QuCLEAR: Clifford Extraction and Absorption for Significant Reduction in Quantum Circuit Size

Abstract:Quantum computing carries significant potential for addressing practical problems. However, currently available quantum devices suffer from noisy quantum gates, which degrade the fidelity of executed quantum circuits. Therefore, quantum circuit optimization is crucial for obtaining useful results. In this paper, we present QuCLEAR, a compilation framework designed to optimize quantum circuits. QuCLEAR significantly reduces both the two-qubit gate count and the circuit depth through two novel optimization steps. First, we introduce the concept of Clifford Extraction, which extracts Clifford subcircuits to the end of the circuit while optimizing the gates. Second, since Clifford circuits are classically simulatable, we propose Clifford Absorption, which efficiently processes the extracted Clifford subcircuits classically. We demonstrate our framework on quantum simulation circuits, which have wide-ranging applications in quantum chemistry simulation, many-body physics, and combinatorial optimization problems. Near-term algorithms such as VQE and QAOA also fall within this category. Experimental results across various benchmarks show that QuCLEAR achieves up to a $77.7\%$ reduction in CNOT gate count and up to an $84.1\%$ reduction in entangling depth compared to state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:Quantum state preparation initializes the quantum registers and is essential for running quantum algorithms. Designing state preparation circuits that entangle qubits efficiently with fewer two-qubit gates enhances accuracy and alleviates coupling constraints on devices. Existing methods synthesize an initial circuit and leverage compilers to reduce the circuit's gate count while preserving the unitary equivalency. In this study, we identify numerous conditions within the quantum circuit where breaking local unitary equivalences does not alter the overall outcome of the state preparation (i.e., don't cares). We introduce a peephole optimization algorithm that identifies such unitaries for replacement in the original circuit. Exploiting these don't care conditions, our algorithm achieves a 36% reduction in the number of two-qubit gates compared to prior methods.

Abstract:Quantum computing is an emerging technology in which quantum mechanical properties are suitably utilized to perform certain compute-intensive operations faster than classical computers. Quantum algorithms are designed as a combination of quantum circuits that each require a large number of quantum gates, which is a challenge considering the limited number of qubit resources available in quantum computing systems. Our work proposes a technique to optimize quantum arithmetic algorithms by reducing the hardware resources and the number of qubits based on ZX calculus. We have utilised ZX calculus rewrite rules for the optimization of fault-tolerant quantum multiplier circuits where we are able to achieve a significant reduction in the number of ancilla bits and T-gates as compared to the originally required numbers to achieve fault-tolerance. Our work is the first step in the series of arithmetic circuit optimization using graphical rewrite tools and it paves the way for advancing the optimization of various complex quantum circuits and establishing the potential for new applications of the same.

Abstract:Efficient quantum circuit optimization schemes are central to quantum simulation of strongly interacting quantum many body systems. Here, we present an optimization algorithm which combines machine learning techniques and tensor network methods. The said algorithm runs on classical hardware and finds shallow, accurate quantum circuits by minimizing scalar cost functions. The gradients relevant for the optimization process are computed using the reverse mode automatic differentiation technique implemented on top of the time-evolved block decimation algorithm for matrix product states. A variation of the ADAM optimizer is utilized to perform a gradient descent on the manifolds of charge conserving unitary operators to find the optimal quantum circuit. The efficacy of this approach is demonstrated by finding the ground states of spin chain Hamiltonians for the Ising, three-state Potts and the massive Schwinger models for system sizes up to L=100. The first ten excited states of these models are also obtained for system sizes L=24. All circuits achieve high state fidelities within reasonable CPU time and modest memory requirements.

Abstract:There is no unique way to encode a quantum algorithm into a quantum circuit. With limited qubit counts, connectivity, and coherence times, a quantum circuit optimization is essential to make the best use of near-term quantum devices. We introduce a new circuit optimizer called AQCEL, which aims to remove redundant controlled operations from controlled gates, depending on initial states of the circuit. Especially, the AQCEL can remove unnecessary qubit controls from multi-controlled gates in polynomial computational resources, even when all the relevant qubits are entangled, by identifying zero-amplitude computational basis states using a quantum computer. As a benchmark, the AQCEL is deployed on a quantum algorithm designed to model final state radiation in high energy physics. For this benchmark, we have demonstrated that the AQCEL-optimized circuit can produce equivalent final states with much smaller number of gates. Moreover, when deploying AQCEL with a noisy intermediate scale quantum computer, it efficiently produces a quantum circuit that approximates the original circuit with high fidelity by truncating low-amplitude computational basis states below certain thresholds. Our technique is useful for a wide variety of quantum algorithms, opening up new possibilities to further simplify quantum circuits to be more effective for real devices.

Abstract:Quantum information processing is expressed using quantum bits (qubits) and quantum gates which are arranged in the terms of quantum circuits. Here, each qubit is associated to a quantum circuit wire which is used to conduct the desired operations. Most of the existing quantum circuits allocate a single quantum circuit wire for each qubit and, hence, introduce a significant overhead. In fact, qubits are usually not needed during the entire computation but only between their initialization and measurement. Before and after that, corresponding wires may be used by other qubits. In this work, we propose a solution which exploits this fact in order to optimize the design of quantum circuits with respect to the required wires. To this end, we introduce a representation of the lifetimes of all qubits which is used to analyze the respective need for wires. Based on this analysis, a method is proposed which "recycles" the available wires and, by this, reduces the size of the resulting circuit. Experimental evaluations based on established reversible and fault-tolerant quantum circuits confirm that the proposed solution reduces the amount of wires by more than 90% compared to unoptimized quantum circuits.

Efficient Quantum Circuit Cutting by Neglecting Basis Elements

Abstract:Quantum circuit cutting has been proposed to help execute large quantum circuits using only small and noisy machines. Intuitively, cutting a qubit wire can be thought of as classically passing information of a quantum state along each element in a basis set. As the number of cuts increase, the number of quantum degrees of freedom needed to be passed through scales exponentially. We propose a simple reduction scheme to lower the classical and quantum resources required to perform a cut. Particularly, we recognize that for some cuts, certain basis element might pass "no information" through the qubit wire and can effectively be neglected. We empirically demonstrate our method on circuit simulators as well as IBM quantum hardware, and we observed up to 33 percent reduction in wall time without loss of accuracy.

Abstract:The time evolution of quantum many-body systems is one of the most promising applications for near-term quantum computers. However, the utility of current quantum devices is strongly hampered by the proliferation of hardware errors. The minimization of the circuit depth for a given quantum algorithm is therefore highly desirable, since shallow circuits generally are less vulnerable to decoherence. Recently, it was shown that variational circuits are a promising approach to outperform current state-of-the-art methods such as Trotter decomposition, although the optimal choice of parameters is a computationally demanding task. In this work, we demonstrate a simplification of the variational optimization of circuits implementing the time evolution operator of local Hamiltonians by directly encoding constraints of the physical system under consideration. We study the expressibility of such constrained variational circuits for different models and constraints. Our results show that the encoding of constraints allows a reduction of optimization cost by more than one order of magnitude and scalability to arbitrary large system sizes, without loosing accuracy in most systems. Furthermore, we discuss the exceptions in locally-constrained systems and provide an explanation by means of an restricted lightcone width after incorporating the constraints into the circuits.

Abstract:The fragile nature of quantum information limits our ability to construct large quantities of quantum bits suitable for quantum computing. An important goal, therefore, is to minimize the amount of resources required to implement quantum algorithms, many of which are serial in nature and leave large numbers of qubits idle much of the time unless compression techniques are used. Furthermore, quantum error-correcting codes, which are required to reduce the effects of noise, introduce additional resource overhead. We consider a strategy for quantum circuit optimization based on topological deformation in the surface code, one of the best performing and most practical quantum error-correcting codes. Specifically, we examine the problem of minimizing computation time on a two-dimensional qubit lattice of arbitrary, but fixed dimension, and propose two algorithms for doing so.
Optimizing Quantum Fourier Transformation (QFT) Kernels for Modern NISQ and FT Architectures

Abstract:Rapid development in quantum computing leads to the appearance of several quantum applications. Quantum Fourier Transformation (QFT) sits at the heart of many of these applications. Existing work leverages SAT solver or heuristics to generate a hardware-compliant circuit for QFT by inserting SWAP gates to remap logical qubits to physical qubits. However, they might face problems such as long compilation time due to the huge search space for SAT solver or suboptimal outcome in terms of the number of cycles to finish all gate operations. In this paper, we propose a domain-specific hardware mapping approach for QFT. We unify our insight of relaxed ordering and unit exploration in QFT to search for a qubit mapping solution with the help of program synthesis tools. Our method is the first one that guarantees linear-depth QFT circuits for Google Sycamore, IBM heavy-hex, and the lattice surgery, with respect to the number of qubits. Compared with state-of-the-art approaches, our method can save up to 53% in SWAP gate and 92% in depth.

Abstract:Optimization of circuits is an essential task for both quantum and classical computers to improve their efficiency. In contrast, classical logic optimization is known to be difficult, and a lot of heuristic approaches have been developed so far. In this study, we define and construct a quantum algorithmic primitive called quantum circuit unoptimization, which makes a given quantum circuit complex by introducing some redundancies while preserving circuit equivalence, i.e., the inverse operation of circuit optimization. Using quantum circuit unoptimization, we propose the quantum circuit equivalence test, a decision problem contained both in the NP and BQP classes but is not trivially included in the P class. Furthermore, as a practical application, we construct concrete unoptimization recipes to generate compiler benchmarks and evaluate circuit optimization performance using Qiskit and Pytket. Our numerical simulations demonstrate that quantum circuit unoptimizer systematically generates redundant circuits that are challenging for compilers to optimize, which can be used to compare the performance of different compilers and improve them. We also offer potential applications of quantum circuit unoptimization, such as generating quantum advantageous machine learning datasets and quantum computer fidelity benchmarks.

Abstract:In order to solve the fault tolerance and reliability problems of quantum circuit, a series of structural equivalence rules and optimization operation strategies of quantum circuit are proposed to minimize the number of T gates, increase T gate depth, minimize circuit level, reduce fault tolerance implementation costs and increase circuit reliability. In order to satisfy the nearest neighbor constraints of some quantum systems, a LNN (linear nearest neighbor) arrangement algorithm based on Clifford + T gate quantum circuit is presented. Experiments are done on some benchmarks of RevLib, the results show that the optimization rate of most functions and the running time of the algorithm are better than those of the existing literature.

Abstract:We propose several methods for optimizing the number of qubits in a quantum circuit while preserving the number of non-Clifford gates. One of our approaches consists in reversing, as much as possible, the gadgetization of Hadamard gates, which is a procedure used by some $T$-count optimizers to circumvent Hadamard gates at the expense of additional qubits. We prove the NP-hardness of this problem and we present an algorithm for solving it. We also propose a more general approach to optimize the number of qubits by showing how it relates to the problem of finding a minimal-width path-decomposition of the graph associated with a given ZX-diagram. This approach can be used to optimize the number of qubits for any computational model that can natively be depicted in ZX-calculus, such as the Pauli Fusion computational model which can represent lattice surgery operations. We also show how this method can be used to efficiently optimize the number of qubits in a quantum circuit by using the ZX-calculus as an intermediate representation.

Quantum Circuit Optimization through Iteratively Pre-Conditioned Gradient Descent

Abstract:For typical quantum subroutines in the gate-based model of quantum computing, explicit decompositions of circuits in terms of single-qubit and two-qubit entangling gates may exist. However, they often lead to large-depth circuits that are challenging for noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) hardware. Additionally, exact decompositions might only exist for some modular quantum circuits. Therefore, it is essential to find gate combinations that approximate these circuits to high fidelity with potentially low depth, for example, using gradient-based optimization. Traditional optimizers often run into problems of slow convergence requiring many iterations, and perform poorly in the presence of noise. Here we present iteratively preconditioned gradient descent (IPG) for optimizing quantum circuits and demonstrate performance speedups for state preparation and implementation of quantum algorithmic subroutines. IPG is a noise-resilient, higher-order algorithm that has shown promising gains in convergence speed for classical optimizations, converging locally at a linear rate for convex problems and superlinearly when the solution is unique. Specifically, we show an improvement in fidelity by a factor of $10^4$ for preparing a 4-qubit W state and a maximally entangled 5-qubit GHZ state compared to other commonly used classical optimizers tuning the same ansatz. We also show gains for optimizing a unitary for a quantum Fourier transform using IPG, and report results of running such optimized circuits on IonQ's quantum processing unit (QPU). Such faster convergence with promise for noise-resilience could provide advantages for quantum algorithms on NISQ hardware, especially since the cost of running each iteration on a quantum computer is substantially higher than the classical optimizer step.

Abstract:We present qubit logic on qudits (QLOQ), a compression scheme in which the qubits from a hardware agnostic circuit are divided into groups of various sizes, and each group is mapped to a physical qudit for computation. QLOQ circuits have qubit-logic inputs, outputs, and gates, making them compatible with existing qubit-based algorithms and Hamiltonians. We show that arbitrary qubit-logic unitaries can in principle be implemented with significantly fewer two-level (qubit) physical entangling gates in QLOQ than in qubit encoding. We achieve this advantage in practice for two applications: variational quantum algorithms, and unitary decomposition. The variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) for LiH took 5 hours using QLOQ on one of Quandela's cloud-accessible photonic quantum computers, whereas it would have taken 4.39 years in qubit encoding. We also provide a QLOQ version of the Quantum Shannon Decomposition, which not only outperforms previous qudit-based proposals, but also beats the theoretical lower bound on the CNOT cost of unitary decomposition in qubit encoding.

A New Optimization Model for Multiple-Control Toffoli Quantum Circuit Design

Abstract:As quantum technology is advancing, the efficient design of quantum circuits has become an important area of research. This paper provides an introduction to the MCT quantum circuit design problem for reversible Boolean functions without assuming a prior background in quantum computing. While this is a well-studied problem, optimization models that minimize the true objective have only been explored recently. This paper introduces a new optimization model and symmetry-breaking constraints that improve solving time by up to two orders of magnitude compared to earlier work when a Constraint Programming solver is used. Experiments with up to seven qubits and using up to 15 quantum gates result in several new best-known circuits, obtained by any method, for well-known benchmarks. Finally, an extensive comparison with other approaches shows that optimization models may require more time but can provide superior circuits with optimality guarantees.

Abstract:Optimizing quantum circuits is critical: the number of quantum operations needs to be minimized for a successful evaluation of a circuit on a quantum processor. In this paper we unify two disparate ideas for optimizing quantum circuits, rewrite rules, which are fast standard optimizer passes, and unitary synthesis, which is slow, requiring a search through the space of circuits. We present a clean, unifying framework for thinking of rewriting and resynthesis as abstract circuit transformations. We then present a radically simple algorithm, GUOQ, for optimizing quantum circuits that exploits the synergies of rewriting and resynthesis. Our extensive evaluation demonstrates the ability of GUOQ to strongly outperform existing optimizers on a wide range of benchmarks.

Powerful Quantum Circuit Resizing with Resource Efficient Synthesis

Abstract:In the noisy intermediate-scale quantum era, mid-circuit measurement and reset operations facilitate novel circuit optimization strategies by reducing a circuit's qubit count in a method called resizing. This paper introduces two such algorithms. The first one leverages gate-dependency rules to reduce qubit count by 61.6% or 45.3% when optimizing depth as well. Based on numerical instantiation and synthesis, the second algorithm finds resizing opportunities in previously unresizable circuits via dependency rules and other state-of-the-art tools. This resizing algorithm reduces qubit count by 20.7% on average for these previously impossible-to-resize circuits.
