Abstract:Summary A hyperbranched polymer containing azo chromophores on the periphery has been synthesized from transesterification reaction between a hyperbranched polyester bearing peripheral hydroxyl groups and ethyl 4-{4'-[ N , N di(hydroxyethyl)aminobutoxy]phenylazo}benzoate. The hyperbranched polyester was obtained by adding the AB 2 monomers step by step to a multifunctional core molecule. Narrow molecular weight distribution, with a polydispersity index as low as 1.1, was achieved by this method. The azobenzene- functionalized hyperbranched polymer as well as the corresponding azo monomer showed typical photoresponsive behavior of an azobenzene type molecule. The trans azobenzene units of the hyperbranched polymer could be reversibly switched by UV irradiation to the cis form that recovered slowly to the trans form in the dark. However, significantly less conversion from the trans isomer to the cis isomer was observed for the azobenzenefunctionalized hyperbranched polymer at the photostationary states under the irradiation of UV light, which could be attributed to the increased steric hindrance in the hyperbranched polymer.

Abstract:A novel hyperbranched polymer containing pseudo-stilbene type azo chromophores throughout the hyperbranched architecture has been synthesized by ester-interchange reaction of ethyl-4-{4′-[bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino]phenylazo}benzoate. The polymer synthesized was characterized by using spectroscopic methods and thermal analysis. With interfering illumination of Ar+ laser beams (488nm) at modest intensities (150mW/cm2), significant surface-relief-gratings formed on the hyperbranched azo polymer films were observed. The first order of diffraction efficiency reached 27% after 60min irradiation.

Abstract:A facile synthetic route to functional hyperbranched polymers is developed. Arylene bipropiolates (HC C-CO2-Ar-O2C-C CH; 1-4) are readily prepared from a one-step esterification reaction between commercially available propiolic acid and arylene diols. Polycyclotrimerizations of 1-4 proceed regioselectively in reflux dimethylformamide (DMF), giving hyperbranched poly[1,3,5-tri(aroxy-carbonyl)phenylene]s (hb-P1-hb-P4) of high molecular weights (M-w up to similar to 8.3 x 10(5)) in high yields (up to 82%). The polymers possess perfect 1,3,5-regiostructures and high degrees of branching (DB similar to 88%). Little weights are lost when the polymers are heated to 390 degrees C under nitrogen or 380 degrees C in air. The polymers are highly transparent, allowing almost all light in the entire visible spectral region to transmit through. Thin solid film of hb-P1 shows high refractive indices (RI = 1.6255-1.681) in the wavelength region of 400-1700 nm, extremely high modified Abbe number (nu(D)' = 1030.7), and very low optical dispersion (D' = 0.00097). Its RI values can be modulated and its thin films can be cross-linked by UV irradiation, enabling ready generation of negative photoresist patterns.

Abstract:This article reports the synthesis and photoresponsive properties of a hyperbranched azo polymer containing electron donor-acceptor type azo chromophores both in backbone and peripheral positions. For the synthesis, a hyperbranched azo precursor polymer was synthesized by step-growth polymerization of an AB2 monomer, bis[2-(N-ethylanilino)ethyl] 5-aminoisophthalate, through azocoupling reaction. The hyperbranched precursor polymer was then reacted with the diazonium salt from 4-cyanoaniline to introduce donor-acceptor azo chromophores in the peripheral groups. The resulting azo polymers were characterized by the spectroscopic methods and thermal analysis. The photo-induced dichroism of the hyperbranched polymer was studied and its orientation order parameter was estimated to be 0.063. Thin films of the hyperbranched azo polymers were used to fabricate surface-relief-gratings (SRGs) by exposing them to an interference pattern of Ar+ laser beam at modest intensities (150 mW/cm2). The azo chromophores introduced by post-azo-coupling reaction at the para-positions of the peripheral azobenzenes shows a significant effect on the SRG inscription rate. The hyperbranched azo polymers can potentially be used for applications such as reversible optical data storage, photoswitch, sensors, and other photo-driven devices.
Polycyclotrimerization of aromatic diynes: Synthesis, thermal stability, and light-emitting properties of hyperbranched polyarylenes

Abstract:New aromatic diyne monomers of 1,4-diethynyl-2,5-(dihexyloxy)benzene (1), 1,6-diethynyl-2-(hexyloxy)naphthalene (2), and 9,9-bis(4-ethynylphenyl)fluorene (3) are synthesized. Their homopolymerizations and copolymerizations with 1-octyne (4) or phenylacetylene (5) are effected by TaBr5-Ph4Sn and CpCo(CO)(2)-hv, giving soluble hyperbranched polyarylenes with high molecular weights (M-w up to similar to 2.9 x 10(5)) in high yields (up to 99%). The structures and properties of the polymers are characterized and evaluated by IR, NMR, UV, PL, and TGA analysis. The polymers show excellent thermal stability (T-d > 400 degrees C and carbonize when pyrolyzed at 900 degrees C. Upon photoexcitation, the polymers emit deep blue light in the vicinity of similar to 400 nm with fluorescence quantum yields up to 92%. (c) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:A series of hyperbranched azo-polymers have been synthesized by two-stage azo-coupling reactions, in which a hyperbranched precursor azo-polymer (HPAP) was prepared by step-growth polymerization of an AB(2) monomer through azo-coupling reaction and then was further modified by postpolymerization azo-coupling reaction at the peripheral groups. The AB(2) monomer, di[2-(N-ethyl-anilino)ethyl]-5-aminoisophthalate, was synthesized from the nucleophilic substitution reaction between N-ethyl-N-(2-chloroethyl)aniline and 3,5-bis(carboxyl)aniline. On the basis of the monomer, HPAP was prepared by step-growth polycondensation of the diazonium salt of the AB(2) monomer. The hyperbranched precursor polymer was then reacted with diazonium salts of 4-nitroaniline, 4-aminobenzoic acid, and 4-aminobenzonitrile to introduce different types of donor-acceptor azo-chromophores at the peripheral positions. The structure and properties of the azo-polymers were characterized by the spectroscopic methods and thermal analysis. The hyperbranched azo-polymers were used to fabricate surface relief gratings (SRGs) by exposing spin-coated thin films of the polymers to an interference pattern of Ar+ laser beams at modest intensity (150 mW/cm(2)). The type of electron-withdrawing groups in the para-positions of the terminal azobenzene units shows a significant effect on the SRG inscription rate. The synthetic scheme demonstrated in this work is a feasible way to prepare a variety of hyperbranched azo-polymers under extremely mild conditions. The hyperbranched azo-polymers can potentially be used for applications such as reversible optical data storage, photoswitching, sensors, and other photodriven devices.

Abstract:Colorimetric mechanophores like spiropyran (SP) represent an emerging type of interesting signal molecule that can be incorporated into polymers or other materials as a stress transducer. In this work, a new type of spiropyran-containing inimer molecule MA-SP-Br are designed and synthesized, which is incorporated into polybutylacrylate (PBA) chains through reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) copolymerization with n-butyl acrylate (BA). PBA-SP-Br is then used as a macro-initiator to graft polystyrene (PS) side chains from the PBA backbone through atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene. The resulting comb-structured graft copolymer PBA-SP-PS contains 0.15-0.34% SP and exhibits a characteristic feature of thermoplastic elastomers. Under uniaxial stretch, the materials possess an excellent mechano-responsivity and change color at strains as low as about 14%.

Abstract:An A_2+B_3 method of preparing hyperbranched azo polymers by azo-coupling reactions was described.The hyperbranched precursor with diazonium salt groups on the periphery was prepared by step-growth polymerization of A_2(diazonium salts of 4,4′-diamino diphenyl sulphone)/B_3(benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid tri-2-(N-ethylanilino)ethyl ester)monomers through azo-coupling reaction.Benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid tri-2-(N-ethylanilino)ethyl ester was prepared by Schotten-Baumann reactions between 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl chloride and N-ethyl-N-hydroxyethyl-aniline.Then the hyperbranched precursor with diazonium salt groups on the periphery was further reacted with N,N-diethyl aniline by azo-coupling reaction to obtain the final hyperbranched azo polymer.The azo polymer was characterized by the spectroscopic methods and thermal analysis.The phase transition behavior of the hyperbranched azo polymer was studied by using the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).The hyperbranched polymer showed a second-order phase transition of typical amorphous substances.The T_g of the hyperbranched azo polymer was about 161℃.As containing the donor-acceptor type azo chromophores,the polymer showed typical spectral characteristics of the pseudo-stilbene type azo chromophores.The λ_ max value of the hyperbranched azo polymer,corresponding to the π-π transition,was about 465 nm.Spin-coated thin films of the hyperbranched azo polymer were used to carry out the SGR inscription experiments.Two p-polarized Ar~+ laser beams (488 nm) with an intensity 80 mW/cm~2 were used to produce the interference pattern on the polymer film.After irradiated for 1000 s at room temperature,the surface modulation depth was about 100 nm,and the grating spacing was about 730 nm.The modulation depth depended on the irradiation energy,and the spatial period depended on both the angle between the two interfering beams and the wavelength of the writing beams.Complex patterns could be inscribed when two gratings were recorded orthogonally to each other at the same location.

Abstract:In this work, surface-relief-grating formation behavior was studied by using two hyperbranched azo polymers. The hyperbranched polymers containing pseudo-stilbene type azo chromophores throughout the hyperbranched structure were synthesized by step-growth polycondensation of AB2 type monomers. The AB2 monomer, 4-(4′-(bis(2-chloroethyl)amino)-phenylazo)benzoic acid (BAA), was prepared through azo-coupling reaction between N,N′-bis(2-chloroethyl)aniline and 4-aminobenzenic acid. The another AB2 monomer, 4-(4′-(bis(2-chloroethyl)amino)phenylazo)-3-nitro-benzoic acid (BANA), was prepared through azo-coupling reaction between N,N-bis(2-chloroethyl)aniline and 3-nitro-4-aminobenzenic acid. The hyperbranched polymers (PBAA and PBANA) were prepared through nucleophilic substitution reaction of BAA and BANA, respectively. The polymers synthesized were characterized by using spectroscopic methods and thermal analysis. The photoinduced dichroism and photo-induced surface-relief-grating (SRG) formation of the hyperbranched polymers were investigated upon irradiation with Ar+ laser at 488 nm. PBAA shows typical photoinduced dichroism SRG formation behavior. On the contrary, PBANA does not show the photoresponsive properties. The results indicate that the nitro at the ortho position of azo group of PBANA shows the effect of inhibiting the photoinduced variations. The effect can be attributed to the blockage of the trans-cis isomerization of the azobenzene moieties by the steric hindrance.
Synthesis and photoresponsive properties of two liquid crystalline polymers bearing branched azobenzene-containing side chains

Abstract:We synthesized two photoresponsive liquid crystalline polymers bearing branched azobenzene-containing side-chains. The side-chain liquid crystal polymers (SCLCPs) were designed to contain two and three azobenzene moieties in each monomeric unit, which were attached to the backbones via a linkage of biphenylene and flexible spacers. The SCLCPs were synthesized by radical polymerization of corresponding methacrylate-based monomers. The polymers were characterized by FT-IR, H-1 NMR, UV-vis, GPC and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Both polymers formed the smectic-A mesophase in the LC states, whilst the polymer containing three azobenzene-containing branches in each repeat unit showed a high order mesophase in the lower temperature range. The polymers exhibited trans-cis photoisomerization and photoinduced orientation under light irradiation at suitable wavelengths.
The Synthesis and Characterization of the Azobenzene-Containing Amphiphilic Block Copolymers

Abstract:The azobenzene-containing chromophores were incorporated into the amphiphilic block copolymers to make the latter photoresponsive.The azobenzene-containing monomer MA6AB2 and macroinitiator PEO-Br were synthesized.Then the amphiphilic block copolymer PEO-b-PM6AB2 was synthesized through atom transfer radical polymerization(ATRP).The structure information of PEO-b-PM6AB2 was characterized by NMR and FTIR while the molecular weight and its distribution were characterized by GPC.The photoisomerization of the block copolymer was investigated by UV-Vis spectra,of which the results indicated PEO-b-PM6AB2 had a good photoresponsive property.

Abstract:A hyperbranched azo polyurethane was synthesized by an A(2) type monomer MDI and a B-3 type monomer 4-(N, N'-bis(2-hydroxyethyl))amino-2'-hydroxyethoxyl-4'-nitryl-azobenzene. The azo polymer was characterized by H-1-NMR, UV-Vis spectrum and thermal analysis. The lambda(max) of the polymer in DMF solution was determined to be 488 nm. The number average molecular weight determined by GPC is M-n = 9300 with a polydispersion index 1.9. The glass transition temperature (T-g) of the polymer is 131 degrees C determined from DSC thermogram. The results showed the azo polyurethane has been successfully synthesized through this scheme. Surface-relief-gratings (SRGs) were observed on the polymer film after irradiated by an interference pattern of Ar+ laser beam for 1000 s. The surface modulation depth and the grating spacing were measured by AMF to be 67 nm and 770 nm, respectively.

Abstract:We prepared an azobenzene-functionalized poly(diphenyl-substituted acetylene) (named as PDPA-azo) through the post-polymerization modification route by using the activated ester strategy. The structures of the derived PDPA-azo were fully characterized with comprehensive spectroscopic methods including NMR, FTIR, UV-vis, TGA, and so on. PDPA-azo showed photo-isomerization behavior due to the azobenzene moiety in the side chain. Since the short spacer between polymer main-chain and side-chain, PDPA-azo could not form liquid-crystal phase despite the presence of azobenzene mesogen in the polymer structure. It was noted that the modification of the precursor polymer PDPA-PFP with primary amine-functionalized azobenzene converted the fluorescence behavior from aggregation-induced emission enhancement to aggregation-caused quenching. The control experimental results suggested that the changes in fluorescent behaviors after irradiating under 365 and 254 nm UV lamps could be correlated to the photo-induced isomerization of the azobenzene group. As a result, the fluorescence properties of PDPA-azo can be adjusted by different external stimuli.

Abstract:A hyperbranched poly(aryleneethynylene) containing anthracene chromophore was synthesized by palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of 2,4,6-triiodophenyl 9-anthracenylcarboxylate with 9,9-bis[4-(2-propynyloxy)phenyl]-9H-fluorene. The structure and properties of the polymer are characterized and evaluated by NMR, IR, UV, PL and TGA analyses. The polymer is soluble in common organic solvents, possesses high thermal stability (T-d > 330 degrees C), and emits a strong blue light of 465 nm in both solution and solid states.

Abstract:A new type of high photosensitive azo functional polymers was synthesized and characterized by viscometry, infrared (IR) spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Xerographic properties were determined in bilayer devices. Results show that azo polymers have high photosensitivity resulting from the high electronic mobility (AP-1 and AP-3) and a high charge transfer (AP-4). The study of spectral responses indicates that these polymers exhibit good xerographic properties in visible region, and AP-1 also has high photosensitivity in the near-IR region. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Abstract:A series of benzothiadiazole-based (BT) hyperbranched polyfluorene copolymers with various branching degrees (5–40%) were designed and synthesized. TGA and film annealing tests showed the substantial thermal stability of these highly branched polymers. The optical performance of the polymers in solutions and as films, and their electrochemical properties were characterized. The energy transfer (ET) processes in these hyperbranched conjugated polymers, both in solutions and in the solid state, were also investigated. With the change of the solution concentration and the branching degree, the energy transfer efficiency of the polymers varied in solutions and the main photoluminescence (PL) peaks changed from blue to green region. As films, only green light emitted from BT units. In addition, the PL efficiency of the films decreased dramatically with the increase of branching degrees. All these features demonstrated that highly branched structure would effectively impede the intra- and interchain energy migration, especially in solutions, and remarkably influence the ET process in the solid state, which resulted in low PL efficiency.

Abstract:A partial conjugated hyperbranched light-emitting polymer was obtained by copolymerization, of a fluorescent A(2) monomer and a non-conjugated B, monomer. The polymer displays a good thermal stability compared with its linear counterparts, and a good solubility, controllable luminescent properties compared with full-conjugated light-emitting polymers.

Abstract:In this work, two series of epoxy-based polymers bearing bisazo chromophores were synthesized from two precursor polymers (BP-AN and BP35-AN) through post-polymerization azo-coupling reactions. The polymers were prepared to contain bisazo chromophores with different electron-withdrawing groups and different numbers of methyl substituents, which were characterized by (1)H NMR, FT-IR, GPC, UV-vis, and thermal analysis. The photoinduced birefringence and surface-relief-grating (SRG) formation of the polymers were studied by irradiating spin-coated films of the polymers with laser light at three different wavelengths (488, 532, and 589 nm). The results show that the polymers containing bisazo chromophores possess broader and red-shifted absorption bands compared with ordinary azobenzene-containing polymers. The electron-withdrawing groups on the bisazo chromophores show significant effect on the absorption band positions. The behavior of photoinduced birefringence and surface-relief-grating (SRG) formation is closely correlated with the chromophore structures and excitation wavelength of the laser light. Both electron-withdrawing groups and methyl substituents on the bisazo chromophores show obvious influences on the photoinduced birefringence growth rate and SRG formation rate. The proper methyl substitution on the bisazo chromophores shows ability to enhance the photoinduced birefringence growth rate, birefringence saturation level, and SRG formation rate. The bisazo polymers obtained in this study can be further explored for applications in telecommunication, data-storage, sensors, and other optical devices. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
