Abstract:Haihe plain is an important food production area in China, facing an increasing water shortage. The water used for agriculture accounts for about 70% of total water resources. Thus, it is critical to optimize the irrigation scheduling for saving water and increasing crop water productivity (CWP). This study firstly simulated crop yield and CWP for winter wheat in historical scenario during 1961-2005 for Haihe plain using previously well-established SWAT model. Then scenarios under historical irrigation (scenario 1) and sufficient irrigation (scenario 2) were respectively simulated both with sufficient fertilizer. The crop yield in scenario 2 was considered as the potential crop yield. The optimal irrigation scheduling with sufficient fertilizer (scenario 3) was explored by iteratively adjusting irrigation scheduling based on the scenario 1 and previous studies related to water stress on crop growth. Results showed that net irrigation amount was reduced 23.1% in scenario 3 for winter wheat when compared with scenario 1. The CWP was 12.1% higher with very slight change of crop yield. Using optimal irrigation scheduling could save 8.8&#215;108 m3 irrigation water and reduce about 16.3% groundwater over-exploitation in winter wheat growth period. The corresponding yield was 18.5% less than potential yield for winter wheat but using less irrigation water. Therefore, it could be considered that the optimal irrigation was reasonable, which provided beneficial suggestions for increasing efficiency of agricultural water use with sustainable crop yield in Haihe plain.
Application of a simulation based optimization model for winter wheat irrigation scheduling in North China

Abstract:Irrigation needs to be scheduled properly for winter wheat, the main food crop in North China where the water resources are limited. We optimized the irrigation timing of crops under limited water supply by integrating a soil water balance model, dated water production function with cumulative function of water sensitivity index, and a nonlinear search method. The optimization produced the optimal irrigation date series with the predetermined irrigation quota for each application, which aims to obtain higher crop yield with limited irrigation water and be convenient for irrigation management. This simulation–optimization model was used to investigate the irrigation scheduling of winter wheat in Xiaohe irrigation Area in North China. Results show that optimal irrigation date series, corresponding relative yield and relative evapotranspiration are all closely related to the irrigation quota and initial soil water conditions. For rich and medium initial soil water conditions in medium precipitation year, it takes four times of irrigation (60mm each time) after greening in order to obtain higher crop yield. But it increases to five times for poor initial condition. With limited irrigation water, irrigation should generally be applied in the preferential sequence of early May or late April (in the jointing stage), then mid and late May (in the heading stage), and finally March (in the greening stage). Irrigation should be applied earlier with lower initial soil water storage. Higher irrigation quota increases the crop yield but tends to decrease the marginal value, especially when irrigation quota exceeds 180mm. The study also indicates that the optimized relative yield is generally higher than that obtained in field experiment. Based on the optimization, we proposed to use the quadratic polynomial function to describe the frontier water production function, which shows the mathematical relationship between optimized relative yield and relative evapotranspiration.

Simulation of Winter Wheat Growth Dynamics and Optimization of Water and Nitrogen Application Systems Based on the Aquacrop Model

Abstract:Winter wheat is the main grain crop in the Yellow River Basin, and optimizing water and nitrogen management can not only improve the yield, but also reduce water and fertilizer waste and environmental pollution. Using two years of winter wheat field trials, the Aquacrop model was calibrated and validated, and 36 different water and nitrogen application scenarios were simulated and analyzed. Among them, the field trials were divided into three N application levels, and three lower limits of water control. The results showed that: (1) the model has good applicability to simulate the growth process of winter wheat in the Yellow River Basin. (2) At a constant level of irrigation or nitrogen application, crop yield initially increased and subsequently decreased with the enhancement of either irrigation or nitrogen application. Finally, through response surface analysis of regression equations, the recommended irrigation volume was determined to be between 296 and 303 mm, and the fertilizer application rate was set between 229 and 261 kg/ha. At these levels, the PFP could achieve over 60% of its maximum. This research provides a theoretical basis for the water-saving, fertilizer-saving and high-yield water and fertilizer management system of winter wheat in the irrigated area of the Yellow River Basin.

Abstract:Continuous cropping of winter wheat and summer maize is the main cropping pattern in North China Plain lying in a seasonal frost area. Irrigation scheduling of one crop will influence soil water regime and irrigation scheduling of the subsequent crop. Therefore, irrigation scheduling of winter wheat and maize should be studied as a whole. Considering the meteorological and crop characteristics of the area lying in a seasonal frost area, a cropping year is divided into crop growing period and frost period. Model of simultaneous moisture and heat transfer (SMHT) for the frost period and model of soil water transfer (SWT) for the crop growing period were developed, and used jointly for the simulation of soil water dynamics and irrigation scheduling for a whole cropping year. The model was calibrated and validated with field experiment of winter wheat and maize in Beijing, China. Then the model was applied to the simulation of water dynamics and irrigation scheduling with different precipitation and irrigation treatments. From the simulation results, precipitation can meet the crop water requirement of maize to a great extent, and irrigation at the seeding stage may be necessary. Precipitation and irrigation had no significant influence on evaporation and transpiration of maize. On the other hand, irrigation scheduling of winter wheat mainly depends on irrigation standard. Irrigation at the seeding stage and before soil freezing is usually necessary. For high irrigation standard, four times of irrigation are required after greening. While for medium irrigation, only once (rainy year) or twice (medium and dry years) of irrigation is required after greening. Transpiration of winter wheat is very close for high and medium irrigation, but it decreases significantly for low irrigation and will result in a reduction of crop yield. Irrigation with proper time and amount is necessary for winter wheat. Considering irrigation quota and crop transpiration comprehensively, medium irrigation is recommended for the irrigation of winter wheat in the studying area, which can reduce the irrigation quota of over 150mm with little water stress for crop growth.

Abstract:The double cropping of winter wheat and summer maize is the major schema in the North China Plain. As the seasonal freezing in this region, a cropping year is divided into two periods, i. e. , crop growing period and frozen period. The model of soil water movement for crop growing period and the model of soil moisture and heat transfer (SMHT) for the frozen period were established repectively. The former was based on Richards equation of soil water movement with sink term and composed of soil hydraulic properties, reference vapotranspiration , soil surface evaporation and crop transpiration allocation and root water-uptake models. An implicit mass-conserving finite volume method (FVM) procedure was used to solve the model. The SMHT model was adopted for soil water movement in winter, and a model of water and heat exchange between soil and atmosphere in freezing and thawing period was used to estimates the upper boundary conditions for SMHT model. The models were calibrated with the data from of the Yongledian experimental station near Beijing. The field water status under different precipitation and irrigation schedules were simulated. The impacts of precipitation and irrigation on field evapotranspiration, soil water use and deep seepage were analyzed based on the simulation results.

Abstract:Achieving high crop yield with less irrigation is important to improve water productivity (WP) and irrigation water productivity (IWP) in water-limited regions in the North China Plain (NCP). Coupling the impacts of precipitation and irrigation on the crop yield is, therefore, an essential tool for understanding crop response to different water sources and forecasting irrigation water requirements. In this study, the CERES-Wheat model was used to simulate winter wheat yield, WP, and IWP under different irrigation schedules (no, deficit, full, and automatic irrigation) and three precipitation category years (wet, normal, and dry years). Results showed that the amount of precipitation fluctuated significantly over site-years, leading to considerably varied irrigation water requirements. For the wet year, deficit two irrigations at greening and jointing stages (treatment 11) alleviated water stress during key winter wheat growth periods, contributing to increasing biomass, yield, WP, and IWP. However, when reducing the irrigation amount by 50%, a significant increase in WP and a nonsignificant difference in yield were found at Fengqiu and Shangqiu. Two irrigation applications 11 improved pre-anthesis biomass and wheat yield while achieving high WP and IWP in normal and dry years (except for extreme drought conditions). The finding also indicated that the distribution of growing season precipitation exerted a significant impact on irrigation time. If the early season precipitation was low, shifting the irrigation to an earlier time to ensure pre-anthesis water requirements, which can synchronously achieve the goals of increasing WP and maintaining a higher yield. In conclusion, optimizing irrigation strategies to various precipitation conditions will be a promising and effective practice for wheat production and water conservation.

Abstract:Winter wheat production in the North China Plain (NCP) relies mainly on irrigation. To assess the effect irrigation management practices on crop production, the HYDRUS-1D model was modified by incorporating the crop growth module adopted from the EPIC model. The modified HYDRUS-1D model was calibrated and validated by using data collected from 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 winter wheat growing seasons in Beijing area. The predicted values for soil water content, soil nitrate concentration, crop growth, yield, and evapotranspiration showed good agreements with the measured values. The calibrated model was then used to evaluate the yield and water use efficiency (WUE) under different hydrologic years. The WUE for different irrigation depth was considered as the criterion for investigating the appropriate irrigation management practices. Results showed that the appropriate irrigation depth per application could be determined as 62.5% of the difference between 20 cmpan evaporation and precipitation for hydrologic years with 75%, 50% and 25% probability of rainfall occurrence, respectively, under the recommended nitrogen application rate in Beijing area. And the corresponding total irrigation amount was 244.7, 213.8 and 192.5 mm. The results of this study provide scientific implications for water management of winter wheat under sprinkler irrigation in the NCP and those areas with similar climatic and cropping practice conditions. Abstract:Efficient allocation of water resources in irrigation districts can alleviate regional water shortages and promote sustainable irrigated agriculture development. However, existing research on water resource allocation in irrigation districts does not address the lack of coordination within the "diversion-delivery-irrigation" chain for multiple water sources and users in a changing environment. Hence, poor water supply and demand matching, low efficiency and poor climate change responses pose challenges for efficient water resource allocation in irrigation districts. Therefore, this study couples the SWAT runoff simulation model with a multiobjective nonlinear programming model and proposes a weather-driven dynamic and optimal allocation model for multiple water sources. This model accounts for fluctuations in water supply and fine-tunes the allocation of water resources to different water sources, different channels and different crop fertility periods in the irrigation area. The model is designed to achieve synergistic improvements in water supply and demand, economic efficiency, equity in water distribution and efficiency in water use. The model was applied to the Qindeli Irrigation District in Heilongjiang Province. The results show that an increase in water supply at the head of the channel promotes a synergistic increase in economic efficiency and water supply and demand matching. This model can improve water use efficiency under water scarcity by reasonably optimizing the water use structure of the irrigation district. Compared with the traditional irrigation method, the optimized model saves 4 % of water and increases yield by 399 kg/ha, economic efficiency by 0.2 yuan per cubic meter of water, water use efficiency by 9 %, and water supply and demand matching by >80 % at all stages of fertility. The model ensures that water resources are allocated in an equitable manner at all levels.

Multi-objective winter wheat irrigation strategies optimization based on coupling AquaCrop-OSPy and NSGA-III: A case study in Yangling, China

Abstract:The contradiction between crop water requirements and water supplies in Guanzhong Plain of Northwest China restricts the production of local winter wheat. The optimization of irrigation strategies considering multiple-objectives is of great significance to alleviate water crisis and sustainability of winter wheat production. This paper considered three typical hydrological years (dry year, normal year, and wet year), and a simulation optimization model coupling AquaCrop and NSGA-III was developed using Python language. The multi-objective optimization problem considered four objectives: (1) maximize crop yield (Y), (2) minimize irrigation water (IW), (3) maximize irrigation water productivity (IWP), and (4) maximize water use efficiency (WUE). The TOPSIS-Entropy method was then adopted for decision-making based on the Pareto fronts which were generated by multi-objective optimization, thus facilitating the optimization of the irrigation strategies. The results show that AquaCrop model could accurately simulate the growth process of winter wheat in the study area, the relative error is acceptable. The R2 of canopy cover (CC) is 0.75 and 0.61, and above ground biomass production (B) is 0.94 and 0.93, respectively. In the Pareto fronts, the difference between the maximum and minimum yield of winter wheat is 9.48 %, reflecting the diversity of multi-objective optimization results. According to the analysis results of this paper, the performance of different irrigation scenarios in each typical year varies greatly. The performance of the optimization in dry years is significantly better than that in normal years and wet years. The optimization of irrigation strategies and comparison of different scenarios play a positive role in improving the local water use efficiency, the winter wheat yield, as well as the sustainable development level of water resources.

Abstract:Since the dynamic adjustment is needed by the water-saving irrigation in arid and semi-arid regions,the ″irrigation-income″ mathematical model established by Jensen multiplication model taking into consideration of the deficit irrigation factor in irrigation decision-making is proposed. The genetic algorithm and fmincon function solving model based on SQP algorithm and active set algorithm are used to verify the accuracy of the established model and the feasibility of the solving method by taking the winter wheat in Baoji gorge irrigation district as the example. The contrast calculation results show that the fmincon function based on SQP algorithm has the optimal operation result,its irrigation income is increased by 3% in comparison with the genetic algorithm,operation time is reduced by 60%,and it has excellent stability. The decision-making system under deficit optimization irrigation was designed with the algorithm.

Abstract:Water scarcity has been a critical constraint to economic development in semi-arid areas of China, so optimizing irrigation scheduling has become essential. This study obtained quantitative relationships between crop yield, crop water consumption, and irrigation quantity based on the Hydrus-2D and Stewart models. Different irrigation scheduling scenarios were evaluated to obtain the best irrigation scheduling based on the principle of simultaneous water conservation and crop productivity improvement with the evaluation indicators of crop yield, water use efficiency (WUE), irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE), and Critic-Topsis method. Taking drip irrigation under mulch as an example, the problem of optimizing the irrigation scheduling for different typical years was calculated. The optimization results showed that in the wet, normal, dry, and very dry years the annual irrigation quantity should be 49.68 mm, 49.68 mm, 85.38 mm, and 123.72 mm, when the WUE as well as IWUE, increases significantly, which had less impact on the crop yield and can save irrigation quantity by 30.00%, 30.00%, 35.00%, 27.00%. This study used Hydrus-2D to make a new attempt in irrigation scheduling optimization, giving full play to the model's high accuracy in soil water transport simulation and flexibility in boundary condition simulation. The optimization results can provide a reference for achieving accurate control of irrigation quantity during the crop growth period and reasonable irrigation scheduling formulation for regional crops.

Abstract:Percolation is one of the important factors in the field water cycle, which affects designing irrigation schedules and increasing water productivity. However, the measurement of percolation is both costly and time‐consuming. This study established a point‐scaled system dynamic model (SDM) for water movement in the root zone of winter wheat in Shijin Irrigation District (SID) and proposed a semi‐distributed method to extend the SDM from the point to regional scales (SM). Observations of soil moisture of the root zone (0–2 m) of winter wheat from 2007 to 2009 were used to evaluate the SDM and SM. Both could accurately simulate soil water movement during the winter wheat growth period (R2 > 0.6, RMSE < 0.032). Meanwhile, three extreme scenarios and sensitivity analysis were also applied to ensure the stability and plausibility of the SDM. The distribution of percolation indicated that irrigation was the main reason for percolation. Furthermore, well irrigation reduced the percolation when compared with canal irrigation. Meanwhile, wells were the main water source (56.3%) for the SID and percolation consumed about 22.1% income water. Future study should focus on improving simulation accuracy for spatial variability and consider the lateral exchange of soil water for regions with hills and mountains.

Optimizing Wheat Planting Pattern to Balance Wheat Production and Its Water Consumption

Abstract:【Objective】 Wheat is the most important crop in North China. However, the scarcity of freshwater resources in this region cannot sustain its production. Optimizing wheat planting area to balance wheat production and its water requirement is hence essential to conserving irrigation water and alleviating water shortage pressure. 【Method】 Evapotranspiration and wheat yield were used as indicators to establish the objective of the wheat planting areas at county scale in the region. Optimization for wheat production was established from the trade-off between wheat production and its water consumption. 【Result】 From 2001 to 2009, evapotranspiration in the wheat season exhibited an increasing trend, followed by a significant decrease from 2010 to 2018 (p<0.05). Moreover, evapotranspiration in the wheat season showed significant variation among different hydrological years, characterized by the highest level in dry years, followed by normal years, and the lowest level was in wet years. Under current irrigation levels, keeping wheat production weight and evapotranspiration weight both at 1 can increase wheat yield by 1.2% to 2.3% and reduce evapotranspiration by 0.4% to 0.8% across the province. Similar results were also obtained at municipal scale, with the yield increasing by 0.7% to 1.6% and evapotranspiration reduced by 0.3% to 0.5%, under the same production and evapotranspiration level. It was found that under the same irrigation levels, reducing production weight combined with an increase in evapotranspiration weight shifts the regions that can maintain high wheat production from the south to the north in Hebei province. This reflects the variations in wheat production and its water consumption between different counties. 【Conclusion】 Under current irrigation level or imposing constraint to irrigation, optimizing wheat planting area at county scale in North China can increase yield and reduce evapotranspiration. Our results provide valuable insights into optimization of wheat planting patterns to balance the trade-off between wheat production and water consumption.
Modeling the Role of Irrigation in Winter Wheat Yield, Crop Water Productivity, and Production in China

Abstract:Irrigation plays an important role in increasing food production in China. The impact of irrigation on crop yield (Y), crop water productivity (CWP), and production has not been quantified systematically across regions covering the whole country. In this study, a GIS-based EPIC model (GEPIC) was applied to simulate Y and CWP for winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in China at a grid resolution of 5 arc-minutes and to analyze the impacts of reducing irrigation water on wheat production. The findings show that irrigation is especially important in improving CWP of winter wheat in the North China Plain (NCP), the "bread basket" of China. On average, the provincial aggregate CWP was 56% higher under the irrigated than that under the rainfed conditions. The intensification of water stress and the associated increase in environmental problems in much of the NCP require critical thoughts about reducing water allocation for irrigated winter wheat. Two scenarios for irrigation reduction in the NCP provinces are presented: reducing irrigation depth (S1), and replacing irrigated winter wheat by rainfed winter wheat (S2). The simulation results show that S1 and S2 have similar effects on wheat production when the reduction in irrigation water supply is below 20% of the current level. Above this percentage, S2 appears to be a better scenario since it leads to less reduction in wheat production with the same amount of water saving.

Abstract:Precise water management is essential for the efficient development of irrigated agricultural crops in the Hetao Irrigation Area of Inner Mongolia. Given the severe water scarcity in the region and the significant use of intercropping as a cropping method, the development of rational irrigation scheduling is crucial. The objective of this work was to combine the ISAREG model with wheat–sunflower intercropping crops in order to enhance the effectiveness of irrigation scheduling in intercropping systems. This was achieved by changing and verifying crucial parameters for simulating irrigation patterns in intercropping. We conducted an assessment of nine irrigation schedules for a wheat–sunflower intercropping system in order to provide a range of irrigation scenarios that effectively fulfill the water requirements of the system. In light of this, we suggested implementing restrictions on the dates and volumes of irrigation based on the demand for agricultural irrigation. This approach aimed to establish irrigation schedules that are highly efficient and tailored to the specific crops in the area. As a result, we achieved a water use efficiency rate of 100%, saved 28.78% of water resources, optimized crop irrigation schedules, and enhanced crop economics by 6.7%. This study presents a novel and efficient method to optimize agricultural irrigation schedules, boost agricultural water use efficiency, and maximize crop yields in order to promote sustainable agricultural development.

Abstract:Unsustainable overexploitation of groundwater for agricultural irrigation has led to rapid groundwater depletion and severe environmental damage in the semi-arid Hebei Plain of China. Field experiments have recommended annual winter fallowing (i.e., forgoing winter wheat production) as the most effective way to replenish groundwater. However, adopting the recommendation across the Hebei Plain would lead to a significant reduction in total wheat production. This research aims to find the most favorable water-sustainable cropping systems for different localities in the Hebei Plain, which at the regional aggregation level maintains the uppermost overall levels of wheat and grain production respectively. Our simulations indicate that in the Hebei Plain, an optimal allocation of a wheat-early maize relay intercropping system and an early maize-winter fallow cropping system across the Hebei Plain could lead to significant water savings while minimizing grain production losses to around 11%. Compared to the prevailing wheat and summer maize cropping system, to prevent a drop in the water table, 39% of the current wheat cropping land would need to be fallowed in winter, reducing irrigation water use by 2639 × 106 m3. Replacing the prevailing wheat and summer maize cropping system with our optimized allocation system could lead to a 36% increase in total maize production and 39% decrease in total wheat production, resulting in total agricultural irrigation water savings of 2322 × 106 m3 and a total grain production reduction by 11%. The findings indicate the potential benefits of our cropping system adaptation method to meet the challenge of recovering local groundwater level with the least possible reduction of wheat and total grain production in the Hebei Plain.

Modeling Water Allocation under Extreme Drought of South-to-North Water Diversion Project in Jiangsu Province, Eastern China

Abstract:Along with China's economic development and social progress, water scarcity has become increasingly challenging. Optimized allocation of water resources, especially through water transfer project, is one of the important approaches to mitigate water shortages. In this study, authors built a model of water resources allocation simulation and the microcosmic configuration based on a complex water network in the east route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project in Jiangsu Province, east China. Selecting data from the typical years with assurance rates of P = 95%, 75%, and 50%, the simulation of supply and demand of water resources under the present situation and the tapping scenario of planning project was carried out. The results showed that water supply capacity increased while water deficits decreased remarkably for the diversion projects. Under the assurance rates of P = 95%, 75%, and 50%, the rate of water shortage decreased by 10.3%, 8.0%, and 5.2%, respectively. Under the planning work situation, the amount of water increased by 2,800 million m(3)even during the period of extreme drought. Based on the results, it also provided an effective plan for the hydraulic engineering to optimize the allocation and management of water resources. It is helpful for policy makers to mitigate water shortage in Jiangsu Province and other areas with water transfer projects in China and other countries.
Exploring the Effects of Irrigation Schedules on Evapotranspiration Partitioning and Crop Water Productivity of Winter Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in North China Plain Using RZWQM2

Abstract:A significant basis for winter wheat production in China is the North China Plain (NCP). However, winter wheat production is severely hampered by water shortages in this area. Transpiration co‐occurs with photosynthesis, affecting crop water productivity (CWP). The purpose of this experiment is to use Root Zone Water Quality Model (RZWQM2) to study actual transpiration (AT) and evaporation (AE) under different irrigation schedules and then determine its impact on grain yield and CWP. In the 2019–2022 winter wheat growing seasons, four experimental treatments were set up: no irrigation during growth period (I0), irrigation at jointing stage (I1), irrigation at jointing and anthesis stage (I2) and irrigation at jointing, anthesis and filling stage (I3), and the RZWQM2 model was calibrated and verified in this experiment. A higher yield (7840.90 kg/ha for an average of 3 years) and the highest CWP can be obtained in I2 treatment (increased by 12.72%, 5.98% and 4.28% for an average of 3 years, respectively, compared to the other three treatments). The model has a good simulation effect on soil water dynamic change and plant physiological performance of the four treatments; the model showed that irrigation increased the simulated AE and AT; however, reduced AE/actual evapotranspiration. For the whole growth period, AT in I3, I2, I1 and I0 was 351.70, 317.30, 271.50 and 223.70 mm, respectively. Especially in the late growth stage of winter wheat, the AT in I3 was 65.20 mm for an average of 3 years, which was significantly higher than I2, I1 and I0 by 31.60, 13.50 and 10.00 mm, respectively. Thus, I3 increased AT at the late growth stage of winter wheat and resulted in an increase in grain yield; however, it did not significantly increase CWP. This study demonstrated that irrigation at winter wheat jointing and anthesis stages can improve the CWP to achieve the goal of stable grain yield and water saving.

Abstract:Improving winter wheat water use efficiency in the North China Plain (NCP), China is essential in light of current irrigation water shortages. In this study, the AquaCrop model was used to calibrate, and validate winter wheat crop performance under various planting dates and irrigation application rates. All experiments were conducted at the Xiaotangshan experimental site in Beijing, China, during seasons of 2008/2009, 2009/2010, 2010/2011 and 2011/2012. This model was first calibrated using data from 2008/2009 and 2009/2010, and subsequently validated using data from 2010/2011 and 2011/2012. The results showed that the simulated canopy cover (CC), biomass yield (BY) and grain yield (GY) were consistent with the measured CC, BY and GY, with corresponding coefficients of determination (R(2)) of 0.93, 0.91 and 0.93, respectively. In addition, relationships between BY, GY and transpiration (T), (R(2) = 0.57 and 0.71, respectively) was observed. These results suggest that frequent irrigation with a small amount of water significantly improved BY and GY. Collectively, these results indicate that the AquaCrop model can be used in the evaluation of various winter wheat irrigation strategies. The AquaCrop model predicted winter wheat CC, BY and GY with acceptable accuracy. Therefore, we concluded that AquaCrop is a useful decision-making tool for use in efforts to optimize wheat winter planting dates, and irrigation strategies.
