Abstract:The seventh generation primary-amine-ended poly(amido-amine)(PAMAM G7-NH_2) dendrimer was synthesized and employed to investigate the templatation and stabilization effect in the formation of copper nanoparticles.Ultra-violet spectra and transmission electron microscope(TEM) were adopted to characterize the absorption properties of Cu~(2+)/G7-NH_2 complexes (G7-NH_2(Cu~(2+))_n) and the morphologies of the formed Cu/G7-NH_2 particles(G7-NH_2(Cu)_n).It was found that the copper nanoparticles could be formed through the G7-NH_2 exterior template process.The size and the aggregation of G7-NH_2(Cu)_n nanoparticles increased with the increasing of the molar ratio of [Cu~(2+)]/ [G7-NH_2].The resultant solutions of G7-NH_2(Cu)_n in water can still stay in stability though the copper nanoparticles form into aggregates.If oxygen existed,the formed copper particles could be oxidized back to G7-NH_2(Cu~(2+))_n easily.

Abstract:An in situ repetitive divergent polymerization strategy was employed to grow multi-amine poly(amidoamine) dendritic macromolecules on the surfaces of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs), affording novel three-dimensional (3D) molecular nanocomposites. The crude MWNTs were oxidized using H2SO4/HNO3 = 3:1 (v/v) and then reacted with thionyl chloride, resulting in MWNTs functionalized with chlorocarbonyl groups (MWNT-COCl). MWNT-COCl, when reacted with an excess of ethylenediamine, produced amine-functionalized MWNT supported initiators (MWNT-NH2). Using the MWNT-NH2 as the growth supporter and methylacrylate/ethylenediamine as building blocks, multi-amine dendritic poly(amidoamine) macromolecules were covalently grafted onto the sidewalls and ends of MWNTs via Michael addition reaction and amidation. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) measurements showed that the weight ratio of the as-grown dendritic polymers on the MWNT surfaces lay in the 10%–50% range. The products were also characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Raman, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. The results indicate that the dendrimers are grafted onto the surface of MWNTs. The as-prepared nanocomposites exhibit excellent dispersibility in water.

Abstract:Poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers were grafted onto the surface of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by in situ polymerization. Basic chemical composition was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), along with the resulting Raman spectroscopy. Experimental results indicated that PAMAM dendrimer was successfully grown on the CNTs surface through the chemical reaction, which could introduce many reactive peripheral amine groups onto the CNTs surface. Abstract:The preparation of multi-metallic Au nanocluster and nanowires has been achieved using terpyridine-based metallo-organic polymers as multi-ionic templates through a straightforward counterion exchange with aqueous NaAuCl4 followed by a mild reduction in-situ with sodium citrate. The mild reduction of the [TpyFeTpy]2+ x 2[AuCl4]- complex, derived from [TpyFeTpy]2+ x 2Cl- 1 (tpy = 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine), led to the formation of Au nanoclusters (Au NC) with diameters ranging from 7.5-88 nm. Each Au NC alone contained multiple nanoparticles, with diameters ranging from 2.5-4.5 nm. 1,4-bis-terpyridine based metallo-oraganic polymer [-TpyFeTpy-TpyFeTpy-]n(2n+) x [Cl]2n- 2 was found to generate a multi-ionic metallo-polymer with AuCl4- as the counterion, after mild reduction with sodium citrate, resulting in irregular zigzag shaped Au nanowires (Au NW). The prepared Au NW from the di-metallic complex 3 should find applications within electronic devices. Both Au NC and NW were also found to possess excellent catalytic properties.
Multihydroxy Polymer-Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes: Synthesis, Derivatization, and Metal Loading

Abstract:Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were oxidized with concentrated HNO3 and HzSO(4) to introduce carboxylic groups onto MWNT surfaces. The oxidized MWNTs were reacted subsequently with thionyl chloride, glycol, and 2-bromo-2-methylpropionyl bromide, producing MWNT-based macro-initiators, MWNT-Br, for the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of glycerol monomethacrylate (GMA). In the presence of N,N,N',N",N"-pentmethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA)/Cu(I)Br, hydroxyl-functional polyGMA, with weight concentration of ca. 50-90%, was successfully grown from the MWNT surface. Comparative experiments, with MWNT-Br and ethyl 2-bromoisobutyrate as co-initiators, showed that (1) the presence of free initiator has no significant effect on the nanotube-surface initiating polymerizations, (2) both the polymer content grafted on the nanotubes (46-88 wt %) and the number-average molecular weight (Mn) of free polymer (3000-17 000) can be efficiently controlled by adjusting the feed ratio of monomer to co-initiators, and (3) the polydispersity index (PDI) of the free polymer increased when either the feed ratio or the molecular weight was increased. Further derivatization of the grafted polyGMA with succinic anhydride converted the hydroxyl groups into carboxylic acid groups. The resulting polymer-functionalized MWNTs were characterized with FTIR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, TGA, SEM, and TEM. Furthermore, the poly(carboxylic acid)-modified MWNTs were used to sequester metal ions such as Ag+, Co2+, Ni2+, Au3+, La3+, and Y3+, forming MWNT-polymer/metal hybrid nanocomposites, nanowires, or necklace-like nanostructures, depending on the grafted polymer content and the nature of the captured metal. SEM and TEM studies combined with X-ray analyses confirmed the structure and elements of the novel hybrid nanoobjects. Interestingly, polymer enwrapped-silver nanobeads or nanodots with a diameter of ca. 3-10 nm decorating the convex surface of MWNTs were obtained. The synthesis, derivatization, and metal loading of functionalized MWNTs suggests a new route for rational molecular design and augurs well for future applications of functionalized nanomaterials, including device fabrication.

Abstract:Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) functionalized with poly(dopamine) (PDA) were found to cause the immobilization of silver nanoparticles on the surface. The PDA functional layer not only improved the dispersion of MWNTs in aqueous solution, but also was used as a platform for subsequent silver nanoparticle immobilization. The surface morphology of the functionalized MWNTs was observed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that PDA layers with controlled thickness on the nanometer scale were formed on MWNT surfaces by in situ spontaneous oxidative polymerization of dopamine, and that high-density of homogeneously dispersed spherical silver nanoparticles with sizes of 3–4 nm were immobilized on their outer surface. The space between spherical silver nanoparticles is less than 10 nm. Both X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction results showed that the Ag nanoparticles on the surface of hybrids exist in the zero valent state.

Abstract:In this work, a novel strategy for surface modification of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was developed via combination of mussel inspired chemistry and chain transfer free radical polymerization. First, pristine CNTs were functionalized with polydopamine (PDA), which is formed via self-polymerization of dopamine in alkaline conditions. These PDA functionalized CNTs can be further reacted with amino-terminated polymers (named as PDMC), which was synthesized through chain transfer free radical polymerization using cysteamine hydrochloride as chain transfer agent and methacryloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride as the monomer. PDMC perfectly conjugated with CNT-PDA was ascertained by a series of characterization techniques including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The dispersibility of obtained CNT nanocomposites (named as CNT-PDA-PDMC) was further examined. Results showed that the dispersibility of CNT-PDA-PDMC in aqueous and organic solutions was obviously enhanced. Apart from PDMC, many other amino-terminated polymers can also be used to functionalization of CNTs via similar strategy. Preparation of amine-modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes and their use in composites

Abstract:Multiwalled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs) were modified by a graft reaction of diamines with different chain lengths,such as ethylenediamine(EDA),hexamethylene diamine(HMDA) and decamethylene diamine(DMDA).FTIR,Raman spectroscopy,XPS and TEM were used to characterize their chemical structure.XPS indicated that the molar content of N on the surface of MWCNTs-EDA,MWCNTs-HMDA and MWCNTs-DMDA reached 3.52%,4.18% and 2.88% respectively under the same reaction conditions.The dispersion of MWCNTs in organic solvents before and after the modification was measured semi-quantitatively using UV-Vis spectra and a Turbiscan analyzer.It was found that the amino-modified MWCNTs improved their dispersion in polar solvents and MWCNTs-HMDA had the best dispersion stability.MWCNTs-HMDA were introduced into a traditional carbon fiber reinforced epoxy system to prepare three phase composites which showed remarkably improved flexural and impact strengths.
Surface engineering of halloysite with PAMAM dendrimer via divergent and convergent synthetic routes: Quantitative and qualitative analysis

Abstract:Functionalization of halloysite nanotubes (HNT) with amine-terminated dendritic groups can modify the surface chemistry and physical properties, thereby optimizing their functionality for expanded potential applications, making them a valuable resource for various industries. In this study, hybrid HNT were successfully prepared using amine-terminated dendritic polymers via convergent and divergent synthetic routes. The functionalized HNT with γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) serves as a core (HNT-APTES) to grow dendritic structures in both routes. In the divergent route, the three generations of polyamidoamine dendrimers (PAMAM) were grown in a multistep process initiated by the Michael addition of methyl acrylate to the HNT-APTES, followed by amidation of the ester groups with ethylenediamine. In the convergent route, the HNT-APTES were functionalized with dicarboxylic acid as a linker between HNT and PAMAM dendrimer (HNT-COOH), then the second generation of PAMAM reacted onto HNT-COOH. The efficiency of synthesis in both methods was investigated by quantitative and qualitative analysis using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and ζ-potential analysis. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterize the physicochemical properties of the developed samples. The results confirmed the chemical interactions between HNT and dendritic polymers, which led to an increased surface charge. The growth of the dendrimer structure in each generation was examined on the outer and inner surfaces of HNT for both methods. The results reveal the possibility of growing dendritic structures into the lumen of HNT in lower generation in divergent synthetic routes while the dendritic structures only grow onto the outer surface of HNT due to lower steric hindrance. Furthermore, Acid Red 1 (AR1) was utilized as an anionic model dye for adsorption characteristics. The results confirm the higher efficiency of convergent synthesis routes compared to divergent ones in the same generation. These routes facilitated the modification of the outer surface of nanoclay for adsorption applications such as pollutants, drugs, and dyes.

Abstract:A novel procedure was demonstrated for the preparation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) decorated with silver nanoparticles through poly(dopamine) (PDA) surface functionalization and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The CNT surfaces were first functionalized by a bio-inspired PDA layer. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results showed that PDA layer with thicknesses in nanometers were formed on the outer surfaces of the CNTs. With the immersion of the PDA-coated CNTs (CNTs-PDA) into a silver plating bath, the silver ions attached to the CNTs-PDA surfaces were reduced in situ to silver nanoparticles by using the N-containing groups and reducing ability of PDA. The dense silver nanoparticles were further decorated on the CNTs-PDA surfaces under UV irradiation. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images showed that the spherical silver nanoparticles were about 3–4 nm in diameter and uniformly distributed on the outer surfaces of the CNTs. The distance between the nanoparticles was less than 10 nm. The as-prepared silver-decorated CNTs-PDA nanocomposites had excellent electrical conductivity, with a surface conductivity of up to 340 S/cm.

Abstract:Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were modified by grafting with hexamethylene diamine to obtain reactive amine groups. Acid treatment was used to shorten the MWCNTs by cutting at defect sites. Carboxyl groups produced by the acid treatment were converted to carbonyl chloride by thionyl chloride,and hexa￣methylene diamine was grafted to the ends of the cut MWCNTs by its substitutional reaction with carbonyl chloride. XPS,TEM and SEM were used to characterize the samples during the course of modification. Results indicated that MWCNTs were shortened from tens of microns to about 500 nm by the acid treatment. Hexamethylene diamine was successfully grafted onto the ends of the MWCNTs with a grafted N content as high as 3.29 mol%. The grafted MWCNTs can be dispersed uniformly in acetone.
A Simple Template Method for Hierarchical Dendrites of Silver Nanorods and Their Applications in Catalysis

Abstract:A novel strategy has been put forward to prepare hierarchical dendrites of silver nanorods via a simple integration method using “Devarda's template” as a reducing agent and architecture template with the assistance of ultrasonic waves, in which the template was firstly fabricated and employed. The individual silver dendrite is composed of a long central trunk with secondary branches, which preferentially grew in a parallel direction with a definite angle to the trunk. The results reveal that the dendrites are single crystalline in nature and interestingly prove that the silver single crystal has the preferential orientation in 〈111〉 direction in normal conditions. The contrast experiments demonstrated that both “Devarda's template” and the ultrasonic irradiation are necessary for building hierarchically silver dendrites in a water system. Moreover, the experimental results show that the dendrites of silver nanorods are the superior electrode materials for the electrochemical sensors to detect directly NO2− in aqueous solution.

Abstract:Polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers were covalently tethered onto the surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The morphology and dispersive properties of the MWCNT-PAMAM hybrids were characterized and the peripheral functional groups were identified. Cytotoxicity to human osteosarcoma MG-63 cells, and protein and DNA immobilization ability of the hybrids were evaluated in detail. The dendrimers were present on the surface of MWCNTs in high density. The MWCNT-PAMAM hybrids exhibited good dispersibility and stability in aqueous solution. We showed that the hybrids are biocompatible, with no obvious cytotoxicity at concentration <25μgmL−1 over 24h. They possess excellent biomolecule-immobilization ability (bovine serum albumin and 5′-Fam-CAAggTCgTgTAAAggTCAg-3′ were used as models). The functionalization of MWCNTs with PAMAM dendrimers improved the biomolecule-immobilization ability 70-fold and simultaneously decreased the cellular toxicity by about 30%. It is expected that the MWCNT-PAMAM hybrids will find promising applications in biosensors and biomolecule delivery systems in gene or protein therapy.
Mussel Inspired Modification of Carbon Nanotubes Using RAFT Derived Stimuli-Responsive Polymers

Abstract:A novel strategy for surface modification of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) using reversible addition fragmentation transfer (RAFT) derived pH- and thermo-responsive polymers was developed via a combination of mussel inspired chemistry and a Michael addition reaction. In this procedure, pristine MWCNTs were first coated with polydopamine through self polymerization of dopamine under alkine solution, and then RAFT derived stimuli-responsive polymers were further grafted onto PDA modified MWCNTs via a Michael addition reaction. The successful modification of MWCNTs was confirmed by a series of characterization techniques including transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry. These polymer modified CNTs showed enhanced dispersibility in various solutions and pH-/temperature-responsive properties. Due to the strong adhesion of polydopamine to various materials surface, the method described in this work could also be extended to the surface modification of other nanomaterials.

Abstract:Covalently functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were prepared by grafting well-defined thermo-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) via click reactions. First, azide-terminated poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (N-3-PNIPAM) was synthesized by reversible addition fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization, and then the N-3-PNIPAM moiety was connected onto MWNTs by click chemistry. The products were characterized by means of FT-IR, TGA and TEM. The results show that the modification of MWNTs is very successful and MWNTs functionalized by N-3-PNIPAM (MWNTs-PNIPAM) have good solubility and stability in water. TEM images show the functionalized MWNTs are dispersed individually, indicating that the bundles of original MWNTs are separated into individual tubes by surface modification with polymer chains. These MWNTs modified with PNIPAM represent a potential nano-material for preparation of hydrophilic composite materials.

Abstract:Binding of gold nanoparticles (Au-NP) at amine-functionalised multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) is proposed. The MWNTs are functionalised with acylchloride groups, which further react with ethylenediamine to form amine-functionalised MWCNTs. These amines are able to bind preformed colloidal Au-NPs. The Au/MWNT composite material facilitates electron-transfer reactions with free-diffusing redox compounds.

Abstract:Well-dispersed epoxy resin/halloysite nanotubes composites were prepared by functionalization of the HNTs surfaces using polyamidoamine generation-3 (HNTs-G3.0). A series of modified halloysite nanotubes with different generations of dendritic polyamidoamine (PAMAM) were prepared via a divergent synthetic process by repeating the Michael addition of methyl acrylate to superficial amino groups and the amidation of the resulting esters with ethylenediamine. The products were then characterized by means of FTIR, XPS, XRD and TGA. The results showed that PAMAM polymers are successfully grafted on the surface of HNTs and the grafting percentage of HNTs grafted with polyamidoamine generation-3 (HNTs-G3.0) is 27.21 %. The grafted PAMAM has no effect on the crystalline structure of HNTs. The morphology, interfacial interaction and mechanical properties of epoxy composites were investigated and correlated with the surface functionalization of HNTs. The observations of scanning electronic microscopy and transmission electron microscopy images showed that HNTs-G3.0 exhibited better dispersion than the p-HNTs. The interfacial interaction of the epoxy composites was studied by FTIR and DMA. It was found that dendritic polyamidoamine graft can effectively improve the interfacial interaction of the epoxy composites. With the improvement in particle dispersion and interfacial interaction through polyamidoamine generation-3 grafting, an increase of impact strength and fracture toughness was achieved, accompanied by enhancements of flexural strength and modulus. In particular, the impact strength and fracture toughness (K (IC)) of composites with polyamidoamine generation-3 grafted HNTs were about 160 and 20 % higher than the values of functionalization halloysite nanotube system.
Deposition of silver nanoparticles on dendrimer functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes: synthesis, characterization and antimicrobial activity

Abstract:The nanohybrids composed of silver nanoparticles and aromatic polyamide functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) is successfully synthesized and tested for their antibacterial activity against different pathogens. Prior to deposition of silver nanoparticles, acid treated MWCNTs (MWCNTs-COOH) were successively reacted with p-phenylenediamine and methylmethacrylate to form series of NH2-terminated aromatic polyamide dendrimers on the surface of MWCNTs through Michael addition and amidation. Existence of high abundance of amine groups on the surface of functionalized MWCNTs (f-MWCNTs) provided sites for formation of silver nanoparticles by the reduction of aqueous solution of AgNO3. The silver nanoparticles formed in the resulted f-MWCNTs-Ag nanohybrids were determined to be face centered cubic (fcc) symmetry. The structure and nature of f-MWCNTs and f-MWCNTs-Ag nanohybrids were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), powder X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The dispersion state of f-MWCNTs and immobilization of silver nanoparticles on the surface of f-MWCNTs were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Elemental composition of f-MWCNTs-Ag nanohybrids was determined by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The antimicrobial activity of f-MWCNTs-Ag nanohybrids were estimated against E. coli, P. aeruginosa and S. aureu and compared with MWCNTs-COOH and f-MWCNTs. The results indicate that functionalization of MWCNTs with aromatic polyamide dendrimers and successive deposition of Ag nanoparticles could play an important role in the enhancement of antimicrobial activity.
