Abstract:Catchments in the Loess Plateau have been under the influence of human activities for centuries,in which the main influence came from accelerated and intensified soil conservation measures in the last four decades. It is important to evaluate the effects of these measures on the runoff and sediment in order to develop sustainable catchment management plans in the region. This study evaluated changes of the data of precipitation, runoff and sediment from 16 precipitation gauging stations and 2 hydrologic stations under large soil conservation measures. The non-parametric Mann-Kendall test was used to identify trends of annual precipitation, runoff and sediment transportation. The results showed significant downward trends for the runoff and sediment whereas no significant trend for the precipitation during the period of record. The Pettitt's test indicated that a change point occurred in 1971 for runoff and 1979 for sediment transportation.Comparison of monthly flow duration curves for 19 years(1952-1970) and 30 years(1971-2000) showed significant changes in stream-flow regime.Reduction in most percentile flows varied from 20 to 30%.Whereas in sediment transportation, for 27 years(1952-1978) and 22 years (1979-2000),reduction in low flows reached to 40%,and in high flows even higher. The relations among precipitation, runoff, and sediment transportation were established in the study area. The results showed that due to the direct impacts of human activities, the runoff in the study area decreased annually by 18.8×10~8m~3,the sediment transportation decreased by 3.7×10~8t.Compared to former periods, establishment of soil conservation measures in the study area was expected to be the driven factor to the decrease of runoff and sediment transportation.
