Abstract:Image fusion has been developing into an important area of research. In remote sensing, the use of the same image sensor in different working modes, or different image sensors, can provide reinforcing or complementary information. Therefore, it is highly valuable to fuse outputs from multiple sensors (or the same sensor in different working modes) to improve the overall performance of the remote images, which are very useful for human visual perception and image processing task. Accordingly, in this paper, we first provide a comprehensive survey of the state of the art of multi-sensor image fusion methods in terms of three aspects: pixel-level fusion, feature-level fusion and decision-level fusion. An overview of existing fusion strategies is then introduced, after which the existing fusion quality measures are summarized. Finally, this review analyzes the development trends in fusion algorithms that may attract researchers to further explore the research in this field.

Abstract:Given the advancements of remote sensing technology, large volumes of remotely sensed images with different spatial, temporal, and spectral resolutions are available. To better monitor and understand the changing Earth's environment, fusion of remotely sensed images with different spatial, temporal, and spectral resolutions is critical for distinctive feature retrieval, interpretation, mapping, and decision analysis. A suite of methods have been developed to fuse multisensor satellite images for different purposes in the past few decades. This paper provides a thorough review of contemporary and classic image fusion methods and presents a summary of their phenomenological applications, with challenges and perspectives, for environmental systems analysis. Cross-mission satellite image fusion, networking, and missing value pixel reconstruction for environmental monitoring are described, and their complex integration is illustrated with a case study of Lake Nicaragua that elucidates the state-of-the-art remote sensing technologies for advancing water quality management.

Abstract:With the principles of image fusion methods,this paper focused on finding a proper method for fusing the panchromatic and multi-spectral images of QuickBird,SPOT5 and Landsat ETM+.Brovey,SVR,PCA,Pansharp and Gram-schmidt were used in this paper.The results showed that within these methods,①the optimum method for QuickBird image was Gram-schmidt transform.②Pansharp transform was the optimum for SPOT5 image.③For ETM+ image,the Gram-schmidt transform was the best method from the view of preserving spectral information of multi-spectral image;Brovey transform presented the best spatial information for band 2 and band 3,SVR transform obtained the better spatial effects than other transforms for band 1,5,7,and Pansharp transform was the best method for band 2.

Abstract:In China,accelerating industrialization and urbanization following high-speed economic development and population increases have greatly impacted land use/cover changes,making it imperative to obtain accurate and up to date information on changes so as to evaluate their environmental effects. The major purpose of this study was to develop a new method to fuse lower spatial resolution multispectral satellite images with higher spatial resolution panchromatic ones to assist in land use/cover mapping. An algorithm of a new fusion method known as edge enhancement intensity modulation (EEIM) was proposed to merge two optical image data sets of different spectral ranges. The results showed that the EEIM image was quite similar in color to lower resolution multispectral images,and the fused product was better able to preserve spectral information. Thus,compared to conventional approaches,the spectral distortion of the fused images was markedly reduced. Therefore,the EEIM fusion method could be utilized to fuse remote sensing data from the same or different sensors,including TM images and SPOT5 panchromatic images,providing high quality land use/cover images.

Abstract:As the development of satellite remote sensing technology, it is possible to obtain various remotely sensed images from sensors with different spatial and spectral characters. Data fusion is a widely used technique to make full use of the different kinds of information so as to reach a more accurate and stable result. This paper investigates the extraction of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), an important parameter indicating the growth of crops in agriculture, from a SPOT panchromatic image and a TM multispectral image using 5 classical data fusion methods, they are Principal Component Spectral Sharpening (PCSS), Brovey Fusion, Gram-Schmidt Spectral Sharpening (GS), CN Spectral Sharping (CN) and wavelet fusion. Results show that the fused image by any of the methods contains more information content for NDVI extraction than before. Comparatively, GS has better effects in remaining both spectral information and brightness than other four methods.

Abstract:With the availability of multisensor,multitemporal,multiresolution and multifrequency image data from operational Earth observation satellites,the fusion of digital image data has become a valuable tool in remote sensing image processing.For the full exploitation of increasingly sophisticated multisource data,a lot of image fusion algorithms have been developed.In order to comprehensively understand the development of image fusion technologies in China,this paper reviews the traditional fusion algorithms and some improved fusion algorithms based on traditional HIS,Brovey,PCA and Wavelet fusion in detail.In addition,some new fusion algorithms are also introduced.Problems and prospects of image fusion are addressed simply for the attention of future researches in related fields.As multisource image fusion is a widely applied technique for various research fields,a comprehensive understanding of the image fusion algorithms would be beneficial for the choice of data and image quality control for different purposes of researches.

Abstract:Remote sensing image fusion is an effective way to use a large volume of data from multisensor images. Most earth satellites such as SPOT, Landsat 7, IKONOS and QuickBird provide both panchromatic (Pan) images at a higher spatial resolution and multispectral (MS) images at a lower spatial resolution and many remote sensing applications require both high spatial and high spectral resolutions, especially for GIS based applications. An effective image fusion technique can produce such remotely sensed images. Image fusion is the combination of two or more different images to form a new image by using a certain algorithm to obtain more and better information about an object or a study area than. The image fusion is performed at three different processing levels which are pixel level, feature level and decision level according to the stage at which the fusion takes place. There are many image fusion methods that can be used to produce high resolution multispectral images from a high resolution pan image and low resolution multispectral images. This paper explores the major remote sensing data fusion techniques at pixel level and reviews the concept, principals, limitations and advantages for each technique. This paper focused on traditional techniques like intensity hue-saturation- (HIS), Brovey, principal component analysis (PCA) and Wavelet.

Abstract:Satellite remote sensing of inland water body requires a high spatial resolution and a multiband narrow spectral resolution, which makes the fusion between panchromatic（PAN） and multi-spectral（MS） images particularly important. Taking the Daquekou section of the Qiantang River as an observation target, four conventional fusion methods widely accepted in satellite image processing, including pan sharpening（PS）, principal component analysis（PCA）, Gram-Schmidt（GS）, and wavelet fusion（WF）, are utilized to fuse MS and PAN images of GF-1.The results of subjective and objective evaluation methods application indicate that GS performs the best,followed by the PCA, the WF and the PS in the order of descending. The existence of a large area of the water body is a dominant factor impacting the fusion performance. Meanwhile, the ability of retaining spatial and spectral informations is an important factor affecting the fusion performance of different fusion methods. The fundamental difference of reflectivity information acquisition between water and land is the reason for the failure of conventional fusion methods for land observation such as the PS to be used in the presence of the large water body. It is suggested that the adoption of the conventional fusion methods in the observing water body as the main target should be taken with caution. The performances of the fusion methods need re-assessment when the large-scale water body is present in the remote sensing image or when the research aims for the water body observation.

Abstract:As remote sensing image resolution improves continuously, the acquisition and up-date of GIS spacial data with the auxiliary of remote sensing image is becoming hot topics in the area of RS mixed with GIS. This paper discusses a method of GIS database up-date based on the fusion of spot and TM image features. We can overlay the image fusion outcome with the registrated GIS vector map to update GIS vector data, thus it can be realized that the quick up-date of GIS data by the use of high-resolution remote sensing image information.

Abstract:A remote sensing interpretation technique combined texture and spectral information, for land/water classification, is given in this paper,in order to get better results taking advantage of both analyses.By using texture based on grey level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and red/infrared spectral information, a refined boundary of land/water was obtained, which improved the accuracy of the land type labeling. On this basis, a gray level difference associated possibility matrix (GLDAP), in view of the characteristics of multi-spectral data, is presented and applied regression analysis to the elevation data of multi-spectral image with the extracted features from GLDAP.

Abstract:This paper introduces an application of land-cover changes detection based on remote sensing image analysis. The main purpose of this study is to monitor urban expansions and the changes from cultivate land to construction land with multitemporal TM image and SPOT image. Data fusion, image enhancement and texture analysis techniques are used in this case study. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is confirmed by experimental results carried out on remote sensing data of Jinzhou area in Dalian, China.

Abstract:Image fusion has been increasingly important in environmental surveillance. It is well-known that multi-scale decomposition methods lack of spatial-temporal adaptability. To tackle this problem, based on Kalman filtered compressed sensing, a dynamic image estimation fusion framework is provided. A parametric spatial-temporal fusion method is proposed for modelling fusion pattern. This method is capable of learning model parameters adaptively in state space. Furthermore, an optimal fusion method for remote sensing images is presented, which exploits statistical property of the decomposition coefficients and utilizes the fuzzy integral. The numerical experiments on the ground-truth datasets indicate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Abstract:The remote sensing image fusion method based on multi-band wavelet combining with multiple dimension texture features was discussed.In the fusion process,the high resolution panchromatic image and multi-spectral image were decomposed with multi-ary wavelet first and then local variance,local average grads,local energy and local information entropy texture features were extracted.After that the high frequency ingredients of high resolution image and R,G,B bands image by multi-band wavelet transform were fused based on combing multiple criteria of multiple dimension texture features and the high frequency ingredients of high resolution image was formed.The inverse multi-band wavelet transform was done based on low frequency ingredients of R,G,B bands image and new high frequency ingredients separately.Using 3-band wavelet transform,the fusion of 10 m resolution SPOT panchromatic and 30 m resolution TM image in Huainan mine was experimented.Visual interpretation(qualitative evaluation),spectral curve analysis and quantitative evaluation were applied to assess the method.The results show that this method can not only improve the definition and resolution of the multi-spectral image,but also retain the color feature.

Abstract:The SAR image and the multispectral image are both used for dynamic monitoring, mineral resources investigation, urban and rural monitoring and evaluation, traffic network exploration, forest resources investigation, desertification monitoring, and so on. The multi-spectral and SAR image fusion to improve the classify quality is discussed in this paper, compared the common fusion algorithms of the SAR image and multi spectral images, that is standard color transform (Brovey) method, phase recovery (Gram-Schmidt) method and color space transform (HSV) method, principal component transformation super resolution (PCA) method and Bias method (Pansharp), by which the fused image is more relative with the multi-spectral and SAR.

Abstract:Satellite time series with high spatial resolution is critical for monitoring land surface dynamics in heterogeneous landscapes. Although remote sensing technologies have experienced rapid development in recent years, data acquired from a single satellite sensor are often unable to satisfy our demand. As a result, integrated use of data from different sensors has become increasingly popular in the past decade. Many spatiotemporal data fusion methods have been developed to produce synthesized images with both high spatial and temporal resolutions from two types of satellite images, frequent coarse-resolution images, and sparse fine-resolution images. These methods were designed based on different principles and strategies, and therefore show different strengths and limitations. This diversity brings difficulties for users to choose an appropriate method for their specific applications and data sets. To this end, this review paper investigates literature on current spatiotemporal data fusion methods, categorizes existing methods, discusses the principal laws underlying these methods, summarizes their potential applications, and proposes possible directions for future studies in this field.

Abstract:As the increment of remote sensing data with multi-space resolution, multi-spectral resolution and multi-source, data fusion technologies have been widely used in geological fields. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and optical camera are two most common sensors presently. The multi-spectral optical images express spectral features of ground objects, while SAR images express backscatter information. Accuracy of the image classification could be effectively improved fusing the two kinds of images. In this paper, Terra SAR-X images and ALOS multi-spectral images were fused for land use classification. After preprocess such as geometric rectification, radiometric rectification noise suppression and so on, the two kind images were fused, and then SVM model identification method was used for land use classification. Two different fusion methods were used, one is joining SAR image into multi-spectral images as one band, and the other is direct fusing the two kind images. The former one can raise the resolution and reserve the texture information, and the latter can reserve spectral feature information and improve capability of identifying different features.The experiment results showed that accuracy of classification using fused images is better than only using multi-spectral images. Accuracy of classification about roads, habitation and water bodies was significantly improved. Compared to traditional classification method, the method of this paper for fused images with SVM classifier could achieve better results in identifying complicated land use classes, especially for small pieces ground features.
