Abstract:Rapid urbanization and industrialization made China the world's largest refined copper producer and consumer. Insufficient copper ore reserves necessitated significant imports and scrap copper recycling. Using material flow and scenario analysis, this study examined historical copper supply and assessed future supply-demand balance. The results show that China's refined copper consumption soared from 2.3 Kt in 1949 to 14.43 Mt in 2020, with imports rising from 1.5 Kt to 11.77 Mt, resulting in a 75 % external dependence. In addition, primary copper importers were concentrated in the Americas. In 2020, China accumulated around 120 Mt of in-use stocks, enabling urban mineral resource development. Forecasted results indicate a persistent copper supply deficit. Recycling copper scrap is crucial to bridge the supply-demand gap. This study enhances understanding of copper's historical supply and consumption, providing policymakers with suggestions for sustainable copper resource management.
Examining the Temporal Demand and Sustainability of Copper in China

Abstract:A comprehensive study is carried out to determine (1) the annual historical demand and supply, (2) the annual prospective demand, and (3) the carrying capacity and future sustainability of copper resources in China. The results of the first analysis show that both the demand and the supply have substantially increased since 2000 after remaining relatively minute for the period from 1950 to 2000. By 2015, the per capita total and domestic demands had reached 7.6 and 5.4 kg, respectively. The annual demand prospects suggest that the copper demand will peak in 2030 and either stabilize or marginally drop thereafter. This was found to be the case for all population variants and demand growth rates that were considered herein, with the exception of the "stable scenario". Under the considered scenarios, the domestic demand in the year 2050 is predicted to fall by 6.7-15 million metric tons (Mt), while the total demand will likely fall by 9.4-21.2 Mt. The projected drastic increase in the cumulative primary demand suggests that China should pursue more industrially sustainable options. If the current trends continue, demand will likely surpass even the projected reserve base of 2050 sometime from 2025 to 2035 unless necessary actions to change the course are initiated as soon as possible. Chinese efforts to promote recycling in recent decades have been admirable but are not sufficient to meet the primary demand, thus leaving a large proportion of the demand to be met using imports. Thus, to reduce the primary copper imports, it is desirable to increase recycling rates to 60-70%. The shortcomings of the domestic recycling industry include poor end-of-life collection and an elastic policy framework. These issues merit attention in the short term to increase the long-term sustainability of copper resources in China.
Characterizing Copper Flows in International Trade of China, 1975-2015

Abstract:Since the economic reform, China has actively participated in the global market with rapid industrialization and gradually dominated the utilization and consumption of some critical materials, one of which is copper. China has reigned the global anthropogenic cycle of copper since 2004. We explore copper flows along with the international trade of China during 1975–2015, through life cycle lens, from ore to final products. Our main finding is that China has become more active in the copper-related trade, indicated by its great increase in trade volume and the number of trade partners. The physical volume of copper flows through trade increased over 119 times between 1975 and 2015, mainly because of more imported raw materials of copper and exported copper products. Generally, China is a net importer of copper, with increasing import dependence through the study period, whereas the degree of dependence slightly decreased from 2010 to 2015. The indicator of Export Support Rate took a decreasing percentage, which has fallen about 35% since 2010. It suggests China's changing position in the global resource and manufacturing market. In terms of trade price of different copper products, the price of imported copper concentrate was noticeably higher than that of exported one, revealing the poor copper resource endowment of China; while the different trend of copper semis in recent years signifies that China is in urgent need to improve its capability of producing high value-added semis. From international trade perspective, the copper resource of China presented stable supply as well as demand. The One Belt One Road strategy proposed by the state will further expand both the resource and market of copper.

Abstract:China's high copper demands and poor mineral endowments have led it to rely heavily on the international copper trade. However, the importance of the metal trade has not been adequately appreciated. This study explores the role of metal trade in copper security through a high-resolution material flow analysis of China's copper cycle from 1950 to 2015 that covers over 300 types of copper-containing products. We found that the annual inflow of copper has increased from 4.3 KT/yr to 14 MMT/yr from 1950 to 2015, which drove the increase of copper stocks accumulated in buildings, infrastructures, and products from 7 kg/cap to 56 kg/cap. The total copper in-use stocks in China were approximately 80 MMT in 2015. However, about 70% of all copper used in China in this period was imported from other nations. Thus, this study indicates that more attention should be paid to the importance of the copper waste trade in China.

Abstract:Over the past century of construction and development, China has become the largest copper consumer globally. However, considering the current situation of Chinese copper resources and industrial development patterns, the green development of the copper industry faces numerous challenges. In this study, based on analyses of current and secondary copper resources, the consumption of copper resources, the status of the copper trade, and industrial policy development, major problems have been identified. These include a lack of innovation capacity and advanced copper products, the disordered expansion of copper processing enterprises, conflicts between resources and the environment, and excessive dependence on external. Under the guidance of green development in the 13th Five Year Plan, in order to accelerate green development of the Chinese copper industry, this study has proposed countermeasures and suggestions, such as digging mining resource potential, adjusting industrial structures, promoting technological innovation, and strengthening policy regulation.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for resources, the opening and stability of the key mineral industry chain have become a key area of national security. As an important key mineral, copper is widely used in the national economic construction and defense industry. This leads to fierce competition and a complex flow relationship between copper resource trading countries. Based on the perspective of the industrial chain, this paper constructs a model of the copper resource trade evolution network and trade competition network from 2001 to 2020 and analyzes the temporal, spatial evolution, and competitive characteristics of trade. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) Since 2001, the global trade of copper resources has fluctuated greatly, trade competition is very intense, and the demand for copper has continued to increase. Copper ore is the most important trade, followed by refined copper, copper product, waste copper, and blister copper. (2) Copper resources have different characteristics at different stages of the industrial chain. Refined copper trade relations are the most concentrated. The copper product trade is the most stable. Community division presents different characteristics. (3) Trade relations and trade volume are highly concentrated in a few countries, and competition is unevenly distributed. Competitive relations are mainly concentrated in European and Asian countries, within Asian countries or European countries. (4) The Asia-Pacific region has reached a dominant position in the copper resource competition pattern, especially between China and Japan. Finally, this article provides some suggestions to maintain the stability of the copper resource trade and improve the ability to resist risks for China.

Abstract:Copper is one of China's strategic mineral resources, and its supply security is of great strategic significance to China. In this study, a model of China's copper resource supply system under carbon constraints is constructed using the system dynamics method, and the future supply potential of the system is analyzed and evaluated. Based on the evaluation results, the differential evolution algorithm is used to optimize the supply system to obtain the optimal supply structure that meets the supply-demand balance and carbon emission constraints. Under the carbon constraint scenario, although the carbon emissions of China's copper supply system have declined, a series of problems have also been exposed: such as insufficient primary copper production, excessive dependence on external copper resources, and excessive scrapping of unstable copper-containing products, The supply of secondary copper is affected by the import policy. These factors not only hinder the carbon emission reduction of the copper industry, but also make China's future copper supply full of uncertainty. The optimized supply system significantly reduces carbon emissions (12,664,300 tons per year on average) while meeting the supply-demand balance conditions. The optimal supply structure under the carbon constraint is 26.7 %, 36.3 %, and 37.0 % of the supply shares of the production, recycling, and trading subsystems, respectively. The study results found that improving recycling efficiency can effectively reduce carbon emissions, and when the recycling rate reaches 80 %, China's copper resource supply system will achieve "carbon peak" in 2025, with a peak carbon emission of 41.182 million tons. According to the results, this study suggests that policymakers should strengthen the exploration of primary copper resources, support the development of the secondary recovery industry, and realize diversified import distribution.

Global Copper Cycles in the Anthroposphere Since the 1960S

Abstract:This study characterizes the copper cycle, quantifying flows, stocks, and losses from 1960 to 2020, and explores global copper supply and demand under six scenarios until 2050. Results show substantial growth in copper production, consumption, and trade over six decades, with around 761 Tg of copper extracted, resulting in 483 Tg in-use stocks. Monte Carlo simulations indicate an 11.4 % uncertainty. These stocks, redistributed globally, form independent secondary resources for each country, with Chile, Peru and Australia holding dominant underground reserves, and China and the United States primarily having above-ground stocks. Targeted policies are needed to close the copper cycle due to current loss rates. Copper shortages are anticipated around 2040, further exacerbated by the development of low-carbon technologies and extended copper product lifespans, but mitigated by alternative technologies and increased recycling rates.

Abstract:The rapid pace of Chinas economic and trade development has been considered as a great success since the entry of WTO in 2001. Most recently, China has succeeded in coping with the global financial crisis and achieved a rapid V-shaped recovery which rebounded to two digit growth rate and lead to strengthening its international status. Nevertheless, China has exposed many potential problems in face of the financial crisis which due to international and domestic unbalanced features of Chinas economic operation system. The pattern of China Manufacturing and World Consuming is a game with no winners, while the investment leaded economic development mode achieves high growth rate but without enriches its own residents. The current imbalanced economic development mode cannot be sustained and shall be changed in the future which is not only the consensus of economists at home and abroad, but also a striving goal for the Chinese government for its 12th Five-Year Plan. However, China will face great and formidable challenges by changing the economic development mode to achieve an equilibrium state.
The future of copper in China--A perspective based on analysis of copper flows and stocks

Abstract:This study attempts to speculate on the future of copper metabolism in China based on dynamic substance flow analysis. Based on tremendous growth of copper consumption over the past 63 years, China will depict a substantially increasing trend of copper in-use stocks for the next 30 years. The highest peak will be possibly achieved in 2050, with the maximum ranging between 163 Mt and 171 Mt. After that, total stocks are expected to slowly decline 147-154 Mt by the year 2080. Owing to the increasing demand of in-use stocks, China will continue to have a profound impact on global copper consumption with its high import dependence until around 2020, and the peak demand for imported copper are expected to approach 5.5 Mt/year. Thereafter, old scrap generated by domestic society will occupy an increasingly important role in copper supply. In around 2060, approximately 80% of copper resources could come from domestic recycling of old scrap, implying a major shift from primary production to secondary production. With regard to the effect of lifetime distribution uncertainties in different end-use sectors of copper stocks on the predict results, uncertainty evaluation was performed and found the model was relatively robust to these changes.

Abstract:This paper aims to present a full picture of the current status and future trends of China's iron ore development using system analysis on the iron supply chain. First, we map China's iron flow to present the physical patterns of iron ore supply and demand in China. Next, the historical and future trends of iron ore development in China are discussed from four aspects including demand, resource availability, technology improvement, and strategy and policy. Based on these aspects, we conclude how to sustainably obtain overseas iron ore resources at a reasonable price as the key issue, and this issue is further analyzed from perspectives of market structure, the pricing mechanism, and Chinese steel companies’ behavior. In conclusion, we determined China must enhance cooperation with the main global suppliers, expand overseas investments effectively, and enhance domestic coordination to secure the import of resources and reduce price fluctuations.

Abstract:A secure supply of copper resource is crucial for socio-economic development. To better understand the relationship between urban mining and resource security, it is essential to conduct an integrated analysis of aboveground and underground copper supply, demand, and import/export at the national level. The study quantified the copper resource from multiple sources in the U.S. spanning from 1950 to 2021. Above-ground copper reserves exceed underground reserves by 1.8 times. Net-import dependence of refined copper has risen to 45%. Only 6% of EOL scrap was recycled, and the collection rate declined to 38% by 2021. To prepare for potential bans in China and Malaysia, the U.S. should boost its domestic copper scrap smelting capacity. The current recycling condition poses a challenge for the U.S. to achieve a sustainable supply of copper resource. Future predictions indicate that copper demand would steadily rise to approximately 5 Mt annually by the second half of this century. However, scenario analysis indicates that the total U.S. copper resources can be sustainably supplied by increasing the rate of copper scrap recovery, reducing scrap exports, and exploiting hibernating copper.

Abstract:With the rapid development of China's new energy industry, the consumption demand for copper resources is increasing. As a key raw material, copper resources are becoming increasingly important. Taking the demand for copper commodities in China's new energy development as the research background and the international trade environment and pattern of copper supply as the research perspective, this paper makes an overall assessment of the commodity supply risk of China's copper industrial chain from 2010 to 2021 using the complex network and the newly established three-dimensional risk assessment model and finally reaches the following conclusions. The supply risk of commodities in China's copper industrial chain has been rising continuously since 2019 after experiencing fluctuating development in the early stage and a continuous decline in recent years, and there may be a trend of continuing to rise. The supply risk of China's copper industrial chain was gradually reduced from upstream to midstream and downstream, and the supply risk of copper smelting was more severe. The disruption potential risk of China's copper industrial chain was relatively low, and the international import market structure of copper commodities was relatively reasonable. The supply risk characteristics of each link in China's copper industrial chain were different. Due to the influence of import dependence, the copper mining industry had a high risk of trade exposure. However, the smelting and copper processing industries had certain limitations in production management, operation management and technology research and development, and their ability to withstand risks was weak. In addition, the impact of the domestic COVID-19 epidemic ha caused a high industrial chain vulnerability risk.

Copper Ore Material Footprints and Transfers Embodied in Domestic and International Trade of Provinces in China

Abstract:Copper is a critical material for development and plays a profound role in transitioning to a low‐carbon future. China is the main copper consumer in recent decades that has a fast‐growing domestic market accompanied by active international trade. Given the large regional differences within China, it is relevant to understand the domestic driving forces of copper demands and the cascading effects on international regions. Here we combine the newly developed copper ore extraction datasets and the Chinese interprovincial nested global multi‐regional input–output models to explore the copper ore material footprints (CuMF), the interprovincial CuMF transfers, and the international CuMF transfers of provinces. Results show that at the initial stage of clean energy development (2007–2012), most provinces in China are, to a great degree (∼50%), relatively reliant on international copper inputs. The manufacturing sector is the main driving force of international CuMF transfers while the construction sector drives most interprovincial CuMF transfers, with the total volume of international CuMF transfers recently tripling. The central provinces in the industrial transition period and the northwestern provinces in the initial development stage saw the fastest growth in international and interprovincial CuMF transfers, respectively. The economic growth and low‐carbon transition will further advance copper‐related manufacturing and construction activities while other evidences indicate that the degree of foreign inputs to meet copper demand may peak and the interprovincial supply may rise continuously. Targeted governance of these sectors may effectively reduce high dependence on the international copper supply and ensure an efficient interprovincial CuMF transfer pattern.
Understanding the Spatial and Temporal Patterns of Copper In-Use Stocks in China

Abstract:Two approaches are adopted to characterize the comprehensive pattern of the copper in-use stocks in China. The top-down results indicate that both the total amount and the per capita quantity of the stocks have exhibited a significant and increasing trend for the past 60 years, especially since 2000. The top-down results show that the copper stocks increased from a negligible level of less than 1 kg/capita in 1952 to 44 kg/capita in 2012. The total stocks in 2012 are estimated to be 60 Mt by a top-down approach or 48 Mt by a bottom-up calculation. The bottom-up method determines that the largest reservoir is the infrastructure sector, which accounts for approximately 58% of the total stocks. The spatial pattern indicates that the copper in-use stocks are predominately spatially distributed in the eastern regions of China, a feature that is obviously different from the geographical distribution of the primary resources. Analysis on the prospects of stocks shows both the total magnitude and per capita value will continuously increase in the following decade, and enter a relatively stable stage in around 2030, with a maximum value of 106 kg/capita. The results improve the knowledge about closing copper cycles.

Abstract:International trade forms a crucial component of copper utilization patterns in the anthroposphere and plays a key role in resource reallocation. In response to the gaps in current research, this study details the evolutionary characteristics of copper flows embedded in international trade from 2000 to 2020 at three scales, i.e., global, continental, and national, along the technological life cycle of copper and quantifies the redistribution of copper resource in the anthroposphere through trade. At the global level, the study highlights that copper volume contained in the international trade has risen from 21.9 Mt to 35.8 Mt during 2000–2020, but with a decreasing growth rate against the background of sluggish global economic growth. At the intercontinental level, natural resource endowments and development requirements determine the role in trade played by each region. Accumulatively, Asia imported a total of 134.2 Mt copper resources from other continents while South America met a total of 128.2 Mt copper demand from other continents. North America and Europe played an important role in both import and export of copper resources, but were basically net importers. At the national level, global copper trade was dominated by a few countries including China, the USA, Chile, Peru, etc., and the copper resource endowment of these countries has been greatly changed through international trade. With the possible tightening of global copper resources supply till 2050, resource competition could emerge among the major importing countries.

Abstract:<p>The rise in industrialization and urbanization has elevated consumer lifestyles and has dramatically increased copper consumption in the past three decades. Due to the growing scarcity of copper ore and lower manufacturing costs associated with using recycled copper, copper recycling has gained increasing attention. Because of the uneven geographical distribution of scrap copper, the international scrap copper trade has formed and is experiencing rapid growth. This study applies complex network theory to map the structural evolution of the global scrap copper trade from 1988 to 2017 according to the UN-Comtrade database. The results show that the global scrap copper trade has been reshaped from the pre-existing geopolitical realities through the interaction of geopolitical relations and geo-economics. The America-Asia community is the largest trading community and is driven by the USA and China. China is the largest recipient of scrap copper due to a lack of self-sufficiency with respect to copper and scrap copper resources. India is considered another long-term potential market for exporters, which can result in reducing dependence on a single market such as China. These findings, together with policy-related discussions, help authorities understand the complex international scrap copper trade relationships and propose effective import-export policies to reduce the risk of trade disruption.</p>

Abstract:With modern industry's increasing demand for products from all sectors of the copper industry chain, the trade relationships between countries for copper material are becoming increasingly closer. Additionally, different trade characteristics exist in different sectors of the industrial chain. Based on the data for the global copper trade in 2019and from the perspective of the copper industry chain, this paper analyzes the trade characteristics of the global copper industry chain and of important countries by constructing the trade networks for different links. In addition, we establish a two-dimensional evaluation index system to evaluate the comprehensive trade risks of the major importing countries for each link of the industrial chain, including their supply risks and vulnerability to supply constraints. The following conclusions are drawn. Copper processing is the link with the highest density in the global industrial chain supply chain network and the best connectivity and differentiation among trading countries. In the risk assessment of global copper import trade, Germany is a low risk country in the whole industrial chain. The United States and China are countries with relatively low risks in the whole industrial chain, and the trade risks are relatively high only in the selection link.
