Investigation on Chinese clinicians’ perception of clinical trials

Abstract:Objective To investigate the current scenario of clinicians in China in terms of perception with the principle of clinical trial, and their limitations in research conduction.MethodsThe questionnaire surveys were carried out at various academic conferences with the participants from different cities, hospitals, and clinical departments between 2012 and 2014, to investigate the acquaintance of clinicians with the basic concept of randomized controlled trial (RCT), case-control study, and cohort study. All questionnaires were collected onsite.Results There were 1 122 valid questionnaires and 90% from first-class hospitals in China, representing the benchmarking and top academic level of current Chinese clinicians. The median age of participated clinicians was 39 years old; 50% of them involved into or ever responsible for RCT, and 52.8% considered RCT as prospective study, whereas others considered it as retrospective studies or not clearly aware of it. Moreover, around 50% clinicians had incorrect understanding on the design principle of ‘randomization, controlled, and blinding’. Only 16.8% clinicians ever heard of CONSORT statement. And 14.5% clinicians misconstrued the case-control study as prospective trials. Clinicians from different class of hospitals, or at different ages, or with different education degree, or at different cities would have varied acquainted level on principle of clinical trial. Conclusion The principles of clinical trial remained unclear to some Chinese clinicians, and there is ample room for improvement regarding the quality of clinical study conducted in China. It’s importance to establish continuing education system of clinical trial.
