Abstract:In recent years, more and more gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with late rebrightenings in their multi-band afterglows have revealed the late-time activity of their central engines. GRB 100814A is a special case among the well-sampled events, with complex temporal and spectral evolution. The single power-law shallow decay index of the optical light curve observed by GROND between 640 s and 10 ks is alpha(opt) = 0.57 +/- 0.02, which apparently conflicts with expectations from the simple external shock model. In particular, there is remarkable rebrightening in the optical to near-infrared bands at late times, challenging the external shock model with synchrotron emission coming from the interaction of the blast wave with the surrounding interstellar medium. In this paper, we invoke a magnetar with spin evolution to explain the complex multi-band afterglow emission of GRB 100814A. The initial shallow decay phase in the optical bands and the plateau in the X-ray can be explained as being due to energy injection from a spin-down magnetar. At late times, with materials from the fall-back disk falling onto the central object of the burster, the angular momentum of the accreted materials is transferred to the magnetar, which leads to a spin up process. As a result, the magnetic dipole radiation luminosity will increase, resulting in significant rebrightening of the optical afterglow. We show that the model can well reproduce the observed multi-band afterglow emission.
Signature of Triaxially Precessing Magnetars in Gamma-ray Burst X-Ray Afterglows

Abstract:The X-ray afterglows of some gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) exhibit plateaus, which can be explained by the internal dissipation of a newborn millisecond magnetar wind. In the early phase of these newborn magnetars, the magnetic inclination angle undergoes periodic changes due to precession, leading to periodic modulation of the injection luminosity due to magnetic dipole radiation. This may result in quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) on the plateaus. In this paper, we identify four GRBs with regular flux variations on their X-ray afterglow plateaus from Swift/XRT data before November 2023, three of which exhibit periodicity. Based on the likelihood of supporting a precessing magnetar as the central engine, we classify them into three categories: Gold (GRB 060202 and GRB 180620A), Silver (GRB 050730), and Bronze (GRB 210610A). We invoke a model of magnetic dipole radiation emitted by a triaxially freely precessing magnetar whose spin-down is dominated by electromagnetic radiation, to fit the light curves. Our model successfully reproduces the light curves of these four GRBs, including the regular flux variations on the plateaus and their periodicity (if present). Our work provides further evidence for early precession in newborn millisecond magnetars in GRBs.
The Effects of a Magnetar Engine on the Gamma-Ray Burst-associated Supernovae: Application to Double-peaked SN 2006aj

Abstract:A millisecond magnetar engine has been widely suggested to exist in gamma-ray burst (GRB) phenomena, in view of its substantial influences on the GRB afterglow emission. In this paper, we investigate the effects of the magnetar engine on the supernova (SN) emission, which is associated with long GRBs and, specifically, confront the model with the observational data of SN 2006aj/GRB 060218. SN 2006aj is featured by its remarkable double-peaked ultraviolet-optical (UV-opt) light curves. By fitting these light curves, we demonstrate that the first peak can be well accounted for by the breakout emission of the shock driven by the magnetar wind, while the primary supernova emission is also partly powered by the energy injection from the magnetar. The magnetic field strength of the magnetar is constrained to be ∼10 15 G, which is in good agreement with the common results inferred from the afterglow emission of long GRBs. In more detail, it is further suggested that the UV excess in the late emission of the supernova could also be due to the leakage of the nonthermal emission of the pulsar wind nebula, if some ad hoc conditions can be satisfied. The consistency between the model and the SN 2006aj observation indicates that the magnetar engine is likely to be ubiquitous in the GRB phenomena and even further intensify their connection with the phenomena of superluminous supernovae.

X-Ray Afterglow Plateaus of Long Gamma-Ray Bursts: Further Evidence for Millisecond Magnetars

Abstract:Many long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) were observed by Swift/XRT to have plateaus in their X-ray afterglow light curves. This plateau phase has been argued to be evidence for long-lasting activity of magnetar (ultra-strongly magnetized neutron stars) central engines. However, the emission efficiency of such magnetars in X-rays is still unknown. Here we collect 24 long GRB X-ray afterglows showing plateaus followed by steep decays. We extend the well-known relationship between the X-ray luminosity L_X and spin-down luminosity L_sd of pulsars to magnetar central engines, and find that the initial rotation period P_0 ranges from 1 ms to 10 ms and that the dipole magnetic field B is centered around 10^15 G. These constraints not only favor the suggestion that the central engines of some long GRBs are very likely to be rapidly rotating magnetars but also indicate that the magnetar plateau emission efficiency in X-rays is close to 100

Abstract:Millisecond pulsars with strong magnetic fields may be formed through several processes, e.g. accretion-induced collapse of magnetized white dwarfs, merger of two neutron stars, and accretion-induced phase transitions of neutron stars. During the birth of such a pulsar, an initial fireball available for a gamma-ray burst (GRB) may occur. We here study evolution of a postburst relativistic fireball with energy injection from the pulsar through magnetic dipole radiation, and find that the magnitude of the optical afterglow from this fireball first decreases with time, subsequently flattens, and finally declines again. This may provide a natural explanation for the behavior of the lightcurve of the afterglow of GRB970228 if this burst resulted from the birth of a strongly magnetic millisecond pulsar.
Spin Evolution Of Millisecond Magnetars With Hyperaccreting Fallback Disks: Implications For Early Afterglows Of Gamma-Ray Bursts

Abstract:The shallow decay phase or plateau phase of early afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), discovered by Swift, is currently understood as being due to energy injection to a relativistic blast wave. One natural scenario for energy injection invokes a millisecond magnetar as the central engine of GRBs because the conventional model of a pulsar predicts a nearly constant magnetic-dipole-radiation luminosity within the spin-down timescale. However, we note that significant brightening occurs in some early afterglows, which apparently conflicts with the above scenario. Here we propose a new model to explain this significant brightening phenomena by considering a hyperaccreting fallback disk around a newborn millisecond magnetar. We show that for typical values of the model parameters, sufficient angular momentum of the accreted matter is transferred to the magnetar and spins it up. It is this spin-up that leads to a dramatic increase of the magnetic-dipole-radiation luminosity with time and thus significant brightening of an early afterglow. Based on this model, we carry out numerical calculations and fit well early afterglows of 12 GRBs assuming sufficiently strong fallback accretion. If the accretion is very weak, our model turns out to be the conventional energy-injection scenario of a pulsar. Therefore, our model can provide a unified explanation for the shallow decay phase, plateaus, and significant brightening of early afterglows.
A Test of the Millisecond Magnetar Central Engine Model of Gamma-Ray Bursts with Swift Data

Magnetar winds in short GRBs, on the other hand, are consistent with being isotropic. No GRB in the magnetar sample has a beam-corrected total energy exceeding the maximum energy budget defined by the initial spin energy of the magnetar, while some non-magnetar GRBs do violate such a limit. With beaming correction, on average the non-magnetar sample is more energetic and luminous than the magnetar samples. Our analysis hints that millisecond magnetars are likely operating in a good fraction, but probably not all, GRBs.

Abstract:Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), both long and short, are explosive events whose inner engine is generally expected to be a black hole or a highly magnetic neutron star (magnetar) accreting high density matter. Recognizing the nature of GRB central engines, and in particular the formation of neutron stars (NSs), is of high astrophysical significance. A possible signature of NSs in GRBs is the presence of a plateau in the early X-ray afterglow. Here we carefully select a subset of long and short GRBs with a clear plateau, and look for an additional NS signature in their prompt emission, namely a transition between accretion and propeller in analogy with accreting, magnetic compact objects in other astrophysical sources. We estimate from the prompt emission the minimum accretion luminosity below which the propeller mechanism sets in, and the NS magnetic field and spin period from the plateau. We demonstrate that these three quantities obey the same universal relation in GRBs as in other accreting compact objects switching from accretion to propeller. This relation provides also an estimate of the radiative efficiency of GRBs, which we find to be several times lower than radiatively efficient accretion in X-ray binaries and in agreement with theoretical expectations. These results provide additional support to the idea that at least some GRBs are powered by magnetars surrounded by an accretion disc.

Bright Broad-Band Afterglows of Gravitational Wave Bursts from Binary Neutron Star Mergers As a Probe of Millisecond Magnetars

Abstract:If double neutron star mergers leave behind a massive magnetar rather than a black hole, a bright early afterglow can follow the gravitational wave burst (GWB) even if there is no short gamma-ray burst (SGRB) - GWB association or there is an association but the SGRB does not beam towards earth. Besides directly dissipating the proto-magnetar wind as suggested by Zhang, we here suggest that the magnetar wind could push the ejecta launched during the merger process, and under certain conditions, would reach a relativistic speed. Such a magnetar-powered ejecta, when interacting with the ambient medium, would develop a bright broad-band afterglow due to synchrotron radiation. We study this physical scenario in detail, and present the predicted X-ray, optical and radio light curves for a range of magnetar and ejecta parameters. We show that the X-ray and optical lightcurves usually peak around the magnetar spindown time scale (10^3-10^5s), reaching brightness readily detectable by wide-field X-ray and optical telescopes, and remain detectable for an extended period. The radio afterglow peaks later, but is much brighter than the case without a magnetar energy injection. Therefore, such bright broad-band afterglows, if detected and combined with GWBs in the future, would be a probe of massive millisecond magnetars and stiff equation-of-state for nuclear matter.
The Millisecond Magnetar Central Engine in short GRBs

Abstract:One favored progenitor model for short duration gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) is the coalescence of two neutron stars (NS-NS). One possible outcome of such a merger would be a rapidly spinning, strongly magnetized neutron star (known as a millisecond magnetar). These magnetars may be "supra-massive", implying they would collapse to black holes after losing centrifugal support due to magnetic dipole spindown. By systematically analyzing the BAT-XRT light curves of all short GRBs detected by {\em swift}, we test how well the data are consistent with this central engine model of short GRBs. We find that the so-called "extended emission" observed with BAT in some short GRBs are fundamentally the same component as the "internal X-ray plateau" as observed in many short GRBs, which is defined as a plateau in the lightcurve followed by a very rapid drop. Based on how likely a short GRB hosts a magnetar, we characterize the entire {\em Swift} short GRB sample into three categories: the "internal plateau" sample, the "external plateau" sample, and the "no plateau" sample. The derived magnetar surface magnetic field $B_{\rm p}$ and the initial spin period $P_0$ fall into the reasonable range. No GRBs in the internal plateau sample have the total energy exceeding the maximum energy budget of a millisecond magnetar. Assuming that the rapid fall time at the end of the internal plateau is the collapse time of a supra-massive magnetar to a black hole, and applying the measured mass distribution of NS-NS systems in our Galaxy, we constrain the neutron star equation of state (EOS). The data suggest that the NS equation of state is close to the GM1 model, which has a maximum non-rotating NS mass $M_{\rm TOV} \sim 2.37 M_\odot$.

Early Optical Observations of GRB 150910A: Bright Jet Optical Afterglow and X-ray Dipole Radiation from a Magnetar Central Engine

Abstract:Gamma-ray burst (GRB) 150910A was detected by {\it Swift}/BAT, and then rapidly observed by {\it Swift}/XRT, {\it Swift}/UVOT, and ground-based telescopes. We report Lick Observatory spectroscopic and photometric observations of GRB~150910A, and we investigate the physical origins of both the optical and X-ray afterglows, incorporating data obtained with BAT and XRT. The light curves show that the jet emission episode lasts $\sim 360$~s with a sharp pulse from BAT to XRT (Episode I). In Episode II, the optical emission has a smooth onset bump followed by a normal decay ($\alpha_{\rm R,2} \approx -1.36$), as predicted in the standard external shock model, while the X-ray emission exhibits a plateau ($\alpha_{\rm X,1} \approx -0.36$) followed by a steep decay ($\alpha_{\rm X,2} \approx -2.12$). The light curves show obvious chromatic behavior with an excess in the X-ray flux. Our results suggest that GRB 150910A is an unusual GRB driven by a newly-born magnetar with its extremely energetic magnetic dipole (MD) wind in Episode II, which overwhelmingly dominates the observed early X-ray plateau. The radiative efficiency of the jet prompt emission is $\eta_{\gamma} \approx 11\%$. The MD wind emission was detected in both the BAT and XRT bands, making it the brightest among the current sample of MD winds seen by XRT. We infer the initial spin period ($P_0$) and the surface polar cap magnetic field strength ($B_p$) of the magnetar as $1.02 \times 10^{15}~{\rm G} \leq B_{p} \leq 1.80 \times 10^{15}~{\rm G}$ and 1~ms $\leq P_{0}v\leq 1.77$~ms, and the radiative efficiency of the wind is $\eta_w \geq 32\%$.

The Termination Shock of a Magnetar Wind: a Possible Origin of Gamma-Ray Burst X-ray Afterglow Emission

Abstract:Context: Swift observations suggest that the X-ray afterglow emission of some gamma-ray bursts (GRB) may have internal origins, and the conventional external shock (ES) cannot be the exclusive source of the afterglow emission. Aims: If the central compact objects of some GRBs are millisecond magentars, the magnetar winds could play an important role in the (internal) X-ray afterglow emission, which is our focus here. Methods: The dynamics and the synchrotron radiation of the termination shock (TS) of the magmnetar winds, as well as the simultaneous GRB ES, are investigated by considering the magnetization of the winds. Results: As a result of the competition between the emission of the wind TS and the GRB ES, two basic types of X-ray afterglows are predicted, i.e., the TS-dominated and the ES-dominated types. Moreover, our results also show that both of the two types of afterglows have a shallow-decay phase and a normal-decay one, as observed by the \textit{Swift} satellite. This indicates that some observed X-ray afterglows could be (internally) produced by the magnetar winds, but not necessarily GRB ESs.

Abstract:(Abridged) We discuss a Gamma-ray burst (GRB) fireball with an additional energy injection, either in the form of a Poynting-flux-dominated outflow or a kinetic-energy-dominated matter shell injected after the burst. A total injection energy comparable to that of the impulsive energy in the initial fireball is required to make a detectable signature in the afterglow lightcurves. For the case of a Poynting-flux-dominated injection, this leads to a gradual achromatic bump feature. For the case when the injection is kinetic-energy-dominated, the collision between the rear (injected) and the forward shell mild if the relative velocity between the colliding shells does not exceed a critical value defined by their energy ratio. Otherwise, the injection is violent, and an additional pair of shocks will form at the discontinuity between two colliding shells, so that there are altogether three shock-heated regions from which the emission contributes to the final lightcurves. We describe the shell-merging process in detail and present broadband lightcurves with the injection signatures. A violent collision results in very complicated features, which differs from the gradual bump signature found in the Poynting-flux or mild matter injection cases. In all the cases, the energetics of the fireball as well as the absolute afterglow flux level after the injection are boosted after the injection. Identifying the different injection signatures from future early afterglow observations may provide diagnostics about the nature of the fireball and of the central engine.
Effects of Fall-Back Accretion on Proto-Magnetar Outflows in Gamma-Ray Bursts and Superluminous Supernovae

Abstract:Rapidly spinning, strongly magnetized proto-neutron stars ("millisecond proto-magnetars") are candidate central engines of long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRB), superluminous supernovae (SLSNe), and binary neutron star mergers. Magnetar birth may be accompanied by the fall-back of stellar debris, lasting for seconds or longer following the explosion. Accretion alters the magnetar evolution by (1) providing an additional source of rotational energy (or a potential sink, if the propeller mechanism operates); (2) enhancing the spin-down luminosity above the dipole rate by compressing the magnetosphere and expanding the polar cap region of open magnetic field lines; (3) supplying an additional accretion-powered neutrino luminosity that sustains the wind baryon-loading, even after the magnetar's internal neutrino luminosity has subsided. The more complex evolution of the jet power and magnetization of an accreting magnetar more readily accounts for the high 56Ni yields GRB SNe and irregular time evolution of some GRB light curves (e.g.~bursts with precursors followed by a long quiescent interval before the main emission episode). Additional baryon-loading from accretion-powered neutrino irradiation of the magnetar polar cap lengthens the timeframe over which the jet magnetization is in the requisite range sigma ~< 1e3 for efficient gamma-ray emission, thereby accommodating GRBs with ultra-long durations. Though accretion does not significantly raise the maximum energy budget from the limit of <~ few 1e52 ergs for an isolated magnetar, it greatly expands the range of magnetic field strengths and birth spin periods capable of powering GRB jets, reducing the differences between the magnetar properties normally invoked to explain GRBs versus SLSNe.

Imprints of Electron–positron Winds on the Multiwavelength Afterglows of Gamma-ray Bursts

Abstract:Optical rebrightenings in the afterglows of some gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are unexpected within the framework of the simple external shock model. While it has been suggested that the central engines of some GRBs are newly born magnetars, we aim to relate the behaviors of magnetars to the optical rebrightenings. A newly born magnetar will lose its rotational energy in the form of Poynting-flux, which may be converted into a wind of electron-positron pairs through some magnetic dissipation processes. As proposed by Dai, this wind will catch up with the GRB outflow and a long-lasting reverse shock (RS) would form. By applying this scenario to GRB afterglows, we find that the RS propagating back into the electron-positron wind can lead to an observable optical rebrightening and a simultaneous X-ray plateau (or X-ray shallow decay). In our study, we select four GRBs (i.e., GRB 080413B, GRB 090426, GRB 091029, and GRB 100814A), of which the optical afterglows are well observed and show clear rebrightenings. We find that they can be well interpreted. In our scenario, the spin-down timescale of the magnetar should be slightly smaller than the peak time of the rebrightening, which can provide a clue to the characteristics of the magnetar.
A SUPRAMASSIVE MAGNETAR CENTRAL ENGINE FOR GRB 130603B

Abstract:We show that the peculiar early optical emission and, in particular, the X-ray after glow emission of the short-duration burst GRB 130603B can be explained by continuous energy injection into the blastwave from a supramassive magnetar central engine. The observed energetics and temporal/spectral properties of the late infrared bump (i.e., the "kilonova") are also found to be consistent with emission from the ejecta launched during a neutron star (NS)-NS merger and powered by a magnetar central engine. The isotropic-equivalent kinetic energies of both the gamma-ray burst (GRB) blastwave and the kilonova are approximately E-k similar to 10(51) erg, consistent with being powered by a near-isotropic magnetar wind. However, this relatively small value requires that most of the initial rotational energy of the magnetar (similar to a few x 10(52) erg) is carried away by gravitational wave radiation. Our results suggest that (1) the progenitor of GRB 130603B was a NS-NS binary system, the merger product of which would have been a supramassive NS that lasted for about similar to 1000 s; (2) the equation of state of the nuclear matter should be stiff enough to allow the survival of a long-lived supramassive NS; thus this suggested that the detection of the bright electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave triggers without short GRB associations is promising in the upcoming Advanced LIGO/VIRGO era.
Long-term Continuous Energy Injection in the Afterglow of GRB 060729

Abstract:A long plateau phase and an amazing level of brightness have been observed in the X-ray afterglow of GRB 060729. This peculiar light curve is likely due to long-term energy injection in external shock. Here, we present a detailed numerical study of the energy injection process of magnetic dipole radiation from a strongly magnetized millisecond pulsar and model the multi-band afterglow observations. It is found that this model can successfully explain the long plateaus in the observed X-ray and optical afterglow light curves. The sharp break following the plateaus could be due to the rapid decline of the emission power of the central pulsar. At an even later time (similar to 5 x 10(6) s), an obvious jet break appears, which implies a relatively large half opening angle of theta similar to 0.3 for the GRB ejecta. Due to the energy injection, the Lorentz factor of the outflow is still larger than two even at 10(7) s after the GRB trigger, making the X-ray afterglow of this burst detectable by Chandra even 642 d after the burst.

Abstract:If double neutron star mergers leave behind a massive magnetar rather than a black hole, then a bright early afterglow can follow the gravitational wave burst (GWB) even if there is no short gamma-ray burst (SGRB)-GWB association or if there is an association but the SGRB does not beam toward Earth. Besides directly dissipating the proto-magnetar wind, as suggested by Zhang, here we suggest that the magnetar wind could push the ejecta launched during the merger process and, under certain conditions, would reach a relativistic speed. Such a magnetar-powered ejecta, when interacting with the ambient medium, would develop a bright broadband afterglow due to synchrotron radiation. We study this physical scenario in detail and present the predicted X-ray, optical, and radio light curves for a range of magnetar and ejecta parameters. We show that the X-ray and optical light curves usually peak around the magnetar spin-down timescale (similar to 10(3)-10(5) s), reaching brightnesses readily detectable by wide-field X-ray and optical telescopes, and remain detectable for an extended period. The radio afterglow peaks later, but is much brighter than the case without a magnetar energy injection. Therefore, such bright broadband afterglows, if detected and combined with GWBs in the future, would be a probe of massive millisecond magnetars and stiff equations of state for nuclear matter.
The X-ray re-brightening of GRB afterglow revisited: a possible signature from activity of the central engine

Abstract:Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are thought to be from core collapse of massive stars, and a rapidly spinning magnetar or black hole may be formed as the central engine. The extended emission in the prompt emission, flares and plateaus in X-ray afterglow, are proposed to be as the signature of central engine re-activity. However, the directly evidence from observations of identifying the central engines remain an open question. In this paper, we systemically search for long-duration GRBs that consist of bumps in X-ray afterglow detected by Swift/XRT, and find that the peak time of the X-ray bumps exhibit bimodal distribution (defined as early and late bumps) with division line at $t=7190$ s. Although we cannot rule out that such a bimodality arises from selection effects. We proposed that the long-duration GRBs with an early (or late) bumps may be originated from the fall-back accretion onto a new-born magnetar (or black hole). By adopting MCMC method to fit the early (or late) bumps of X-ray afterglow with the fall-back accretion of magnetar (or black hole), it is found that the initial surface magnetic filed and period of magnetars for most early bumps are clustered around $5.88\times10^{13}$ G and $1.04$ ms, respectively. Meanwhile, the derived accretion mass of black hole for late bumps is range of $[4\times10^{-4}, 1.8\times10^{-2}]~M_{\odot}$, and the typical fall-back radius is distributed range of $[1.04, 4.23]\times 10^{11}$ cm which is consistent with the typical radius of a Wolf-Rayet star. However, we also find that the fall-back accretion magnetar model is disfavored by the late bumps, but the fall-back accretion of black hole model can not be ruled out to interpret the early bumps of X-ray afterglow.
