Abstract:As the primary means of transportations in modern society, the automobile is developing toward the trend of intelligence, automation, and comfort. In this paper, we propose a more immersive 3-D surround view covering the automobiles around for advanced driver assistance systems. The 3-D surround view helps drivers to become aware of the driving environment and eliminates visual blind spots. The system first uses four fish-eye lenses mounted around a vehicle to capture images. Then, according to the pattern of image acquisition, camera calibration, image stitching, and scene generation, the 3-D surround driving environment is created. To achieve the real-time and easy-to-handle performance, we only use one image to finish the camera calibration through a special designed checkerboard. Furthermore, in the process of image stitching, a 3-D ship model is built to be the supporter, where texture mapping and image fusion algorithms are utilized to preserve the real texture information. The algorithms used in this system can reduce the computational complexity and improve the stitching efficiency. The fidelity of the surround view is also improved, thereby optimizing the immersion experience of the system under the premise of preserving the information of the surroundings.
Intelligent Driver Assistance System Based on Panoramic Video Technique

Abstract:The intelligent driver assistance systems, which can warn a driver of possible collisions, would give the driver enough time to avoid the impact of collisions. Recently, video technique has obtained more attention in the intelligent driver assistance systems. This paper presents a panoramic video system using a pair of panoramic annular lens (PAL) cameras. PAL can give a panoramic view of the surround of the vehicle. Binocular vision analysis technique is used to detect the objects in front of the vehicle. Area-based correlation is then used to match corresponding features between images from two panoramic cameras. A disparity image obtained can be used to recognize the features and compute the distance from the vehicle. Each view of the vehicle's sides is obtained from only one panoramic camera. In order to detect the objects, the consecutive frames from a panoramic camera are used to create a virtual binocular view. This produces a disparity image which also includes the features of objects and the distance. The result shows the basic feasibility of monitoring the surround of the vehicle based on the panoramic video technique. It is believed that panoramic video technique will play an important role in the future of intelligent driver assistance systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a video analysis system in a vehicle using Panoramic Angular Lens (PAL) camera. The system consists two parts: one is using a PAL camera which is installed on the top of the vehicle to obtain obstacle position and compute the distance from the vehicle; the other is to configure a PAL camera inside the vehicle, which can provide the driver's face pose and eye status information as well as the driver's viewing scene, then several image algorithm are applied to analyze the status of driver and detect the object in front of the vehicle. Our contribution is that the large field view of PAL camera is well used in the application of Intelligent Transportation System, and to research the vehicle and driver information at the same time with a single panoramic camera. Meanwhile the system was very simple.

Abstract:In this paper we propose a new system to detect obstacles round a vehicle for intelligent driver assistance system. The system consists of a pair of panoramic annular lens (PAL) cameras, which are installed on the top of the vehicle. The panoramic annular lens can project the view of the entire 360 degrees around the optical axis onto an annular plane. Two cameras which are fixed properly can capture all view of the surroundings of the vehicle. They are calibrated by using the spherical perspective projection model to unwrapped the conventional perspective image without distortion. A front panoramic image and a back panoramic image of the vehicle form a Vehicle Dynamic Panoramic Map (VDPM). A driver can watch the scene in any direction of the vehicle through the VDPM, which will make the drive safer. Three coordinates systems are established in order to obtain the obstacle position information from the vehicle. We create a virtual binocular vision situation using the video stream from each one panoramic camera. The binocular analysis technique with area-based correlation is used to recognize the obstacle and compute the distance from the vehicle. The experiment result shows the basic feasibility of this system. It is believed that a panoramic annular lens camera will play an important role in the future of intelligent driver assistance systems.

Abstract:Determining the position of the vehicles on road is an important information in the driver assistance system which is used to increase driver's safety. The authors propose a robust real-time vehicle detection and distance estimation method for vision-based driving assistance system. They detect the vehicles in front of their own and estimate their three-dimensional position by using a single monochrome camera. After detecting the preceding vehicles using the common method, they use a new method for distance measurement based on monocular camera to estimate the inter-vehicle distance. The method also provides the longitudinal distance information for the driver alarm system. Finally, they utilise the Kalman framework to update the information of the vehicle which they detected before, the information includes horizontal distance, vertical distance and speed, and use these information to predict risk. Experimental results indicate that the system correctly detects vehicles in real time and effectively estimates the position of preceding vehicles.

Abstract:Assistive technologies aim at enhancing personal mobility of individuals with disabilities to improve their independence and access to social life. For the visually impaired, perception during navigation comprises a major ingredient of independent living. With the development of computer vision, it is possible to meet the richer needs of visually impaired people. However, research on navigation assistance for the visually impaired is still relatively unexplored when compared with the active progress in autonomous driving which is already in full swing. In respond to this issue, we aim to leverage the study of the Stixel-World for automotive systems and transfer it to develop assistive technology for visually impaired people. The impressive research results of deep learning also suppose benefits for vision-based technology. Precisely, semantic segmentation is a task that enables identification of different objects uniformly. Inspired by these observations, we design a set of wearable visual aids, while the core algorithm is based on the stixel representations for three-dimensional world combined with pixel-wise semantic segmentation. Predetermined conditions for stixels in automotive research, such as camera angles, position fixes, and unsuitable assumptions made about the real world are optimized to fit the needs of navigation assistance in our algorithm, along with the incorporation of traversability-related semantic information. We also propose a sound mapping scheme, so that the environmental awareness about geographic and semantic information are conveyed to the visually impaired through acoustic feedback.

Abstract:One major concern in the development of intelligent vehicles is to improve the driving safety. It is also an essential issue for future autonomous driving and intelligent transportation. In this paper, we present a vision-based system for driving assistance. A front and a rear on-board camera are adopted for visual sensing and environment perception. The purpose is to avoid potential traffic accidents due to forward collision and vehicle overtaking, and assist the drivers or self-driving cars to perform safe lane change operations. The proposed techniques consist of lane change detection, forward collision warning, and overtaking vehicle identification. A new cumulative density function (CDF)-based symmetry verification method is proposed for the detection of front vehicles. The motion cue obtained from optical flow is used for overtaking detection. It is further combined with a convolutional neural network to remove repetitive patterns for more accurate overtaking vehicle identification. Our approach is able to adapt to a variety of highway and urban scenarios under different illumination conditions. The experiments and performance evaluation carried out on real scene images have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed techniques.

Abstract:This paper proposes a framework of blind-spot visualization to see through obstacle via augmented reality (AR) glasses for safe driving enabled by millimeter-wave vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications. Cooperative perception is known as promising technology to realize safe (automated-) driving where the driver can make immediate and accurate decisions by widely collecting information on the surrounding traffic environment. It is realized by extended sensors such as high-definition cameras and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) to be installed in road-side units (RSUs) all over the place. Camera and LiDAR sensor data of the blind-spot are transferred from RSU to the vehicle, and these sensor fusion data are created as the colored three-dimensional point cloud. It is then projected on the AR glasses. The key feature of our proposal is to provide blind-spot information as a realistic view so that drivers can recognize it without having to look at other display devices. Our initial implementation presents its feasibility through indoor and outdoor trials.

Abstract:The stereo to multi-view conversion technology plays an important role in the development and promotion of three-dimensional television, which can provide adequate supply of high-quality 3D content for autostereoscopic displays. This paper focuses on a real-time implementation of the stereo to multi-view conversion system, the major parts of which are adaptive meshing, sparse stereo correspondence, energy equation construction and virtual-view rendering. To achieve the real-time performance, we make three main contributions. First, we introduce adaptive meshing to reduce the computational complexity at the expense of slight decrease in quality. Second, we use a simple and effective method based on block matching algorithm to generate the sparse disparity map. Third, for the module of block-saliency calculation, sparse stereo correspondence and view synthesis, novel parallelization strategies and fine-grained optimization techniques based on graphic processing units are used to accelerate the executing speed. Experimental results show that the system can achieve real-time and semi-real-time performance when rendering 8 views with the image resolution of 1280 × 720 and 1920 × 1080 on Tesla K20. The images and videos presented finally are both visually realistic and comfortable.

Abstract:This paper presents a new structure for a driving support designed to compensate for the problems caused by the behaviour of the driver without causing a feeling of unease. This assistance is based on a shared control between the human and an automatic support that computes and applies an assisting torque on the steering wheel. This torque is computed from a representation of the hazards encountered on the road by virtual potentials. However, the equilibrium between the relative influences of the human and the support on the steering wheel are difficult to find and depend upon the situation. This is why this driving support includes a modelization of the driver based on an analysis of several face features using a computer vision algorithm. The goal is to determine whether the driver is drowsy or whether he is paying attention to some specific points in order to adapt the strength of the support. The accuracy of the measurements made on the face features is estimated, and the interest of the proposal as well as the concepts raised by such assistance are studied through simulations.

UniDrive: Towards Universal Driving Perception Across Camera Configurations

Abstract:Vision-centric autonomous driving has demonstrated excellent performance with economical sensors. As the fundamental step, 3D perception aims to infer 3D information from 2D images based on 3D-2D projection. This makes driving perception models susceptible to sensor configuration (e.g., camera intrinsics and extrinsics) variations. However, generalizing across camera configurations is important for deploying autonomous driving models on different car models. In this paper, we present UniDrive, a novel framework for vision-centric autonomous driving to achieve universal perception across camera configurations. We deploy a set of unified virtual cameras and propose a ground-aware projection method to effectively transform the original images into these unified virtual views. We further propose a virtual configuration optimization method by minimizing the expected projection error between original cameras and virtual cameras. The proposed virtual camera projection can be applied to existing 3D perception methods as a plug-and-play module to mitigate the challenges posed by camera parameter variability, resulting in more adaptable and reliable driving perception models. To evaluate the effectiveness of our framework, we collect a dataset on Carla by driving the same routes while only modifying the camera configurations. Experimental results demonstrate that our method trained on one specific camera configuration can generalize to varying configurations with minor performance degradation.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem of blind field of view caused by the change in the vehicle's yaw angle when the self-driving vehicle is turning or changing lanes, this paper proposes a camera rotation strategy based on monocular active environment sensing, which realizes the detection of the blind field of view when the vehicle's yaw angle changes in the self-driving vehicle. Based on the two-degrees-of-freedom dynamic model, the camera rotation angle control is achieved by controlling the front-wheel angle of the vehicle. A camera control module is designed using Simulink to control the camera in real-time, allowing it to rotate based on different driving scenes. The effect of obstacle detection by traditional vision sensors and active vision sensors is tested under different vehicle driving scenes. The results demonstrate that the obstacle detection effect of the camera rotation strategy based on monocular active environment perception, as designed in this paper, is better than the traditional monocular vision.

Enhanced Visual SLAM for Collision-free Driving with Lightweight Autonomous Cars

Abstract:The paper presents a vision-based obstacle avoidance strategy for lightweight self-driving cars that can be run on a CPU-only device using a single RGB-D camera. The method consists of two steps: visual perception and path planning. The visual perception part uses ORBSLAM3 enhanced with optical flow to estimate the car's poses and extract rich texture information from the scene. In the path planning phase, we employ a method combining a control Lyapunov function and control barrier function in the form of quadratic program (CLF-CBF-QP) together with an obstacle shape reconstruction process (SRP) to plan safe and stable trajectories. To validate the performance and robustness of the proposed method, simulation experiments were conducted with a car in various complex indoor environments using the Gazebo simulation environment. Our method can effectively avoid obstacles in the scenes. The proposed algorithm outperforms benchmark algorithms in achieving more stable and shorter trajectories across multiple simulated scenes.

Abstract:We propose a novel method to estimate a driver's points-of-gaze using a pair of ordinary cameras mounted on the windshield and dashboard of a car. This is a challenging problem due to the dynamics of traffic environments with 3D scenes of unknown depths. This problem is further complicated by the volatile distance between the driver and the camera system. To tackle these challenges, we develop a novel convolutional network that simultaneously analyzes the image of the scene and the image of the driver's face. This network has a camera calibration module that can compute an embedding vector that represents the spatial configuration between the driver and the camera system. This calibration module improves the overall network's performance, which can be jointly trained end to end.

Abstract:With the advent of intelligent systems, we are still facing a high number of fatal traffic accidents. Driver assistance systems can significantly reduce this rate. For example, when a driver uses a turn signal, driver assistance systems alert the object's presence in blind spot areas. Camera-based driver assistance systems for blind spots usually alert by detecting objects, including vehicles, in image frames. Based on a more dynamic dangerous situation classification for lane changing and turning to the sides, we propose an efficient blind-spot warning system that works with a single camera sensor for each side. Our contribution consists of two sections. First, we take a deeper look at classifying dangerous and safe situations in a dynamic environment with moving objects. Second, to distinguish dangerous situations from safe conditions, we install a pre-trained SOTA object detector to track vehicles in consecutive frames and then estimate the distances of tracked cars by a 6% mean percentage error rate. In addition, to detect objects in blind spots, the proposed system uses cars' relative velocity to warn dangerous situations. This classification process is not real-time. So, in the second section, we propose a tiny model as a driver assistance system for the blind spot that works in real-time. This tiny model feeds optical flow into CNN layers. This vision-based system uses self-supervised learning without the necessity of the labeled data. It shows 97% accuracy and can detect dangerous situations as a real-time system.

Abstract:Bird's-eye surround view is a new type of Advanced Driv er Assistance System (ADASs) that provides drivers with a real-time <span class="NLM_disp-formula inline-formula"><math>360∘</math></span> top-down view of their vehicle. This paper presents an architecture for a surround view system based on a Tensilica Vision P5 embedded DSP. Fish-eye cameras mounted on each side of a vehicle are employed in the proposed model. The cameras are able to cover the entire view around the vehicle with overlapping areas between neighboring cameras. We use a morphing approach for joint lens and perspective correction of each view. For stitching frames from different cameras, we assume a fixed geometry which permits off-line calculation of frame transformations, thereby reducing the real-time processing load. To further reduce computational complexity, we employ lookup-tables in the view morphing and blending phases. The Vision P5 core combines the four frames with XGA resolution into a single XGA surround view at 30FPS.

Abstract:Driver distraction has become a significant cause of severe traffic accidents over the past decade. Despite the growing development of vision-driven driver monitoring systems, the lack of comprehensive perception datasets restricts road safety and traffic security. In this paper, we present an AssIstive Driving pErception dataset (AIDE) that considers context information both inside and outside the vehicle in naturalistic scenarios. AIDE facilitates holistic driver monitoring through three distinctive characteristics, including multi-view settings of driver and scene, multi-modal annotations of face, body, posture, and gesture, and four pragmatic task designs for driving understanding. To thoroughly explore AIDE, we provide experimental benchmarks on three kinds of baseline frameworks via extensive methods. Moreover, two fusion strategies are introduced to give new insights into learning effective multi-stream/modal representations. We also systematically investigate the importance and rationality of the key components in AIDE and benchmarks. Abstract:Object detection and depth perception are key foundations of object tracking and machine navigation, facilitating a thorough perception and understanding of the surrounding environment. Currently, autonomous vehicles employ complex and bulky systems with high cost and energy consumption to achieve demanding multimodal vision. An imperative exists for the development of compact and reliable technology to enhance the cost-effectiveness and efficiency of autonomous driving systems. Meta-lens, a novel flat optical device, has an artificial nanoantenna array to manipulate the light properties. It is lightweight, ultrathin, and easy to integrate, making it suitable for various applications. We developed a stereo vision meta-lens imaging system for assisted driving vision, a comprehensive perception including imaging, object detection, instance segmentation, and depth information. The compact system comprises a band-pass filter, a stereo vision meta-lens, and a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensor. In comparison to traditional two-camera-based stereo vision systems, the meta-lens stereo vision imaging system eliminates the need for distortion correction or camera calibration. A tailored data processing pipeline is proposed with an intensity and depth gradient cross-validation optimization mechanism and three deep learning modules for object detection, instance segmentation, and stereo matching foundations. Final assisted driving vision provides multimodal perception by integrating the raw image, instance labels, bounding boxes, segmentation masks in depth pseudo color, and depth information for each detected object. Our assisted driving vision based on a stereo meta-lens system offers a comprehensive perception for scene understanding of machines, benefiting the applications of human–computer interaction, machine navigation, autonomous driving, and augmented reality.

Abstract:The task of driving in complex and occluded environments presents significant challenges, as it requires the perception and prediction of one's surrounding environment. This is especially important as blind spots, or areas that are difficult to directly detect due to occlusion by surrounding vehicles or obstacles, which can pose a serious risk of accidents. To address this issue, this study proposes a method called "Uncertainty Shadow Safety", which aims to evaluate the potential risk of invisible areas surrounding the ego vehicle based on the combination of static road information and the presence of traffic participants. The proposed system calculates the "shadow uncertainty" of a non-visible road area based on its physical properties and the probabilities of various traffic participants being present in that area. It then performs a quantitative assessment of the potential risk from various directions, taking into account the surrounding anomalous movement states. Simulation tests were conducted in various scenarios to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the Uncertainty Shadow Safety system. The advanced warning provided by the system to potential risks in invisible areas can help to reduce the likelihood of collisions and improve driving safety for both human drivers and autonomous vehicles.

Abstract:An intelligent driver assistance system is developed in this study, which is able to remind the drivers to turn on the head lights or wipers through situation recognition method when driving at night or on rainy days. Furthermore, the object detection results from multiple perspective views are integrated, and the surrounding object detection results are produced for collision avoidance. The system is able to alarm the drivers based on the lightweight deep learning model and the distance estimation method when surrounding vehicles are too close. Experimental results show that the proposed methods and the chosen lightweight model in our proposed system obtain reliable performance and sufficient computational efficiency under limited computing resource. In conclude, our proposed system obtains high probability to be adopted for the development of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The proposed system can not only assist the driver in determining the vision ahead, but also provide an instant overview of the vehicle's surrounding conditions to enhance driving safety.
