions to get the 1D chain, then the carboxyl group chelating Ln3+ ion center in μ3 fashion bridges another two Ln3+ ion centers from the other two chains to form metal-organic layer. The layers are connected by the ligands in μ4 fashion to furnish 1D channel-structures through b-axis. The microporous structure is well characterized by the nitrogen gas sorption and desorption. TGA and X-ray powder diffraction pattern reveal that the thermal stability of complexes is high and the open frameworks are retained upon removal of coordinated water molecules.
