Abstract:The problem of guaranteed cost control for a class of linear discrete uncertain system is considered in this paper. The system under consideration contains convex polyhedral uncertain parameters. An upper bound of performance measured by standard quadratic function is constructed and a method of designing state feedback robust stabilizing control law guaranteeing this quadratic performance index of system be less than this upper bound is derived. It is proved that whether such a control law exists is equivalent to the feasibility of a group of linear matrix inequality Also, a procedure is given to select an optimal state feedback controller in the sense of minimizing the upper bound of quadratic performance index.

Abstract:Under the circumstances that the demand is uncertain, furthermore, the demand sometimes cannot be satisfied by the production, the paper studies the production and maintenance control problem of failure prone production systems. For the hybrid system, a so-called double level hedging point control policy considering purchasing extra production or maintenance capacity is presented, which has strong dynamic characteristics. By the method that studies the problem from over the finite horizon to over the infinite horizon, meanwhile, utilizing a decomposition method, the corresponding hedging points are obtained respectively. The numerical comparison specifies and to some extent testifies the method.

Abstract:The G-chart is proposed by Riaz and Saghirr (2007) for monitoring the changes in the process variability more efficiently. This study investigates the influence of the parent population on the coefficients of the G-Chart. The appropriate values of the coefficients (b(2) and b(3)) has been determined when the distributions of the processes are the normal, exponential, uniform, Laplace, and triangular. The false alarm rate and risk of type II error as performance measures of the G-chart are obtained. The robustness of the G-chart relative to Q-and R-Q-charts is studied. The efficiency of the G-chart relative to those of R-chart for detecting a shift in the process dispersion is examined. The results reveal that the proper attention to the parent population leads to the better performances of the G-chart. The G-chart is more robust than Q-chart and is slightly less efficient than R-Q-chart for detecting outliers. The G-chart is more efficient than R-chart to detect a shift for normal and non-normal processes.

Abstract:Data or measurements are usually thought to be normally distributed when control charts are designed,however,it is not true in some processes.Based on Taguchi's loss function,this paper uses the Burr distribution as the appropriate one for various non-normal distributions to determine the control limits and the sampling plan.An example illustrates the reliability of the method and from the results of the sensitivity analyses,the effects of parameters on the optimal design can be found.

Abstract:Multivariate pre-control chart extends monitoring variable from one variant to multiple,which is an effective method to analyze and monitor two or more quality characteristics,and an important tool to control product quality of production process as well.However,problems are available such as low precision and low monitoring efficiency.On the basis of pre-control chart,in order to reduce the risk of false-judgment,sampling amount has been increased from 5 to 10 in accordance with probability increased by every additional sample,and monitoring rules has been adjusted from 4 to 6 based on new sampling amount.With average run length(AVL)as standard,the effect of new and old monitoring rules has been compared and then the best one could be obtained,which has promoted the monitoring precision and efficiency of Multivariate pre-control chart.

Abstract:Along with the technical development,the unqualified rate of the products tends nigh zero.The traditional 3σ method seems to be incapable for modern online controlling.This paper presents consecutive conforming run-length(CCR) control charts based on the number of consecutive conforming items between two successive nonconforming items,and points out a new opinion of the optical limits through the analysis of the variation between the control limits of CCR control charts and the probabilities as well as the costs of the two types of the errors. Establishing a mathematical model for its costs,gives out the major parts of the researching process,the formula for the optical control limits and the application conditions.

Abstract:In today's competitive landscape, fulfilling customer expectations and achieving a competitive edge are crucial for business success. These objectives can be attained by effective monitoring in both manufacturing and service sectors to enhance quality, reduce variation, and augment productivity. The control chart, a widely used tool for this purpose, has attracted significant attention from researchers for its ability to detect anomalies and manage out‐of‐control situations. The optimization of control charts, a central focus of this review, not only enhances the detection effectiveness but also maintains the desired false alarm rate, thus ensuring efficient process control without additional cost, complexity, or operational challenges for shop floor personnel. The optimization process involves adjusting charting parameters like the sample size, sampling interval, and control limits within a hypothesis testing framework, thereby achieving optimal system performance. Numerous optimization models have been developed to enhance control chart performance. This paper introduces a classification scheme to analyze and categorize the existing research on control chart optimization. By conducting a thorough review of more than 240 articles, the study pinpoints research gaps and offers valuable insights, thereby advancing the future research in this domain.

Gradient-Based Simulation Optimization for Economic Design of Control Charts.

Abstract:We propose a gradient-based simulation optimization approach for economic design of control charts. A generalized likelihood ratio method is applied to estimate the gradient. Two stochastic approximation algorithms with increasing sample size in iterations and randomized sample size are developed to determine an optimal upper control limit for exponentially weighted moving average control chart. Numerical results show that the proposed method is an effective approach for economic design of control charts.

Abstract:An algorithm was developed for the optimization design of control charts based on the probability distribution of the random process shifts (e.g. mean shift). The design objective was to minimize the overall mean of Taguchi's loss function per out-of-control case (denoted as ML) by adjusting the sample size, sampling interval and control limits of the chart in an optimal manner. The optimal chart was therefore named as the ML chart. A three-phase operational scenario for statistical process control (SPC) was also proposed to design and operate the ML chart. The probability distribution of the mean shifts can be modelled by a Rayleigh distribution based on the sample data of the mean shifts acquired in the three-phase scenario. Unlike in the economic control chart designs, the design of the ML chart only requires a limited number of specifications that can be easily determined. The results of the comparison studies show that the ML chart is significantly superior to the Shewhart control chart in view of overall performance. Although the ML chart was discussed in detail only for the chart, the general idea can be applied to many other charts such as CUSUM and EWMA.

Abstract:Given that the overlapping of jobs is permitted, the paper studies the scheduling and control of failure prone production systems, i.e. so-called settings with demand uncertainty and job overlaps. Because a variable demand resource is involved in the production and corrective maintenance control problems of the system, which switched randomly between zero and a maximum level, it is difficult to obtain the analytical solutions of the optimal single hedging point policy. An asymptotic optimal scheduling policy is presented and a double hedging point policy is offered to control simultaneously the production rate and the corrective maintenance rate of the system. The corresponding analytical solutions and approximate solutions are obtained. Considering the relationship of production, corrective maintenance and demand variable, an approximate optimal single hedging point control policy is proposed. Numerical results are presented.

Abstract:A failure-prone manufacturing system with random part processing time and random product demand is considered. The machine failure process is production-dependent rather than time-dependent. The optimal control policy is derived by formulating the process as a discrete-state Markovian decision process using uniformization technique. The monotonicity and asymptotic behaviour of the optimal value function is investigated in details. It is shown that the optimal policy is of a hedging point control. The hedging point of time-dependent failure system is also compared with that of production-dependent failure system. The result is that the former is not less than the latter. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the results.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop an integrated optimization model for control charts and preventive maintenance policies to reduce the costs associated with operating manufacturing processes. When a signable for an assignable cause is triggered, a search is initiated and the process is then brought back to an in-control state by repair. If an assignable cause is not found, the process produces products in an out-of-control state until the next sampling or warning,which occurs first. The Burr distribution is employed to conduct the economic design of (X) over bar charts for non-normal data. Assuming a process with a Weibull distribution time shift and an increasing hazard rate, a generalized economic model for the joint determination of an inspection schedule, the design of the (X) over bar control chart and the preventive maintenance policies are developed. Then the sensitivity analysis to evaluate the effects of non-normality on the optimal design is done.

Abstract:This paper considers a manufacturing system with multiple operational modes producing one part type. The part processing time at each operational mode is exponentially distributed and its rate is controllable. The demand arrival is random and described by a Poisson process. By minimizing an infinite-horizon discounted expected cost function, the optimal service rate control is derived. It is proved that the optimal policy is of a hedging point structure by examining the properties of the optimal cost function such as convexity, monotonicity and asymptotic behaviours. The hedging points at different operational modes can be ordered according to their production capacities. The relationships of the hedging points with some system parameters are presented. These structural properties of the optimal control policy are helpful in finding simple and realistic suboptimal policies for practical manufacturing systems. A numerical example is given to demonstrate our results.

Abstract:There are close relationships among statistical process control, maintenance, and production that have not fully explored in existing studies. In this study, we propose an economic model for jointly optimizing the X-bar control chart, preventive maintenance, and production rate. Unlike conventional studies relying on known failure rate functions, we employ a Gamma process to describe the system's deterioration. This approach allows us to consider not only the relationship between the production rate and the deterioration rate but also a broad range of deterioration scenarios and failure modes in the integrated optimization. After calculating the failure probability at each time point, we propose a recursive method to derive the production revenue, process control costs, and quality losses. This approach explores the close inner relationship between the production rate, deterioration, process monitoring and maintenance. Subsequently, we establish an optimization model aimed at maximizing the profit rate within a renewal cycle. The decision variables of this model include the production rate, control chart coefficient, sample size, length of the first sampling interval, and number of sampling intervals. Finally, we use a case study to illustrate the effectiveness and validity of our proposed model by identifying and explaining the interactions between production rate, deterioration, process control and maintenance.

Abstract:A new algorithm for designing theX & S control charts is presented in this article. It allocates the detection power between theX chart and theS chart in an optimal manner and associates the in-control and out-of-control process conditions with the process capability index,Cpk. Specifically, whenCpk decreases to a hazardous level, theX & S control while, the sample size of theX & S charts is made as small as possible to reduce the cost for the statistical process control (SPC). Moreover, the users are allowed to decide the signaling time with desired probability. Generally, the new algorithm will provide the users with more control on the design and operation of theX & S control charts.

Abstract:The design of control charts in statistical quality control addresses the optimal selection of the design parameters (such as the samp ling frequency and the control limits) and includes sensitivity analysis with respect to system parameters (such as the various process parameters and the economic costs of sampling). The advent of more complicated control chart schemes has necessitated the use of Monte Carlo simulation in the design process, especially in the evaluation of performance measures such as average run length. In this paper, we apply two gradient estimation procedures-perturbation analysis and the likelihood ratio/score function method-to derive estimators that can be used in gradient-based optimization algorithms and in sensitivity analysis when Monte Carlo simulation is employed. We illustrate the techniques on a general control chart that includes the Shewhart chart and the exponentially-weighted moving average chart as special cases. Simulation examples comparing the estimators with each other and with "brute force" finite differences demonstrate the possibility of significant variance reduction in settings of practical interest.

Abstract:This paper discusses the coupling optimization problem for process monitoring and preventive maintenance of non-normal skewed populations.Assuming the process with a Weibull distribution time shift and an increasing hazard rate,the process mean is shifted to the out of control state when an assignable cause occurs.The Weighted Variance X control chart is used for monitoring non-normal process data.Combined production loss of nonconforming product,sampling costs and maintenance costs,we develop an integrated loss model which gives the determining method of dynamic sampling program,control chart parameters and the preventive maintenance intervals.Finally,the sensitivity analysis on the model is performed.

Abstract:This article proposes a method of optimizing control chart (sequential test) to detect an abnormal change in a sequence of finite or even small samples with the unknown change-point and the unknown post-change probability distribution. We not only introduced a performance measure for a given charting statistic to evaluate the detection effect of a control chart, but also constructed an optimal control chart under the measure. The effect of optimization method was illustrated by numerical simulations of three optimized Shewhart, CUSUM and EWMA control charts, and a real data example.

Abstract:The optimal control policy of a partially flexible manufacturing system with random demand is studied. The switching time from one part type to the other can not be omitted. The optimal control policy of service rate is derived from Markovian optimal decision process formulation. By investigating the property of the optimal value function, the optimal policy is shown to be of simple hedging point structure, and sub-optimal control policy--hedging point control is then obtained.
