Study on Preference on Perch Materials and Behavior Expression of Laying Hens in Cages

Abstract:Hens like roosting on perches during night.Provision of perches in cages can improve the behavior and physical conditions of laying hens.390Hyline Brown laying hens were used and randomly allocated to three treatments:individual group(G1),group of four hens(G4),and group of eight hens(G8),respectively.There were 30replicates in each group.The hens in G1,G4and G8groups were put in the test cages in which three perches(steel,wood or plastic perches)were simultaneously provided.Hens behaviors were recorded using cameras at the following periods:8∶00～10∶00;14∶00～16∶00;19∶00～21∶00;23∶30～0∶30on the observational day.The general behaviors and perching behaviors in laying hens under different group size(stocking density),the perch materials preference of hens were investigated.The behaviors of hens in every time period were analyzed,and hens’positions on test perches during mid-night were recorded.The results showed that group size(stocking density)had significant effect on most general behaviors of laying hens expect perching behavior(P< 0.01).There were great differences in general behaviors during different time periods(P<0.001).In the preference test during night,wood perches were much preferred to steel or plastic perches by hens in all groups(P< 0.05).In G1groups,frequency of transferring from one perch to another by hens was higher on steel perches than wood or plastic perches(P<0.05)at daytime.Besides,hens in G4groups performed more exploring behavior on wood perches during daytime(P<0.05).In the G8groups,frequency of preening was lower on plastic perches at night(P<0.05),whereas the perching time was longer on wood perches.Consequently,the wood perches were more preferred to plastic or steel ones by laying hens in cages.
