Abstract:Conventional wisdom holds that the high competitiveness of the newspapers in Beijing and Shanghai is due to fast economic development in these cities. This research, however, finds that the degrees of newspaper competitiveness in Beijing and Shanghai do not relate positively to their GDP growth rates. While Shanghai's GDP outranks Beijing, the newspaper business in Beijing outgrows Shanghai. This paper argues that under the current Chinese management system, economic impact upon newspapers' development is limited. Only after the government management over media is reformed, can economic factors become a decisive force behind newspapers' innovation and advertising competitiveness.

Abstract:Chinese newspapers are beginning to feel the effects of digital media both on their circulations and advertising revenues. In contrast to the west, where newspaper circulation has been problematic for some years, this represents a new situation since they have enjoyed 25 years during which both circulation and advertising grew very rapidly. The response of Chinese newspapers has some similarities with that experienced in the West, and notably the United States, but it also has major differences. Newspapers elsewhere have responded to the situation primarily as economic units, but in China, the political dimension has had a central role. The article reviews the comparative impact of the crisis and gives an overview of the Chinese response in terms of cost cutting, raising new revenues and changing journalistic practices. Alongside the technological and economic factors, it notes that the Xi leadership has taken a much more interventionist stance on editorial content and that this has further constrained newspapers’ possible responses. It concludes by considering some of the implications of the changed situation and the ways in which newspapers have responded to it.

Abstract:The paper uses a simple bargaining model of bilateral trade to analyze the acute conflict between newspapers and commercial portals arising from the latter's free or low-priced copying of the huge amounts of content resources produced by the former with high fixed and sunk cost.We show that the special characteristics of content cause the unfavorable position of newspapers in the content trade with the commercial portals and the newspapers' bargaining alliance has no stability.Finally,the paper discusses some possible ways for newspapers to change their unfavorable position.

The paper also regards that the Chinese sports industry is of high risk, high return, and high barriers to entry. Abstract:The paper investigates the development of Chinese Journalism in Post-WTO time and discusses its ongoing transformation.First,the scope of media's core business has been narrowed due to the infiltration of foreign capital.Second,many new media business institutions have sprung up,as a result of foreign and private capital investment in the sector.Third,China's WTO promise has generated an impact on the journalism.China's domestic media now have to face a large number of opponents.On one hand,they must play an irreplaceable traditional role in leading public opinion and political publicity as before.On the other hand,they need to occupy favorable position by making full use of resources.At the same time,there is also a big gap between information in and out in Post-WTO time.How can our media go global? Abstract:The severe outflow of China’s excellent academic papers is comprehensively and concretely presented on the basis of the statistics of SCI and SSCI in 2014. On the one hand,the paper shows the four reasons of severe outflow of China’s excellent academic papers: lacking national-level macro guidance,lacking scientific evaluation mechanism,lacking internationally influential journals and having a large gap between domestic journals operation mechanism and overseas operation mechanism. On the other hand,it puts forward four specific and practical countermeasures:strengthening macro-level national guidance,supporting top international journals with superior resources, adjusting scientific evaluation policy and deepening the reform of journal system.

Abstract:The development of the market has produced a differentiation inside the Chinese press between an ‘official’ press with traditional propaganda functions on behalf of the Communist Party and a ‘commercial’ press whose objective is to maximise revenue. Scholarly opinion has differed over whether marketization undermines Party control and whether new forms of journalism have arisen that lead to conflicts. These discussions have rested on little evidence as to the practises of Chinese journalism. This article presents empirical data on the extent of the differentiation, reporting on a content analysis of the national news in People’s Daily and Southern Metropolitan Daily. These titles are popularly believed to represent the polar opposites of official, orthodox journalism and commercial, liberal journalism. The evidence presented here demonstrates that while there are indeed significant differences in the journalism of the two titles, there remains a substantial overlap in their choice of subjects, their use of sources and the degree to which news is presented ‘objectively’. Southern Metropolitan Daily does display some ‘popular’ features and does contain more ‘watchdog’ journalism, but it shares with its official cousin an emphasis upon the party as the source for news.
