Abstract:The most dominant error source for microwave ranging is the frequency instability of the oscillator that generates the carrier phase signal. The oscillator noise is very difficult to filter due to its extremely low frequency. A dual transponder carrier ranging method can effectively minimize the oscillator noise by combing the reference phase and the to-and-fro measurement phase from the same single oscillator. This method does not require an accurate time tagging system, since it extracts phases on the same satellite. This paper analyzes the dual transponder carrier ranging system by simulation of the phase measurements with comprehensive error models. Both frequency domain and time domain noise transfer characteristics were simulated to compare them with dual one-way ranging. The simulation results in the two domains conformed to each other and demonstrated that a high level of accuracy can also be achieved by use of the dual transponder carrier ranging system, with relatively simple instruments.
Target-oriented Optimized Survey Design and Quantitative Comparison for 3D Electrical Resistivity Tomography

Abstract:In recent decades, geoelectrical methods have played a very important role in near-surface investigation. The most widely used of these methods is electrical resistivity tomography (ERT). Regardless of the forward and inversion algorithms used, the original data collected from a survey is the most important factor for quality of the resulted model. However, 3D electrical resistivity survey design continues to be based on data sets recorded using one or more of the standard electrode arrays. There is a recognized need for the 3D survey design to get better resolution using fewer data. Choosing suitable data from the comprehensive data set is a great approach. By reasonable selecting, better resolution can be obtained with fewer electrodes and measurements than conventional arrays. Previous research has demonstrated that the optimized survey design using the 'Compare R' method can give a nice performance.This paper adds target-oriented selection and modified the original 'Compare R' method. The survey design should be focused on specific target areas, which need a priori information about the subsurface properties. We select electrodes and configurations as the target set by the comprehensive set firstly which meets the requirements of the target area. The number of measurements and electrodes is much less than the comprehensive set and the model resolution matrix takes less time to calculate. At the next step for rank, we calculate the sensitivity matrix of the target set only once and then calculate the contribution degree of each measurement separately from it. The time of iterative calculation of the resolution matrix when measurements set changing is less than the original method.The traditional method of evaluating RMS is not appropriate for comparing the quality of collected data by different survey designs. SSIM (structural similarity index) gives more reliable measures of image similarity better than the RMS. The curves of SSIM values in three dimensions and the average SSIM are given as quantitative comparisons. Besides, the frequency of electrodes utilized given to guides on selecting the highest used electrodes. Finally, the curves of the average relative resolution S and the number of electrodes as the number of measurements increase are given, which proves the method works effectively.The results show the significance of using target-oriented optimized survey design, as it selects fewer electrodes and arrays than the original CR method. Also, it produces better resolution than conventional arrays and takes less calculation time. 3D SSIM, frequency of electrodes used, the relationship between average relative resolution, number of electrodes and number of measurements, these quantitative comparison methods can effectively evaluate the data collected in various survey designs.

Abstract:With the progress of simulation technologies, many transportation simulation packages were developed. However, little information is available to the users in applying these models to the most appropriate situations, or even seldom with the simulation accuracy of the individual model. This study conducts a comparative analysis of two popular simulation models (VISSIM and CORSIM), based on their simulation performances on an urban transportation network. Road network and field traffic data from North Bund, Hongkou District, Shanghai, China were used as the simulation background and input. Sensitivity analysis was carried out to compare the performance of both models based on four key indices, namely software usability, average control delay, average queuing length, and cross-sectional traffic volume. Advantages of each simulator were identified based on comparison analyses of simulations with different levels of congestion and intersection geospatial scales. The main performance difference was found lying in the default parameter configuration within the models, including driver behavior settings, traffic environment settings, and vehicle types, etc. Consequently, it was recommended that analysts should choose their appropriate tools based on intersection type and level of saturation within the simulation case.
Application of RTK GPS Network in Cadastral Surveys

Abstract:It is very important to establish and maintain the geodetic networks in cadastral surveys, while the relative carrier phase-based GPS measurements can be tied to the reference station with precise coordinates. The connection is not required as long as network distortions can be either neglected or modeled. Therefore, it is very suitable to establish RTK GPS framework and the cost of classical monumented networks can be reduced. For those applications requiring sub-decimeter-level accuracy in real time, the working radius of a field station is limited to less than 10 km. To solve this problem, the spatial and temporal correlations of GPS measurement errors introduced by ionosphere, troposphere, and satellite orbit need to be modeled in a real time multi-station solution. Aiming at this issue, an analysis on establishment and results of the GPS network in some city is undertaken and some proposals are given.

Abstract:Currently, network real-time kinematic (NRTK) technology is one of the primary approaches used to achieve real-time dynamic high-precision positioning, and virtual reference station (VRS) technology, with its high accuracy and compatibility, has become the most important type of network RTK solution. The key to its successful implementation lies in correctly fixing integer ambiguities and extracting spatially correlated errors. This paper first introduces real-time data processing flow on the VRS server side. Subsequently, an improved ionosphere-weighted VRS approach is proposed based on single-differenced observations of GPS, GAL, and BDS. With the prerequisite of ensuring estimable integer properties of ambiguities, it directly estimates the single-differenced ionospheric delay and tropospheric delay between reference stations, reducing the double-differenced (DD) observation noise introduced by conventional models and accelerating the system initialization speed. Based on this, we provide an equation for generating virtual observations directly based on single-differenced atmospheric corrections without specifying the pivot satellite. This further simplifies the calculation process and enhances the efficiency of the solution. Using Australian CORS data for testing and analysis, and employing the approach proposed in this paper, the average initialization time on the server side was 40 epochs, and the average number of available satellites reached 23 (with an elevation greater than 20°). Two positioning modes, 'Continuous' (CONT) and 'Instantaneous' (INST), were employed to evaluate VRS user positioning accuracy, and the distance covered between the user and the master station was between 20 and 50 km. In CONT mode, the average positioning errors in the E/N/U directions were 0.67/0.82/1.98 cm, respectively, with an average success fixed rate of 98.76% (errors in all three directions were within 10 cm). In INST mode, the average positioning errors in the E/N/U directions were 1.29/1.29/2.13 cm, respectively, with an average success fixed rate of 89.56%. The experiments in this study demonstrate that the proposed approach facilitates efficient ambiguity resolution (AR) and atmospheric parameter extraction on the server side, thus enabling users to achieve centimeter-level positioning accuracy instantly.

Abstract:Abstract. The surveying and mapping administrative competent departments in 31 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) have built provincial-level satellite navigation and positioning reference stations and data centers, and provided CORS services. This provides a good condition for exploring the application of geological hazard monitoring and early warning using Virtual Reference Station (VRS) service based on CORS. At present, the layout mode of "one point one reference station" is usually adopted, when GNSS is used for geological disaster monitoring and early warning. However, the high deployment cost of this plan limits its largescale promotion and application. Using the existing CORS service resources of natural resource system, this paper carried out the application experiment of virtual reference station in geological hazard monitoring application at Huanglongya geological hazard monitoring site in Shaanxi Province, and assessed the virtual reference station data quality, comparative analyzed the precision of static baseline processing results and GNSS real-time deformation monitoring results. The experimental results show that the overall quality of virtual reference station data is better than that of the monitoring station, and the accuracy of the static baseline calculation results is better than 1.0cm in the X direction, and better than 2.0cm in the Y direction and Z direction, which is similar to the static baseline calculation results formed by the physical reference station. The accuracy of the baseline results of real-time observation data calculation is better than 5mm in horizontal RMS and 15mm in vertical RMS. Therefore, it can be seen that the virtual reference station is feasible to be used as the reference station for geological disaster monitoring. In addition, the application experiment of network RTK real-time dynamic single epoch positioning mode is also carried out in geological hazard monitoring. The experimental results show that the RMS values of all three directions are ±3.7mm, ±9.2mm and ±5.0mm respectively, which meet the precision requirements of GNSS disaster monitoring. Therefore, it is also a feasible scheme for geological disaster monitoring and early warning.
The Utilization Analysis of FKP Network RTK for Site Surveying

Abstract:The recent increase in the number of network RTK users has led to a longer wait time for connecting to the existing VRS service, and consequently caused inconvenience such as a longer turnaround time for surveys. To resolve such issue, the NGII has developed the FKP service that involves a one-way communication. However, it is not spreading across the market as fast as anticipated, due to accuracy problems in the field. This study uses eight unified control points for a reliability assessment to compare and analyze the survey results obtained through the VRS and FKP services in various ways. The analysis reveals that the standard deviation of the FKP service is , which is two times larger than that of the VRS, whilst its standard errors are X:-0.025m and Y:0.011m, proving that it is reliable to be used in the field. Therefore, we expect that the FKP service is going to be more broadly utilized for field surveys in the future.
Improvement and Comparison of Multi-Reference Station Regional Tropospheric Delay Modeling Method Considering the Effect of Height Difference

Abstract:Tropospheric delay information is particularly important for network RTK (Network Real-time Kinematic) positioning. Conventionally, tropospheric delay information at a virtual reference station (VRS) is obtained using the linear interpolation method (LIM). However, the conventional LIM cannot work well when there is a substantial height difference between the rover station and the reference station. Consequently, we propose a modified linear interpolation method (MLIM) by carefully handling the height difference between the rover station and the reference station. The new MLIM method first corrects the systematic error of the double-difference (DD) tropospheric delay in the elevation direction caused by the height difference, and then utilizes the linear interpolation algorithm to obtain the tropospheric delay of the VRS station. To determine the parameters of the low-order surface model (LSM), we also propose a modified LSM (MLSM) interpolation method in the triangular network and evaluate it in the positioning domains. The two new interpolation methods are evaluated using two regional GNSS networks with obvious height disparities. Results show that the DD tropospheric delay interpolation accuracy obtained by the new MLIM and MLSM is improved by 56.5% and 78.7% on average in the two experiments compared to the conventional method. The new MLIM and MLSM are more accurate than the traditional LIM (TLIM) in cases with low elevation satellites. Additionally, the positioning accuracies are improved by using the MLIM and MLSM methods. The MLIM and MLSM outperform TLIM in the up-component by an average of 72.8% and 80.7%, respectively.

Abstract:PPP-RTK combines the advantages of both precise point positioning (PPP) and real-time kinematic (RTK) techniques. While constructing PPP-RTK models based on undifferenced and uncombined observations offers apparent benefits, these observation equations suffer from a rank deficiency issue. To address this problem, the Singularity-system (S-system) theory can be utilized. This theory imposes constraints on a minimal subset of parameters, known as the S-basis, by setting them to arbitrary values, typically zeros. Despite the existence of multiple options for the S-basis, prevailing research conventionally selects the parameters of one receiver—the pivot—as the S-basis. In this study, we depart from this practice by selecting the mean of receiver-related parameters as the S-basis. This departure prompts an exploration into how the S-basis choices influence PPP-RTK outcomes regarding network product precision and user positioning performance. Our comparative analysis of the mean receiver (MR) and pivot receiver (PR) models unveils distinctions in the combined product precision. These products include satellite clocks, satellite phase biases, and ionospheric delays (excluding tropospheric delays). The distinction emerges because the estimable satellite clocks in the PR model incorporate atmospheric delays specific to the pivot receiver, in contrast to the MR model, which integrates mean atmospheric delays from all receivers. Despite the distinction in the analytical form of combined product and its precision, both model results in similar positioning performance. This is because variations in product precision levels caused by selecting different atmospheric parameters as the S-basis can be nullified by the parameterized atmospheric delays on the user side. With the inclusion of tropospheric delays, the PR and MR models also demonstrate similar performance and yield more accurate user positioning when located near the pivot receiver compared to positions farther from the pivot receiver when employing ambiguity-float network products. This dependence on the pivot receiver stems from both models selecting the pivot receiver ambiguities as the S-basis, while opting for mean ambiguities across all receivers negates the integer nature of ambiguities. Our conclusion underscores that identical positioning outcomes in PR and MR PPP-RTK models rely on both models selecting the same ambiguities as the S-basis. This highlights the potential variability in PPP-RTK performance when different ambiguity parameters are selected as the S-basis, particularly in the absence of network integer ambiguity resolution.

Abstract:Currently, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Real-Time Kinematic positioning (RTK) and Precise Point Positioning (PPP) techniques are widely employed for real-time monitoring of landslides. However, both RTK and PPP monitoring techniques have their limitations, such as limited service coverage or long convergence times. PPP-RTK technique which integrates RTK and PPP is a novel approach for monitoring landslides with the advantages of rapid convergence, high-precision, and a wide service area. This study summarizes the limitations of RTK, PPP, and PPP-RTK monitoring techniques and suggests some improved strategies. Their performances are compared and analyzed using real monitoring data. The experiment results demonstrate that RTK is the best option for small-scale (the baseline distance < 15 km) and real-time landslide monitoring without considering the cost. PPP technique converges to centimeter-level accuracy in tens of minutes, only suitable for the stability analysis of reference stations. Over a large area (the baseline distance < 100 km), PPP-RTK can provide excellent horizontal accuracy and adapt the service range in response to the demand for monitoring accuracy, as the vertical accuracy is significantly impacted by the service range and elevation difference. Finally, the characteristics of three techniques are integrated to form a comprehensive landslide monitoring technique that considers intelligence, robustness, and real-time.

Performance Analysis of Source Ranging by Use of Virtual Receiver Technique under Different Frequency Bands

Abstract:The traditional matched field processing localization need complicated computation to get the replica field and has high dependence on environment parameters and acoustic field model.To overcome the shortcoming,virtual receiver technique is used for source ranging.A virtual receiver is constructed by correlating the two signals of the guide source and the objective source received by a vertical line array.Then,the slope of the interference striation of the virtual field is estimated using relevant signal processing method.Combining with the waveguide invariant β,the range of the objective source is determined.Through the numerical simulations and data processing collected from the experiment carried out in the South China Sea in 2004,the virtual receiver technique for broadband source ranging under the slopebottom shallow water environment is discussed.As the frequency increases,the frequency bands should be broadened to obtain complete interference striation for good ranging results.In data processing,the receiving array spacing is too large to promise the orthogonality of the modes as the frequency increases and ranging results become worse.
An Efficient BDS-3 Long-Range Undifferenced Network RTK Positioning Algorithm

Abstract:In 2020, the BeiDou-3 global navigation satellite system (BDS-3) was officially completed and put into service. Currently, network real-time kinematic (RTK) technology is considered the main means through which to improve the positioning accuracy of the BeiDou navigation satellite system (BDS). This paper proposes a long-range undifferenced network RTK (URTK) algorithm, based on multi-frequency observation data of the BDS. First, the multi-frequency phase integer ambiguity resolution (AR) model considering atmospheric error parameters is designed, and the multi-frequency phase integer ambiguity of the long-range BDS reference station is determined. Then, the undifferenced integer ambiguity of each reference station is obtained, using linear variation based on the accurately determined phase integer ambiguity between reference stations, and the undifferenced observation error of each reference station is calculated. Considering the weakening spatial correlation of the observation errors between long-range stations, undifferenced classification error corrections of a reference station network are separated, according to different error characteristics. Finally, the inverse distance weighting method is employed to calculate the classification undifferenced error correction of the rover station. The rover station corrects the observation error through applying the undifferenced error correction to achieve high-precision positioning. The measured data of a long-range continuous operation reference station (CORS) network are selected for an experiment. The results show that the proposed algorithm can quickly and accurately realize the resolution of the BDS integer ambiguity of a reference station network and establish an undifferenced area error correction model in order to achieve accurate classification of undifferenced error correction values for a rover station. In China, the BDS-3 is superior to the global positioning system (GPS) in terms of the satellite number, position dilution of precision (PDOP) value, AR success rate, stability, and convergence time. The results show that the AR success rate, stability, and convergence time increase with the operational frequency, and the BDS-3 can achieve centimeter-level positioning of single-system rover stations without relying on the GPS.

Comparison of Four RTK Receivers Operating in the Static and Dynamic Modes Using Measurement Robotic Arm

Abstract:While the existing research provides a wealth of information about the static properties of RTK receivers, less is known about their dynamic properties, although it is clear that the vast majority of field operations take place when the machine is moving. A new method using a MRA for the evaluation of RTK receivers in movement with a precise circular reference trajectory (r = 3 m) was proposed. This reference method was developed with the greatest possible emphasis on the positional, time and repeatable accuracy of ground truth. Four phases of the measurement scenario (static, acceleration, uniform movement and deceleration) were used in order to compare four different types of RTK receiver horizontal operation accuracy over three measurement days. The worst result of one of the receivers was measured at SSR = 13.767% in dynamic movement. Since the same "low-cost" receiver without an INS unit had SSR = 98.14% in previous static measurements, so it can be assumed that the motion had a very significant effect on the dynamic properties of this receiver. On the other hand, the best "high-end" receiver with an INS unit had SSR = 96.938% during the dynamic testing scenarios. The median values of the deviations were always better during uniform movements than during acceleration or braking. In general, the positioning accuracy was worse in the dynamic mode than in the static one for all the receivers. Error indicators (RMSerr and Me) were found several times higher in the dynamic mode than in the static one. These facts should be considered in the future development of modern agricultural machinery and technology.
A New Asynchronous RTK Method to Mitigate Base Station Observation Outages

Abstract:Real-time kinematic (RTK) positioning is a satellite navigation technique that is widely used to enhance the precision of position data obtained from global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). This technique can reduce or eliminate significant correlation errors via the enhancement of the base station observation data. However, observations received by the base station are often interrupted, delayed, and/or discontinuous, and in the absence of base station observation data the corresponding positioning accuracy of a rover declines rapidly. With the strategies proposed till date, the positioning accuracy can only be maintained at the centimeter-level for a short span of time, no more than three min. To address this, a novel asynchronous RTK method (that addresses asynchronous errors) that can bridge significant gaps in the observations at the base station is proposed. First, satellite clock and orbital errors are eliminated using the products of the final precise ephemeris during post-processing or the ultra-rapid precise ephemeris during real-time processing. Then the tropospheric error is corrected using the Saastamoinen model and the asynchronous ionospheric delay is corrected using the carrier phase measurements from the rover receiver. Finally, a straightforward first-degree polynomial function is used to predict the residual asynchronous error. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach can achieve centimeter-level accuracy for as long as 15 min during interruptions in both real-time and post-processing scenarios, and that the accuracy of the real-time scheme can be maintained for 15 min even when a large systematic error is projected in the U direction.
A Comprehensive Comparison of Photogrammetric and RTK-GPS Methods for General Order Land Surveying

Abstract:One of the main objectives of modern-day surveying is to maximize the efficiency and accuracy of mapping a landscape for natural features and elevations prior to the start of a construction project. This paper focuses on a comparison between terrestrial and aerial photogrammetry and real-time kinematic global positioning systems (RTK-GPSs) in terms of elevation accuracy, data expenditure, and time for each survey to be completed. Two sites in San Diego County were chosen to be studied with a combined area of about 1.14 acres, and a total station system was used to establish 572 control points between both areas. Two of the three methods investigated produced similar results in elevation and were well within the established standard, as the terrestrial photogrammetry averaged 0.0583 feet of error, the aerial photogrammetry averaged 0.345 feet of error, and the RTK-GPS averaged 0.0432 feet of error when compared to the total station ground truth. If data consumption is not a concern, the terrestrial photogrammetric method should be preferred to the aerial photogrammetric and RTK-GPS methods in topographic mapping and land monitoring due to the increase in time efficiency and in surface model detail while keeping within the Caltrans specified tolerance of error of 0.2 feet. For general order land surveys, the photogrammetric approach utilized with a Looq scanner would provide the most efficient and cost-effective survey while staying within the 0.2 foot tolerance of error. This method also allows for the utmost clarity of the resulting point cloud when analyzing terrain, break lines, or other features in the survey area.

Abstract:Localization is always a critical technology of wireless networks.This paper introduces the theory of RSS-based localization and analyzes four RSS-based localization algorithms:model-based multi-distance measurement,model based MAP(maximum a posterior),point-matching and RSS-map-based MAP.This paper compares their localization accuracy and the impact factors such as beacon number and data quantity on average accuracy by outdoor experiments.Further more,this paper analyzes their calibration complexity,computing intensity and storage quantity.The result indicates that higher cost of calibration,computing and storage as well as increasing quantity of data and beacon can obviously improve the localization accuracy.

Abstract:Digital topographic mapping experiments were carried out based on network RTK technology using GPS/BEIDOU/GLONASS multi-constellation compatible GNSS receivers in urban obstructed environment. Operation scheme and technique flow were discussed. Experimental results show that the horizontal position and elevation of the points measured by RTK can reach 2cm and 3cm precision level respectively in open environment. RTK initialization time needs about 3-5s. While in obstructed environment, such as high building and tree shanding, the RTK initialization time needs about dozens of seconds or tens of seconds, and sometimes floating solutions or even differential solutions were obtained. The impact of dense and tall building on RTK measurement is more seriously. It is more likely to get RTK fixed solution in the south side of high building than the north side of the building.

Abstract:We here address problems of nonunique paths and poor fault tolerance in the traditional shortest path transfer method and propose an overall adjustment method of relative corrections of master reference stations in BDS/GNSS Network RTK systems. Our method comprehensively considers the vector relationship of baseline error corrections, the baseline closure error of Delaunay triangulation and the interpolation relationship between stations to realize the one-time generation, obtaining all relative error corrections of the master reference station in a network RTK system. The test results showed that our method can achieve a success rate of more than 95% and an incorrect rate of less than 0.01%. The error corrections, generated by the two methods, are verified and analysed by the positioning accuracy of the rover. The results show that the positioning accuracy of the method in this paper is improved by about 17% over the shortest path transfer method.

Abstract:Robust and centimeter-level Real-time Kinematic (RTK)-based Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positioning is of paramount importance for emerging GNSS applications, such as drones and automobile systems. However, the performance of conventional single-rover RTK degrades greatly in urban environments due to signal blockage and strong multipath. The increasing use of multiple-antenna/rover configurations for attitude determination in the above precise positioning applications, just as well, allows more information involved to improve RTK positioning performance in urban areas. This paper proposes a dual-antenna constraint RTK algorithm, which combines GNSS measurements of both antennas by making use of the geometric constraint between them. By doing this, the reception diversity between two antennas can be taken advantage of to improve the availability and geometric distribution of GNSS satellites, and what is more, the redundant measurements from a second antenna help to weaken the multipath effect on the first antenna. Particularly, an Ambiguity Dilution of Precision (ADOP)-based analysis is carried out to explore the intrinsic model strength for ambiguity resolution (AR) with different kinds of constraints. Based on the results, a Dual-Antenna with baseline VEctor Constraint algorithm (RTK) is developed. The primary advantages of the reported method include: 1) Improved availability and success rate of RTK, even if neither of the two single-antenna receivers can successfully solve the AR problem; and 2) reduced computational burden by adopting the concept of measurement projection. Simulated and real data experiments are performed to demonstrate robustness and precision of the algorithm in GNSS-challenged environments.

Abstract:A modified SX (spherical intersection) method is proposed for the target localization frogm rane-difference measurements when sensors are arranged in an approximate plane. This algorithm, which first solves target's altitude and avoids ill-conditioned system of equation, can improve the location accuracy with the same operating complexity. It also makes use of system's redundant information effectively by weighted least squares estimators.Its performance is compared with that of the existing techniques of spherical intersection, quadratic-correction least squares estimators, and the Cramer-Rho lower bound. Numerical studies demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is simple and effective.
