Abstract:Performing the correct pen-holding gesture plays an important role in handwriting efficiency and quality, especially for early education. In this paper, we present the design, implementation and evaluation of SmartWriting, which utilizes the smartwatch for pen-holding gesture recognition for both Chinese and English writing. SmartWriting can automatically identify whether the user is writing Chinese or English, based on which two classifiers are built to detect pen-holding gestures by strokes in Chinese characters or English letters. In particular, we propose to leverage the combined signal of one vertical stroke and one horizontal stroke for efficient pen-holding gesture identification in Chinese writing, and we are able to infer pen-holding gesture according to any letter in English writing. We build a fully functional prototype of SmartWriting, and extensive experiments confirm its effectiveness and robustness. The detection accuracy is 9. % and 9 % for Chinese and English respectively. SmartWriting provides a natural, convenient and inexpensive way to improve users' writing habits.

Abstract:Performing the correct pen-holding gesture plays an important role in handwriting efficiency and quality, especially for early education. In this paper, a detailed design and evaluation of the system, called SmartGe, is presented, which can identify the pen-holding gesture with smartwatch when writing Chinese and English. We firstly analyze the hand movement and propose a novel handwriting detection algorithm to segment each stroke or letter. Then we recognize the pen-holding gesture using deep convolution neural network(DCNN). To improve system performance in Chinese writing, we connect a vertical stroke and a horizontal stroke for pen-holding gesture recognition. SmartGe provides a convenient and natural way to improve users; writing habits, which is a lightweight system, and extensive experiments confirm its effectiveness and robustness.

In this study, we design a prototype of a stylus equipped with motion sensor, and utilizes gyroscopic and acceleration sensor reading to perform written letter classification using various deep learning techniques such as CNN and RNNs. Abstract:Determining specific line‐crossing sequences has always posed a challenge for document examiners. Interactions between pen ink and stamp seal ink can be complicated and changeable due to the many seals and writing inks available in the market. This study determines the line‐crossing sequence of stamping before writing by observing the influence of seal ink on pen writing. The results of examining four types of pens and six types of seal ink crossings reveal that assessing the completeness of writing strokes can determine sequencing. Different ink types interact to produce different phenomena. In addition, time interval and pen structure affected the interaction between two inks in a crossing. A 70% accuracy rate was achieved in a nationwide blind test, which will be discussed in this article.

Abstract:Pen-based handwriting has become one of the major human-computer interaction methods. Traditional approaches either require writing on the specific supporting device like the touch screen, or limit the way of using the pen to pure rotation or translation. In this paper, we propose Handwriting-Assistant, to capture the free handwriting of ordinary pens on regular planes with mm-level accuracy. By attaching the inertial measurement unit (IMU) to the pen tail, we can infer the handwriting on the notebook, blackboard or other planes. Particularly, we build a generalized writing model to correlate the rotation and translation of IMU with the tip displacement comprehensively, thereby we can infer the tip trace accurately. Further, to display the effective handwriting during the continuous writing process, we leverage the principal component analysis (PCA) based method to detect the candidate writing plane, and then exploit the distance variation of each segment relative to the plane to distinguish on-plane strokes. Moreover, our solution can apply to other rigid bodies, enabling smart devices embedded with IMUs to act as handwriting tools. Experiment results show that our approach can capture the handwriting with high accuracy, e.g., the average tracking error is 1.84mm for letters with the size of about 2cmx1cm, and the average character recognition rate of recovered single letters achieves 98.2% accuracy of the ground-truth recorded by touch screen.

Abstract:In a digital era that neglects handwriting, the current study is significant because it examines the mechanisms underlying this process. We recruited 9- to 10-year-old Chinese children (n = 24), who were at an important period of handwriting development, and adult college students (n = 24), for both behavioral and electroencephalogram (EEG) experiments. We designed four learning conditions: handwriting Chinese (HC), viewing Chinese (VC), drawing shapes followed by Chinese recognition (DC), and drawing shapes followed by English recognition (DE). Both behavioral and EEG results showed that HC facilitated visual word recognition compared to VC, and behavioral results showed that HC facilitated visual word recognition compared to drawing shapes. HC and VC resulted in a lateralization of the N170 in adults, but not in children. Taken together, the results of the study suggest benefits of handwriting on the neural processing and behavioral performance in response to Chinese characters. The study results argue for maintaining handwriting practices to promote the perception of visual word forms in the digital age.
Examination of the Sequence between Laser Printing and Rollerball Pen Writing Without an Intersecting Stroke

Abstract:Examining the sequences of printing and writing is a significant method of determining the authenticity and validity of documents. Forensic document examiners have extensively studied crossing lines, which has produced useful information. However, the sequence for laser printing and rollerball pen writing without crossing strokes has not been studied. To solve this problem, volunteers were invited to write characters on A4 paper with different rollerball pens using two sequences. Four laser printers applied print to these sheets, and the materials were examined using an Optem A-Zoom2 video tomography microscope. Consequently, distinguishing features were noted between the materials produced in both sequences. These features might provide a scientific basis for accurately determining the sequence between laser printing and rollerball pen writing in the absence of intersecting strokes.

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the effects of finger grip and wrist position on Chinese calligraphy handwriting (CCH). Thirty participants were recruited in the study and asked to manipulate the Chinese brush using two finger grip methods (three-finger grip and five-finger grip) and two wrist positions (suspended wrist and raised wrist). Three experimental writing tasks were applied to investigate writing stability, agility, and hand–eye coordination, and to evaluate the completion time (s), area of error (cm2), and error times. Subjective responses (arm aching level, ease of grip, exertion level, and comfort) regarding the four combinations of Chinese brush manipulation were measured. The results indicated significantly better performance with the three-finger grip for the stability and agility tests, and with the five-finger grip for the hand–eye coordination task. Using the suspended wrist position for CCH allowed better agility and hand–eye coordination than the raised wrist position. In consideration of the results of the four operational combinations, the three-finger grip with a suspended wrist position demonstrated the best performance in both objective and subjective measurements. It is recommended for application in the early learning stage. These findings can be considered when teaching Chinese brushes for beginners of CCH in schools.

Abstract:A comprehensive literature review is conducted on the considerations of the human finger and Chinese character in finger interaction for Chinese input. The results of this study indicate the importance and influences of characteristics of the human finger and Chinese characters on Chinese handwriting. Moreover, fifteen design guidelines are developed based on the literature review to improve the Chinese handwriting performance (i.e. input time, accuracy, error rate, mental workload, satisfaction and physical fatigue) and subjective ratings. Seven guidelines are developed regarding properties of the human finger (i.e. finger size, contact area, motor skill, texture perception and input position). Another eight guidelines are related to characteristics of Chinese characters (i.e. direction, structure, script style, complexity and semantics). These results are in great help of improving the Chinese handwriting performance and user experience. The guidelines are going to help product designers develop a user-friendly Chinese handwriting system.

Abstract:Handwriting is one of the major activities in everybody's life. In order to let people form good habit of writing, handwriting quality evaluation is an important and useful technology. In this paper, a method of Chinese handwriting quality evaluation is proposed based on analysis of online Chinese handwriting recognition confidence. For a given handwritten Chinese character, we firstly calculate the confidence level by the candidate distance obtained from the modified quadratic discriminant function (MQDF) classifier. Then the Chinese handwriting quality is evaluated according to different recognition confidence measurement levels. Experimental results show that the proposed method is reasonable and effective. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:We build a distance education application of a Chinese handwriting education system that allows students to do practice at anytime and anywhere. As an intelligent tutor, the system can automatically check the handwriting errors, such as the stroke production errors, stroke sequence error and stroke relationship error. Then our system should provide useful feedback to the student. In this paper, attributed relational graph matching is used to locate the handwriting errors. The pruning strategy is applied to reduce the computational time. The experiment results show that our proposal can handle more handwriting error cases than existing methods with a higher accuracy.

Abstract:Inappropriate pen-holding postures can result in increased muscle strain and reduced writing speed, and may even contribute to the onset of conditions such as myopia, arthritis, and cervical spondylosis. However, challenges persist in current one-size-fits-all pens toward actively monitoring handwriting habits due to structural complexity and indispensability of power supply. In this study, a finger temperature-driven thermoelectric gel-based smart pen has been invented for identity recognition, stroke analysis, and grip posture assessment by coupling thermogalvanic and piezoresistive effects derived from finger temperature and pressure on a PVA/gelatin gel. This dual-network gel exhibits not only a high thermopower of − 2.05 mV K −1 and a rapid response of 130 ms, but also full flexibility, significant resistance to desiccation, and a high tensile capacity of up to 300%. By integrating thermogalvanic gel units within a pen shaft, our self-powered smart pen achieved a recognition accuracy of 98.1% for eight basic Chinese character strokes with the aid of deep learning. Furthermore, with a four-channel expansion, the recognition accuracy reaches 98.8% for eight distinct identities and 99.1% for nine different pen-holding postures, respectively, while offering real-time visualization of monitoring results on a user-friendly human-machine interface. This machine learning-assisted self-powered smart gel pen presents a new viable solution for wearable bioelectronics toward future intelligent era.

The influence of sensory-motor components of handwriting on Chinese character learning in second- and fourth-grade Chinese children.

Abstract:In the present study, 144 second- and 150 fourth-grade Chinese students were recruited to complete a Chinese character learning task to explore the specific contributions of sensory-motor components (i.e., visual, motor, and haptic systems) of handwriting to Chinese character learning. After matching for age, nonverbal IQ, and a series of cognitive-linguistic skills, each child was assigned to 1 of 4 training conditions (i.e., reading, visual processing, air-writing, or handwriting) to investigate the specific contributions of the sensory-motor components (i.e., visual, motor, and haptic systems) of handwriting to Chinese character learning. In the reading condition, the children were shown images of characters. In the other 3 conditions, they were shown animations of how a given character is written. The participants were asked to view the animations in the visual processing condition, whereas in the air-writing and handwriting conditions they were asked, respectively, to follow the animations and write the Chinese characters with their index fingers in the air or write the Chinese characters with a pen on paper. They were asked to name the learnt characters in the posttest. Both air-writing and handwriting elicited a larger training effect than reading or visual processing, but there was no difference between the air-writing and handwriting groups. Also, no age differences were found in either the air-writing or the handwriting conditions. Unique contributions of visual-motor integration, motor programming, and their corresponding integration with a haptic system of handwriting to reading are discussed.

Abstract:Handwriting plays an important role in written communication, reading, and academic success. However, little is known about the neural correlates of handwriting in children. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a copying task, we investigated regional brain activation and functional lateralization associated with Chinese handwriting in children (N = 36, 9–11 years old), as well as their relations to reading skills. We found significant activation of the bilateral frontal motor cortices, somatosensory cortex, intraparietal sulcus (IPS), fusiform gyrus (FuG), and cerebellum during handwriting, suggesting that an adult-like brain activation pattern emerges by middle childhood. Moreover, children showed left-lateralized and bilateral activation of motor regions and right-lateralized activation of the FuG and cerebellum during handwriting, suggesting that functional lateralization of handwriting is not fully established by this age. Finally, the activation of Exner's area and the lateralization of the IPS and cerebellum during handwriting were correlated with reading skills, possibly representing a neural link between handwriting and reading in children. Collectively, this study reveals the brain correlates of handwriting and their relation to reading development in Chinese children, offering new insight into the development of handwriting and reading skills.

Abstract:The emerging demand for cost‐effective, easily accessible, and rapid prototyping electronics fabrication calls for novel techniques to design and manufacture electronic components and devices for wearable functional sensing, on‐skin medical monitoring, and body‐worn energy conversion. Inspired by daily hand‐writing, innovative and ubiquitously available pens can be employed to write conductive patterns on multiple substrates; such a low‐cost, fast, and user‐friendly direct writing paradigm has recently aroused remarkable research interest as a promising electronics prototyping strategy. In this review, state‐of‐art advances in techniques for direct writing of electronics are presented, and pros and cons of each fabrication route are discussed. Emerging applications of pen‐based writing electronics are also summarized. Based on these, final conclusions, limitations and challenges, as well as ongoing perspectives are illustrated.

Abstract:Background and objectives: Alzheimer's disease (AD) has an insidious onset, the early stages are easily overlooked, and there are no reliable, rapid, and inexpensive ancillary detection methods. This study analyzes the differences in handwriting kinematic characteristics between AD patients and normal elderly people to model handwriting characteristics. The aim is to investigate whether handwriting analysis has a promising future in AD auxiliary screening or even auxiliary diagnosis and to provide a basis for developing a handwriting-based diagnostic tool. Materials and methods: Thirty-four AD patients (15 males, 77.15 ± 1.796 years) and 45 healthy controls (20 males, 74.78 ± 2.193 years) were recruited. Participants performed four writing tasks with digital dot-matrix pens which simultaneously captured their handwriting as they wrote. The writing tasks consisted of two graphics tasks and two textual tasks. The two graphics tasks are connecting fixed dots (task 1) and copying intersecting pentagons (task 2), and the two textual tasks are dictating three words (task 3) and copying a sentence (task 4). The data were analyzed by using Student's t -test and Mann–Whitney U test to obtain statistically significant handwriting characteristics. Moreover, seven classification algorithms, such as eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGB) and Logistic Regression (LR) were used to build classification models. Finally, the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and Area Under Curve (AUC) were used to assess whether writing scores and kinematics parameters are diagnostic. Results: Kinematic analysis showed statistically significant differences between the AD and controlled groups for most parameters ( p < 0.05, p < 0.01). The results found that patients with AD showed slower writing speed, tremendous writing pressure, and poorer writing stability. We built statistically significant features into a classification model, among which the model built by XGB was the most effective with a maximum accuracy of 96.55%. The handwriting characteristics also achieved good diagnostic value in the ROC analysis. Task 2 had a better classification effect than task 1. ROC curve analysis showed that the best threshold value was 0.084, accuracy = 96.30%, sensitivity = 100%, specificity = 93.41%, PPV = 92.21%, NPV = 100%, and AUC = 0.991. Task 4 had a better classification effect than task 3. ROC curve analysis showed that the best threshold value was 0.597, accuracy = 96.55%, sensitivity = 94.20%, specificity = 98.37%, PPV = 97.81%, NPV = 95.63%, and AUC = 0.994. Conclusion: This study's results prove that handwriting characteristic analysis is promising in auxiliary AD screening or AD diagnosis.

Abstract:There are many important cultural relics in China, including many paper relics. Therefore, it is particularly important to find methods of protecting the handwriting in paper relics. This study focuses on the effects acrylic polyurethane materials have on preserving handwriting in paper relics by examining the color change and diffusion of handwriting before and after reinforcement treatments on handwriting materials, including ink, carbon ink, blue-black ink, pure blue ink, red ink, and pencil. The acrylic polyurethane materials have a certain degree of stability and enhance the handwriting of paper relics. We analyzed the acrylic polyurethane reinforcement material in terms of acid resistance, alkali resistance, oxidation resistance, dry heat aging resistance, and durability. The experimental results show that the optimal reinforcement concentration is within 15% for ink, 10% for carbon ink, 20% for blue-black ink, 15% to 20% for pure blue ink, and 3% for red ink and pencil. Finally, the surface of the reinforced paper and handwriting were observed through laser microscopy, SEM, EDS, and infrared spectroscopy and the protective effect of acrylic polyurethane reinforcement material on handwriting was determined.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the off-line signature verification scheme. The distinction in our work is that we have taken more consideration with the Chinese signature structure. And we present four main features for the optimization of the verification of the Chinese signatures, viz, the envelop of the signature, cross-count feature, center of gravity of sub-region and distance between vectors made of center of gravity, and area of embedded white space. Experimental results show that the combination of the four-feature based classifiers increases the verification accuracy, particularly for the Chinese signature verification.
A Smart Pen Based on Triboelectric Effects for Handwriting Pattern Tracking and Biometric Identification

Abstract:The rapid development of artificial intelligence places high demands on human-machine interfaces. Various types of huma-machine interfaces have been implemented, including smart keyboards, electronic skins, and wearable motion sensors. Handwriting behavior has a high degree of interaction freedom, and handwriting characteristics offer high-security standards for human-machine systems. Herein, we propose a portable smart pen integrated with triboelectric displacement vector sensors to trace handwriting trajectories for human-machine interactions and biometric identification. A triboelectric pressure sensor array is evenly distributed along the pen case to sense displacement vectors, and an additional triboelectric sensor is placed on top of the pen to detect vertical force. By leveraging the resin pen refill as a tribopositive material and a nanowired polyethylene tribonegative layer attached to a Cu electrode, triboelectric signals are generated during the writing/moving process. The calculation and analysis of the sensor signals enable the recognition of handwritten patterns, including Latin letters and Arabic numerals. Moreover, the smart pen can be used to authenticate users based on their unique handwriting patterns, which can help take human-machine interfaces and cyber security to the next level. Furthermore, a custom smart pen operation mode that enables the control of a slide presentation demonstrates the smart pen's potential for various human-machine interface applications.

Abstract:Chinese calligraphic handwriting (CCH) is a traditional art form that requires high levels of concentration and motor control. Previous research has linked short-term training in CCH to improvements in attention and memory. Little is known about the potential impacts of long-term CCH practice on a broader array of executive functions and their potential neural substrates. In this cross-sectional study, we recruited 36 practitioners with at least 5 years of CCH experience and 50 control subjects with no more than one month of CCH practice and investigated their differences in the three components of executive functions (i.e., shifting, updating, and inhibition). Valid resting-state fMRI data were collected from 31 CCH and 40 control participants. Compared with the controls, CCH individuals showed better updating (as measured by the Corsi Block Test) and inhibition (as measured by the Stroop Word-Color Test), but the two groups did not differ in shifting (as measured by a cue-target task). The CCH group showed stronger resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) than the control group in brain areas involved in updating and inhibition. These results suggested that long-term CCH training may be associated with improvements in specific aspects of executive functions and strengthened neural networks in related brain regions.
