Therapeutic Advances in Respiratory Disease
Abstract:There is growing evidence that proteomic research is an important tool to investigate protein-based mechanisms of human respiratory diseases, identify novel biomarkers for diagnosis, therapy and prognosis, and discover new targets for drug development. The importance of diseases and organ dysfunction has been emphasized by proteomic scientists using a combination of advanced proteomic biotechnology, clinical proteomics, tissue imaging and profiling, and organ dysfunction score systems, to improve the clinical outcomes of these patients [Wang et al. 2006; Yang and Wang, 2006]. The new revolution of proteomic sciences will be to clarify respiratory cell, tissue and organ function-specific proteomic profiles to aid our understanding of molecular mechanisms of airway and lung function and/or dysfunction and resulting therapies. It has been suggested that investigating the correlation of proteomics with organ function is the next step for proteomic and clinical scientists, even though this mission sounds impossible today [Wang, 2007].
