Abstract:The vacuum ultraviolet (vuv) fluorescences from ionic rare-gas alkali excimer molecules were observed by a relativistic electron beam excitation. A gas mixture of xenon or krypton with a hot vapour of caesium was excited to obtain a diffuse emission band centred at 159 nm from Xe/Cs and 131 nm from Kr/Cs. The two emission bands were assigned to the 2(1)Sigma(+) --> 1(1)Sigma(+) transitions of the Xe+Cs and Kr+Cs ionic excimers. The observed double peaks emission bands in the Xe/Li and Kr/Li gas mixtures are assigned to the 2(1)Sigma(+) --> 1(1)Sigma(+) and 1(1)Pi --> 1(1)Sigma(+) transitions of the Xe+Li and Kr+Li ions.

Abstract:Bound-free vacuum uv emissions from rare-gas alkali ionic excimers were observed by relativistic electron beam pumping of gas mixtures of Xe or Kr with hot cesium vapor. The observed two diffuse emission bands centered at 159 and 131 nm are assigned to be the 2 1Σ+→1 1Σ+ transition of (XeCs)+ and (KrCs)+ ionic excimers, respectively.

Abstract:Continuous radiation from a new kind of ionic excimer, krypton fluoride, was observed under the excitation of soft X ray from laser produced plasma, when the target chamber was filled with mixed gas of Kr0.4kPa/He 1.37kPa/NF 0.23kPa, and the laser power density was 4.9��10 10W/cm 2. The peak of the radiation was near 148nm. The experiments also show that the fluorescence of krypton fluoride ionic excimer is produced 50 ns later after laser incidence, and the recombination radiation of plasma is produced 200ns later. The kinetics was studied theoretically and experimentally.

Abstract:We present VUV observations of transitions between doubly excited sextet states in O3+, F4+ and Ne5+. Spectra were produced by collisions of an oxygen, uorine and neon beam with a nitrogen gas jet target. Prepared beam-gas experiment yields new and explicit information on doubly core-excited ions. Some observed lines were assigned to the 1s2s2p3 6S-1s2p33s, 3d 6P electric-dipole transitions in O3+, F4+ and Ne5+. Three lines have been reassigned. Present data are the first explicit measurements on transitions between sextet states in boronlike ions by beam-gas spectroscopy.

Abstract:The vacuum UV fluorescences from rare-gas-alkali ionic excimer Kr+Li were observed by the relativistic electron beam excitation of a gas mixture of krypton with a hot vapor of lithium. The observed two diffuse emission bands centered at 147 and 149 nm were assigned to the 21Σ+→11Σ+ and 11Π→11Σ+ transitions of the Kr+Li ionic excimer. A maximum net gain coefficient about 0.05 cm-1 for the 147-nm band was obtained in the present experiment. Another two similar diffuse bands observed at 186 and 189 nm from Xe/Li gas mixtures were assigned to the same transitions of the Xe+Li ionic excimer molecule.

Abstract:We present observations of VUV transitions between doubly excited sextet states in O, IV, F V and Ne VI. Spectra were produced by collisions of an O+, (FH)(+) and Ne+ beam with a thin carbon foil target. Some observed lines are assigned to the 1s2s2p(2)3p L-6-1 s2p(3)3p P-6 electric-dipole transitions in 0 IV, F V and Ne VI, and are compared with the results of multi-configuration Hartree-Fock (with QED and higher-order corrections) and multi-configuration Dirac-Fock calculations. 31 new lines have been identified. The sextet systems of boronlike ions are possible candidates for x-ray and VUV lasers.

Abstract:The microdischarge process and the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) emission properties of dielectric-barrier-discharge-type flat fluorescent lamps (FFLs) are investigated by shooting the spatiotemporally resolved images of a microdischarge in an FFL filled with Ne-Xe (10%) gas mixture of 85 kPa with a high-speed intensified charge-coupled device camera and by measuring the VUV emission spectra at various gas pressures and driving parameters with a vacuum monochromator and a photomultiplier tube. It was found that a microdischarge was generated at a protrusion on the cathode at first, diffused to the anode side afterward, and exhibited a uniform glow discharge pattern. The measured results of the VUV spectra show that, as the total gas pressure increases, the 147-nm resonance emission gradually decreases, while the continuum emission centered at 173 nm rapidly increases, which cause both of the intensity and the efficiency of the VUV emission to increase. As the driving voltage amplitude increases, there exists a maximum VUV emission efficiency value. At a total gas pressure of 70 kPa, as the driving pulse frequency increases from 50 to 130 kHz, the spectral intensities of the VUV emission initially increase and then gradually tend to saturate at 90 kHz.

Abstract:Beams of high-energy heavy ions (Ar and U) from the UNILAC accelerator have been used to excite rare gases at pressures near 1 bar. The dominant spectroscopic feature observed in Ar, Kr, and Xe gases was molecular excimer emission at the second excimer continuum at 130, 150, and 170 nm, respectively. The excimer radiation was studied as a function of time (with respect to the excitation pulse), ion-beam current, pressure, and excitation density. The efficiency of excimer production from heavy-ion-beam energy was found to be several percent. Details of spectral shape, especially the ratio of first-to-second continuum emission, were found to depend on pressure and exciting beam type.
VUV Luminescent Properties of Rare Earth Fluorides and Borates

Abstract:The quantum cutting effect was observed in Eu3+ doped hexagonal NaGdF4. Upon VUV excitation to the (6)G(J) level of Gd3+, two red photons are emitted by Eu3+ through an efficient two-step energy transfer process. The quantum efficiency of this material is about 160%. Cubic NaGdF4 contains considerable amount of oxygen impurity, so that the 4f-5d transition moves to lower energy (177nm), which fits the energy of the VUV photons from discharge of inert gas; the color purity of the emission of cubic NaGdF4 is also improved by oxygen doping. The photon cascade emission of Gd3+ ions was observed in GdBaB9O16. Under the 202 nm excitation, a red and a near infrared radiative transition from (6)G(J) states, (6)G(J) --> I-6(J) and (6)G(J) --> P-6(J) occur followed by an ultraviolet emission of P-6(J) --> S-8(7/2).

Abstract:The excitation-, reflection- and emission-spectra of Eu2+ activated halophosphates (Ca, Sr)5(PO4)3Cl and (Ca, Sr, Ba)5(PO4)3Cl are measured by using the synchrotron radiation in the energy range up to vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) region. The absorption spectra are also calculated according to the Kramers–Kronig relation. A model describing the excitation and emission processes of Eu2+ in halophosphates is suggested.

Abstract:Fluorescence excitation spectra of xenon clusters with an average cluster size N up to 600 atoms/cluster have been recorded in the VUV spectral range from 100 to 155 nm. Below the ionization limit strong absorption bands corresponding for small clusters to molecular and for large clusters to excitonic bands of the solid are observed. Above ≈ 9.5 eV a broad continuum appears for clusters larger than approximately 20 atoms/cluster which is related to the formation of the conduction band.

Abstract:The luminescence spectra of PbFCl single crystal under the excitation of synchrotron radiation vacuum ultraviolet–ultra violet (VUV–UV) were investigated. The emission spectra of PbFCl single crystal show a broad violet band peaking at 400nm having decreasing intensity with the rising temperature being from 20 to 293K under the excitation of VUV–UV. A weak ultraviolet band peaking at 325nm, which can be ascribed to the cation exciton emission of Pb2+, appears at 20K under the excitation at wavelength shorter than 247nm, but is completely quenched above 60K. The violet band emission due to energy transfer from cation exciton was observed, which became more effective above 60K. The luminescence in the violet band may be due to STE luminescence or is probably associated with the Pb2+ ion close to the Schottky-like defect.

Abstract:The photoionization curves for vinylchloride and its abundant fragment ions, especially (C2H3)(+) and (C2H2)(+), have been measured with synchrotron radiation in the photon energy range from 8-20eV on the photochemistry station at HESYRL. The structure of the photoionization efficiency curves (PIE) for (C2H3)(+) and (C2H2)(+) were firstly exhibited and explained by the vertical ionization potentials in terms of different ionization processes.

Abstract:To understand the optical properties of atoms in solid state matrices, the absorption, excitation and emission spectra of rubidium doped thin-films of argon, krypton and xenon were investigated in detail. A two-dimensional spectral analysis extends earlier reports on the excitation and emission properties of rubidium in rare-gas hosts. We found that the doped crystals of krypton and xenon exhibit a simple absorption-emission relation, whereas rubidium in argon showed more complicated spectral structures. Our sample preparation employed in the present work yielded different results for the Ar crystal, but our peak positions were consistent with the prediction based on the linear extrapolation of Xe and Kr data. We also observed a bleaching behavior in rubidium excitation spectra, which suggests a population transfer from one to another spectral feature due to hole-burning. The observed optical response implies that rubidium in rare-gas thin-films is detectable with extremely high sensitivity, possibly down to a single atom level, in low concentration samples.

Abstract:Excitation and emission spectra of new borate La2CaB10O19 doped Eu3+ in VUV-VIS range, high resolution emission spectra at room temperature and lifetime of Eu3+ were investigated. The emission line at about 616 nm attributed to the D-5(0) - F-7(2) transition of Eu3+ is the most intense emission of Eu3+. The broad band at about 244 nm is originated from charge transition band (CTB) of O-2 --> Eu3+. According to the numbers of spectral lines D-5(0) - F-7(0) and D-5(0) - F-7(1) in high-resolution spectrum, Eu3+ ions occupy two crystallographic sites. The lifetimes of D-5(0) - F-7(0) transition of Eu3+ of two kinds of lattice sites are individually 2.1 and 2.6 ms, and both are exponential decay. In the VUV excitation spectrum, complicated band between 130 and 170 nm consists of host absorption and f-d transition of Eu3+.
Superradiance of Low-Density Frenkel Excitons in a Crystal Slab of Three-Level Atoms: the Quantum Interference Effect

Abstract:We systematically study the fluorescence of low density Frenkel excitons in a crystal slab containing N_T V-type three-level atoms. Based on symmetric quasi-spin realization of SU(3) in large N limit, the two-mode exciton operators are invoked to depict various collective excitations of the collection of these V-type atoms starting from their ground state. By making use of the rotating wave approximation, the light intensity of radiation for the single lattice layer is investigated in detail. As a quantum coherence effect, the quantum beat phenomenon is discussed in detail for different initial excitonic states. We also test the above results analytically without the consideration of the rotating wave approximation and the self-interaction of radiance field is also included.

Abstract:In the present paper, we investigate the time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy of doubly excited states of helium atoms by solving the time-dependent two-electron Schrodinger equation numerically based on a one-dimensional model. The helium atoms are subjected to an extreme ultraviolet (XUV) attosecond pulse and a time-delayed infrared (IR) few-cycle laser pulse. A superposition of doubly excited states populated by the XUV pulse is identified, which interferes with the direct ionization pathway leading to Fano resonance profiles in the photoabsorption spectrum. In the presence of an IR laser, however, the Fano line profiles are strongly modified: A shifting, splitting, and broadening of the original absorption lines is observed when the XUV attosecond pulse and infrared few-cycle laser pulse overlap in time, which is in good agreement with recent experimental results. At certain time delays, we observe symmetric Lorentz, inverted Fano profiles, and even negative absorption cross sections indicating that the XUV light can be amplified during the interaction with atoms. We further prove that the above pictures are general for different doubly excited states by suitably varying the frequency of the IR field to coherently couple the corresponding states.

Abstract:We report data on the luminescence spectra associated with photochromic centers in X-ray irradiated calcium fluoride crystals doped with Lu ions. Irradiation in low energy photochromic centers absorption band excites emission, which can be identify with transitions into photochromic centers. Ab initio calculation of absorption spectrum of photochromic center agrees rather well with experimental data.
