Abstract:Effect of gamma irradiation on the germination of three weed seeds was studied.Three weed seeds were treated by 50Gy/100Gy/200Gy/400Gy/700Gy and 1000Gy.The results showed that gamma irradiation(<1kGy) could inhibit the germination of three weed seeds,but effect of irradiation on the germination varied with the species.

Abstract:The seeds of different varieties of mat rush were treated by 60 Co γ-rays irradiation of 500,1000,1500 and 2000Gy.The seedlings cultured from treated seeds were used to detect the root activity,seedling growth,chlorophyll content,activities of polyphenol oxidase and catalase,and to investigate the effect of irradiation treatment on the physiological and biochemical properties of mat rush.The results showed that root activity,chlorophyll content and polyphenol oxidase activity of the control group was higher than those of all treatment groups,indicating that irradiation treatment could affect the above physiological and biochemical traits.Meanwhile,it was found that hydrogen peroxide activity of 500Gy treatment was higher than that of CK and other treatment.In addition,with dose increasing,the stem length of seedlings was increased,suggesting that irradiation treatment could promote the seedling growth within some range of dosage.500 Gy was recommended as suitable dosage for irradiation mutagenesis of mat rush.

Abstract:Few researches have been reported on the long-term germination characteristics and the effect of high gamma radiation dose on cereal seeds. In this paper, to observe the effects of gamma irradiation (0–3kGy) on the germination of wheat seed in long-term (within 20 months), wheat seed was dried after irradiation and the germination experiment during storage time was conducted. It was found that the lengths of buds of irradiated wheat seeds diminished, the roots of irradiated wheat seeds disappeared, and no germinations in irradiated wheat seed was found. The influence of γ-ray irradiation on roots was more significant than that on buds. After long-term storage, the germination of irradiated wheat seeds increased.

Abstract:Decontamination of barley seedling powder by 60 Co γ -ray and effect on its nutritional components were studied. Results showed that irradiation was very effective in killing microorganisms in barley seedling powder. The population of microorganisms, such as aerobic bacterial count, moulds and coliform bacteria, decreased with increase of irradiation dose. The D_ 10 values for aerobic bacterial count, moulds and coliform bacteria were 3.18 kGy, 4.55 kGy and 2.32 kGy, respectively. Barley seedling powder, irradiated with 11 kGy, did not have obvious changes in main chemical components, including protein, total polysaccharide, free amino acid, crude fiber, while vitamin E reduced by 38%. It may be concluded that the treatment of irradiation sterilization can increase barley seedling powder quality-guarantee period much longer. The suggested optimal doses are from 7.5 to 11 kGy.

Abstract:After rice seed was irradiated, the embryonal structure (structure of embryo bud and radicle) was affected by gamma-ray. The result revealed that the outline and venations of embryo and radicle were unclear with the increasing dose. These changes of embryonal structure caused by increasing irradiation dose were due to the increasing breakage degree of embryo (including embryo bud and radicle) cells. The influence of gamma-ray irradiation on the structure of radicle was more significant than that of embryo. The results were confirmed by a germination experiment, which showed that the lengths of buds of irradiated rice were diminished, the roots of irradiated rice were found to disappeare, and the germination of irradiated rice was 0%. After long-term storage, the germination rate of irradiated rice seed increased and that of some irradiated samples were found to reach to comparatively high values after different storage time.

Abstract:Rice was irradiated with dose up to 10 kGy after harvest.It is showed from microscopic observation that the embryonal structure of rice(Oryza sativa L.),including structure of embryo bud and radicle,is affected by the γ-ray irradiation;the outline and venations of the irradiated embryo and radicle gradually blur with increasing irradiation dose.These changes are due to the breakage of embryo cells.It can also be seen that the influence of γ-ray irradiation on the structure of radicle is heavier than that on embryo bud.The results of microscopic observation are confirmed by a germination experiment,showing that the lengths of buds of irradiated rice are diminished,the roots of irradiated rice disappear,and the germination rate of irradiated rice is 0 %.The changes of germination of the irradiated rice after storage are shown.After long-term storage,the germination rate of the irradiated rice increases from 0 %,and some irradiated rice samples even give comparatively high values of germination rate within two year's storage.These changes may due to the self-repair of irradiated rice.The effects of store time on germination characteristics of non-irradiated and irradiated rice samples were also studied.

Abstract:ABSTRACTWheat, pretreated by 60Co gamma irradiation, was dried by hot air with irradiation dosage 0–3 kGy, drying temperature 40–60C, and initial moisture contents 19–25% (d.b.). The drying time, average dehydration rate, wet gluten content (WGC), moisture content of wet gluten (MCWG) and titratable acidity (TA) were evaluated based on a quadratic rotation‐orthogonal composite experimental design with three variables (at five levels). The drying time, average dehydration rate, WGC, MCWG and TA were sensitive to irradiation dosage, drying temperature and initial moisture content. Irradiation dosage is the most dominating factor on the quality of wheat flour (WGC, MCWG and TA); drying temperature is the most dominating factor on drying characteristics (drying time and average dehydration rate). Irradiation dosage had a significant effect on drying time, WGC, MCWG, average dehydration rate and TA.PRACTICAL APPLICATIONSGamma irradiation had been employed to decontaminate and to extend the shelf life of food and has been widely used for agricultural products for long‐period storage. The previous studies emphasize particularly on that dried samples were irradiated by gamma irradiation after drying. However, no information has been available on effect of gamma irradiation on drying characteristics and quality of wheat.The results of this study will show irradiation dosage had a significant effect on drying time, average dehydration rate, wet gluten content, moisture content of wet gluten and titratable acidity. This implies that as a pretreatment before drying may be a method to apply for not only increasing the dehydration rate, but also changing the quality of wheat.

Abstract:The effect of gamma irradiation on the quality of transgenic soybean was studied.Soybean was treated by 200Gy,400Gy,600Gy and 1000Gy.The results show that there was significant difference between moisture content of irradiated treatments and the control at 0.05 confidence level,the un-irradiated soybean was lower than irradiated treatments.No remarkable difference was found among the protein,trace elements of irradiated and un-irradiated.Irradiated by 200Gy,400Gy and 600Gy can result in slight changes in fat content of soybean,but it disappeared under 1000Gy irradiation.So it had no significant effect on the quality of transgenic soybean from Canada.

Abstract:Wheat, pretreated by gamma irradiation, was dried by hot-air. Experiments were conduced to study the influence of three factors (different irradiation dosages, air temperatures, and initial moisture contents of wheat) on the drying characteristics and surface temperature of wheat. Conclusions were reached that: the drying characteristics and surface temperature were all affected by irradiation, and the drying rate and the surface temperature of wheat increased with the increase of irradiation dose. Study on the cell structure of wheat grain after irradiated by electron microscope, and it was found that the change of drying characteristics and surface temperature of wheat were due to the destruction of the cell structure made by irradiation. And the hot air temperatures and initial moisture contents of wheat can also affect the drying characteristics of wheat. The effects of dehydration rate and moisture content on surface temperature under different doses of gamma irradiation were analyzed.

Abstract:Nuclear technology is currently used as a tool in mutation breeding to improve crops by increasing genetic variation. The ionization of gamma rays produces large amounts of free radicals, simulating stressors in the natural environment. To avoid gamma-ray-induced oxidative stress, plants use antioxidant defense systems. Exposure of plants to irradiation can affect the germination, growth, and production of metabolites. Plants' sensitivity to irradiation depends on genetic and environmental factors such as moisture content. For this purpose, the effects of different gamma irradiation doses [0, 100, 200, 300, and 400 Gray (Gy)] and different seed moisture contents (7, 13, and 19%) on traits such as seed germination, seedling growth, molecular and biochemical alterations in antioxidant enzymes were examined in the current study. Based on the results, the highest seed germination percentage was observed in the interaction effect of seed moisture at 13% with an irradiation dose of 400 Gy (98.89%). Seedling survival percent and seedling length decreased with increasing doses of gamma irradiation at different seed moisture contents. Increasing gamma irradiation doses were reduced root and stem fresh and dry weight, and root and stem length. The highest level of catalase enzyme activity and expression was observed at 200 and 300 Gy irradiation doses at different moisture contents. The peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase gene expression were reduced at all contents of gamma irradiation doses and seed moisture compared to the control. It can be concluded that the dose of 200–300 Gy of gamma irradiation reduced plant growth by 30% in terms of fresh and dry weight and length of plants, as well as enhanced the expression of antioxidant enzymes. The results of this study could help plant breeders select an appropriate dose rate in wheat for further research.

Abstract:Wheat, pre-treated by gamma-ray irradiation, was air-dried and the influence of irradiation dose, air temperature, and initial moisture content of wheat on drying rate and surface temperature was investigated. Irradiation dose, air temperature, and initial moisture content of wheat affected drying characteristics. Drying rates increased with an increase in dose and temperature. Surface temperature of wheat samples increased with increasing dose at the same drying rate but decreased with increasing dose at the same moisture content. These changes of drying characteristics of irradiated wheat samples were the result of wheat cell structure changes caused by gamma-ray irradiation. It was clear from the microscopic observation that increasing irradiation dose reduced cell-wall thickness or eventually destroyed the cell-wall, causing the cytoplasm to leak from its own cell. Abstract:The seeds of Lagerstroemia indica L.were irradiated by different dose of 60Co-γ ray.The results showed that after irradiation,the germination vigor and vital index and root length of the seeds were significantly inhibited.Irradiation also delayed the seed germination time;At dose of 100 to 500Gy,the seed germination rate hardly effected,only the seeds irradiated by 500Gy were significantly effect.In the range of irradiation doses seedling height,seedling survival rate decreased as the amount of radiation increased.The true leaf emerging time was delayed compared with control.Semi-lethal dose of Lagerstroemia indica L.is 184.94Gy.

Abstract:Three rice genotypes with different color were gamma irradiated at a dose of 2, 4, 6, 8and 10kGy. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of gamma irradiation on the phenolics content and the antioxidant activity, as well as physicochemical properties of whole grain rice. The bound phenolics content in all the genotypes were significantly increased with the increase of dose of irradiation. Gamma irradiation at high dose significantly increased the free, bound and total antioxidant activities of three rice genotypes except for the free antioxidant activities of red rice. Though the color parameters were slightly changed, these changes could not be visibly identified. Rapid visco-analyzer (RVA) viscosities and gel hardness decreased continuously with the increase of the irradiation doses. It is suggested that gamma irradiation enhanced the antioxidant potential and eating quality of whole grainrice.

Abstract:Chicory seeds were irradiated with 60Co-γ-rays at 100,150,200 and 300 Gy to determine germination rate and physiological characteristics from mutagenic effects of irradiation doses.Results showed that seed germination rate decreased as the irradiation dosage increased.There was significant difference between 200 Gy irradiation dosage and control(P0.05).Superoxide dismutase(SOD) activities,peroxidase(POD) activities,soluble protein and soluble sugar contents first increased then declined with a gradual irradiation increase,and differed significantly between control and 150 Gy,100 Gy,150 Gy,150 Gy treatments(P0.05),respectively.MDA content increased with increased irradiation dosage,and there was significant difference between control and the treatments above 150 Gy dose(P0.05).The protein content first increased then declined,and differed significantly between control and treatments(P0.05).It was concluded that the mutagenic effect of chicory irradiated by low dosage(below 150 Gy) was not obvious.However,physiological and biochemical characteristics of chicory irradiated above 200 Gy were significantly altered.The study provides a theoretical basis for chicory radiation mutation breeding.

Abstract:Rice, pre-treated by gamma irradiation, was air-dried at different temperatures and the influence of dose, air temperature, and initial moisture content of rice on the dehydration rate, surface temperature, milling, eating and cooking qualities of the rice was studied. The dehydration rate and the surface temperature of rice increased with the increasing dose. At the same dehydration rate, the surface temperature increased with increasing dose. However, at the same moisture content, the surface temperature decreased with increasing dose. The dose did not affect the milling qualities, but it affected the eating and cooking qualities of rice, such as apparent amylose content (AAC), gel consistency (GC), and gelatinization temperature (GT). Abstract:Wheat(Triticum aestivum L) seeds were irradiated with different doses of 12C6+ ion beams.Several biological endpoints including seeds germination rate,seedling root length and plant height,mitotic activities and survival rate were investigated.The results showed that in all dose range,most irradiated seeds were able to germinate normally.Low doses radiation(10–20 Gy) had a stimulation effect on seedling growth,while high doses radiation played an inhibition role.Especially root growth was strongly related to mitotic index.MI increased in low doses and decreased in high doses,and the mitotic cells were arrested in metaphase and anaphase.The survival curve showed that the parabola trend and the median lethal dose(LD50) was 55 Gy.

Abstract:The objectives of this study were to obtain the effect of gamma irradiation on the quality of dried potato. Experiments were conducted to study the influence of different doses, air temperatures, slice thickness of potatoes on the dehydration rate, appearance quality (L-values), vitamin C content, and the rehydration ratio of dried potatoes. The greater the dose, the higher the dehydration rate, the lesser the vitamin C content, and the lower the rehydration ratio. The L-values for low-dose irradiation was greater than that for non-irradiated potatoes.

Abstract:The effects of gamma irradiation on Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation of were investigated in the current paper, using embryonic calli derived from the mature seeds of Japanese lawngrass(Zoysia japonica Steud.). The result indicated that the GUS transient expression rates were enhanced with the increasing doses when treated by doses lower than 4Gy, however it would be decreased when treated by doses higher than 4Gy. Based on the survival rate and GUS transient expression rate, 2Gy is the optimal dose for Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation. Further observation found that 36 hours reculture after gamma irradiation is the most appropriate for Agrobacterium infection.

Abstract:Pollens from cucumber,towel gourd,and peanut were irradiated with electron beams at doses of 300,400,500,600 and 800 Gy.The irradiated pollens were then cultured in liquid medium.Cucumbers were pollinated with the irradiated pollens.It was found that irradiation at 300 to 500 improved pollen germination rate significantly in cucumber,whereas at 300 to 800 Gy improved pollen germination rate significantly in peanut.Irradiation at 300 to 400 Gy had no effect on pollen germination rate in towel gourd,but at >500 Gy.pollen germination rate was decreased markedly.Mutagenic effect was observed in cucumbers pollinated with pollens irradiated at 600 to 800 Gy;these fruits became podgy,with increased weight,and had poorly matured seeds.These data indicated that electron beam irradiation produced mutagenic action on pollens.

Abstract:Effect of gamma irradiation on the physicochemical properties of flour and starch granule structure of wheat was compared to non-irradiated wheat. The moisture content of wet gluten and titratable acidity of wheat flour were significantly affected by gamma irradiation. This treatment also destroyed the starch granules of wheat grain and their breakage augmented as the dose of gamma irradiation increased, apparently resulting in the increase of small starch granules. Probably, these results were due to the disruption of large molecule, such as proteins, lipids and starch. The irradiated wheat flour for RVA pasting properties (flour viscosity) was also evaluated. Besides the difference in RVA profile, starch pasting curves showed a considerable decrease for six main parameters as gamma irradiation dose at different velocity increased.

Abstract:Pistacia chinensis Bung seeds were irradiated to 100,200,400,600 and 800 Gy by 60Co γ-rays to study the biological effects.The results show that germination rate and survival rate of Pistacia chinensis seed decreased with increasing doses.The dose 200 Gy group has the highest variation rate and germination rate.The height of M1 seedling decreased with increasing doses.Compared with the control,dwarfing,plant type asymmetry,vein chlorosis,leaf curl,malformation and other phenotypic variation appeared with the irradiation groups of 100-400 kGy.Using RAPD,the M1 plants were investigated.Remarkable variations in the experimental plants were detected by RAPD PCR,but no variation was detected in the control plants.And the 200 kGy group has high frequencies of RAPD variation than the 100 kGy group.
