Abstract:Systematically shape-controlled synthesis of inorganic nanocrystals has attracted increasing attention recently for both fundamental and technological interest. The shape evolution of CdSe nanocrystals with wurtzite structure in a unified method has been previously well studied, while the study on shape evolution of CdSe nanocrystals with zinc blende structure still remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate a systematic shape variation of zinc blende CdSe nanocrystals in a modified organometallic approach, in which distinct shapes of cube-shaped, sphere-shaped, tetrahedron-shaped, and branched CdSe nanocrystals with high yield and good uniformity are obtained. The crucial factor that influences the shape-controlled process is the reactive temperature. This wide variation of shapes provides important information about the growth of CdSe nanocrystals, and it can also help in the shape-controlled synthesis of other nanocrystals that are bound with uniform crystal planes.

Abstract:The shape controlled synthesis of high quality colloidal lead selenide (PbSe) nanocrystals (NCs) was achieved through a simple solvothermal process. By using oleic acid (OA) as a ligand and activating agent for the Pb precursor, the evolution of the NCs from nanospheres to nanoflowers and finally to nanocubes was achieved by increasing the reaction time. Further, the shape variation from nanospheres to polyhedrons was readily realized through the increase of OA concentration in the stock solution. More interestingly, the change of the anion ligand was proven to be a facile method to control the structure and size of the nanoflowers. The X-ray diffraction and TEM analysis demonstrated the cubic rock salt structure of the synthesized PbSe NCs. Accompanied by comprehensive analytics, the discussion on the possible mechanisms for the shape evolution was provided.

Abstract:Here we report a low-cost and "green" phosphine-free route for the size- and shape-controlled synthesis of high-quality zinc blende (cubic) ZnSe nanocrystals. To avoid the use of expensive and toxic solvents such as trioctylphosphine (TOP) or tributylphosphine (TBP), SeO(2) was dispersed in 1-octadecene (ODE) as a chalcogen precursor. It has been found that the temperature and the surface ligand influenced the nucleation, the reaction speed and the formation of different shapes. Absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used for the characterization of the as-synthesized ZnSe nanocrystals. The size-dependent photoluminescence (PL) range of the as-prepared ZnSe nanocrystals was between 390 and 450 nm, with the PL full width at half-maximum (FWHM) well controlled between 14 and 18 nm and PL quantum yields reached up to 40% at room temperature. Moreover, this new selenium precursor can be used to form tetrapod-shaped ZnSe nanocrystals when zinc acetylacetonate was introduced as the zinc precursor with a one-pot method.

Abstract:ZnO nanostructures with different morphologies were synthesized by condensing the Zn(OH)(4)(2-) precursors under hydrothermal conditions in the presence of a surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). Shape and size control of ZnO nanostructures was achieved by relatively simple variations of molar ratio of CTAB to Zn(OH)(4)(2-). With a higher molar ratio, ZnO nanotubes were obtained, whereas with a lower molar ratio, ZnO nanorods were formed; furthermore, with a moderate w value, the coexistence of ZnO nanorods and nanotubes was also observed. The photoluminescence of ZnO nanorods and nanotubes was also investigated.

Abstract:The ability to tune the size, shape, and properties of supraparticles is of great importance for fundamental study as well as their promising applications. We previously developed a method to synthesize mono-disperse ZnSe supraparticles via "in situ aggregation" of ZnSe nanoparticles through a simple hot-injection method. In the present work, we show that the "in situ aggregation" strategy can be extended to tune the shapes of ZnSe supraparticles, and introduce novel functional magnetic and luminescence properties. Shape control is manipulated with oleic acid as ligands, which balances the attractive interparticles van der Waals forces and steric repulsive forces from the ligands. With the increase of oleic acid concentration, a morphology change from microspheres to asymmetrical multimer and three-dimensional nanoflowers was observed. "Doping" preformed Fe3O4 nanoparticles into ZnSe supraparticles endow them with magnetic properties. The magnetism of these Fe3O4@ZnSe supraparticles depends on the dosage of dopant. Doping of preformed CdS nanocrystals was also studied, resulting in emissive hybrid CdS@ZnSe supraparticles with diameters of 50-100 nm. It is noted that the doping of Fe3O4 and CdS nanoparticles show differing morphologies. The differences can be explained by variance in the lattice mismatches which leads to differing potentials for crystal growth.

Abstract:Precious metallic nanoparticles have attracted considerable attention because of their unique properties (optical, electronic, and chemical properties) and potential applications in many areas such as optical probes, biochemical sensors, and surface enhanced Raman Spectrum. Despite many successes in synthesis of anisotropic nanoparticles (rods, plates), some limitations still exist in generating monodispersed silver nanoparticles. This study intends to elucidate the influence of crystalline seeds on the shape, size, and size distribution of nanoparticles through a seed-mediated method. The crystalline seeds can be modified by using different ways, such as heating treatment and oxidative etching. The shape and size of the generated particles will be characterized by TEM, and the particle formation and growth is tracked by UV-vis spectrometry. The findings would be useful for the shape-controlled synthesis of metal nanoparticles for desired functional properties.

Abstract:A facile approach to synthesize ZnS nano particles, nanorods and nanosheets stabilized by OP-10 in the mixed solvents of dimethylformamide and water was reported. Different morphology of the nanoparticles could be realized by changing the quantity of OP-10 and the refluxing time. The as-synthesized ZnS nanocrystals were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, photoluminescence and the UV-visible absorption spectra. The possible mechanism for the formation of morphology diversity was described.

Abstract:Systematically shape-controlled synthesis of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) has attracted increasing attention recently for both fundamental and technological interest. The study on the synthesis of colloidal CdSe NCs has given rise to well-developed methods for producing diverse shapes such as rods, wires, cubs and discs. In the current study, we demonstrate the shape evolution of CdSe NCs by using a seed-mediated approach by control reaction temperature and injection methods. The synthesis utilizes small (2.0-3.0 nm) zinc chalcogenide NCs with zincblende structure as seeds for subsequent growth, which results in distinct shapes of nail-shaped, tetrahedron-shaped, chess piece-shaped, and Y-shaped CdSe NCs with high yield and good uniformity. The morphologies and crystal structures of the prepared CdSe NCs were well characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution TEM, and X-ray diffraction measurements. This wide variation of shapes provides important information on the growth of CdSe NCs and promotes the shape-controlled synthesis of other NCs by seed-mediated synthetic method.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrated a "one-pot" strategy for synthesizing ZnSe nanocrystals (NCs) in liquid paraffin. All materials, including Zn source, Se source, and ligand, were mixed in liquid paraffin beforehand, which avoided the injection of Se source at high temperature. The resultant ZnSe NCs possessed high photoluminescence quantum yields and narrow size distribution. Moreover, the size, shape, and crystal phase of NCs were controllable by altering the experimental variables, such as precursor concentration, Zn: Se molar ratio, and heating rate. Because the raw materials used here were low-cost and environmentally friendly, this "one-pot" synthetic protocol would facilitate the commercial scale synthesis of high-quality ZnSe NCs.

Abstract:ZnSe sub-microstructures with different morphologies, sizes, and microstructures were synthesized by a modified vapor deposition method using CdSe nanocrystals (NCs) as the seeds. On the basis of the appearance of the as-synthesized products, we show that the substrate temperature and CdSe NCs are the critical factors for controlling the size and the structure of various ZnSe sub-micro structures. By manipulating the growth driving force (i.e., the degree of supersaturation), the morphology of the ZnSe crystals can be varied sequentially from nanobelts to meso-scale rods to wires/branched wires. Their morphologies and structures were characterized by X-ray spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The nanobelts grew along the [01-10] direction, whereas the meso-scale rods and wires grew along [0001]. Cathodoluminescence properties and growth mechanisms of these ZnSe structures are also discussed. The present results suggest that the simple method might be useful for the synthesis of other semiconductor nanostructures with manipulated morphologies to meet the growing demands of nanoscale science and technology.

Abstract:We report on the synthesis of shape-controlled ZnS nanocrystals (NCs) through a facile and green phosphine-free one-pot method. Rod-, dot-shaped, and quasi-cubic ZnS NCs were prepared using oleylamine as coordinating solvent, zinc stearate as Zn precursor and sulfur powder, thiourea, and dodecanethiol as S precursors, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies showed that S source played an important role in synthetic process. When thiourea and dodecanethiol took place of sulfur powder, no nanorods but dot-shaped and quasi-cubic ZnS NCs were formed. Moreover, the obtained different morphologies of ZnS NCs exhibit good optical properties and hold promise for future applications in nanodevices, biomarkers, and so on.
Synthesis and Mechanism of Particle- and Flower-Shaped Znse Nanocrystals: Green Chemical Approaches Toward Green Nanoproducts

Abstract:A nontoxic, simple, cheap, and reproducible strategy, which meets the standard of green chemistry, is introduced for the synthesis of ZnSe nanoparticles and nanoflowers. The production of these green nanomaterials can be readily scaled up and performed directly at ambient condition without affecting their qualities. The experimental results show that the as-synthesized ZnSe nanoparticles and nanoflowers with a zinc blende structure have a narrow size distribution without resorting to any postsynthetic size-selective procedure. A systematic study of the nanocrystal formation process indicates the following properties. (i) The amount of precursors plays a greater role in the determination of the nanoparticle size than other reaction parameters. Variation of this parameter allows us to tune the nanoparticle size in the high-temperature annealing process. This tunability is interpreted well by the growth kinetics. (ii) The limited ligand protection mechanism cannot be employed to explain the formation of our nanoflowers. Instead, a new growth mechanism is proposed. Upon heating at high temperature, a mononuclear Zn complex converts to a polynuclear Zn complex with multiple Zn atoms. Each Zn atom grows into one ZnSe nanoparticle after the injection of Se solution. These nanoparticles closely connect and thus look like nanoflowers.

Abstract:Controllable synthesis of semiconductor nanocrystals is an attractive issue yet still remains challenging. Here, we describe our efforts toward this direction by a simple colloidal method to engineer quinary Cu3ZnInSnSe6 (CZITSe) nanocrystals with different crystal phases and shapes. In this work, wurtzite and zincblende CZITSe nanocrystals with different morphology could be selectively synthesized by tuning the addition order of the Se precursor to metal reactants solution. Furthermore, the optical and electrical behavior of the resultant nanocrystals exhibits obvious structure-dependent properties. This work will open new exciting avenues to explore the controllable synthesis of multicomponent semiconductor nanocrystals with metastable structures.

Abstract:In the present study, ZnSe nanostructures with complex morphologies and different phase structures were synthesized via a solvothermal approach using a mixed solution of triethylenetetramine (TETA) and de-ionized water (DIW). It was found that the phase and morphology of the as-prepared products could be controlled by changing the volume ratio of TETA to DIW. Metastable ZnSe nanoflowers with layered structure could be obtained from pure TETA, which can be transformed to the wurtzite structure after heat-treating at 500°C in Ar atmosphere. With the addition of DIW, the morphology changed from flowers to spheres, and when the volume ratio of TETA to DIW was 1:1, loose spheres composed of nanoparticles were obtained. Variation of the TETA content in the mixed solvent also allows controlling of the crystallographic phase of ZnSe (wurtzite or zinc blende). Both the as-prepared products and the annealed powders were systematically characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared absorbance spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy methods.

Abstract:The synthesis of one-dimensional (1D) CdSe nanocrystals (NCs) with hexagonal wurtzite (WZ) structures such as nanorods has been well developed over the past years. However, the shape modulation of WZ-CdSe with two-dimensional (2D)/three-dimensional (3D) morphologies remains challenging because of its intrinsic hexagonal unit and the involved ligands selectively binding to specific crystal facets. Here, we present a facile and general one-pot approach for the shape control of WZ-CdSe NCs without using pre-existing seeds. Interestingly, the low supersaturation in a drip injection mode enabled the control and formation of various shapes including the nanorods, long nanowires, and hexagonal platelets, compared to the traditional one-time injection. Such shape evolutions could be conveniently tuned by the parameters such as the temperature, growth time, and injection rates. The underlying growth mechanisms for the morphological evolution and control were discussed in the context of kinetic/thermodynamic factors. Our studies provide a fundamental understanding of shape modulations in polytypic compound NCs, offering great opportunities to tune the shape-size-property relationship for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Indium selenide nanocrystals have been synthesized via a simple and facile way. Reaction temperature has important influence on the products. When the reaction temperature is low, InSe nanocrystals with zinc blende crystal structure are the product. When the reaction temperature is high enough, ZB-InSe transforms to hexagonal crystal structure In2Se3 (H-In2Se3). The molar ratio of precursors and reaction temperature have little influence on the shape and size of zinc blende crystal structure InSe (ZB-InSe) nanocrystals. Moreover, the optical properties of ZB-InSe nanocrystals have been investigated by UV–vis absorption spectrum.

Abstract:ZnO nanorod arrays with peculiar morphologies were synthesized on (111)-oriented Si substrate and glass via a vapor phase growth. The morphology of the individual nanorod can be flat-headed bottle-like, and needle-like, which depends on the deposition positions relative to the source materials in the presence of a controlling element Se. In addition, the arrays of all the three morphologies exhibit good alignment and high coverage. This fabrication technique can be also used to direct the controllable growth of other nanomaterials with similar morphologies.

Abstract:We demonstrated in this paper the shape-controlled synthesis of ZnIn2S4, CuInS2, and CuInSe2 nano- and microstructures through a facile solution-based route. One-dimensional ZnIn2S4 nanotubes and nanoribbons were synthesized by a solvothermal method with pyridine as the solvent, while ZnIn2S4 solid or hollow microspheres were hydrothermally prepared in the presence of a surfactant such as cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) or poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). The mechanisms related to the phase formation and morphology control of ZnIn2S4 are proposed and discussed. The UV-vis absorption spectra show that the as-prepared nano- and micromaterials have strong absorption in a wide range from UV to visible light and that their band gaps are somewhat relevant to the size and morphology. The photoluminescence measurements of the ZnIn2S4 microspheres at room temperature reveal intense excitation at approximately 575 nm and red emission at approximately 784 nm. Furthermore, CuInS2 and CuInSe2 with different morphologies such as spheres, platelets, rods, and fishbone-like shapes were also obtained by similar hydrothermal and solvothermal synthesis.

Abstract:A variety of nearly monodisperse semiconductor nanocrystals, such as US, ZnS, and ZnS:Mn, with controllable aspect ratios have been successfully prepared through a facile synthetic process. These as-prepared nanocrystals were obtained from the reactions between metal ions and thioacetamide by employing octadecylamine or oleylamine as the surfactants. The effects of reaction temperature and time, ratios of thioacetamide to inorganic precursors, and the reactant content on the size and crystal purity of the nanorods, have been systematically investigated. The optical properties and the formation mechanism of the nanorods have also been discussed. For the next biolabel applications, these hydrophobic nanocrystals have also been transferred into hydrophilic colloidal spheres by means of an emulsion-based bottom-up self-assembly approach.

Abstract:Monodisperse Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) nanocrystals with tunable shape, crystalline phase, and composition are synthesized by efficient thermolysis of a single source precursor of mixed metal-oleate complexes in hot organic solvents with dissolved sulfur sources. Suitable tuning of the synthetic conditions and the Cu/(Zn + Sn) ratio of the precursor has enabled precise control of the crystalline phase in the form of kesterite, or a newly observed wurtzite structure. Nanocrystals with morphology in the form of spherical, rice-like, or rod-like shapes are obtained over a wide range of compositions (0.5 <= Cu/(Zn + Sn) <= 1.2). Both the final products and intermediates for each shape exhibit consistent composition and structure, indicating homogenous nucleation and growth of single-phase nanocrystals. Thin films prepared from colloidal nanocrystal suspensions display interesting shape-dependent photoresponse behavior under white light illumination from a solar simulator.
