Abstract:This paper proposes an Internal Model Principle (IMP) based Selective Harmonic Controller (SHC) for power converters. The proposed SHC offers an optimal control solution for power converters to mitigate power harmonics. It makes a good trade-off among cost, complexity and performance. It has high accuracy and fast transient response, and it is cost-effective, easy for real-time implementation, and compatible for design rules-of-thumb. An application on a three-phase PWM converter has confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme in terms of harmonic mitigation.

Abstract:Grid-tied inverters which only deliver active power to the mains in the sine wave current way are simple to control. However, they cannot improve and control the power quality of the mains. This paper proposes a new kind of grid-tied inverter based on the instantaneous reactive power theory and harmonic detection algorithm. Besides the transmission of normal active current, the new grid-tied inverter can inject appropriate reactive and harmonic currents into the mains according to the quality of the mains. Consequently, the reactive power and harmonic current in the mains can be compensated. Control strategies and harmonic signal detection methods are derived for different operation modes such as the active power transmission mode, the reactive power compensation mode, and the harmonic current filtering mode. Detailed simulation results have verified the validity of the proposed methodology.

Abstract:This paper investigates power control to regulate both inputs of dual-input DC/AC inverter independently. The dual-input DC/AC inverter topologies can be either neutral point clamp (NPC) or T-type three-level inverter. A mathematical model is established to derive the relationship between the dual-input power and the duty cycle of the DC/AC inverter. Then a control scheme is proposed to decouple the control of the dual inputs of the DC/AC inverter. The design of power control loops further is described. The control scheme is verified on a 125kW three-level DC/AC inverter.
A Novel Topology of Parallel Connection of Voltage-fed Inverters for Induction Heating

Abstract:The induction heating applications like strip steel annealing require electrical power ratings of several megawatts and higher. As the absolute maximum rating of a single-stage inverter is often far below rated power, several inverters have to be connected in parallel. A novel topology, consisting of parallel-connected soft-switching high frequency inverters is presented. The experiment results proved that distinctive features include negligible circulating currents between inverters, flexible configurations of power among inverters.

Abstract:A new hybrid full-bridge inverter which is suitable for ultra-high frequency induction heating power supplies was presented. The proposed topology has characteristics, which act as class-E inverter that the stray inductance of the input bus and the inverter output can be absorbed. Besides, the output capacitance of the switch can be absorbed by the resonance capacitance. This topology also makes it possible that no dead time is reserved for the complementary drives, and, if works properly, it can achieve Zero-Current-Switching (ZCS) and Zero-Voltage Switching (ZVS) turn-on and approximate ZVS turn-off. So it is suitable in the high frequency area. In this paper the characteristics and working principles were explained in detail and their validities was verified through several simulated and experimental results.

Abstract:Multilevel inverters have been paid more and more attentions because of their good characteristics with low output harmonics,high power capacity,good electromagnetic compatibility and so on.With the development of the superconducting magnetic energy storage(SMES)technology,the energy storage efficiency of inductors can be greatly improved,for higher power applications,current source inverters can have particular advantages in some circumstances.Hence it is useful to explore the topology and control strategy of a multilevel current source inverter(CSI)system.A topology of three-phase 5-level CSI is presented in this paper and its operational principle is analyzed.By simplifying the multicarrier PWM technology,two triangular-carriers out of phase are used to generate 3-level signals,after being decoupled,a kind of 5-level PWM control strategy suited for this topology is obtained and is also testified by simulations.Lastly,an experimental system is built to validate the mechanism of this 5-level topology and its PWM control method.

Abstract:Multilevel inverters have been used widely because of their high power capability,lower output harmonics and lower commutation losses and so on.Their main disadvantage is their complexity,requiring a great number of power devices,and complex control method.In this paper,a new topology is proposed based on H-bridge cascaded inverter.The new topology produces a significant reduction in the number of power devices and simply topology structure using a bidirectional auxiliary switch,and has the same output voltage levels.A new step pulse PWM method is proposed for the new topology using selective harmonic elimination pulse-width modulation(SHE-PWM) to eliminate lower order harmonics and it is testified by simulations.Lastly,an experimental 9-level voltage-source inverter system is built to verify the topology and PWM control method.

Abstract:This paper presents the topology structure and control method for input-parallel-output-series (IPOS) inverter system which is suitable for high input current, high output voltage and high power applications. In order to ensure the normal operation of IPOS inverter system, the control method should achieve input current sharing (ICS) and output voltage sharing (OVS) among constituent modules. Through the analysis in this paper, input current sharing is automatically achieved as long as output voltage sharing is controlled. IPOS inverter system is controlled by three-loop control which is composed of outer common output voltage loop, inner current loops and voltage sharing loops. Simulation results show that this control strategy can achieve low total harmonic distortion (THD) in the system output voltage, fast dynamic response and good output voltage sharing performance.

Abstract:Most of research works on multilevel inverters are about voltage source inverters while fewer are about current source inverters. In this paper, a generic single-phase multilevel CSI topology is proposed, the structure is very simple and including fewer switching valves and sharing-inductors.In addition, the topology has the ability of self-equilibrating current. The principles of operation and inductor current equilibrium of the 5-level inverter are presented. Method of multi-carrier phase opposition disposition (POD) PWM technique is given to be applied to the topologies. Lastly, the simulation and experimental results are given to verify the proposition.

Abstract:The topology of multi-functional grid-connected inverter is researched,which connects DG to grid and compensates the harmonic current,reactive power and unbalanced current of grid-connection point as well.Its mathematical model is established,its controller for tracking the output current is designed based on the weighted currents feedback approach and the damping resistance of output filter is designed based on the relationship between its power loss and damping ratio.A simple but effective algorithm is given for calculating the reference currents,which includes two parts:output power tracking and power quality compensation.Simulative results of PSCAD/EMTDC and experimental results of a 15 kV·A prototype show the correctness and validity of the proposed topology and control strategy.

Abstract:This paper proposes an improved power-flow control method for the voltage-source-inverter grid-tied system. Comparing with the traditional grid-tied droop control, it can realize accurate power-flow control and restrain the harmonic current injected to grid. This method is designed based on the classical power-flow phasor model, and consists of an improved droop control in grid-tied mode and a harmonic-compensation control loop. Subsequently, mathematical modeling, analysis and contrast experiment results of the traditional method and the proposed method are presented, which validate the excellent performance of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this paper, the multi-voltage control strategy of single-phase inverters is proposed for lower total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output voltage. 3rd, 5th and 7th harmonics of the output voltage are extracted and controlled in their own synchronous rotating reference frames. Therefore the zero steady-state error can be achieved. It is verified that the pointed out control scheme gives approximately sinusoidal voltage of the 30kVA inverter supplying nonlinear load.

Abstract:The main structure of each phase is composed of cascaded PWM rectifier (CPR) and cascaded inverter (CI) in three-phase high voltage converter (HVC). High voltage grid is the input of HVC. In order to ensure proper operation of HVC, the control method should achieve output voltage sharing (OVS) among rectifiers in CPR, OVS among inverters in CI and high power factor of HVC. Master-slave direct current control (MDCC) is used to control CPR. The anti-interference ability of control system is strong using MDCC without circuit parameters. CI is controlled by three-loop control which is composed of outer common output voltage loop, inner current loops and voltage sharing loops. Simulation results show low total harmonic distortion (THD) in HVC input currents and good OVS in both CPR and CI. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:This paper proposes an internal model principle (IMP)-based optimal selective harmonic controller (SHC) for power converters to mitigate power harmonics. According to the harmonics distribution caused by power converters, a universal recursive SHC module is developed to deal with a featured group of power harmonics. The proposed optimal SHC (OSHC) is of hybrid structure: All recursive SHC modules with weighted gains are connected in parallel. It bridges the real “nk ±m order RC” and the complex “parallel structure RC”. Compared with other IMP-based control solutions, it offers an optimal tradeoff among the cost, complexity, and performance: high accuracy, fast transient response, easy implementation, cost effective, and also easy to design. The analysis and synthesis of the OSHC system are addressed. The proposed SHC offers power converters a tailor-made optimal control solution for compensating selected harmonic frequencies. Application examples of grid-connected inverters confirm the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

Abstract:In high power PWM inverters, the stability of the auxiliary power supplies makes great contribution to the reliability of the inverters. This paper deals with the EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) problem of the auxiliary power supplies which is caused by the high-frequency switching power electronic devices. Firstly the high-frequency models of the three phase inverter and the auxiliary power supplies are given. Meanwhile the common-mode voltage of the inverter is calculated in detail. Based on the models, the conduction routes of the interferences are illustrated. The analysis shows that the common-mode voltage interferes the stability of the auxiliary power supplies through three conduction routes. Finally, methods that can suppress the EMI on power supply voltages are proposed and verified by simulation and experiment.

Abstract:In order to improve the quality and capacity of the voltage waveform exported by inverter,this paper first proposes inverting control system combined with cascading and paralleling.Compare with the cascaded inverter or parallel inverter,this system incorporates the advantages of these two systems.In this paper,the voltage and current double closed-loop control strategy and phase shifted technology are proposed.When the systems is in different modulations,simulation results show that the system can output very low THD(total harmonic distortion),high quality waveforms.Besides,the circulating current can be effectively damped.

Abstract:To satisfy the high voltage direct current (HVDC) grid connection demand for wind power generation system, a novel topology and control strategy of HVDC grid connection for open-winding permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) based wind power generation system is proposed, in which two generator-side converter and two isolated DC/DC converters are used to transmit the wind energy captured by open winding PMSG to HVDC grid. By deducing the mathematic model of open winding PMSG, the vector control technique, position sensorless operation, and space vector modulation strategy is applied to implement the stable generation operation of PMSG. Finally, the simulation model based on MATLAB is built to validate the availability of the proposed control strategy.

Abstract:A novel hybrid-clamped four-level inverter topology and its derived five-level topology are presented in this paper. The proposed topologies can improve the voltage levels, reduce the number of devices in the diode-clamped and flying capacitor multilevel converters, and avoid the series connection of switches in the five-level active-neutral-point-clamped converter. To achieve the voltage balancing of DC-link capacitors and flying capacitors, a modified PWM method is proposed. This PWM method can regulate the central DC-link capacitor and flying capacitor voltages by adjusting the duty cycles of PWM signals slightly. The upper and lower DC-link capacitor voltages are balanced by zero-sequence voltage injection. An experimental prototype is built up, and the experimental results verify this topology.
