Abstract:We have used a variety of different applied fields to control the density, growth, and structure of colloidal crystals. Gravity exerts a body force proportional to the buoyant mass and in equilibrium produces a height-dependent con centration profile. A similar body force can be obtained with electric fields on charged particles (electrophoresis), a temperature gradient on all particles, or an electric field gradient on uncharged particles (dielectrophoresis). The last is particularly interesting since its magnitude and sign can be changed by tuning the applied frequency. We study these effects in bulk (making 'dielectrophoretic bottles' or traps), to control concentration profiles during nucleation and growth and near surfaces. We also study control of non-spherical and optically anisotropic particles with the light field from laser tweezers.
Rainbows in a Vial: Controlled Assembly of 2D Colloids in Two Perpendicular External Fields

Abstract:The ability to control the dynamics of self-assembly of an isotropic nanoparticles over multiple length scales by application of external fields is an important technological and fundamental challenge in colloidal science and soft condensed matter physics. Here we demonstrate the controlled assembly of two-dimensional (2D) colloidal liquid crystals under the influence of gravity and an external magnetic field. Due to the positive anisotropy of diamagnetic susceptibility (Delta chi > 0), the colloidal nanoplates of monolayer zirconium phosphate could exhibit intriguing alignment with their normals parallel to the magnetic field, thus transforming the multi-domain nematic phase into a mono-domain superstructure. Interestingly, the quasi-equilibrium states of such 2D soft materials under the prolonged gravity-induced sedimentation were found to generate a rich pattern of interference color bands (referred to as rainbows in a vial) upon under the effect of an aligning magnetic field. The birefringence measurement of the resulting color bands suggested quadratically decreasing volume fraction with sample height. The osmotic pressure (Pi) as a function of nanoplate volume fraction (phi) is found to agree with the theoretical prediction of the equation of state of the nematic phase of hard nanoplates, with a positive deviation at higher volume fractions. To the best of our knowledge, such field-driven dynamic formation of rich interference color bands, imitating almost the full spectrum of Michel-Levy interference bands, which was a pure mathematical representation, is experimentally achieved for the first time in a single sample.
Gradation-Controlled Electric Field Distribution in Multilayered Colloidal Crystals

Abstract:We exploit theoretically nonlinear optical materials by graded multilayered colloidal crystals, whose basic layer is made of metallodielectric nanoparticles immersed periodically in a host fluid. In the crystals, either the volume fraction of nanoparticles or the dielectric constant of host fluid can vary gradually within layers. The electric field distribution can be shown to exhibit a peak in a certain layer, and that the position of the peak can change by tuning the incident angular frequency. Such a gradation-controlled electric field distribution serves as a physical mechanism for understanding the enhanced nonlinear optical responses with a broad plasmon band.

Abstract:Three-dimensional ordered colloidal systems with lattice constants comparable to the wavelength of visible light might find important application as photonic crystals 1 , optic filters and switches 2 , and chemical sensors 3 . Colloidal crystallization has been actively studied 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , leading to the development of several methods to control the self-assembly of the colloidal particles; examples include colloidal epitaxy 9 and space-based reduced-gravity techniques 10 , 11 . Here we report a method to control the nucleation and growth of hard-sphere colloidal crystals that relies on the use of temperature gradients to define a density gradient. This is somewhat counterintuitive as temperature does not play a role in determining the hard-sphere phase diagram. We obtain hard-sphere single crystals (size ∼3 mm) from a sample in a concentration regime that would remain in the liquid state in the absence of a temperature gradient. We expect the method to have applications in controlling the ordering and growth of various ‘soft’ systems including colloids, copolymers, emulsions and proteins.

Abstract:By utilizing the electrorheological effect, three-dimensional colloidal crystals can be produced, whose lattice structure can be changed from the body-centered-tetragonal lattice to other lattices under the application of electric fields. This paper calculates photonic band structures of such crystals with lattice structure transformation, and demonstrates the existence of complete band gaps for some intermediate lattices. Thus, it becomes possible to use the electrorheological effect to achieve photonic crystals with desired photonic gap properties resulting from tunable structures.

Abstract:Field-induced assembly of colloidal particles into structures of desired configurations is extremely relevant from the viewpoint of producing field-assembled micro-swimmers and reconfigurable smart materials. However, the behaviour of colloidal particles under the influence of alternating current (AC) electric fields remains a topic of ongoing investigation due to the complex effects of various control parameters. Here we examine the role of several factors including particle size, zeta potential, voltage and frequency of the applied field in the formation of different structural configurations ranging from crystals to glasses, and observe interesting and unexpected behaviours in the structure formation. Additionally, we investigate the dynamics of structure formation; the nature of diffusion and active motion in these out-of-equilibrium systems, and show how that leads to the formation of close-packed or open structures. Lastly, we investigate the frequency-driven disorder-order-disorder phase transition in colloidal crystals, which is a starting point for building reconfigurable systems. Our findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the significant roles of various factors in electric field-induced assembly of colloidal particles, as well as pave the way for potential applications in micro-robotics and next-generation materials.

Abstract:Spherical colloids arranged in a crystalline order are known to produce structural colors. The intensity and brilliance of such photonic crystals require high size-monodispersity of the colloids, a low number of lattice defects and disorder, as well as a relatively large refractive index contrast between the scattering colloids and the continuous background. Here we present the unexpected photonic properties of aqueous suspensions of charge-stabilized, 186 nm large, fluorinated colloids with a refractive index of 1.37. Employing reflectivity, optical observation, small angle x-ray scattering measurements and reflectivity modeling, we demonstrate that these suspensions become partially transparent while showing strong, almost angle-independent color in reflection despite the very small refractive index difference. Under certain conditions, additional sharp Bragg reflections are observed. We were able to tune the observed structural colors continuously across the entire visible range by simply changing the volume fraction of these colloidal suspensions, which show a white appearance when dilute, structural color and Bragg peaks when concentrated enough to form Wiegner crystal, and angle-independent color when very concentrated and in a glassy phase.

Abstract:We report an experimental study of the elastic properties of a two-dimensional (2D) colloidal crystal subjected to light-induced substrate potentials. In agreement with recent theoretical predictions [H.H. von Gruenberg and J. Baumgartl, Phys. Rev. E 75, 051406 (2007)] the phonon band structure of such systems can be tuned depending on the symmetry and depth of the substrate potential. Calculations with binary crystals suggest that phononic band engineering can be also performed by variations of the pair potential and thus opens novel perspectives for the fabrication of phononic crystals with band gaps tunable by external fields.

Abstract:Liquid crystal colloids manifest complex motion caused by external stimuli, but tunable and addressable control of microsized objects remains a challenge. This study aims to demonstrate light-driven trapping, transport, and sustained periodic motions of microparticles by employing liquid crystal films as a light-controllable colloidal platform. The diverse motions of microscopic particles result from Marangoni convection coupled with elastic deformations in free-surface liquid crystal films subjected to light beam heating. The specific mode of particle motion, including damped and sustained oscillations, also combined with sustained rotation, is defined by the liquid crystal chirality, particle surface treatment, film thickness, and the power of the tightly focused light beam. The results reveal that free-surface liquid crystals provide a unique platform for the indirect optical manipulation of microscopic objects, paving the way for novel applications in microfluidic tools, particle sorting and transport, micropatterning, and various micromachines.

Abstract:Rational control over the periodic arrangement of particles by means of external stimuli is a technologically important aspect of colloidal science with important physical underpinnings. Here, a robust structural control of particle assemblies in a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) is demonstrated by dissolving trace amounts of light-responsive azo-dendrimer molecules which spontaneously get adsorbed on the particle surface. The azo-dendrimer molecules in the presence of external UV irradiation undergo conformational change (trans-cis); as a result, they transmit the mechanical torque to surrounding LC molecules and alter the near-field director orientation. The director re-orientation at the surface of the particles causes topological defect transformation which involves elastic dipoles, quadrupoles and hexadecapoles. The defect transformation can be emulated in colloidal assemblies towards different purposes such as rotation of chains and restructuring of 2D colloidal crystals. In this study, various topological aspects of light-activated defect transformation and its application in the collective manipulation of colloidal assemblies are presented.

Abstract:When subjected to an AC electric field perpendicular to its layers, the cholesteric planar state may undergo a periodic layer undulation, known as the Helfrich deformation, which generates a color change of the reflected light. The Helfrich deformation of regular cholesteric liquid crystals is, however, unstable and easily taken over by the focal conic state, and thus the color tuning range is narrow. We demonstrated that the Helfrich deformation can be stabilized in a large electric field region by doping a bent dimer with an anomalously small bend elastic constant and dispersing a small amount of polymer network. By varying the dimer concentration, we were able to systematically change the bend elastic constant and thus verify the theoretical prediction of the undulation threshold electric field and periodicity. We also achieved reflectance tuning with electric field less than 2 V mu m(-1) and color tuning covering the entire visible light region with electric field as low as 4 V mu m(-1).

Abstract:Abstract One of the long-sought-after goals in light manipulation is tuning of transmitted interference colours. Previous approaches toward this goal include material chirality, strain and electric-field controls. Alternatively, colour control by magnetic field offers contactless, non-invasive and energy-free advantages but has remained elusive due to feeble magneto-birefringence in conventional transparent media. Here we demonstrate an anomalously large magneto-birefringence effect in transparent suspensions of magnetic two-dimensional crystals, which arises from a combination of a large Cotton-Mouton coefficient and relatively high magnetic saturation birefringence. The effect is orders of magnitude stronger than those previously demonstrated for transparent materials. The transmitted colours of the suspension can be continuously tuned over two-wavelength cycles by moderate magnetic fields below 0.8 T. The work opens a new avenue to tune transmitted colours, and can be further extended to other systems with artificially engineered magnetic birefringence.

Abstract:Electrically responsive photonic crystals, capable of transforming crystal structures and changing intrinsic structural colors in response to external electrical energies, can serve as optically active components for promising technological applications. Unfortunately, the deformation of inverse opal photonic crystals generally weakens the structural stability and leads to poor color tuning repeatability, while most color-tunable colloidal photonic crystals suffer from low color saturation as a result of small refractive index difference between the colloids and matrices. Inspired by cephalopod skins, nanometer-sized hollow silica sphere/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)–polystyrene sulfonate photonic crystals are self-assembled using a scalable coating technique. The as-engineered photonic crystals exhibit a conspicuous structural color that is tunable on demand by applying varied voltages. Importantly, their appearance and expanded crystalline lattice can be maintained without any electric field under ambient conditions and simultaneously recovered by applying an oxidation potential. The reversibility and the dependence of hollow sphere size and thickness on electrochromic behaviors are also investigated in this study.

Abstract:Tuning the lattice spacing or stop bands holds great significance in the design and application of materials with colloidal crystals. Typically, particle surface modifications or the application of external physical fields are needed. In this study, we demonstrated the ability to expand or compress the lattice of colloidal crystals simply by utilizing a salt solution, without the need for any special treatments to the colloidal particles. We found that by only considering the diffusiophoresis effect we cannot explain the reversion of lattice expansion to lattice compression with the increase in the salt concentration and that the diffusioosmotic flow originating from the container wall must be taken into account. Further analysis revealed that variations in the salt concentration altered the relative amplitudes between diffusiophoresis and diffusioosmosis through changing the zeta potentials of the particles and the wall, and the competition between the particle diffusiophoresis and wall diffusioosmosis lay at the center of the underlying mechanism.

Multiferroic Property of Colloidal Crystals with Three-Dimensional Solid-Solid Phase Transitions

Abstract:It is a challenge to understand the dynamics of ubiquitous solid-solid phase transitions in three dimensions. In this direction, colloidal crystals are often adopted as a model system for investigation, because they contain highly ordered arrays of colloidal microparticles, analogous to atomic or molecular counterparts with appropriate scaling. Here, by resorting to the Ewald-Kornfeld formulation, we describe a type of solid-solid phase transitions from the body-centered tetragonal lattice, to the face-centered cubic lattice, and then to subsequent lattices, which have been experimentally demonstrated in electro-magnetorheological fluids (which contain suspended microparticles enabling the formation of crystalline structures) subjected to crossed electric and magnetic fields. As a result, we find that each lattice exhibits specific multiferroic properties at room temperature. The findings are further confirmed by independent finite-element simulations. Despite some limitations (e.g., the specific value of change in magnetization is small during phase transitions), this work suggests a way to real-time measure the microscopic dynamics of three-dimensional solid-solid phase transitions in colloidal crystals by detecting their multiferroic properties. Abstract:We have computed the internal electric field distribution in monolayer, bilayer, and trilayer colloidal photonic crystal thin films on a glass substrate. The field distributions are evaluated on the top photonic crystal layer under the effects of additional layers along the direction of light propagation We have also investigated the field distributions in photonic crystal thin films at on-resonance and off-resonance incident wavelengths. The calculated reflection and transmission spectra of photonic crystal thin films help us choose the right wavelengths for determining the on-resonance and off-resonance conditions. The electric fields across different regions in the crystal plane are evaluated for a quantitative understanding of the field distribution. We have observed that the internal electric field gets redistributed in the plane of a close-packed periodic array of colloids. Our results reveal that the internal electric field is localized and enhanced in the air void region between the dielectric spheres with nearly the same maximum field values for the on-resonance wavelength. We have observed that at off-resonance wavelength, the field gets localized within the dielectric sphere region for the monolayer and bilayer cases. Contrastingly, the field distribution in the trilayer case forms a connecting network within the photonic crystal plane. Under off-resonance wavelength, the trilayer shows a huge enhancement in maximum field values compared to the monolayer and bilayer thin films. These results promise to employ photonic crystal thin films of colloidal dielectric spheres as templates for sensing applications using the surfaced enhanced Raman scattering technique.

Abstract:Colloidal photonic crystals (CPhCs) consisting of iron oxide magnetic spheres possess high lattice tunability but are generally unstable and difficult to manage in liquid form. We solve the problem by introducing the colloidal spheres into a resin system, which can "freeze" three-dimensional (3D) patterns by photopolymerization. Robust solid-form CPhCs with various structural colors were, therefore, achieved. The "frozen" 3D patterns would,permit not only a systematic exploration on self-assembling dynamics, colloidal crystallography, and PhC physics but also may pave a new application avenue if a solid, but still soft, PhC is shaped or sliced.
