Abstract:John D.Miller,the famous American scholar,initiates the measurement indicator system of civic scientific literacy,which is adopted by many countries and prevailing in the world.The paper discusses the social context in which Miller's theories of civic scientific literacy were created.It analyzes how Miller's theories of civic scientific literacy were formed and what changes have taken place regarding the dimensions of the concept of civic scientific literacy.The paper also reveals the significance of Miller's research that could be used for the relevant work in China for reference.

Abstract:This paper examines the three empirical milestones in the forming of Miller’s system: the first national survey sponsored by NASW in 1957,the three surveys carried out by NSF from 1972 to 1976,and the proposal submitted to NSF by Miller and his colleague in 1979.Besides focusing on the contents of the three stages,this paper also takes the situation of the time into account in order to reveal the relationship between the establishment of Miller’s system and the process of the socialization of science in America.

Abstract:The general three dimensional concepts of civic scientific literacy and related test items from Jon Miller and OECD's PISA are reviewed in this paper.It points out that there are still a lot of theoretical and practical problems to be considered and the basic framework involved should come from science studies,and that China should set up its own measurement and explanation system to cope with the serious asymmetry of its regional social and educational development.The problems found in the test partly reveal the limits ofdeficient modelin the public understanding of science.

Abstract:Civic scientific literacy (CSL) is an important factor for the development of any country, and this is especially true for a country which is under development and at the same time pursues sustainability. In this article, we conduct the firstly systematic study of CSL in China based on survey data in 2013. Under the multi-dimension CSL framework and by using item response theory, we assess the CSL level in China, which can be fairly compared with that in U.S. and Europe (US-EU). The comparable survey results provided a number of implicational findings: for example, the status of CSL of China in 2013 would have ranked as middling and poor compared to the CSL results for the various US-EU countries in 1995 and 2005, respectively. Some group-based analyses were also conducted to show how people's attitudes to the environment and socio-environmental behaviours correlate with the CSL-qualified rate in China. The empirical results provided by this study not only can serve as references for improving CSL in China or other emerging countries that also address the sustainability issues during development, but could also serve as indicators for future studies (e.g., in causational modelling).

Abstract:Building on two decades of national surveys in the United States and two Eurobarometer studies, the history, rationale, and structure of a measure of civic scientific literacy are described. Estimates of the proportion of adults who are very well informed or moderately well informed on the index of civic scientific literacy appear in the literature more frequently, and this paper provides the first comprehensive description and analysis of the civic scientific literacy measure. It is hoped that this analysis and discussion will encourage the inclusion and replication of the measure in a wider range of studies of the public understanding of and attitudes toward science and technology.

Abstract:In March 2006, the State Council of the People's Republic of China issued The Outline of the Action Plan for Improving Scientific Literacy for All (From 2006-2010 and then 2010-2020) (the Scientific Literacy Outline), in which the official notion of scientific literacy named "Public Scientific Literacy in China" was put forward for the first time in the history of China. Subsequently, the program of "Study on Measurement Indicators of Scientific Literacy of Chinese Citizens and its Demonstration" was funded by the China Association for Science and Technology the following September. However, the notion as well as its measurement indicators still need more clarification. After reviewing some relevant literature and introducing the historical background to the concept of "Public Scientific Literacy in China" along with a detailed interpretation of its connotation, the authors do a closer examination of the measurement indicators established by the Research and Development Center for Science Communication at the University of Science and Technology of China, based on a systematical analysis of the sample surveys.

Abstract:Public Understanding of Science, Volume 31, Issue 3, Page 266-272, April 2022. When this journal was launched in 1992, there was a growing consensus among political and academic leaders that a broad understanding of science and technology was necessary for economic prosperity and democratic governance. This was more of an intuitive judgment than an empirical one. After 30 years of data collection and analysis, it appears that these early expectations were largely correct, but the value of the last three decades of social and psychological research is that we now have a firmer empirical basis for these beliefs and expectations. This essay outlines the impact of the growth of science and technology and the development of new information technologies that have changed the ways that individuals obtain information. I will discuss the implications of these changes for democracy in the 21st century.

Abstract:Literary system is referred to the token of the form quality to literary activities at the levels of systems.There are such two levels as concept form and substance shape,including creating spirit,imitating conformation,concept scope,writing format,discourse mode and passing manner.That's to say,literary system has its own prescription.And this prescription is characteristic of self-production,self-qualification,self-sufficiency,self-suitableness and self-expansion.By introducing the concept of literary system,we can acquire the development and deepening of literary research,which,under the background of globalization,has a unique meaning of scholarship.

Abstract:Technical communication students may need to learn how to manage scientific information for a general audience because documents written by and for theoretical and applied scientists, as well as data outputs, provide essential source material for many technical communicators. Hence, technical communication instructors and students might benefit from understanding the production and pedagogy of such scientific textual materials. A key disjunction was identified in the late twentieth century by Carolyn R. Miller and Charles Bazerman (among others): scientific writing does not look, or operate, like humanistic writing, which opens the possibility for criticism and critique rather than understanding and respect. By recognizing that reading practice in the sciences consists largely of scanning for key information and assembling useful datasets, the logic of scientific writing pedagogies becomes more apparent. Technical communication pedagogies can leverage existing advice in the sciences to help students gain fluency in reading texts that are intentionally constructed using difficult jargon in order to maintain the integrity of scientific information.

Abstract:J. Hillis Miller is Distinguished Research Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of California ( Irvine), Chairman of the International Literary Theory Association, academician of the American Academy of Art and Science, member of the "Yale School" of deconstruction, and honorary professor of Tsinghua University. Professor Miller loves literature and has been devoting his life to literary studies. During the past several decades, Miller has frequently participated in various academic activities in China to promote communication in the literary theory circle and comparative literature circle between the United States and China, contributing extraordinarily to the progress in world literary studies. At the 8th Triennial Congress of CCLA and the International Conference in Shenzhen, 2005, he was interviewed by Sheng Anfeng, guest journalist of Foreign Literature Studies and associate professor of English at Tsinghua University. Miller pointed out that people generally misread and misunderstood deconstructionist theory. Most deconstruction theorists, such as Derrida and Miller himself, could well take on the moral/social responsibilities and intervene powerfully in the realities in their own ways. Miller pinpointed the problems confronting comparative literature as a discipline and depicted his ideal university, showing his longing for real academic freedom.

Abstract:Hillis Miller is one of the most important literary critics in the contemporary West.He inherited and developed Georges Poulet's literary concept of phenomenology in the early period,Derrida and others' deconstructionist literary concept in the middle,and Austin and others' speech act theory in the later years.His literary concepts can be regarded as the epitome of contemporary American and even Western literary concepts.Chinese and foreign scholars have written much on his phenomenologist and deconstructionist literary concepts,but have not yet paid much attention to the literary concept of his speech act theory.This paper intends to discuss the subject and expound the theoretical innovation of his speech act literary criticism.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to discuss the basic theoretical issues on disciplinary development of land science, and to promote its maturity and improvement. Comparative research method and theoretical analysis method are employed in this paper. The results show that the maturity of land science is still quite low due to the lack of theoretical system and disciplinary paradigm with inherent consistency, the increase of research fields but the decrease of research depth, and the emphasis on application projects but the ignorance on academic study. Excessive broad research contents have impacted the development of land science. The path and experience of water conservancy science around the engineering categories to promote discipline construction and the development is worth learning and using for reference. The conclusion of the paper is that as the logic origin of land science, land use conforms to the four regulations. The name of the discipline can be land science and engineering, the core contents are formation and evolution, structure and function, utilization and control, reclamation and construction, and their relations that can be expressed with a simple 4-corner cone model. Land science and engineering can be divided into four secondary discipline including land science, land consolidation and rehabilitation engineering, land survey and control engineering, land use and planning. The methodologies of land science and engineering should be a combination of spatial research, conjugate analysis, traceable study and positivism. The theoretical framework of this discipline can be built up based on three aspects including land structure and function, land evolution and control, land carrying capacity and sustainability.

Abstract:This article bases on the database of the full-texts articles from 1979 to 2005 with scientific literacy as superscription in the China National Knowledge Infrastructure.By means of the quantitive and qualitive analysis of the total quantity,time distribution,source institutions and subject matter,it reflects that first,the discussion of scientific literacy in the domestic academic field has already have a certainty scale,but the specialized research only possesses a small proportion;second,the production centralizes in the recent ten years,the state of the development is all right and the research is calefactive;third,researchers are mostly from university、college and junior college;fourth,with regard to the content,there are comparatively some weaknesses in the theoretical construct of this matter,and to the object,minors are laid much more store by the researchers.

Abstract:In the first decade after 2000, the idea of "the end of literature" proposed by J. Hillis Miller aroused widespread controversy in Chinese academe. This article seeks to reiterate the original meaning of Miller's statement while tracing the original Chinese context from which this debate arose. The article points out that the real reason for this debate is not that there are different understandings of Miller's term the end of literature but that Chinese academics have become dissatisfied with and anxious about the increasingly marginal status of literature. This debate has coincided historically with scholarly concerns over visual culture, the aestheticization of everyday life, cultural studies, and globalization. Each of these discussions contains related insights into the future development and transformation of literary theory and its disciplinary boundaries.

Abstract:The study investigates in the Benchmark for Scientific Literacy of Chinese Citizens. The background of issuing the Benchmark, its procedure, and contents are analyzed; the key for analysis revolves around the huge debate triggered by the Benchmark on Chinese internet. The debate can be traced to historical discussions in China, regarding the relation between science and humanity, the boundary of science, and the goals for science education. We recognize that in the anxiety for modernization since 1840s in China, the gap between science and humanity studies persists; scientism still dominates the dialogue. Instead, we value pluralism in science and scientific literacy, and emphasize locality as a framework in understanding and assessing traditional Chinese knowledge and practices, including yin-yang theory, the five phases theory, and feng shui. We propose that good science education aims at eliminating scientism, enriching public understandings on the history of science, the culture, and philosophy of science.
