Abstract:Real-time space-mean speed is a piece of fundamental information not only for the traffic flow theory, but also for the practical use in Intelligent Transportation System. To achieve this traffic information, various data collection techniques have been implemented. Consequently, the data fusion approach becomes indispensable to integrate multi-source heterogeneous data. This paper presents a prototype freeway traffic speed data fusion system based on cellular handoff probe system (CHPS) and microwave sensors. The system consists of four main modules: data transform and split module, neural network based data fusion module, neural network based estimation module, and real-time traffic data sharing module. A simulation study is provided to illustrate the application of the fusion system with data gathered for 12 hours from 07:00 to 19:00. After training, testing and validating different neural networks, it turns out that neural network with four input neurons (speeds from two sources, sample size and handoff link length from CHPS) produces the optimal accuracy under variable traffic conditions (i.e. free flow and incident state in this study). The latter two input neurons are the indication of CHPS precision. The final evaluation results of system performance show that the system can complement the drawback of the individual sensor, and improve the overall estimation accuracy.
