Smyth, W. H. ; McElroy, M. B. Abstract Models for orbiting gases in the vicinity of Io are applied to two-dimensional images of the sodium cloud reported by Murcray and Goody in a companion paper to infer information about the source strength, velocity, and lifetime of neutral sodium near Io. The source of sodium at Io appears to be relatively constant in time, with an emission rate of about 2 times 10 to the 25th atoms/sec, corresponding to an average hemispheric flux of 0.1 billion atoms/sq cm sec. The source appears to originate from the inner hemisphere or some combination of the inner and trailing hemispheres of Io, and the mean emission velocity has magnitude 2.6 km/sec. Atoms are removed from the sodium cloud by electron impact ionization as suggested by Carlson, with an effective lifetime of between 15 and 20 hours.
