Abstract:Plant oil has become to be one of the most important bio-feedstock,and many plant-oil-based plastics with wide applications are synthesized via various methods. These plant-oil-based plastics can partly replace petroleum-based plastics,ease the oil crisis,and meet the demand for sustainable development; meanwhile,plant oil has plentiful resources,and its products are inherently biodegradable,so it has a broad potential application in daily life and the medical field. Through the review of the synthesis of plant-oil-based plastics,and several simple analyses of scope,limitations and the feasibility of the materials,those will contribute to the research of plant-oil-based plastics in the future.
Development of Novel Soy Protein-Based Polymer Blends

Abstract:A novel approach was used in the preparation of soy protein concentrate (SPC) and biodegradable thermoplastic blends. In contrast to many other soy protein (SP) blends where SP functioned merely as a filler, in this study SPC was processed as a plastic in blending with poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), respectively. The plastication of SP and blending of the resulting SP plastic with PLA or PBAT were performed in the same extrusion process. The plastication involved gelation of SPC in the presence of water and subsequent plasticization of the gelated SPC by water and/or other plasticizer. The resulting PLA/SPC blends displayed a co-continuous phase structure and PBAT/SPC blends a percolated SPC network structure. Consequently, the blends demonstrated superior mechanical properties.

Abstract:Bio‐based mechanically robust supramolecular plastics are conveniently and cost‐effectively fabricated by cross‐linking epoxidized soybean oil and low‐molecular‐weight polylactic acid with boroxines. The plastic is biocompatible, water‐resistant, and recyclable. The breakage of boroxine cross‐links continuously releases soybean oils and low‐molecular‐weight polylactic acids, which enables complete and rapid degradation of the plastic into non‐toxic species in soil within ≈60 days. To promote the sustainable development of society, it is important to develop methods for facile fabrication of bio‐based plastics that are mechanically robust and capable of recycling and completely degrading in soil. In this study, such bio‐based supramolecular plastics are conveniently and cost‐effectively fabricated by cross‐linking epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) and low‐molecular‐weight polylactic acid (PLA) (≈2 kDa) with dynamic boroxines. The bio‐based supramolecular plastic, which is denoted as ESO‐PLA, exhibits a tensile strength of ≈43 MPa and is highly flexible and water‐resistant. After being stored in an environment with a 100% relative humidity for 10 days, the tensile strength of the plastic remains higher than polyethylene. Due to the reversibility of boroxines, the ESO‐PLA plastic can be conveniently processed into different shapes and products. Meanwhile, the plastic can be recycled multiple times for repeated usage by either hot‐pressing or solvent‐assisted depolymerization/repolymerization methods. Benefiting from the easy degradation of ESO and low‐molecular‐weight PLA, the breakage of boroxine cross‐links enables rapid and complete degradation of the plastics in soil within 60 days. Additionally, in vitro and in vivo tests prove that the ESO‐PLA plastic exhibits satisfactory biocompatibility, which extends its application in medicine, food, and cosmetics industries.

Abstract:Nowadays many researches are carried out to find renewable natural resources because of the depletion of oil resources and pollution from waste plastics. There are many advantages of green plastic exploration. The production of bio-based plastic, which does not rely on petroleum anymore, can alleviate the shortage of oil resources. Many bioplastic products can be degraded and reused, creating less pollution and less cost than traditional petroleum-based plastics. This article provides an overview of three bio-based resources and the evaluation of their products: lignin, limonene and cardanol. Lignin has a strong intermolecular force which can lead to many kinds of functionally enhanced composites with PE, PP, PVC and so on. Limonene as inexpensive raw material, can replace some kinds of monomers from petroleum and copolymerize with CO2 to produce poly-carbonate. Cardanol, as a natural compound, can be added to some plastics and improve its flexural strength. And the applications of those bio-based plastics are discussed emphatically.
Processing and characterization of biodegradable soy plastics: Effects of crosslinking with glyoxal and thermal treatment

Abstract:Abstract Processing and modification routes to produce and to improve properties of biodegradable plastics from soy isolate were studied. Soy isolate, acid‐treated and crosslinked soy were subsequently compounded, extruded, and injection molded. Acetic acid and glyoxal were examined concerning their suitability for acid treating and crosslinking of soy, and their effect on the final properties of the obtained materials. Heat treatment was also used as a possible methodology to crosslink the protein structure. The molded specimens were tested in terms of their tensile properties and solubility at different pHs, and were also evaluated for the degree of crosslinking and molecular weight distributions. The obtained plastics were rigid and brittle with stiffness ranging from 1436 MPa for soy, to 1229 MPa for glyoxal crosslinked soy, up to 2698 MPa for heat‐treated soy. The differences in stiffness were discussed in terms of the crosslinking efficiency and spatial distribution. The solubility profiles were studied as a function of the pH of the immersion solutions and the crosslinking degree of each material. A reduction in protein solubility with decreasing pH was observed, with a minimum between pH 4 and 5 and a resolubilization of the protein at pHs lower than pH 4 and greater than 8. Higher levels of crosslinking resulted in a decrease of the solubility and an aggregation of the protein molecules. The soy plastics proved to be very versatile materials with potential to be used in applications where quite demanding performances are expected, such as in the biomedical field. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Degradable bioplastics have attracted growing interest worldwide. However, it is challenging to develop bioplastics with a simple processing procedure, strong mechanical performance, good biocompatibility, and adjustable physicochemical properties. Herein, we introduced structural proteins as building blocks and developed a simple environmentally friendly approach to fabricate diverse protein-based plastics. A cost-effective and high-level production approach was developed through batch fermentation of Escherichia coli to produce the biomaterials. These bioplastics possess super plasticity, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and high resistance to organic solvents. Their structural and mechanical properties can be precisely controlled. Besides, high density information storage and hemostatic applications were realized in the bioplastic system. The customizable bioplastics have great potential for applications in numerous fields and are capable to scale up to the industrial level.

Abstract:Recently, there is an increasing interest of using bio-based polymers instead of conventional petroleum-based polymers to fabricate biodegradable materials. Soy protein isolate (SPI), a protein with reproducible resource, good biocompatibility, biodegradability, and processability, has a significant potential in the food industry, agriculture, bioscience, and biotechnology. Up to now, several technologies have been applied to prepare SPI-based materials wit:a equivalent or superior physical and mechanical properties compared with petroleum-based materials. The aim of this review is focused on discussion of the advantages and limitations of native SPI as well as the bulk and surface modification cation strategies for SPI. Moreover, some applications of SPI-based materials, especially for food preservation and packaging technology, were discussed.

Abstract:Research and development of biodegradable materials is one of the effective approaches to solving the environmental pollution problems which come from the traditional petroleum-based plastics. Polylactic acid (PLA) has so many good properties such as full biodegradability,good thermal processibility,renewablility,high mechanical performance and so on. It is an inevitable trend to replace the petroleum-based plastics. However,the properties of hydrophobicity,poor toughness and high price are obstacles for the application of PLA. All of these result in attracting much attention in the research of modification of PLA. In this paper,the recent research on biodegradable PLA system including blending with natural polymer and synthetic polymer is summarized. The effect of processing technology,surface treatment and additives on the composite material is presented. Further research could be flexible polymer,surfactant,and various fibers to improve the brittleness,compatibility, and strength of the cromposite material.

Abstract:Formamineg,lycerol–formamine complex,urea or SDS and soy proteins were mixed at different ratios and hot press molded for making soy protein plastics.Mechanical properties of the plastics were investigated by using an Instron testing system.The results showed that elongation at break and fracture energy of formamineg,lycerol–formamine complex at 3% for mamine content or urea modified plastics increasedi,ndicating improvement of flexbility and toughness of the plastics.Howevert,ensile strength and Young's modulus of Formamine,glycerol–formamine complex,urea or SDS modified plastics decreased.

Abstract:With the continuously increasing demands of plastic products in the current society, the challenge of disposing plastic waste is constantly increasing, leading to the urgent need of mitigating plastic pollution. As a consequence, much attention has been paid to biodegradable plastics due to their degradability in a bio-active environment under certain conditions. Biodegradable plastics herald vast development potentials and considerable market prospects. The degradation of numerous types of biodegradable plastics will be affected by many factors. A thorough understanding of degradation mechanisms as well as functional microbial strains and enzymes is the key to comprehensive utilization and efficient treatment and disposal of biodegradable plastics. The article summarized the types, properties, advantages and disadvantages, and main applications of common biodegradable plastics. The degradation mechanisms, functional microbial strains and enzymes, as well as the degradation degree and duration under different environmental conditions, were also summarized. This review may help better understand the degradation of biodegradable plastics wastes.

Abstract:Demands of plastic material which increase with the increasing of human population encourage researchers to find alternative solution to replace petro based plastic. Thus, in the present study, a novel “green bioplastic” packaging was developed using soybean waste which is a major waste in soy sauce food industry. The evaluation of the effect of ratio of starch, soy waste and plasticizer in this bioplastic production was studied and their characteristics were compared with available bioplastics. Characteristics study was done in terms of burning test, water absorption capacity, thermal and tensile strength measurement and the result obtained were analyzed. The glass transition temperature (Tg) for soy waste bioplastic is 117˚C. The water absorption test shows that an increase in mass up to 114.17% which show large amount of water uptake capacity of this bioplastics. And about 38% of percentage loss was observed when compared with other novel bioplastics. The results clearly show that the amount of glycerol as a plasticizer had an inversely proportional relationship with the Glass Transition Temperature (Tg). The average maximum force value for tensile strength test is 6.71 N. The burning test show that the soy wastes bioplastic release a very faint smell of soy and glue-like substance. The flame ignited a Yellowish-Orange colour and released some sparks. Based on the overall results, soy-based have been proven to become an excellent bio-based packaging materials.
